I was saddened to hear of the passing of Mike Rinder today. Mike was an activist and author who had an unmeasured level of dedication to his cause. In the few interactions I had with him, he was extremely kind and generous with his time. This week's episode is from when Mike joined me to talk about his memoir A Billion Years. I hope you enjoy it. We'll miss you Mike. --- Original Airdate: October 10, 2022 This week I'm thrilled to welcome Mike Rinder to the podcast. I've been a huge fan and supporter of his work since I first read Lawrence Wright's book Going Clear about the history and abuses of the Church of Scientology. Mike co-hosted the A&E documentary series Leah Remini: Scientology and the Aftermath. He reunited with Remini for the podcast Scientology: Fair Game. Mike was kind of enough to take time out of his busy schedule to talk about his new memoir A Billion Years: My Escape From a Life in the Highest Ranks of Scientology. I can't recommend this book enough. It's one I will definitely revisit over the years. Thanks for listening! EducatedEducated Full Book Introdction The protagonist of this book, Tara Westover, didn't attend school until the age of seventeen. When she was finally given the chance, she pursued learning with an unusual determination. She went to college at Brigham Young University and later got a Ph.D. from the University of Cambridge, forever changing her fate. In this book, Westover recounts how she broke free from her family's restrictions and changed her destiny one step at a time. This book became a New York Times bestseller soon after its publication. It was also Top 1 of Bill Gates' book recommendations of 2018. Author : Tara WestoverTara Westover is an American author and historian. She was enrolled at Brigham Young University as a former homeschooler and got a Bachelor of Arts degree in 2008. Then she was admitted into Cambridge University, where she earned a Master of Philosophy in 2009 and a Ph.D. in history in 2014. In 2019, the publication of this memoir made her one of Time's most influential people of the year. Overview | Chapter 1Hi, welcome to Bookey. Today we will unlock the book Educated: A Memoir. In the mountains of Idaho, there was a family: a couple with their seven children, all of which were born at home, several of which who didn't even have a birth certificate. The kids never went to school; neither did they see a doctor regardless of if they fell sick or were injured. The author and protagonist of this book, Tara Westover, was the smallest of the seven kids. Her father ran a junkyard, where Tara spent her entire childhood. There were no sounds of learning. Only the rumble of the crane. Tara didn't set foot in a school before the age of 17. Instead she spent her days in fear, dreading the violence her brother Shawn, might inflict on her at any moment. After growing up in such a toxic environment, Tara found an escape at Brigham Young university where she enrolled as a homeschooler. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree in 2008. Subsequently, she was admitted into Cambridge, where she earned a Master of Philosophy in 2009 and a Ph.D. from Harvard in history in 2014. Educated: A Memoir, will tell you how Tara broke free from the confinement of her family and changed her life. In this memoir, Tara Westover recounts in first person how she grew up and how she pursued learning. It shows us how education can provide infinite possibilities. Published in 2018, this is Westover's first book, but it has been hugely successful ever since its debut. The book soon became No. 1 on almost every major bestseller list in the U.S., and Westover herself was listed among Time's most influential people of 2018. Bill Gates highly recommended this book, saying, “she got me to reflect on my own life while reading about her extreme childhood…An amazing story, and truly inspiring. It's even better than you've heard.” Next, we'll introduce the major content of this book through three parts. Together let's see how Tara broke free from her family, reshaped herself through education, and eventually changed her fate. Part One: Tara's turbulent life before education; Part Two: Receiving education and fighting her old beliefs; Part Three: Reshaping herself with advanced education.

Rachael Waldinger and I have a conversation about how the needs of organizations and individuals working for them can be met. About how organizations can empower parents to take action and what leaders & managers can do to support working parents. Rachael shares with us her path from being a working mum to being a full-time mum and finding her way back to work. She describes how difficult the transition from home to work and vice versa can be. We speak about what it is that makes working parents “empowered”. And what empathy (versus sympathy) has to do with this all, i.e. listening and relating to what others have to say already makes a huge difference - not only among coworkers but also leaders. Another topic that came up is the differences between men and women when it comes to part-time work. The closing statement is that it is important to first connect on our similarities so that we can talk about what's different without having the need to defend the differences and taking sides - that gives us more choices to choose from. Rachael studied Human & Organizational Development in the US and led a variety of different teams in the Healthcare Technology industry. She has her Advanced Executive Coaching diploma from the Academy of Executive Coaching and works currently with leaders and companies around the globe. Today she is the COO/Head Coach at parents@work and also the mother of two wonderful boys. In her COO role, Rachael is dedicated to helping companies, mothers and fathers master the transition to working parent. ________________________________________ LINKS TO RACHAEL Website: https://www.parentsatwork.com; https://www.cambiumcoaching.com Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/Parents-at-work-516210778763919 Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/parents_at_work/ Linkedin: https://www.linkedin.com/company/parentsatwork/ ________________________________________ LINKS MENTIONED IN THE INTERVIEW Educated by Tara Westover: https://www.amazon.de/Educated-A-Memoir/dp/B078RVFGZY/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=educated&qid=1636104836&s=books&sprefix=educated%2Cstripbooks%2C110&sr=1-1 Ways to support this podcast: https://andrinatisi.com/episode-040/ ________________________________________ CONNECT WITH ME Website: www.andrinatisi.com Instagram: www.instagram.com/andrinatisi/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/andrinatisiLIFECURATION
Life gets busy. Has Educated by Tara Westover been gathering dust on your bookshelf? Instead, pick up the key ideas now. If you don't already have the book, order it https://geni.us/ultralearning-book (here) or get the https://geni.us/young-free-audiobook (audiobook for free) on Amazon to learn the juicy details. StoryShots Summary and Analysis of Educated: A Memoir by Tara Westover Tara Westover's Perspective https://geni.us/tara-westover (Tara Westover) is an American memoirist, essayist, and historian. Tara overcame immense childhood adversity to excel academically and become highly influential. In 2019, she was chosen by Time magazine as one of the 100 most influential people. Tara also has a solid academic record. She earned a Master's degree from the University of Cambridge as a Gates Cambridge Scholar. Plus, Tara was a visiting fellow at Harvard University in 2010. Subsequently, she returned to the University of Cambridge in 2014 to earn a doctorate in intellectual history. Part 1: An Unusual Childhood Childhood looks different for everyone. For some, it's a time of happiness and innocence as you play the day away. For others, it's more complicated. From a young age, Tara Westover knew her life was different. She was the youngest of seven children, and her parents intended to raise their family steeped in the Mormon religion. Additionally, the children were expected to help out on the family's rural farm. Living as Survivalists Tara enjoyed the carefree freedom of playing in nature and running through the hills of the nearby mountains. However, there was a reason the family lived on a rural farm. Tara's father, Gene, had overwhelming paranoia. Gene believed that the government's primary aim was to brainwash society and stray them away from God. This led Gene to raise the family as survivalists. Survivalists over-prepare with the expectation that the worst is inevitable. Therefore, Tara and her siblings had to carry supplies with them at all times. Additionally, their parents advised them to run for the hills if the government's police ever came for them. Tara's supplies would include herbal medicines, as traditional medicine was considered evil by her family. Plus, she carried water purifiers, guns, knives, and long-lasting meals. This upbringing was so strict that Tara's grandmother once encouraged Tara to run away with her to Arizona. Tara's grandmother did not hold the same beliefs as Tara's parents. Tara thought long and hard about this proposition but eventually rejected the offer. As well as instilling fear in Tara and his other children, Gene also had extreme views on gender roles. Gene's Mormon beliefs encouraged him to believe that women should remain in the home as caregivers. Gene did let Tara's mother, Faye, work as a midwife. However, this was only because the role was an extension of her caregiving role as a woman. As Faye disagreed with traditional medicine, she took a holistic approach to medicine. Essentially, she was an herbalist.

What causes estrangement between parents and children? And what are the effects of estrangement on our society? We're all sinful people, we all make mistakes, but we're still called to be the best parents, and the best children, that we can be. Estrangement from those we love is a source of great pain. How do we heal from that pain and move toward reconciliation? Reconciliation comes when we love unconditionally, forgive others fully, and seek forgiveness for our own shortcomings with humility. When two people are estranged, they must both be able to have empathy and see things from the other's perspective. As Christians, we know that only God's love is perfect and able to forgive fully. When we put the love of God to work in our relationships, we're able to love with God's love. We can heal, we can move forward, we can find reconciliation. Scripture mentioned in this episode Proverbs 22:6 (https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Proverbs+22%3A6&version=ESV) Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it. John 13:35 (https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=john+13%3A35&version=ESV) By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.” 1 Corinthians 13:4-8 (https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=1+corinthians+13%3A4-8&version=ESV) Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful; it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. Love never ends. We’re survivors of high control religious environments? What? Irenicast co-hosts offer the (sometimes) uncomfortable awareness that if you were in an evangelical/fundamentalist community, much of your life, inside and outside of church, was probably highly controlled. The conversation includes the harmful legacy of growing up and living within a highly controlled religious environment. For example, strong leadership equals controlling people; vulnerability is exploited and access to “worldly” information is heavily managed. Each co-host shares their own experiences of how being part of a high control religious environment impacted them developmentally and psychically. Using recent research as inspiration, co-hosts tell how they are healing from the realities of being both victims and participants in controlling religious communities. We are excited to release our interview with Tara Westover, author of the New York Times bestseller “Educated.” “[A] searing debut memoir… Westover recounts her upbringing with six siblings on an Idaho farm dominated by her father…who tried to live off the grid, kept four children (including the author) out of school…and stockpiled supplies and guns for the end-time…When she finally escaped the toxic atmosphere of dogma, suspicion, and patriarchy to attend college and then grad school at Cambridge, her identity crisis precipitated a heartbreaking rupture. Westover’s vivid prose makes this saga of the pressures of conformity and self-assertion that warp a family seem both terrifying and ordinary.”

Human beings are tribal creatures, particularly when they feel threatened. And the reality of living in America in 2018, at a time of massive demographic change and social upheaval, is that we all feel threatened, and so we are all becoming more tribal. In her new book, Political Tribes, Amy Chua argues that America’s foreign policy has long been undermined by our underestimation of tribalism abroad, and that our domestic stability is now being hollowed out by our inability to see it clearly at home. Donald Trump, she argues, is a product of tribal threat — of a country where “race has split America’s poor and class has split America’s whites.” And progressives, she argues, are a big part of the problem — they have become judgmental, exclusionary, and smug. The question that animates much of my conversation with Chua is: What can be done to calm American tribalism? Is it a product of overheated rhetoric and political choices? Or is it the inevitable result of a country teetering on demographic instability, a moment when no group can truly consolidate power so all groups are left fighting for it? Mentioned: The book about sports rivalry that Ezra mentions as an example of the power of divisive sports identities Amy Chua mentioned Better Angels, a group working to depolarize America She also mentioned Sarah Silverman's new show, I Love You, America, which aims to bridge our political divide with comedy Anne Jones' "whitelash" idea is articulated here Ezra mentioned that the Soviet Union exploited American racial tensions. Here’s an explanation of that history. Books: The Possessed by Elif Batuman Educated: A Memoir by Tara Westover Ethnic Groups in Conflict by Donald L. Horowitz Amy Chua also did a By the Book with the New York Times recently, so here's a full breakdown of her reading recommendations. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
