Welcome back to the VHMA Manager to Manager Podcast! Today, we're diving into an interesting aspect of veterinary practice management: open-books management. Join us as we explore how sharing the financial side of the practice with all team members, even the "non-numbers" people, can lead to greater engagement, accountability, and success. Our guest for today's episode is Kristen Norris, a seasoned CVPM Practice Manager based in Texas. With 14 years of experience in her current practice, including a decade as a practice manager, Kristen is passionate about creating a work environment where team members feel empowered and valued. She firmly believes that fostering transparency and open communication about the practice's financial health is key to achieving this goal. In this conversation, Kristen shares her insights into how KPIs can help everyone understand their role in contributing to the practice's success. From posting scoreboards in prominent areas of the practice to integrating financial discussions into daily operations, she offers practical strategies for effectively sharing financial information in a way that resonates with team members. We'll also explore the importance of tailoring the information shared to each individual's role and how this approach can lead to increased buy-in and engagement across the team. Show Notes: [2:19] - Open-books management does not mean opening the checkbook for everyone. It means being transparent about the health of the business and letting staff feel involved. [3:24] - Kristen describes the scoreboard she has posted in the main area of the practice that provides a snapshot of the health of the business. [5:51] - It's important to take the opportunities to show and talk about how much things cost. [7:54] - Sharing financials can make a big difference, but we have to be able to explain them in ways that the staff can individually understand. [10:46] - Some patient care goals can be connected to numbers. [11:49] - Share different measurements and how they apply to what we provide to clients. Earning money for the practice is not something to be ashamed of. [14:58] - When it comes to new hires, sharing some data and numbers can improve their onboarding and understanding of their new role in the practice. [17:05] - Leadership can communicate successes in a similar way to team sports. [18:55] - It is important for associates to know how they are doing in the practice and sharing numbers can communicate that clearly. [22:29] - In years past, scripts were commonly used. Now we go with a more relaxed approach, but sometimes we miss some information. Talking points can help. [24:14] - Celebrating goals does not have to be huge expense. Simple celebrations when goals are met are effective and appreciated. [26:19] - If you want your team to be involved, you need to provide ways for them to be involved. Thank you for listening. Okay, so the new memoir "Splinters" wasn't our favorite book ever, and sometimes it downright irritated us, but our investigation into what worked (and what didn't!) makes for a fascinating conversation about the nature of memoir and new trends in the genre, from "woe is me" themes to shameless self-exposure which apparently appeals to voyeuristic readers. John Julius Reel and Jennifer discuss the author, Leslie Jamison, the buzz surrounding this book, and their critiques and suggestions for what would have made this book better. Opinionated, passionate, and willing to be harsh, John and Jennifer defend their positions but acknowledge that their own perspective and age might color their view of this very contemporary memoir. Meet Reilly Kate. She's 6. She's a reader. She's a writer. She's a thinker. In this episode, Reilly selects a few pages from Hey Ant! to discuss the importance of understanding characters in the books we read. She looks closely at a few pages, and then connects the ideas to Ivy and Bean, and (of course) Harry Potter. When we have a process for thinking about characters in books, we also have a process for thinking about others in the world around us...but perhaps more importantly - about ourselves. "Books help you realize who you are inside. Books help me understand who I am." - Reilly

A presentation for Purple Rose Holistic Health -www.PurpleRoseHolisticHealth.comMy story is a simple one. I was sick and tired of being sick and tired and one day I woke up and decided that I didn’t want to feel bad anymore, not about myself or about my life. Then, I began the process…the work necessary to change my mind, my body and my spirit…MY LIFE! And trust me; I had a lot of work to do! I was coming out of a 21-year marriage that became so emotionally and financially draining that my life was at stake because my health was in serious trouble. To add stress on top of stress, I didn’t feel good about myself and my greatest sickness was emotional eating!…and then the sun came out! Many things changed for me in positive ways! It all began with a conversation that I had with a friend who is a naturopathic doctor, which ABSOLUTELY CHANGED, my life. Everything else sort of snowballed from that. Then in May 2011, I made the decision “suddenly and immediately” to remove meat, dairy, ALL processed foods and sugar from my lifestyle, and adopted a 95% plant based diet. As a result, I lost about 45lbs over a period of time and have maintained the weight loss. I am celebrating 3+ yrs of feeling ABSOLUTELY great and there is no turning back! I feel like I received a 2nd chance, a new lease on life. When you feel good, that energy permeates every part of your BEing. This is what worked for me.My coaching style fully endorses “bio-individuality”, which simply means, there is no one way of achieving weight loss and nutritional balance. What worked for me, may not work for you! Each person is uniquely different and should be assessed based on the dynamics of their own unique lifestyle. How can I help you? I'm glad that you asked....Here are a few ways… Help you discover what foods work best for YOUR body type Empower you with weight loss techniques to help you achieve YOUR ideal weight Hold you accountable for making GOALS and achieving them Together we can evaluate healthy alternatives to managing pre-existing conditions Support you in exposing the triggers to your emotional eating Discover why proper REST essential to your overall health and why it’s necessary to disconnect from time to time Assist you with "decoding your plate" - it's not all about the food! Achieve overall balance: mind, body & spiritI am passionate about YOUR success! YOU DESERVE TO LIVE YOUR BEST LIFE!"I facilitate thinking...I engage minds...I wreck limiting mindsets and self-sabatoging thought processes...I listen and respond to questions...I support you in the struggle against food addiction...I create an environment free of judgment...I reignite hope...I hold you accountable to YOUR goals and I teach you how to develop a healthy relationship with food."~ My Soul WorkI received my training from the Institute for Integrative Nutrition, the #1 nutrition school in the world, where I was trained in more than one hundred dietary theories and studied a variety of practical lifestyle coaching methods. Drawing on this knowledge, I will help you create a completely personalized “roadmap to health” that suits your unique body, lifestyle, preferences, and goals.Learn more about my training and my unique approach to health coaching.- See more at: http://www.purpleroseholistichealth.com/about-valerie-moore#sthash.ed97Vvbr.dpuf

A Book Buzz for Lane Cobb -http://lanecobb.comMy name is Lane Cobb, and I am a Holistic Intuitive Life and Wellness Coach, supporting women to reconnect with their passion, discover their purpose, and see more of who they really are, so they can be who they really want to be. With 25 years of coaching experience, I have supported hundreds of women on their path to self-empowerment, to the discovery of their unique gifts and talents, and to the expression of their true voice in the world. Over the years, it has been my pleasure to coach women of all walks of life, including CEO’s and Business Executives, Physicians, Pastors, and Educators to name a few – all Mothers, Wives, Sisters, and Friends – all seeking to access a greater level of personal power, and a deeper appreciation for what it means to be a powerful woman. As women, we are powerful beyond our knowing, but we live in a cycle of disempowerment. As caretakers and nurturers, we often put our own needs behind those of others, and are often expected to compromise on our own values, beliefs, and desires.Through personal experience, I have experienced the damaging effects of self-compromise, the pain of being stopped by self-doubt and complacency, and the regret of having made less than powerful choices. In youth, I was bullied relentlessly, afraid to walk to and from school or even down the hall. In college I was raped by someone I considered a friend, never telling anyone for fear they would think it was my fault. It’s taken me a long time to drop the baggage of disappointments, failed relationships and dreams that I never even pursued. For years I felt powerless to change my life, even though I was a source of strength for everyone else. Now, I know that the only thing standing in the way of me having the life I wanted was fear, anger, regret, and complacency, and now that I have that life, I am teaching other women how to get out of their own way and claim the life that was there for them all along, but hidden from their view.I’ve made countless wrong turns and more than my share of bad decisions in my life, and I now know that my purpose and my passion lives in the sharing of my experiences with other women who have suffered in the same way to find their true voice, to regain their self-respect, and to claim the life they deserve to have.If this cycle sounds familiar, then my coaching programs are for you. I broke through my cycle of disempowerment, and I know you can, too!Through years of intrapersonal development, study, and research in the fields of psychology and spiritual growth methodologies, I have created a signature system designed to support and move women forward in a powerful way, that leaves them fully standing in their own power, fully accessing their unique gifts and talents, and living their lives according to what is most important to them, rather than according to their circumstances. When you work with me you will: Drop the excess baggage and free your inner champion Break through the barriers of negative thought patterns and find your true authentic voice Create new patterns of success through meaningful, right action Establish and achieve new levels of personal excellence in business and in personal relationships Love Yourself Unconditionally, Respect Yourself Fully, and Never Settle for Less than What You Really Want Ever Again. My breakthrough healing modality “Intuitive Body Coaching” is designed to help you transform emotional, physical, and spiritual energy to help you rediscover your passion, connect with your purpose, and live life unencumbered by baggage from the past. You will be most authentic self without regret or apology and live the life you were always meant to have! Are You Ready To Be Empowered?
