On this episode I'm joined by Maria Elena Ortiz. Maria comes to the Modern from the Pérez Art Museum in Miami (PAMM), where she curated discerning exhibitions such as Allied with Power: African and African Diaspora Art from the Jorge M. Pérez Collection and The Other Side of Now: Foresight in Caribbean Art. At PAMM and with support of the Mellon Foundation, Ortiz founded and spearheaded the Caribbean Cultural Institute (CCI)—a curatorial platform dedicated to Caribbean art. During her tenure in Miami, Ortiz worked to diversify the museum's collection, securing works by Simone Leigh, Bisa Butler, Bony Ramirez, and others.María joined the Modern in 2022. Her first exhibition with the museum, Surrealism and Us: Caribbean and African Diasporic Artists since 1940 is on view now until July 28, 2024. The show inspired by the history of Surrealism in the Caribbean with connections to notions of the Afrosurreal in the United States. Representing a global perspective, this exhibition is the first intergenerational show dedicated to Caribbean and African diasporic art presented at the Modern. Listen in as we talk about her latest show, what inspires her work, and what she's most passionate about.
Episode No. 645 features curator María Elena Ortiz and artist Kenny Rivero. Ortiz is the curator of "Surrealism and Us: Caribbean and African Diasporic Artists since 1940" at the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth. The exhibition investigates the history of surrealism in the Caribbean and posits that Caribbean intellectuals were key to the development of surrealism in other sites, such as Europe. The exhibition also examines the relationship between Caribbean surrealism and the Afrosurreal in the United States. The exhibition is at MAMFW through July 28. An excellent exhibition catalogue was published by DelMonico Books. Amazon and Bookshop offer it for about $50. Rivero is among the artists whose work is included in "Surrealism and Us." Rivero's work deconstructs histories and explores the construction of identity through paintings, collage, drawings, and sculpture. His work is in the collections of museums such as the Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art, Bentonville, Ark., the Baltimore Museum of Art, the Studio Museum in Harlem, El Museo del Barrio, New York, and the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York. Museums are important spaces where the stories of people, culture, history, and our planet, are both preserved and shared. When you're traveling, they can give you important context about the region you're visiting. We're digging into museums with María Elena Ortiz, Curator at the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth. We chat about the history of museums, and we unpack the colonial undertones that they sometimes have. And of course, we'll talk about the role of museums in tourism. Episode No. 625B features artists Tammy Nguyen and Jammie Holmes. The Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston is presenting "Tammy Nguyen," an exhibition of Nguyen's new paintings, works on paper, and unique artist books. The interconnected body of work, informed by East Asian landscape painting, addresses the relationship between man and nature and landscape as presented by Ralph Waldo Emerson in his 1836 book Nature. The exhibition, which is on view through January 28, 2024, was organized by Jeffrey De Blois. Nguyen was a recipient of a 2023 Guggenheim fellowship, and has exhibited at museums such as MoMA PS1, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Factory Contemporary Arts Center in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, and more. Her work is in the collection of museums such as the Institute of Contemporary Art Miami and the Dallas Museum of Art. This is her first museum solo exhibition. The Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth is presenting "Jammie Holmes: Make the Revolution Irresistible," a survey of approximately 15 paintings Holmes has made since 2019. The exhibition reveals Holmes' interest in Black domestic spaces, particularly as they relate to his hometown of Thibodaux, Louisiana, and the continuing impacts of the Black Panther Party. The exhibition, which was curated by María Elena Ortiz, is on view through November 26. The MAMFW-published catalogue is available from the museum for $65. Elena Ortiz on Nature Education for Adults Making connections to nature through working in a college garden. Elena has been teaching with the Phoenix College Biosciences Department in the Maricopa Community College System for eleven years. She has taught environmental biology and general biology for non-majors. Her newest class is Plants and Society, a basic botany course for non-majors. As part of teaching this class, she brings her personal interest for gardening into the classroom. She says the garden is a great place to introduce, or reintroduce, students to nature and ecology. Elena has a PhD in Plant Biology from ASU, a Master of Science in Biology from the University of Puerto Rico, and a Bachelor of Arts in Biology from the University of California at Santa Cruz. Her interests in ecology and gardening were both heavily influenced by her maternal grandfather who was a family doctor and gentleman farmer in Puerto Rico who retired on his farm. As a young girl, she would follow him around as he would spend the day working on projects, in his garden and orchid collection, or his farm. She credits him for most of the knowledge of the natural history of Puerto Rico that she still remembers today. IN THIS PODCAST: Greg chats with an old college friend who is now teaching botany at Phoenix College. Elena shares what she is doing now and how she has brought her classrooms outdoors and into the garden. She describes how she believes it is important to make a connection with nature right outside your door, and how some of her students are surprised how easy it is to grow things in the desert. She also depicts how her students make the connections and take ownership of the garden enough that they want to stay working even after the class ends.
