POPULARITY
February 2025 marked the fifth anniversary of the announcement that LDS Business College would become Ensign College. The name change to the 139-year-old educational institution came with expanded educational offerings and symbolic and historical significance. The name change helped reaffirm the full name of the institution’s ownership, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and the scriptural use of the word “ensign,” meaning a new covenant, a symbol of peace and a standard to the nations. Of the change, Ensign College President Bruce C. Kusch said, “As we embrace a new name, I invite each of us to think more carefully about that light and being a standard of righteousness.” On this episode of the Church News podcast, President Kusch and his wife, Sister Alynda Kusch, talk about their journey of faith, the academic changes the school is making and the power of aligning one’s life to the Lord’s mission and timing. The Church News Podcast is a weekly podcast that invites listeners to make a journey of connection with members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints across the globe. Hosts Jon Ryan Jensen, editor of the Church News, and Church News reporter Mary Richards share unique views of the stories, events, and people who form this international faith. With each episode, listeners are asked to embark on a journey to learn from one another and ponder, “What do I know now?” because of the experience. Produced by KellieAnn Halvorsen.

Illuminate Podcast: Shining Light on the Darkness of Pornography
One of the biggest casualties men experience, often when they are boys, is getting separated from their own hearts and living life on autopilot. Addictions, trauma, abandonment, and other challenges can create more separation and make it difficult for men to feel alive and energized. It can also make it difficult to connect to themselves, to God, and their most important relationships. We invited Kurt Francom, a board member of the non-profit men's organization, "Warrior Heart", to join us for a discussion on how men can find their hearts and re-energize their lives. This is a great discussion to listen to whether or not you're a man. We all have men in our lives who, as Kurt says, "Need permission to not need permission to reclaim their own hearts." That ALL Might Be Edified: Discussions on Servant Leadership
I had the wonderful privilege to have Rock Ete as the guest for this episode. Rock is the Business Development Manager for Entergy Louisiana, the largest electric utility in Louisiana. Rock starts off the episode by giving us some great background on growing up in Samoa and describes some of the pros and cons of the council system they use on his native island. He talks about how he learned humility, listening carefully, and how to discern what is meant. Rock teaches a powerful lesson by talking about his dad's oratory skill in contrast to some of his life's struggles. We discuss some of the ways to be more inclusive with more diverse faith groups and also take on some of the pitfalls of servant leadership. Rock emphasizes the importance of every voice being heard, making sure that people know their purpose, and working hard to build a consensus. Rock closes out the episode going back to his Samoan roots and sharing a great Samoan proverb with us that helps us reconsider going too long in meetings and prepares us to step up when it is time to make a decision because as he reminds us: every leader must be prepared to make a decision. At the age of 13 (8th grade), Rock sat and passed a government high school entrance exam program designed to help Samoan school children to continue their education at a high school of their choice in New Zealand. His high school of choice was based on living arrangements with distant cousins/relatives willing to become Rock's guardian during his high school years in New Zealand. He graduated from Avondale College (High School) in 1989. Rock played rugby during and after high school with my aspiration to play professional rugby for the New Zealand All Blacks. At 22 years old, Rock chose to serve a two-year LDS Mission in the Hawaiian Islands, Nov. 1993 – Nov. 1995 and put aside his dream to play for the All Blacks. After his mission, Rock moved to Salt Lake City Utah, started school at Ensign College (formerly LDS Business College) January 1996. Here, Rock met his future wife Jennifer Ferrell. Rock graduated with an Associates June of 1998 and continued undergraduate and graduate programs at the University of Phoenix, and completing a MBA, December 2009. Rock's professional background has been in B2B Sales and eventually to high level and complex business development roles. Rock has been married to Jennifer for almost 27 years and they have four children: Hana (24), Connor (22), Nick (21), Ian (20). They live in Denham Springs, Louisiana. and are active members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. My friend Loren G. Dalton (former LDS Mission President) joins us to talk about his new book called “You ARE Receiving Revelation - Now Act on It”. In the podcast, Loren shares both the theology of this doctrine and practical application (including powerful stories) to make this real in our lives. Brother Dalton spoke on this subject at an Ensign College devotional (see link below). I encourage everyone to check out Brother Dalton's book. When you do, you will find that I am one of the book endorsements at the front of his book. So many people struggle with either believing they aren't getting revelation or in learning how to better recognize it when it comes. I believe this book will help each of us better see, understand, and apply personal revelation in our lives, in addition to helping us learn how to recognize and avoid promptings from the adversary. If you have been struggling to find a great Mother's Day gift, this book could be your answer! Thank you, Loren, for your great work in our community. Honored to have you on the podcast! This is Derek Miller Speaking on Business. With a historically low unemployment rate, Utah has seen some unprecedented challenges when it comes to recruiting and retaining a workforce. To address this issue, Ensign College has taken several steps. President Bruce Kusch joins us to share more about their efforts. BRUCE KUSCH: Harvard Business School researchers recently published a report calling for community colleges and employers to work more closely to solve the challenge of creating a steady pipeline of prospective employees that are necessary to maintain a vibrant and growing economy. Employers require talent that is better prepared; colleges want employers to be more engaged. While Utah has been a leader in job creation, the supply of qualified workers still falls short of demand and employer expectations. Though there is no quick fix, Ensign College believes steps can be taken to address the dilemma. We think it all starts with a skills-based curriculum, counseling with employer advisory boards to assure that what is taught is what employers really need. And engaged employers offering internships and other real-world experience helps produce a prepared workforce ready to contribute from day one. Find out how we prepare capable and trusted employees at www.ensign.edu. DEREK MILLER: By cultivating our talent pipeline in educational institutions, we can better bolster and build out our workforce. It is our responsibility as Utahns to support the education sector's commitment to the next generation of workers, thinkers and leaders. I'm Derek Miller with the Salt Lake Chamber, Speaking on Business. Originally aired: February 14, 2023

This is Derek Miller Speaking on Business. Ensign College was established in 1886 in Salt Lake City by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. It is led today by President Bruce Kusch who shares “the rest of the story.” BRUCE KUSCH: It's been an exciting time since our name was changed two years ago from LDS Business College to Ensign College. Today we offer bachelor's degrees in Business Management, Communications, Information Technology, and more. Each year we welcome nearly 3,000 students to our campus and, through our partnership with the online BYU-Pathway program, we serve over 5,000 students globally. We're confident that number will continue to grow because our skills-based curriculum prepares students with the training employers demand. Speaking of employers, we recently created the Ensign Center for Employer Connections—a hub for students and companies to work on projects and internships. The center is also a business incubator for student entrepreneurs where they can develop their ideas under the guidance of successful professionals. At Ensign College we speak of days never to be forgotten and we look forward to many more. Check out our website ensign.edu for more. DEREK MILLER: LDS Church President Russell M. Nelson is an alumni of Ensign College, a place where he learned to write in shorthand, a skill that he still uses daily today as the leader of that global faith. How the CliftonStrengths Assessment can help you identify your God-given talents and learn how to apply them to your vocation (and all areas of your life) to more fully reach your potential.MEET ARNIE ALLREDWhile working in career services for then LDS Business College (now named Ensign College), Arnie Allred and his colleges were looking for a tool they could use to help students excel in job interviews. They selected the CliftonStrengths Assessment because they saw that the test results gave students a vocabulary they could use in everyday conversations (e.g. "I have a talent for building relationships"), validation for their strengths, and guidance on how to aim those strengths towards the goals they want to achieve. If that sounds too aspirational, listen to this interview as Arnie shares stories about the power of combining your individual strengths with others as well as coupling your own strengths together through something called "theme dynamics." The results are remarkable, but admittedly, hard to believe until you go through the process yourself. When I first took the Strengths assessment, I first tossed the results aside thinking they were just too obvious. But that's the point. As Arnie says, "Everybody is incredibly talented. The sad thing is that lots of people don't see just how much value they can bring to the table. People don't recognize it because they say, 'That's just me.' They don't see the things they naturally do well as a talent."So let that sink in and listen to this interview to learn more about how important it is to KNOW what you're good at so you can "name it, claim it, and aim it" towards the things you want to achieve in this life.TAKE THE CLIFTONSTRENGTHS ASSESSMENTIf you want to take the CliftonStrengths Assessment so you too can get the vocabulary and validation you need to achieve your career goals, sign up for strengths coaching here at Faithful Career Moves. This is The EdUp Experience President Series Episode #48. In this episode of The EdUp Experience, we welcome Dr. Bruce C. Kusch, President of Ensign College! Bruce talks to us about the necessity of making the higher education experience mirror, as closely as possible, the world of work. He asked the question - "why isn't orientation like the first day of work"? From there, we discuss why it's essential to execute operationally in a competitive environment where the student needs to be an ACTOR, not an OBJECT. President Bruce C. Kusch became the 13th president of Ensign College on April 17, 2017, where he had been serving as its chief academic officer since March 2016. He began his Church Educational System employment as a member of the business management faculty at Brigham Young University–Idaho in August 2002. In July 2008, he was named associate academic vice president for curriculum at BYU–Idaho, serving in that capacity until June 2012 when he was called to serve as president of the Mexico Cuernavaca Mission. Before joining the BYU-Idaho faculty, President Kusch worked as a sales and marketing executive and management consultant for various high-technology firms in the San Francisco Bay Area. This is Derek Miller Speaking on Business. Like all higher education institutions, the LDS Business College had to quickly adapt to providing remote learning for its students. Through innovation, the College continues to maintain a first-class learning experience, and President Bruce Kusch is here to tell us more. BRUCE KUSCH With only a few days' notice, we went from being a vibrant downtown campus to teaching and learning remotely. Students and employees responded well, and we've learned essential lessons about rising to meet the unexpected, improving collaboration, and making rapid change under difficult circumstances. We're grateful to announce a careful return to campus for the fall semester and will take every precaution to assure health and safety, using remote technology for instruction as needed. It's important to us to maximize the immersive, hands-on instructional opportunities that are a core tenant of our institution during this challenging time, and the College continues to explore innovative ways to do so. These adaptations have all come as we are also preparing to implement significant institutional changes. On September 1st LDS Business College will become Ensign College, and in the fall of 2021 we will begin offering several bachelor's degrees. DEREK MILLER The LDS Business College offers a diverse, but affordable, educational experience for its students and continues to lead the way with teaching strategies that provide real-world experience and prepares students and Utah for the future. I'm Derek Miller with the Salt Lake Chamber, and this is Speaking on Business. Originally Aired: June 23, 2020.
