Division II veteran Rick O'Dette, who has amassed over 500 wins and led his teams to NCAA Regional play four times during his career, was named Saint Leo's new head baseball coach on June 15, 2017, ushering in a new era for Saint Leo baseball. O'Dette made an immediate impact on the Saint Leo baseball program taking a team that had achieved just 23 wins in 2017 and amassing 38 victories in his first season at the helm. The Lions finished the year with an impressive 38-11 mark including taking two of three from Florida Southern on the road who was ranked No. 1 in the NCAA at the time. Under O'Dette's guidance, junior utility player Peyton Isaacson led the NCAA in saves with 14 in just 21 appearances on the mound. The junior tied the Saint Leo program record for saves in a season while also filling the role of starting catcher and first baseman throughout the season.

On this week's show, I'm joined by the great Tom Patri, 9-time winner between the PGA & Champions Tours Tom Purtzer, the Pittsburgh Field Club's Head Golf Professional Chris Sheehan, and the Curator of History at Oakmont and Allegheny Country Club, David Moore. TP and I go back to his 1981 D2 National Championship while he was at Florida Southern. We hear about the penalty levied on him and his team in 1980 that cost them the National Championship and how they used that to fuel them to win it the next year. Tom shares some advice for kids and their parents looking to play college golf and he talks about the great player that Andy Bean was. We lost Andy a couple of days ago. Tom Purtzer won 9 times between the PGA & Champions Tours. One of the many amazing things about his accomplishments is that he won tournaments over the course of 3 different decades, winning in 1977, '84, '88, and '91. We get into one of his professional wins not on the PGA Tour, a 10-stroke victory at the 1979 Japan vs. USA Golf Matches. He also takes us inside his conversation with Ben Hogan at the Champions Dinner prior to the Colonial National Invitational. Chris Sheehan is the Head Professional at the Pittsburgh Field Club. Chris has worked at some of the most prestigious courses in our country like Oak Hill, Inverness, and Lebanon Country Club. Along his golf journey, he got to work with Bill and Craig Harmon. Chris and I get into the rich history of PFC. The club is 142 years old and beginning preparation for their 150th anniversary in 2032. We hear about Alexander Findlay's original course design plus the Hall of Fame Designers who have tinkered with the course over the years like A.W. Tillinghast, Donald Ross, Robert Trent Jones, and Tripp Davis. We also hear the tale of the 18th hole which was transformed from a 275-yard Par 4 into a Par 3 after a few members died climbing up the steep elevation change from the tee to the green. David Moore is the Curator of Collections at Oakmont and Allegheny Country Clubs. David tells some fantastic Arnold Palmer stories that give great insight into who Mr. Palmer was. We go way back and hear the history behind the first 25 years at Oakmont. He also shares his insights on the origin of the Stimpmeter, the Golf Heritage Society's National Convention, the work he did at Montclair Golf Club in New Jersey, and an inexpensive DIY project to display your autographed golf balls.

We'll delve into his insights on Dylan as a talented 19-year-old and his subsequent rise as one of the best college baseball players in recent years. Episode 19 already? Well it's here and we have a great one for you. Nick and Ryan sit down with 2020 MLL Championship Coach Sean Quirk of the Boston Cannons. Coach Quirk was an absolute pleasure to have and we're sure he’ll end up on the show again in the future. The first part of the show addresses college athletics and since Coach Quirk is an assistant AD and former coach at Endicott College, he's able to provide some valuable insight into what the future of college sports may have, and how things are changing quickly. Going Offsides with Sean Quirk Our conversation then transitions into pro lacrosse. We talk about the Cannons organization, how the team was built for the bubble season, and what ultimately helped them win the 2020 MLL Championship. Lastly, we talk about Coach about his newest project, Peak Pro Sport, a company he helped start to address what he thinks are important needs in the lacrosse market. I believe Carson is one of the most under-rated and under-recognized players to come out the Houston area. Carson started playing lacrosse in third grade with the Cy-Fair Iron Lions. He was one of the first players to play with the Houston Outlaws. Carson was also one of the early players to participate in the initial Stickstar combines in Houston. He played in the off-season with HOULA and Hurricanes when he was younger. He played with Stickstar and 3rd Coast once he got into 8th grade and high school. He graduated from Houston Christian High School in 2016 and he is currently in his senior year at Florida Southern where he has played all four years. This is a great discussion that includes the impact of off-season teams, overcoming injuries and the hard work required to excel at the college level.

Finish this Challenge and I'll be Super Impressed. I learned this drill when I was back in college playing at Florida Southern. Lee Janzen, former US Open Champion and FSC alum came back to practice with the team a few times. Lee's always been an incredible putter, and this was a drill he worked on every day. There are few reasons why I love this drill: 1. You don't hit the same putts over and over again 2. You're simulating real golf circumstances 3. You're simulating pressure 4. You're working on your entire pre-shot routine 5. It's a great benchmark for how good your short putting is Truthfully, you probably won't appreciate this drill until you try it a few times and realize how frustrating it can be. If you miss any one of the 24 putts, you have to start all the way back at the beginning. I think you've got to be a pretty good short range putter to accomplish this. Sharpen Up Indoors Over the Winter: So, if you're up north in the snow, this is a great use of your time indoors. While you're watching football, grab a coin and see if you can get through this drill before the 4th quarter ends. You'll be super sharp when the snow melts. Message me if you're able to accomplish this drill...I want to keep a short list of top putters in the crowd in case I'm short a player in my next scramble. Cheers. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/golf-essentials/message
