Welcome to episode 4 of Tribe Talkin', by Tribe Global Ventures, the B2B VC. We discuss the next episode in the series 'Founder', which showcases Fred Schebesta, the founder of comparison website, Finder, which sees 10million visits globally each month. We discuss the painful journey some founders often go through on their path of self-discovery, and the consequences of this journey for themselves and those around them. Within this we look at rule breaking as a common entrepreneurial pattern, as well as a tendency to sometimes blow shit up, physically, and metaphorically. We discuss an article on Equity Crowd funding that puts forward an argument that people may be being taken advantage off, especially with very high valuations. We unpack why this may not be true. We talk about telco's wanting to start charging content providers like Netflix for internet usage in addition to the end subscriber who are already paying. A trick that seems to be like asking car companies to pay for the roads the cars they make are driving on. Finally, we discuss a recent by Ronan Farrow article that discusses the significant power wielded by entrepreneurs, as they scale their businesses much faster than regulation can keep up. Specifically, this article looks at Elon Must hand his interactions in the Russia/ Ukrainian conflict, and how this single person holds entire countries in the palm of his hand. hello@tribeglobal.vc
Today I chat to Fred Schebesta, who started Finder, one of Australia's largest comparison sites. Finder was started after 39 previous business attempts and failures. It was first built in the living room of Fred and his business partner Frank in their share house in 2006, and it's worth over half a billion dollars! I've known Fred for a long time and he is literally one of the smartest people I know and it was seriously such a fun chat, we did go on some tangents, but I felt I learnt a lot! As with all episodes, we talk about the startup journey and business challenges, but we also tapped into Fred's new business chapter into crypto. Now I know what most of you are thinking, I normally hear crypto and I'm a bit scared and/or bored, but honestly, Fred's been the first person to explain it in a way that I actually get and I found it super interesting.@thelazyceo_podcast Hosted on Acast. My guest for Season 4, Episode 3 is an exceptional woman. Krystal Barter has lived most of her adult life in the spotlight. Her moving personal story, from her BRCA1 gene diagnosis and preventative double mastectomy as a young mum to purpose-driven entrepreneur and startup founder, has made headlines around the world. In 2009 at the age of 25, she launched the not-for-profit Pink Hope from her hospital bed as she recuperated from her life-altering surgery, even attracting the attention of Angelina Jolie, who reached out to Krystal following her own BRCA gene detection. By 2019, despite being widely recognised and awarded across multiple platforms for her important advocacy work, today, Krystal had her sights set on something greater. Realising her mission to create change in the global healthcare landscape, she made “the hardest decision of [her] life” to step away from Pink Hope and launch Humanise Health, a dynamic change agency placing patients at the center of health communications and awareness campaigns globally. In this inspiring episode, we go deep, tapping into Krystal's enviable reserves of positivity, discovering the power of listening, and asking ourselves ‘What does it really take to lead with purpose?' For Krystal, the power of influence ultimately comes from finding that purpose, but also by giving back to those around you. “I really strongly believe,” she says, “that lived experiences and stories can change the world.” www.wehumanisehealth.com www.krystalbarter.com/ Follow Krystal: www.linkedin.com/in/krystal-b-39045628/ You can listen to the Fred Schebesta interview on all podcast apps or here Follow the Influence Unlocked podcast on Instagram: @influenceunlockedpodcast Follow Samatha Dybac on LinkedIn: www.linkedin.com/in/samanthadybac Producer: http://www.piccolopodcasts.com.au/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In this week's pod, we welcomed Fred Schebesta to talk about whether blockchain can improve project delivery! Fred Schebesta is the epitome of entrepreneurialism. An obsession for hyper success, Fred is passionate about disruptive innovation and inspires the startup community through his achievements and learnings. The Australian-born entrepreneur is the co-founder of Finder, a global personal finance comparison website, which attracts over 10 million visitors each month, over 400 staff across six offices, and can be found in over 80 countries. For the past 2 years, Fred has been leading the Finder App, which is an Australian-first innovation that combines personal finance management with automated comparison. It connects a user's bank accounts, analyses insights and sends automated alerts on when they can compare products and potentially save money. Launched in March 2020 with plans to roll out in the USA and UK early next year. The main topics we discussed on the podcast were as follows: · In its simplest form, a blockchain is an internet-based database that anyone can access · Most projects shouldn't use blockchain. It's expensive, slow, cumbersome and emerging! · Blockchains are useful where you need to prove project data to the public · A database is a cheaper, more effective solution for projects · Bitcoin could change the way we incentivise people working on projects · Blockchain could be used to create smart contracts (self-executing contracts). This may not work on qualitative outcomes that occur on major construction projects. It works better where there are binary outcomes. · Be remarkable! Make sure people are willing and want to comment to their friends about ti · In most businesses, the rational idea is not to innovate and keep doing what they're good at. At some stage businesses will experience disruption Blockchain is most relevant on airplane and train manufacturing projects, high value but process-driven projects · Plenty of major engineering projects have been delivered without technology but with solid project management principles. Have Project Management skills ever really changed since the Pyramids were built? · Technology isn't necessarily an enabler for good project management · Innovation gets killed by antibodies within organisations! · When creating new technology, you need to ignore the KPI's. Deliver or don't! · We're likely to see digital industrial revolutions in the next year ` · Write down what a project will do, also write down what the project won't do Here are some links to the topics we discussed: · Finder - https://www.finder.com.au/ · Mythical Man-Month - https://www.amazon.co.uk/Mythical-Man-Month-Software-Engineering-Anniversary/dp/0201835959 · Phoenix Project - https://itrevolution.com/the-phoenix-project/ Book recommendation: Common Stocks and Uncommon Profits https://www.amazon.co.uk/Uncommon-Profits-Writings-Investment-Classics/dp/0471445509 Tune in next week when we're re-joined by Paul Goodge and Warren Beardall to discuss the philosophy of project management. In this week's pod, we welcomed Richard Logue to talk about "Busting Earned Value Management Myths"! Richard has worked in Project Controls and Planning for over 30 years, largely in the Transport industry. Richard was part of the team that implemented Primavera at Network Rail. Richard previously worked as a Business Consultant at the planning software company Artemis and is currently working on an assignment at Transport for London. The main topics we discussed on the podcast were as follows: No project is too small (or too big) to reap the benefits of EVM EVM does not need complicated software or a large team to implement effectively EVM can coexist with various contractual frameworks like NEC, etc. Earned Value (progress) needs to be tied to something tangible (or have agreed "rule of credit") The Work Breakdown Structure is really important when it comes to setting up a Performance Measurement Baseline Tune in next week when we're joined by Fred Schebesta to talk about if blockchain can improve project delivery! Join me as I talk with Fred about his journey from answering the phone in a Pizza Hut call centre to building websites with one of his mates at University because he thought it was “cool” to setting a challenge to see how quickly they could get “credit card” to the top of a google ranking (for the fun of it) and creating a business that “helps people make better decisions” based on his passion for creation, curiosity, persistence and the game of grinding it out and being the last-one standing. Fred's newest venture, Schebesta Ventures is about giving back, sharing his experiences, systems and strategies to help people be courageous, break the mould and have a purpose. Listen: Rob and cofounder of Finder, Fred, breakdown how they achieved innovation in their entrepreneurship endeavors. You've probably heard me rattle off the quote, "everyone you meet knows something you don't" and I reflected on that a lot during this episode. Creating this podcast expands my mind and world so much, but each guest teaches me something in a completely different way. Often I pull out specific nuggets or ideas that click in my brain as we're chatting a long, but with Fred Schebesta it was the way his brain works overall churning through concepts that I found most fascinating particularly because it's so different to my own and I could honestly never guess where his mind was going next. You'll be able to tell by how much we jump all over the place what a keenly curious mind he has, which is no doubt responsible for his incredible achievements, and while it definitely kept me on my toes we ended up peeling back more layers than I expected to wade through the depths of self worth, internal judgment and the complicated relationship we have with success. If you don't think you've heard of Fred, just conjure the Finder.com.au jingle (which everyone has heard) and he's the man responsible. With over 10 million visitors a month, Finder offers us easy access to resources that help us understand financial products in the Australian market and Fred has won just about every entrepreneurial award there is and justifiably too. I would never have guessed that he came from a medical family and lived out part of his childhood in a caravan at the back of the medical centre his parents built, nor would I have guessed that Finder had to make a come back a few years into its journey from a complete ban by Google (which makes me SHUDDER to think of the challenge that would pose). Like always, there's so much more to his way to yay than you'd expect and there are chapters we didn't even get to like his success in the wild world of cryptocurrency. It's a rollercoaster this one, so buckle in BUT there are so many great takeaways and a whole person, father and chicken-lover behind the title you see most... + Follow Fred and Finder.com.au here + Announcements on Insta at @spoonful_of_sarah + Join our Facebook community here + Subscribe to not miss out on the next instalment of YAY! >>> GET THE SEIZE THE YAY BOOK HERE

In this episode of The Breakout Growth Podcast, Sean Ellis interviews the Global Co-CEO of Finder, Fred Schebesta. Finder is on a mission to help people make better buying decisions with comparison tools, guides, and news, and their breakout growth story is one of constant reinvention. Fred wants Finder to be more than a unicorn, and to sustain growth long into the future (12:50). To do this, he believes the company needs to take big risks. Today, that means shifting the organization from a media company to a product and technology company. The company’s mobile app represents the beginning of this shift. Finder has already helped consumers make 74 million decisions, but their goal is to help the world make a billion decisions. That’s difficult when consumers are wired to use Google for every search, but as the Finder app intercepts and predicts purchasing intent, the company hopes to disrupt both itself and the market (11:15). In this discussion, Sean digs into the mindset and approach to growth that is allowing Finder to thrive and expand on the global stage. The company serves more than 10 countries with over 300 employees, and Finder recognizes that product/market fit is not a constant across the globe. Fred explains his personal passion for listening to and identifying customer needs and the importance of this approach as the company reimagines itself into these markets, and we also learn why this approach has helped the company adapt to the challenges of a world swept by Covid-19. While nothing can fully prepare an organization for a global crisis, Finder has been able to use its reinvention-based DNA to continue growing through this period. We discussed: Finder’s reinventions from a blog-based comparison site to a media company and now to product and technology company (2:05) Fred’s reasons for taking big risks despite the company’s and his own success, and why he thinks this critical for sustained growth (11:54) The challenges of expanding into other markets and how Finder has approached and finds product/market fit in each country (14:33) Leading growth with a distributed, growing team through the Covid-19 pandemic (29:00) Turning the desire to help the world make a billion decisions into a Northstar Metric (36:50) How Finder’s growth engine, begins with performance channels and moves to brand and awareness channels, taking into account the nuances of each market (40:00)
