Todd's Community Relations teams oversee local stakeholder engagement, community relations, corporate volunteerism, and sustainability at the company's major manufacturing and office locations around the globe. These locations include Arizona, California, New Mexico, Ohio, and Oregon in the United States, as well as China, Costa Rica, Germany, India, Israel, Ireland, Malaysia, and Vietnam. During his 25+ year career at Intel, Todd has represented the company in numerous public forums and led industry-wide initiatives in national and international committees. He has authored several papers in scientific journals and conference proceedings on a variety of sustainability topics. He was recognized with a lifetime achievement award by the National Association for Environmental Management (NAEM) and has been named by Scientific American as one of ten outstanding leaders involved in research, business or policy pursuits that have advanced science and technology and one of the world's top 20 sustainability leaders by Sustainability Magazine. Todd holds a Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering from Brigham Young University and a Master of Science in Environmental Engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He lives in Gilbert Arizona with his family, and in his spare time can be found running or biking the streets and trails of the Grand Canyon state. Todd Brady Joins Sustainable Nation to Discuss: Advice for approaching leadership about pre-competitive collaboration The challenges and opportunities of AI on sustainability Intel's progress toward 100% renewable electricity by 2030 Advice and recommendations for sustainability professionals Todd's Final Five Questions Responses: What is one piece of advice you would give other sustainability professionals that might help them in their careers? Read as much as you can. Become knowledgeable, not only with your niche area, but broaden your horizons as much as you can. Learn as much as you can. Not only about sustainability, but across the business. Sometimes I've seen sustainability professionals be so passionate about whatever it is that they're working on, but they've lost sight of what the business imperatives are. So you always want to keep those two hand in hand, your sustainability focus along with the business imperative. When you can pull those two together, you're going to be the most successful. What are you most excited about right now in the world of sustainability? I'm super excited that sustainability is mainstream. I'm blown away, being in this field for almost 30 years. When I started, it was only us nerd sustainability people we're talking about. Now it's mainstream. Everyone's talking about it. Your kids are interested in it, your wife is interested in it, your book club is interested in it, as well the customers, the general public. I think we have to take full advantage of that and really drive our work with that in mind. What is one book you would recommend sustainability professionals read? I just reread Bill Gates' book on Climate (How to Avoid a Climate Disaster). If you haven't read that, I highly recommend it. It's apolitical. He's not taking a political stance. Instead he approaches it kind of like an engineer, maybe that's why I like it. I'm an engineer and it's just: here's the problem, here's the vastness of the problem. It's super challenging, we've got to get through these different areas, but here are some solutions that we can go do. I always like those very practical approaches. What are some of your favorite resources or tools that really help you in your work? Several come to mind. One would be, read anything that you can get your hands on. Nowadays the various search engines are so good. As soon as you click on a few articles around sustainability, all of a sudden you're getting other recommendations. That's a simple way. Other industry associations: I do think it's important to pop your head out of your day-to-day within your own business to understand what others are doing. So join an association within your sphere, whatever that is. We have many within the semiconductor industry, SIA and others that are important to be a part of. I'm also a member of a group called Sustainability 50 with other leaders like myself. It's great to be able to benchmark and bounce ideas off. I'll put a plug in for GreenBiz. I think Green Bizz is a great forum as well that pulls a bunch of sustainability professionals together. They were the first kind to really do that on scale and they do a great job year over year with their conferences and newsletters as well. Where can our listeners go to learn more about you and the work being done at Intel? They can reach out to me on LinkedIn. I'm happy to connect and you can follow me there. Then at Intel, go to intel.com/csr and you'll get to our corporate responsibility report. There's a number of pages you can follow there. I'll put a plugin for water. We're doing some really innovative things in water. Go to intel.com/water and see some of the restoration projects we're working on. By the way, we would love to partner with other companies in that area as well.

Merriam-Webster's Word of the Day for April 24, 2024 is: burgeon BER-jun verb To burgeon is to grow or develop quickly—in other words to flourish, blossom or sprout. // The trout population in the stream has burgeoned since the town implemented its laws against overfishing. See the entry > Examples: "From the quaint charm of its historic downtown to the dynamic energy of its burgeoning Arts District, Gilbert [Arizona] offers something for everyone." — Lux Butler, The Arizona Republic, 7 Mar. 2024 Did you know? Burgeon arrived in Middle English as burjonen, a borrowing from the Anglo-French verb burjuner, meaning "to bud or sprout." Burgeon is often used figuratively, as when writer Ta-Nehisi Coates used it in his 2008 memoir The Beautiful Struggle: "… I was in the burgeoning class of kids whose families made too much for financial aid but not enough to make tuition payments anything less than a war." Usage commentators have objected to the use of burgeon to mean "to flourish" or "to grow rapidly," insisting that any figurative use should stay true to the word's earliest literal meaning and distinguish budding or sprouting from subsequent growing. But the sense of burgeon that indicates growing or expanding and prospering (as in "the burgeoning music scene" or "the burgeoning international market") has been in established use for decades and is, in fact, the most common use of burgeon today.
My friend Arthur Wiseman (who returned from his successful mission in Gilbert Arizona in Dec of 2023, plans to become a therapist, and returned to live in Arizona) shares his mission experience. Arthur (who knew he was gay since age 6 and planned to tell no one) shares what it was like starting his mission and feeling spiritual promptings (many times during his mission) to open up about being gay because of a desire to help others find hope and Christ in their lives. Arthur talks about a variety of wonderful, spiritual, and sometimes painful experiences only possible because he was open. Arthur talks about developing a strong relationship with Heavenly Father and making Christ the center of his life. He talks about the personal revelation he is receiving. Arthur also talks about how being vulnerable allowed him to be a safe place for his companions to open up about their lives—providing beautiful insights on how to better minister to each other. Arthur talks about his supportive companions and what they proactively did to show their support. This is a powerful podcast from a brave and faithful gay Latter-day Saint. Arthur (and all those allies who support him) give me hope for the future as we work to build Zion. Thank you for being on the podcast Authur. Honored that more can hear your story. What if your teen got into a group fight that caused someone's death resulting in a murder charge? In Arizona, says criminal defense attorney Mark Mendoza, a conviction on murder charges is a minimum sentence of life in prison. One of the teens charged with murder by a Grand Jury in Maricopa County was included because he recorded the incident on his phone. That should strike fear into any parent whose kiddo hangs out with the wrong crowd or gets involved in the type of fight clubs that spawned the so-called Gilbert Goons. Charges also have been filed against parents of one of those charged, similar to the now-jailed parents of a teen who was found guilty in a school shooting.Today's episode is from the March 7 2023 live stream with host Billie Tarascio and Mark Mendoza, a former Maricopa County prosecutor, who answer parents' questions and talk about the arrests and murder charges against 7 teenagers in Gilbert Arizona who are being charged with the tragic murder of 16 year old Preston Lord who died after a beating at a Halloween Party in 2023. The Gilbert Goons story, and the murder charges are a cautionary tale that parents need to hear, and they need to share with their teens.

Gilbert Arizona is a highly sought-after suburb of Phoenix where parents can find nice homes in safe surroundings. But that visage of safety was shattered when a teenager, Preston Lord, at a 2023 Halloween party was murdered by a mob of Gilbert and neighboring Queen Creek teens who call themselves the Gilbert Goons. As social media pages started lighting up with videos of the event, along with other disturbing pictures of random Fight Club-style beatings, drugs and weapons appeared, parents began demanding police take action. One of many issues in the community is the time that has passed since many of the crimes by the Goons have taken place. Has law enforcement and schools done enough to weed out the criminals? In today's episode of the Modern Divorce Podcast, host Billie Tarascio steps into the world of a criminal defense attorney, Ryan McPhie of the Grand Canyon Law Group, who shares a deep dive into what teens and parents who are protecting them could be facing when it comes to the charges that are still to come. Will they be facing jail time, fine or more?As of this recording, the first assault charges were announced as of January 10, 2024 against a few of the Goons, but the community is still clamoring for more, and still asking when will someone be arrested for the murder of Preston Lord?

My friends Lila and Gina Ellsworth join us to share their story. Lila (Film major at the University of Utah, plays on the women's hockey team, from Gilbert AZ) shares her journey trying to understand her sexual orientation—a journey that started in middle school. Lila talks about praying on how to navigate this road, turning to podcasts to hear other stories, coming out to a friend and then her mother Gina. She also shares her original journal entries to help us understand her road to love and accept herself. Lila talks about all the pain and shame for her feelings—feelings she has no control over and how others helped her feel normal. Lila talks about coming out to her mother and how her mother's loves and supports Lila—and her heart of love seeing “all the pain Lila is feeling.” Gina shares the suicidal feelings that Lila was experiencing and her heartache and love for her. Lila then talks about a coming out to her dad Matt and his support and then extended family (with her seminary teacher helping her on the letter). I am so grateful for Lila's courage to be open about her orientation and to share her story on the podcast—her story will give others hope in their journey. I'm grateful for Gina for also being on the podcast and her insights for LDS parents on how to love, understand, and support their queer children. This is a beautiful family love story—love the Ellsworth family—sharing your story helps so many.
