This week, 200+ employees at Google announced that they've formed a union. The Alphabet Workers Union, which is supported by Communications Workers of America (CWA), is the first of its kind at Google, and will include dues-paying members, an elected board of directors, and paid organizing staff. For now, it still represents a small fraction of the roughly 260,000 workers at Alphabet. But it's still a big deal — especially in Silicon Valley, where it's so hard to organize at all. Guest: Sam Harnett, Silicon Valley Reporter for KQED Read the transcript here. Listen to our How We Got Here series here.

The two employees at the center of the squall, Rebecca Rivers and Laurence Berland, had been placed on administrative leave a few weeks ago. Neither have been given a formal explanation from Google.

About 1,000 Google employees walked out of work Thursday and staged a rally on the company's main Mountain View campus. The impetus was a New York Times report published last week about dozens of sexual misconduct allegations and some very large exit packages for accused executives. Long gone are the times of monthly Google PageRank updates, Google dances, and checking Google data centers - and to be honest, I somewhat miss those days. But the question I see asked a lot is how much have things changed? The answer is a lot has changed but fundamentally nothing has changed. Several people have recently reported seeing double featured snippets in Google search results. A double featured snippet is a featured snippet with a second featured snippet beneath it. This arrangement effectively shows information from two websites and advertising in the space normally showing ten websites. Growing up in India, there was one good library in my town that I had access to—run by the British Council. It was modest by western standards, and I had to take two buses just to get there. But I was lucky, because for every child like me, there were many more who didn't have access to the same information that I did. Access to information changed my life, bringing me to the U.S. to study computer science and opening up huge possibilities for me that would not have been available without the education I had.

Oh boy... An executive order from the White House created chaos across globe, so we talk about how it impacted tech. On the lighter side, we chat about Apple's strong earnings, and how the headphone-jackless iPhone 7 somehow played a role in Apple selling a record 78 million iPhones in three months. But man... it was a heavy week. There's no way around it. We like to make jokes and goof off on this show, but the news this week can only be approached with a somber tone. In the episode we cover IPL 3 live broadcast on Youtube, updates ont he Google-China story, Apple get cozy with Microsoft (again) and it seems like using patents to sue each over out of business is becoming fashionable.
