In this episode, we speak with Anna Youngston, founder of Majury Merchandising and former merchandising professional at Accessorize, about her transition from a long-standing career in retail to establishing her own consultancy. With over 20 years of experience in merchandising across major British fashion retailers, Anna provides valuable insights for professionals in fashion, retail, and business strategy. Her career spans well-known retailers such as Harvey Nichols, Principles, Accessorize, Warehouse, and Topshop. She now works with small businesses, helping them strengthen their commercial performance through data-driven merchandising strategies. This episode offers practical guidance for retail buyers, founders, and operators navigating a highly competitive and fast-changing market. One of the key misconceptions Anna addresses is the belief that merchandising is only relevant for large businesses. In reality, it is often the missing component in smaller brands seeking sustainable growth. She explains how better stock visibility, range planning, and forecasting can significantly improve performance. Her consultancy work highlights how many small brands fail to unlock the full value of their data. Whether addressing pre-orders, managing cash flow, or responding to evolving customer behaviour, effective merchandising is not optional - it is essential. Anna also discusses the importance of reactive agility. Successful merchandising is not only about long-term planning, but also about adapting quickly to challenges. From excess stock to supply chain delays, the ability to make timely, informed decisions can significantly impact cash flow and profitability. She emphasises the importance of understanding financial performance at a granular level. Whether discussing pre-order models, seasonal range architecture, or margin contribution, she underlines the value of knowing precisely where growth is coming from. Anna believes there is a need for objective, data-led decision-making. Emotional attachment to products or legacy ideas often results in poor commercial outcomes. The ability to pivot with intention and strategic clarity is a critical skill for modern retail businesses.Takeaways from the Episode:Merchandising isn't just for big brands - it's a game-changer for small businesses. Don't be afraid to pivot, and don't just rely on hope - it's not a good sales strategy! Know your numbers: You have to make sure you understand your forecasting, lessons learned, and your building blocksWhether you're a brand founder, a solo entrepreneur, or a retail team member trying to get a grip on your stock and strategy, Anna's wisdom offers practical tools to build resilience, make smart decisions, and grow with confidence.Connect with Anna Youngston or follow Majury Merchandising on Linkedin, or check out https://www.majurymerchandising.com/Thanks for tuning in! Water bosses have apologised after thousands of customers were left without water, or very low pressure, as temperatures topped 34C.South East Water say the problem in Herne Bay was caused by particularly high demand across the county which caused storage levels of treated drinking water to 'fall significantly'.Also in today's podcast, residents in Snodland say anti-social teenagers are becoming a growing problem - with youngsters blocking pavements and damaging property. It's a particular issue on the High Street, where some people have been threatened and intimidated. We've been hearing from a refugee charity about what they think can be done to bring down the number of asylum seekers crossing the Channel to Kent. It's after figures from the Home Office revealed just under 20,000 made the journey in the first six months of this year, a 48% increase on the same period in 2024.One of the men who used to be in charge of finances at Kent County Council says he doesn't know what Reform's DOGE team expects to find. The department of government efficiency are out to cut "wasteful" spending after the party won the local election in May.Joely Richardson has visited a community allotment project in Margate to see how it's helping children's mental wellbeing and development. The actress is an ambassador for Save the Children which funds the project. We've been hearing from Craig David ahead of his sold out summer concert in Rochester. He'll be performing in the castle grounds on July 6th.And in sport, Kent's Zak Crawley's due to open the batting for England in the second Test against India. He hit 65 in the second innings of the first game.
Irish interior living space is being radically redefined by the 'Millennial' generation, who are opting for oversized bean bag sofas and chairs over conventional furniture - whilst moving their living room configurations a number of times each year. Just under a quarter of Irish youngsters aged between 29 and 44 (23%) now own a bean bag item as an alternative to an armchair or recliner, according to research from Big Bertha Original. The survey, conducted amongst 1,000 Irish residents, revealed that there's a spike in bean bag popularity amongst the age range, higher than any other bracket. Bean bag ownership across the Ireland sits at 20% today, compared to just 11% in 2004. In addition, 46% of Millennials will rearrange their living room furniture at least twice a year and 33% of them will change their furniture depending on the season of the year. The Big Bertha Original results point towards a renaissance in bean bag furniture, which is proving to be one of the most unlikely living room accessories of the year so far. Big Bertha Original's Buyer Hannah Blakey said: "Our survey results suggest that interior living spaces are being redefined and reimagined by a younger generation in Ireland. "They have broad horizons when it comes to style and comfort in their homes, and it is encouraging to see that our bean bag sofas, chairs and cushions are an increasingly prominent part of their vision." Big Bertha Original products are not only easily portable and affordable, but they're deceptively comfortable too, moulding to the body to deliver optimum physical support. This helps to ease muscle and joint strain and ensures maximum comfort. Also, modern bean bag furniture maintains its shape due to premium manufacturing processes and robust coverings, available in a wide range of styles and fabrics. Hannah added: "Our bean bag products offer so many benefits, most obviously in their price point, as one of our highback chairs cost as little as £59.50, compared to up to twice that amount for a conventional alternative from a High Street furniture shop." "They come in various shapes, sizes and colours, making them extremely versatile pieces of furniture that can complement any room. What's more, they can be lifted and moved easily, making the home a far more interactive living space than ever. "Overall, the combination of comfort, versatility, affordability, and accessibility makes bean bags an attractive choice, particularly for renters looking to enhance their living spaces with function and fashion at a fraction of the cost." The UK, EU, Spain and Gibraltar believe the Treaty Agreement reached earlier this month will bring confidence and legal certainty to the lives and well-being of the people of the whole region. Though, when asked about the possible impact on retail and wholesale sectors, Sir Joe Bossano warned that changes to the Gibraltar economy are likely to see winners and losers. How are Main Street traders feeling about all this? We spoke to Raju Alwani of Carlos Electronics, Kapil Radhakishen of Sports City, and Chris Walker of Marks & Spencer, Next and Early Learning Centre.A Pride conference at the Sunborn tackled issues like Pride at work and understanding gender diversity. Organised by the Ministry of Equality, it covered the history of Pride in Gibraltar, creating safe spaces for LGBTQ+ young people, and more. It comes ahead of the more celebratory Pride event tomorrow. Our reporter Michael Beltran was at the conference and will be part of the celebrations tomorrow. It's Armed Forces Day this weekend! SSAFA Gibraltar, the local arm of the UK's Armed Forces charity, is marking it by sharing stories of how it supports serving personnel and their families stationed on the Rock. This year also marks SSAFA's 140th anniversary - a huge milestone! Joining us in the studio were charity chairman Alan Jones, Command Warrant Officer Sean Mead, and Warrant Officer Kayron Fortunato. Beauty was the topic of discussion on last night's episode of ViewPoint. Taking a deep, unfiltered look at body image, diet culture and evolving beauty standards. In this episode, Jason responds to two powerful listener messages. First, a PM asks: How do you lead when you're new to a project and the entire team knows more than you do? Jason shares the exact strategy he would use to build trust, gain clarity, and define his role starting with humility and collaboration. Second, a reflection from a $300M industrial project in the Amazon reveals something important: even with advanced systems like BIM, AWP, and Last Planner in place, production suffers when foremen and supervisors lack core skills. Through Kaizen cycles, the team discovered gaps in pre-task planning, tool management, drawing reading, and 3D model usage and solved it with targeted training. Jason connects this insight to real examples like High Street and P1 Group's Forge training facility, emphasizing that skilled people, not just systems make the difference. A powerful reminder that builders need both the plan and the preparation. If you're new to a team or trying to level up field performance, this one's for you. A new in-person location to purchase the Kilkenny Gift Card has launched to enhance the convenience and accessibility of the initiative. St. Canice's Credit Union High Street is the first in-person location to purchase the Kilkenny Gift Card. The card was introduced in November 2025 by Kilkenny Chamber and Kilkenny County Council in an upgrade to the previous paper vouchers. Over €160,000 of the new Kilkenny Gift Cards have been sold since November, with the cards popular with organisations as employee rewards and for consumers as gifts. Molly Drennan, Head of Operations at St. Canice's Credit Union, said: "St. Canice's Credit Union is about community and has been a partner of the Chamber for many years. We previously sold the Kilkenny Gift Vouchers, so it's great for us to now sell the new high-tech Kilkenny Gift Card, as a way to give back to our local businesses. "It's really easy for people to buy the Kilkenny Gift Card from us by going up to the counter in our High Street branch and letting us know how much they want loaded onto the card. It takes minutes and is especially handy for people that want to support local and want the convenience of a card that's in their hand straight away. We have the end of the school year coming up so it'll be ideal for people buying gifts for teachers, Christmas, birthdays and many other occasions. "We've also got 'Load This Card' envelopes that contain the Gift Card that people can pick up and load with value themselves online at a later date, it's all about making supporting our community easy. As the Kilkenny Gift Card is accepted by so many good, quality businesses, it's a gift that anyone would be happy to receive. We look forward to welcoming people into the Credit Union in High St. to buy their Kilkenny Gift Card." John Hurley, chief executive at Kilkenny Chamber of Commerce, said: "Our objective is to make the Kilkenny Gift Card accessible and convenient to buy for a wide range of audiences. The digital version of the card can be purchased online and sent to the recipient in moments, and the launch of the new sales point at St. Canice's Credit Union High Street is important because it allows the physical version of the card to be purchased and given to the recipient in moments too. We look forward to continuing to work alongside St. Canice's Credit Union as we continue to build the Kilkenny Gift Card." Kilkenny County Council's Local Enterprise Office is backing the Kilkenny Gift Card as part of its #ShopKilkenny campaign for 2024. Aileen McGrath, Head of Enterprise, Kilkenny Local Enterprise Office said: "The Kilkenny Gift Card is going from strength to strength with over 120 businesses now accepting the card, across a wide range of sectors. Every Kilkenny Gift Card purchased is an investment in our city that will continue to circulate, powering our economy." The Kilkenny Gift Card is part of the multi award winning Town & City Gift Card concept active across Ireland. Colin Munro, CEO of Miconex, said: "It's fantastic to see the success of the Kilkenny Gift Card so far with over €160,000 in sales, over 120 businesses accepting the card, and the launch of the new sales point at St. Canice's Credit Union High Street. From our programs across Ireland, we know how vital a sales point is for locals and visitors who are keen to shop local and support the community."
