The then 22-year-old New York City native got a degree in communications and knew she liked health, wellness and business, “but I had no idea what I was going to do with my life,” she says. Post-graduation, she went back to New York but planned to move to L.A. permanently to see where life took her.Just months after graduating, however, Castle was diagnosed with stage 2 Hodgkin's Lymphoma, a cancer that attacks the immune system, and had to undergo six months of chemotherapy. Depressed, she began seeing a therapist who helped her see the moment as empowering and an opportunity. There were still ways in which she could take control. One such way was her diet — she could make sure to eat healthy even after her treatment. Castle began taking nutrition and cooking classes, but she quickly discovered something was missing: dessert. “I have a huge sweet tooth,” she says, and she couldn't find baked goods made with more whole foods that didn't use ingredients like bleached white flour, corn syrup and artificial chemicals. So Castle started trying to make healthier desserts for herself. Expo West 2025 is in the books. There were over 65,000 attendees. This was the first year where every exhibit hall opened at the exact same time. According to recent information, Expo West 2025 featured around 3,600 exhibitors (an increae from 3,000 last year) showcasing a wide range of natural and organic products across various categories like food, beverage, packaging, and wellness items.

Behind Her Empire

Loren Castle is the founder and CEO of Sweet Loren's, the better-for-you baking company that makes America's #1 natural cookie dough brand on the market. After being diagnosed with cancer in her early twenties, Loren faced many hurdles with treatment, depression, and her life being turned upside down at such a young age. Throughout the six months of chemotherapy, she dedicated her time to changing her diet, cutting out most dairy, artificial, and highly processed ingredients. She started taking cooking classes to learn how to make healthy and delicious food for herself. One thing that stood out to her at the time was that she could not find any delicious, clean baked goods on the market, so she made it her mission to create her own. After experimenting with hundreds of recipes, and sharing with family & friends, she eventually found the winning combination of ingredients to make her irresistible cookie dough and that's when Sweet Loren's was born. In 2012, she caught the attention of Whole Foods through a few unexpected events and a few years later gained national distribution at Publix. They're now in over 25,000+ retail doors across the country. In this week's episode, Loren talks about how she found her purpose while battling cancer, how she took her hobby & turned it into a real business, and the steps that helped her validate that she was actually onto something. Loren Brill Castle: Kicking Cancer, Honoring Your Sweet Tooth, and the Inspiration Behind Sweet Loren's Cookie DoughLoren (Brill) Castle is the CEO & founder of Sweet Loren's, a better-for-you baked goods company that is redefining what it means to be delicious and convenient. Sweet Loren's is the maker of the #1 cookie dough brand in the United States, as it's made from simple, non-GMO, gluten free, dairy free, plant-based ingredients and nut-free ingredients. Loren's mission to create health conscious sweets intensified after being diagnosed with stage 2 Hodgkin's Lymphoma at 22, on top of watching her mom battle Chronic Leukemia (CLL) throughout her youth. Loren's cancer diagnosis highlighted/illuminated the inseparable relationship between food and physical/mental health, and during her 6 months of chemotherapy, Loren filled up her free time with cooking classes and nutritionist appointments. Despite cleaning up her diet, Loren's sweet tooth wouldn't quit, but she refused to compromise her health by consuming harmful ingredients often found in conventional sweets. Loren quickly learned that her personal need to honor her sweet tooth was also a major public need–because who doesn't want to eat delicious treats and feel good about it after? At the end of the day, for Loren, leading a healthy life means listening to your body and honoring its cravings without deprivation, and Sweet Loren's is an embodiment of this worldview! How to create a kick-ass brand AND beat cancer with the founder and CEO of Sweet Loren's After beating cancer in her early twenties, founder/CEO Loren Brill made it her mission to eliminate processed foods from her diet. Unable to find great tasting cookies made from clean ingredients, she developed her own. A note from Loren:  My story begins with a question: How do I live a full life without regrets? A few things I've learned since beating cancer: Try new things. Work out. Experience the world. And treat yourself.  Living a full life also meant taking control over my health, happiness, and wellbeing: beginning with the food I eat every day. I cut out hydrogenated oils, high fructose corn syrup, artificial flavors, most dairy, and anything I couldn't pronounce. And replaced those foods with clean ones. In a very short amount of time, I felt more energetic, more alive, and more me.  But as a person with a serious sweet tooth, I was frustrated with the available clean-food options. So, I made my own. And Sweet Loren's was born.  I measure, mix and knead my heart into each Sweet Loren's recipe. I make sure that every product we make is accessible and made from only clean, Non-GMO, gluten-free, and plant-based ingredients. And, most importantly, every product we make tastes incredibly good.  Because we all deserve to live a full life filled with yum.

Arnie Malham is the founder of a number of different companies and organizations, including BetterBookClub.com. He's also the author of “Worth Doing Wrong,” where he discusses how to build a sustainable business model through company culture. Listen to this week's episode as he shares #hospitality insights with Dan Ryan today! Takeaways:  At work, your team will never treat clients better than how the boss treats the team. That is one of the many forms of hospitality.  If you put people in a position and don't pay them well and they don't believe in the team then there is a discomfort that grows.  Core values start with a team leader. It's easy for a leader to praise certain values but it's important that the leader also is willing to help with even the little things and show they are invested and they care. Embrace growth, always be confident, be optimistic, and prepare. These are 4 core values to have going through life.  It's the little things that can make a difference for a guest. Things like certain types of bedsheets and toilet paper can make them feel important and known.  As a team, don't say no to any idea. It's ok to be wrong, but saying no creates a roadblock and might discourage people from sharing anymore of their ideas. Quote of the Show: 6:26 I'm a believer in that the core values and culture start with the leader. And in fact, they start and end with a leader, that leader. The leader of an organization, a team that is the number one thing that sets the tone for culture and core values. And then what that leader does versus what that leader says. It's easy to go down a list and determine if those two things match up. I'll quote Jack Daly again. I'm pretty sure he said, ‘I can tell you your values based on your calendar. I can look at your calendar and tell you your values, because it doesn't matter what you say, the question is, are you doing the things that match your values, that match your priorities?' It's little things. It's where the leader parks, it's where the leaders are willing to participate in and the cleanliness of the environment. It's what he or she accepts and praises, but almost more importantly, what he or she tolerates. Today I talk to baking businesswoman Loren Brill. While battling Hodgkin's Lymphoma in her early twenties, Loren became interested in health foods. But she couldn't find many store-bought snacks that weren't loaded with artificial flavors and ingredients. So after she recovered from cancer, Loren set out on another life-affirming mission: She founded Sweet Loren's, which specializes in vegan cookie dough made with all-natural ingredients. Because she wanted to prove that one can be good to their body without giving up the sweet things in life. Find out more about Sweet Loren's at https://sweetlorens.com/. Is anything as universal as a cookie?   Loren Brill, founder and CEO of Sweet Loren's, stops by to talk about continuing her company's meteoric growth during a pandemic, building an inclusive culture, and setting an example for the next generation of female entrepreneurs. Check out some takeaways from this episode below: Food is more than just nourishment, it's a way for us to connect with each other. Sharing food, especially healthy food, is a great way to build communities & make our bodies feel better in the process Loren's advice for getting people to feel comfortable and open up: no judgement. Trust your team & celebrate their diversity by creating an open & welcoming environment. Loren grew her company on both coasts during the pandemic by non-work team building opportunities and being flexible with things like scheduling or remote working. And going up against established giants in the packaged food industry, their success comes from thinking about how they can outsmart their competition, rather than try to spend millions on marketing. One of the best ways to promote gender diversity in entrepreneurship is to give more visibility to female entrepreneurs. It helps normalize the idea for young girls that they can achieve their dreams and be part of the next generation of business leaders.  The key to a good hospitality experience: make everyone feel important. Going the extra mile for your customer, whether it's a hotel guest or purchaser for a supermarket chain, is something that can be set up as a system and built into your culture.  Innovation and growth can come from anywhere, even customer suggestions. Good customer relationships can allow you to test new ideas in a way that creates honest and constructive feedback, while still relying on traditional industry research to identify open space in the market for innovation.  Loren's advice to her younger self: Take advantage of every day. Make sure you're enjoying as much of life as possible, and don't be so hard on yourself. Because you're capable of conquering your wildest dreams.   Quote of the Show: 20:46 - “We have amazing fans and we get emails and messages all the time from parents that say that their daughter loves our cookie dough and loves seeing the back of our package. I have the story of how I created Sweet Loren's in a picture of me. And I think them just seeing that and being like, oh my God, that's it, that's a pretty young female, like, I could do that. I can do whatever I want, and I think just having more, seeing more role models out there of women just normalizes it so that, whoever you are, whatever age you are, you don't think it's weird or super hard. You're not at a disadvantage. If you're female it's totally been done, it's totally doable. And women should dream as big as they want.” - Loren Brill  Links:  Website: www.SweetLorens.com Twitter: @SweetLorens, @LorenBrill   Email: hello@sweetlorens.com LinkedIn:

A battle with cancer taught Loren Brill four important concepts to live a full life without regret? Try new things. Work out. Experience the world. And: treat yourself. Loren founded Sweet Loren's, offering pre-made cookie dough and edible cookie dough crafted with clean, plant-based, gluten-free, dairy free, and non GMO ingredients. Her altered diet while facing cancer turned  into a driver for her own business, which went from creating prototypes in her kitchen to becoming a nationwide smash success. And less than eight years later, Sweet Loren's is in more than 10,000 supermarkets and is the top selling clean cookie dough. Loren shares the one thing she wishes she could've had early on in her business that would have been  crucial to successfully building a company, how surviving a pandemic may rest on listening to yourself and what brings joy,  and how Loren is navigating her own big "then what" moment (next level partnerships, new products, and finding causes and charities to support ) thanks to what she's been able to achieve.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

This is embodied by Waiākea’s slogan “Drink Healthy, Drink Sustainably, Drink Ethically”. Waiākea volcanic water originates in Hawai’i through both snowmelt and rain on the pristine peak of the active Mauna Loa volcano, one of the purest environments on Earth. The water is then filtered through thousands of feet of porous volcanic rock that enriches Waiākea with a variety of trace minerals, making it electrolyte rich and naturally alkaline, before emerging at its source, surrounded by rich forest preserves just outside quiet Hilo town. In accordance with the Hawaiian practice and notion of “malama i ka ‘aina”, meaning “to respect and care for the land”, Waiākea is also proud to be the first American premium bottled water and beverage to be certified Carbon Neutral for its variety of eco-initiatives, including using 100% RPET packaging, sustainable sourcing, and its regional reforestation projects. Loren Brill knew she had to change the way she ate. She was 22, she had just graduated college, and she was diagnosed with cancer. Eating healthy helped Loren to beat the cancer, but she found that giving up cookies and other baked goods was one of the hardest parts. Loren took matters literally into her own hands, and created her own gluten free cookie dough recipe. Her cookies were a huge hit with her family and her own marketing department -- her sister. Loren was inspired to set out on a sweet mission: make delicious gluten-free, organic cookies that are a healthy alternative to the preservative filled cookie dough we all grew up with. Her company Sweet Loren’s was way ahead of the clean eating trend. She caught the attention of Whole Foods, who went from "hello' to "yes" in their very first meeting, when her company was still only half-baked. Less than eight years later, Sweet Loren’s is in more than 10,000 supermarkets and is the top selling clean cookie dough. Loren shares her journey with Julia Pimsleur, including how she went from feeling overwhelmed to actually enjoying problem solving; how she learned to see that she and her company are not one and the same; why suffering a personal loss pushed Loren to the next important step in her business; how Loren makes sure she is building a sustainable business; and, the mindset practices Loren has adopted that keep her centered and moving forward.

Loren Brill started Sweet Loren’s after overcoming Hodgkin’s lyphoma at the age of 22. She started studying nutrition and took cooking classes, and soon cut out all highly refined ingredients. Without delicious cookies and brownies in the marketplace that were made of ingredients that she wanted in her body, she realized that she would have to make her own, and soon, Sweet Loren’s was born. Loren is a graduate of Columbia University’s Columbia Community Business Program (’12), University of Southern California’s Annenberg School of Communication (’06), she completed the Master Class in Cooking at the New School, and is a certified Hatha Yoga instructor. She loves yoga, running, cycling, painting, traveling, the beach, dinners with friends, and has an insatiable sweet tooth.     On Today's show Loren will share: -What’s Your Personal Mission Statement My personal mission is to improve the baking industry by creating enlightened alternatives to conventional baked goods. I believe that your body is your temple—but, that doesn’t mean you can’t have fun and indulge, just choose smartly. Personally, I know I am happier and have more energy when I eat food that enhances my wellbeing—and to me, that means eating as whole and natural ingredients as possible. As a foodie, I always want delicious taste, and that the food I choose to eat takes me on an emotional adventure. I try to lead an active, healthy lifestyle that includes balance and conscious choices—even amidst a busy schedule. We live once—and I want to live life to the fullest. I know that good food helps us be our best self, and that it’s important to celebrate often--with yourself and those you love. Cancer has affected my family so much—my mother passed a way from a chronic leukemia in 2010, and I overcame Hodgkin’s Lymphoma at the age of 22. Cancer is an epidemic that we’ve almost all been affected by. My goal is to not only inspire a healthier lifestyle in those around me, but also to be able to give back to cancer research in a big way as we grow. My goal is to change the world—through cookies—one day. -Biggest Business Mistake Ugh. Where to begin! Looking back, it is hard to have regrets, because I had to do what I did in that moment. If I could do it again, I would wish to start my business with a partner with complimentary strengths. If it’s the right partnership, you can go twice as fast. Also, I wished that I researched the industry more and wrote a more in depth business plan at the beginning. My business started the complete opposite way—it started with only me, creating recipes in my mom’s kitchen with my younger sister as my official taste tester—and Whole Foods Market being our first customer. I went from 0 to 60, really fast. -How Do You Handle Business Stress and Uncertainty I deal with uncertainty and stress with daily workouts, healthy food choices, meditation, and talking to everyone I respect in business…a lot. I have days of total clarity, and then days of total distraction. It is hard to stay stress-free when juggling so much, and having so much at risk in something you so believe in. I share what I am going through a lot with other entrepreneurs, and listen to what others in business and the food industry can share. Between all of the people that I talk to, I get an instinct of what feels right to do next. And, that gives me some sort of certainty so that I can lead my company the best and most direct way that I can. Doing yoga, going for a run outside, eating fresh food—all make me realize that I am just happy to be alive, right here, right now. -Greatest Business Decision That Changed Everything Talk to anyone and everyone. I went straight up to Hoda Kotb from NBC’s The Today Show at a Fashion Night Out Event in NYC back in 2010, when I had just launched SL. Even though she was out with her girlfriends, I just walked up to her and told her all about Sweet Loren’s. Her best friend loved the concept, and invited me to drinks with them the next night. I just kept in touch with them --for over a year. When I emailed Hoda that I thought her viewers would love to hear about Sweet Loren’s, she told me she wanted me on and was going to interview me live the next week on the Today Show. That changed everything. -Best Book For The Entrepreneurial Mindset I wish I had more time to read. Great books stay with you forever. I was very motivated by Steve Jobs’ biography. It feels good to see that nothing amazing is done over night, or easily. It simply takes time, care, attention, and an undying passion to make the best possible product you can. It also shows me that you don’t have to be the best at everything. Find your strengths and own them—hire people around you to round out an all-star team. - Plus much more...

Loren started experimenting in her mother's kitchen in 2007 with truly wholesome cookie recipes after overcoming cancer.
