In this tenth, rather special episode, of the How to Write a Book podclass series, hosts Sara Collins, Sharmaine Lovegrove and Nelle Andrew turn the microphone around to quiz their friend, executive producer and bestselling author Elizabeth Day, on her life's work and writing journey. Of course, Elizabeth knows more than most about the trials and tribulations of writing a book - having penned nine of them herself, writing her first novel at 29 and since then working in every form - non-fiction, children's and screenplays. She has come up against all of the questions we ask throughout this series and, like every writer, she's travelled a long and winding road along the way. Throughout her journey, she's received gentle help and guidance from people who saw something in her. This is particularly true of Sara, Nelle and Sharmaine, who have all offered Elizabeth wise literary guidance and are exceptionally qualified to do so. Together, Sara, Sharmaine, Nelle and Elizabeth are your on-hand writing community giving you the push you need to get started on that novel, memoir, or piece of non fiction you've always dreamed of writing. Publisher and editor Sharmaine Lovegrove joins Ceri in this week's episode of the Extraordinary Creatives podcast. Despite dealing with dyslexia and homelessness and as a teen, Sharmaine has beaten the odds to become an award-winning MD, publisher and editor. She shares how books were her safe haven growing up and discusses her unique journey to the top of the publishing world. Sharmaine offers incredible, inspiring advice to aspiring creatives and reveals her secret to keeping her creative cup full (hint: it's not PG!). Tune in to hear this remarkable woman's story. KEY TAKEAWAYS Sharmaine turned to books as an escape in response to feeling like an outsider growing up in a multicultural London. Reading gave her confidence and perspective. She became a truth seeker due to experiencing trauma growing up – she now uses that skill to help authors excavate stories and ideas. Sharmaine doesn't want to be the protagonist in every situation, instead finding confidence in supporting others' brilliance shine rather than having to be centre stage. Deciding to move to Berlin gave Sharmaine space, time with family, and more focus on editing -  staying connected to the heart of publishing while avoiding the noise. Modelling psychological safety as a leader helps Sharmaine ensure that her team feels comfortable stretching themselves, failing, and growing together. Sharmaine is committed to pleasure and joy which help keep her creative cup full, she always makes time for sex, food, and Arsenal football! BEST MOMENTS  "Being an immigrant Mom in Germany showed me I didn't grow up in an immigrant household - it taught me the difference between ethnic minority and immigrant." In this Film Ireland podcast, Gemma Creagh talks to Kim Bartley, Director of ‘Pure Grit', a thrilling tale of extreme bareback horse racing, and an intimate love story. Pure Grit chronicles three years in the life of a young Native American bareback horse racer Sharmaine, her dogged determination, and the relationships that sustain her. Sharmaine dreams of becoming a champion again but she needs money to compete, and jobs are scarce on the reservation. Sharmaine quit racing and her job to care for her sister who was paralyzed in a catastrophic accident on the racetrack. When the atmosphere at home turns toxic, Sharmaine and her girlfriend Savannah are forced to leave the Wyoming wilderness for the industrial Commerce City, Denver. The city brings freedom and opportunity, but also distractions and a strain on their fledgling relationship. When racing season starts up, Sharmaine and Savannah hit the road and put it all on the line. With a new horse from her city earnings, Sharmaine sees the potential for a fresh start. But life, like the racetrack, doesn't always go according to plan. Pure Grit is in cinemas from 30th September 2022.

We love working with an amazing dental team while keeping up with advancements in dental technology and continuing education. Things have changed a lot over the last 20 years which keeps being a dentist exciting. We have added state of the art equipment such as digital x-rays, digital treatment planning and laser dentistry to name a few.It feels good to be able to fulfill the needs of our patients and make going to the dentist enjoyable. Listen to episode 363 of the Inspirational Living podcast: Henry Ward Beecher | Wisdom & Quotes. Edited from the works of Henry Ward Beecher. Inspirational Podcast Excerpt: Welcome to the Inspirational Living podcast. A special thanks to our newest patron Sharmaine Jennings. Coming up this Sunday, I’ll be starting again the series Our Sunday Talks, exclusively for patrons like Sharmaine. The first 13 episodes will be a complete reading of my book The Lord’s Prayer for Daily Life, a thought-provoking and non-dogmatic meditation of this beloved prayer. Learn how you can become our patron at: LivingHour.org/patron. Thank you. Today’s reading was edited and adapted from the writings of Henry Ward Beecher.  “‎Hold yourself responsible for a higher standard than anybody else expects of you. Never excuse yourself. Never pity yourself. Be a hard taskmaster to yourself — and be lenient to everybody else.” “No person can tell whether they are rich or poor by turning to their bank book. It is in the heart that riches lie. You are rich according to what you are, not according to what he have.” “If you harbor any sort of fear, it percolates through all your thinking, damages your personality, makes you landlord to a ghost.” “The art of being happy lies in the power of extracting happiness from common things.” “We should not judge people by their peak of excellence; but by the distance they have traveled from the point where they started.” “Never forget what someone says to you when they are angry — for that reveals their hidden feelings.” “Books are not made for furniture, but there is nothing else that so beautifully furnishes a house…A little library, growing larger every year, is an honorable part of a person's history. It is our duty to have books. A library is not a luxury but one of the necessities of life…..Books are the windows through which the soul looks out. A home without books is like a room without windows.”

In this episode, I had the immense privilege of chatting with Sharmaine Lovegrove. Sharmaine is the incredibly talented publisher of Dialogue Books, an imprint of Little, Brown UK that publishes stories for, about and by underrepresented voices, including BAME, LGBTQI+, disabled and working class writers. It's no coincidence that two of my favourite books in the last two years -The Leavers by Lisa Ko and Remembered by Yvonne Battle-Felton - have been published by Sharmaine and her team. These beautiful stories, and the authors who wrote them, deserve to be celebrated. I'm certainly not alone in this belief as these two books and others have been read and loved by thousands around the world. Sharmaine and I chatted about how much Dialogue has accomplished in two years, the stories that we will continue to love and why readers should read as many new books as possible. This week on How To Fail With Elizabeth Day, my guest is the brilliant Sharmaine Lovegrove. Sharmaine is a champion of stories. As a publisher, she heads up her own imprint, Dialogue Books, at Little, Brown and has been instrumental in bringing more diverse voices into print. But Sharmaine is also one of the most dynamic and inspiring women I've ever had the privilege of meeting. This is a woman who survived a challenging childhood and ended up living on the streets while studying for her A-Levels. This is a woman who, through sheer force of will, began selling second-hand books under the arches of Waterloo Bridge before rising through the ranks to head up her own publishing imprint. This is a woman who, despite the myriad obstacles she faced along the way, set up the first English language bookshop in Berlin and became literary editor of Elle magazine. This is a woman who says, quite candidly, that books saved her life. We talk about failure to be a child, failure to conform and failure to be a perfectionist (and I discover you can Deliveroo pizza to a park. MIND. BLOWN.) You might not have heard of Sharmaine before this podcast episode, but after listening to her story, you will quite possibly become her biggest fan.   How To Fail With Elizabeth Day is hosted by Elizabeth Day, produced by Chris Sharp and sponsored by 4th Estate Books   The book of the podcast, How To Fail: Everything I've Ever Learned From Things Going Wrong by Elizabeth Day is available to pre-order here.   Be sure to check out the forthcoming titles from Dialogue Books !   Social Media: Elizabeth Day @elizabday Sharmaine Lovegrove: @sharlove Dialogue Books @dialoguebooks  Chris Sharp @chrissharpaudio 4th Estate Books @4thEstateBooks
