Everyone knows someone with diabetes or heart disease or non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. It's impossible to find somebody who doesn't have at least one victim of these diseases in their family or friends circle. That's how widespread they've become. All these disorders share one thing in common – all are ‘lifestyle diseases' linked to insulin resistance and metabolic dysfunction. For the longest time, India's biggest public health challenge was controlling infectious diseases. But now we have an epidemic of lifestyle diseases, causing millions of premature deaths. A new book ‘Sick Nation', drills down to the root causes of this epidemic. What are the factors driving it? Why do people ignore the signs until it is too late? And what can you, as an individual, do to protect yourself from this growing epidemic of metabolic dysfunction? This week on Fat Science, Dr. Emily Cooper, Andrea Taylor, and Mark Wright explore the dangers of under-fueling and challenge dieting myths with guest Gina Davito. This episode dives into Gina's journey from extreme restriction and over-exercising to finally achieving metabolic balance and freedom from food obsession. Dr. Cooper sheds light on the science behind metabolic adaptation, appetite regulation, and why fueling your body—rather than restricting—is essential for long-term health. Listeners will come away with a new perspective on weight management, the power of metabolic healing, and a celebration of food as a source of nourishment and joy.Key Takeaways:Chronic dieting and excessive exercise can trigger severe metabolic adaptation and worsen weight gain, creating a cycle that is hard to break without proper medical support.Abnormal hunger and weight gain are symptoms of underlying metabolic dysfunction, not lack of willpower—often exacerbated by early and repeated dieting.True progress involves nourishing the body and trusting medical guidance, sometimes including tailored medications to reset metabolic balance.Mental freedom from food-related anxiety arrives with metabolic healing—allowing for joy in eating and exercise for health rather than punishment.Early interventions for kids showing unusual hunger or weight patterns should focus on metabolic evaluation, not restriction.Personal Stories & Practical Advice:Gina describes her transformation from compulsive restriction to vibrant health and athleticism—no longer trapped by thoughts of food or weight.Andrea and Mark share their relief at experiencing food freedom and highlight the importance of enjoying both food and movement.Resources from the episode:Fat Science is a podcast on a mission to explain where our fat really comes from and why it won't go and stay away. 50 million people suffer with dementia today, that figure will triple in the coming 20 years. While genetics does play a role, lifestyle and behaviours such as the foods we eat are a siginificant contributor to whether we become a dementa patient or not. I examine the role food plays in our potential to acquire dementia. Plus I look at the foods that accelerate the likelihood of us suffering cognitive decline, and contrast these against brain boosting foods. In this podcast, Dr. Rodney and Karen talk about the Standard American Diet (SAD) and its impact on our health and potential longevity.Despite the fact that the United States outspends more than most of the world on medical care, they rank 43rd in life expectancy among large wealthy countries. What did you eat yesterday? Was it nutrient rich or simply calorie rich?Unfortunately, too many of us are in constant hurry resulting in popping pre-packaged food into the microwave or going through the drive-through. This type of food is calorie rich but has little nutritional value. To make matters worse, we crave more of these food because of the additives included in the package. We pack on extra pounds and damage our body's insulin regulation, deposit fat in the wrong places and increase inflammation throughout our bodies. All this could lead to an early grave. At She Births we begin our course with nutrition! Because, you are what you eat, right… Today's guest is Lily Nichols. She is a registered dietitian/nutritionist and certified diabetes educator. Lily has worked in prenatal nutrition public policy, consulting, research, writing, and clinical practice. She has an in-depth understanding of why conventional policy is what it is and where there's room for improvement. For me personally what is amazing about @lilynicholsrdn is that she has all the science (over 930 citations in her books) showing us that mums and babies are both impacted by diet, in the short term and the long term. There was so much to cover in this conversation. Together Lily and I discuss simple ways you can tweak your diet to not only optimise your health but also improve your birthing outcomes. We talk about my favourite, magnesium! And of course, gluten, grains, glyphosates and soy. Why knowing and understanding your GI levels is important for ALL pregnant women, not just GD mums. How we minimise the risk of induction by changing our diet and improve the health of our children by what we eat during pregnancy. Visit Lily's site https://lilynicholsrdn.com and check out Lily's bestselling books; Real Food for Pregnancy & Real Food for Gestational Diabetes.
