This ain't no trip to Lapland, and it's not your moms plum pudding. And it's most certainly not a hallucination brought on by Russian vodka poisoned by Chernobyl! What it is, is a Yuletide celebration to rival any stocking stuffer you're sure receive. Let us never forget the sentiments of Frank Cross at this time of year. The most magical moment for humanity. Yule love it!It's Christmas time in Hollis Queens, mom's cooking chicken.....oops, wrong miracle monologue. It's Christmas Eve! It's the one night of the year when we all act a little nicer, we smile a little easier, we cheer a little more. For a couple of hours out of the whole year, we are the people that we always hoped we would be. It's really a sort of a miracle, because it happens every Christmas Eve. And if you waste that miracle, you're gonna burn for it, I know what I am talking about. You have to do something. You have to take a chance. You do have to get involved. There are people that are having trouble making their miracle happen. There are people that don't have enough to eat, or people that are cold. You can go out and say hello to these people. You can take an old blanket out of the closet and say "Here!", you can make them a sandwich and say "Oh, by the way, here!" I get it now! And if you give, then it can happen, then the miracle can happen to you! It's not just the poor and the hungry, it's everybody's who's gotta have this miracle! And it can happen tonight for all of you! If you believe in this spirit thing, the miracle will happen and then you'll want it to happen again tomorrow. You won't be one of these bastards who says "Christmas is once a year and it's a fraud", it's NOT! It can happen every day, you've just got to want that feeling. And if you like it and you want it, you'll get greedy for it! You'll want it every day of your life and it can happen to you! I believe in it now! I believe it's going to happen to me now! I'm ready for it! And it's great. It's a good feeling, it's really better than I've felt in a long time. I'm ready. Have a Merry Christmas, everybody.Shitter's full.

Our guest is the Rev. Al Sharpton, whose activism has made him a fixture in the press for decades in his hometown of New York City. Lately, though, we often see him as the eulogist at funeral after funeral of those taken too soon through violence. He does it with enormous grace and power, including after the murder of George Floyd in Minneapolis in 2020. And there’s a reason for that. As Rev. Sharpton explains to Kevin Burke in this rare interview, there’s a traumatic incident that happened to him a long time ago, when he was 9 years old, that gives him the ability to speak to children who are in pain, because there is a pain deep inside of him that permanently shaped the arc of his formation as a preacher and future civil rights leader. It’s a story he doesn’t tell often, because it’s so surprising and unexpected, but in this episode, you’ll hear him share it in the most personal way. I had just come to New York and I was working with Kenny Dorham in the fall of 1959. I heard John (Coltrane) wanted to form his own quartet and leave Miles. Out of the blue I got his number and called him. I said, "I know you don't know who I am. I'm currently working with Kenny Durham but I would love it if we could get together and maybe play a little and talk about the music." He didn't say yay or nay, a couple of weeks later he called me and he had rented a little rehearsal studio about a block and a half from my hotel and we met there in a tiny room and an upright piano. We played some of his music and talked. That was it for then and didn't hear anything until he called me a week later and said, "I'd like you to come out to my house in Hollis Queens for dinner." I took the subway out there and he picked me up at the train. We had a lovely dinner that Naima made. We talked and played a little more and he drove me back to my hotel in New York. He said nothing and then about a week later he called and said, "would $125 a week be okay to start." He had a job at "The Jazz Gallery" in downtown Manhattan on the lower east side. He was hired for four weeks initially and then they kept extending it two weeks, two weeks. He was there a total of 26 weeks in a row which is unheard of. A half a year playing in the same place, six nights a week. I was privileged to work with him for two of those months. Then McCoy Tyner joined the band. I later found out that McCoy was his first choice but he was contractually bound to "The Jazztet" at the time and he couldn't get free until that particular time. To be experiencing the absolute joy of the audience. It would be like a church meeting, after his solos they would literally stand up and give him standing ovations in the middle of the song. Pete LaRoca was the drummer and Steve David was the bassist. I was still trying to find my own voice when I was working with Coltrane. I was not really happy with my own playing, I'd say to him, "is there something I'm doing that you don't like or is there something you'd like me to do that I'm not doing. His words were, "I respect you too much as a musician to tell you how to play." --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/jake-feinberg/support

This week, we are thrilled to have the opportunity to talk with Darryl McDaniels for The Hardcore Humanism Podcast. McDaniels – otherwise known as “DMC” – is perhaps best known as a member of the legendary Hip Hop group Run-DMC. Run-DMC is considered one of the greatest Hip Hop groups of all time. Rolling Stone rated Run-DMC as among the 100 greatest artists of all time across the rock & roll musical genre, and their albums Run-D.M.C. (1984) and Raising Hell (1986) as among the greatest albums of all time. They have been the recipients of the Grammy’s Lifetime Achievement Award (2016) as well as inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (2009). In the Hardcore Humanism Podcast, we strive to talk with open-minded, independent thinkers who challenge conventional norms to find their purpose and work hard to achieve it. Our hope is that readers and listeners will be inspired by these stories to try and consider how they may be able to find a stronger sense of purpose and work hard to achieve it. Each individual with whom we speak has a slightly different approach to discovering and enacting their purpose. In this conversation, McDaniels explains one of the most crucial processes by which he has been able to achieve professional success and emotional well-being – imagination. During our conversation, McDaniels explains how imagination had positive effects on his life in four main ways. First and foremost, as a young child growing up in Hollis Queens, his imagination was sparked through his love of comic books. Those comic books opened his mind to a whole world that he would have otherwise never encountered. This was critical for McDaniels by helping him form and validate his self-concept as he saw aspects of himself in superheroes such as Spiderman. Second, his imagination manifested as creativity initially as he began to draw and contemplate making comic books himself. This ultimately led to his forming his own comic book company, Darryl Makes Comics. Further, his imagination spurred creativity as a Hip Hop artist, in which his persona of DMC and lyrics were heavily influenced by his love for and experience with comic books such that he became a Hip Hop superhero – a larger than life figure. And Mcdaniels goes into detail about the process by which he worked on his creative goals both in his comic book development and Hip Hop career. Finally, McDaniels explained how during the current Covid-19 crisis, his creativity has actually been an active treatment for existential dread brought about by the pandemic. Taken together, McDaniels lays out a powerful rationale for the importance of imagination in developing one’s sense of well-being. We hope you enjoy and learn from our conversation with Darryl McDaniels! If you like what you hear, we'd be so grateful if you'd add a rating and a review! Thank you!

In the early hours of March 13th 1964, after finishing her shift as a barmaid at Ev's Eleventh Hour Bar in Hollis Queens, 28 year old Kitty Genovese drove home to her apartment and pulled in to the Kew Gardens Apartment Complex in her red convertible Fiat. As she exited from her vehicle and began to walk to her apartment she was brutally attacked by an assailant named Winston Mosley on 2 separate attacks and eventually died from her wounds. While it was reported back then by the New York Times, 38 witnesses saw the murder happen and did nothing to help Kitty, it has now come to light that the article written by The New York Times was inaccurate and severely flawed. On this episode we will delve into what really happened that night and, in fact, we will also shed light on the so called, apathetic bystanders who tried to help Kitty on that fateful night. He’s the DMC in the legendary Run-DMC, a titan of the music industry. The group became known as the movie stars of rap. Busta Rhymes said of them “They didn’t just change music, they changed everything.” Presenter Joe Pascal meets the Devastating Mic Controller himself - Darryl 'DMC' McDaniels. He grew up in Hollis Queens and was at the forefront of revolutionary change in the New York music scene with the explosion of hip hop. He was there, watching, from the early days, with the DJs and MCs at the neighbourhood block parties. And then, alongside Run and Jam Master Jay, they became a music phenomenon – with their new kind of rap bringing hip hop to the masses. They had their own look, their own style. DMC talks us through those early years and his later battles with alcoholism and depression. What gave him solace in that time was a song, a pop ballad that he listened to for an entire year. He would take it everywhere he went and play it, every day, morning to night. DMC’s other passion is comic books, they fuelled his imagination and education and ultimately gave him the superpower he needed to get up on stage.
