In a thought-provoking episode of Women with AI, Jagger Waters explores artificial intelligence's transformative impact on filmmaking. Drawing on her extensive experience in original content development, Waters discusses how she began exploring AI during the Hollywood Writers Strike in 2023. She recognised this as an opportunity to innovate within an industry facing significant challenges. She shares her insights on how AI tools can facilitate the creation of pre-visualisation materials, enabling storytellers to present their ideas with greater clarity and impact. This shift enhances the creative process and democratises filmmaking, allowing a broader range of voices and perspectives to emerge in the industry.Takeaways:AI tools empower filmmakers to create visual materials that enhance storytelling and communication. Jagger emphasises the importance of staying educated about AI's impact on creative industries. She highlights the contrast between fear surrounding AI and the supportive community she found. Every entrepreneur who sets out to start their own venture has dreams about disrupting their chosen space and building their business into a thriving force to be reckoned with. The fact remains that very few entrepreneurs are up to facing the challenges of getting knocked down only to have the guts and determination to get back up again. This week's guest is the kind of warrior-founder who has tapped into that inner strength of a champion and is determined to make his mark on the streaming wars and influencer space of modern media, no matter what comes his way! Madison Clavon is the CEO of Fightstars Network, a revolutionary platform that provides fighters, promotion companies, and talent in the business of combat sports a way to monetize themselves through a unique marketplace of influencers and sponsorships. After learning the ropes of production during a behind the scenes role as a gaffer and production assistant in Hollywood, Madison hit his plateau in that business and took the risk of leaving everything to create something he was truly passionate about. Fightstars began leading the way in developing combat sports content and acquiring other shows to build out the network. Inspired by their early success, Madison moved everything to the fight capital of the world, Las Vegas, to open up a media center gym where fighters can train, create content, and focus on recovery. Everything was going well until tragically his mentor and business partner took his own life. Filled with grief and determined more than ever to make the business work, Madison picked himself up off the mat and completely re-branded and re-imagined Fightstars, taking on investment and expertise from outside companies and expanding their vision to help fighters gain the exposure and monetization to take their careers to the next level.   Topics include: Overcoming Startup Obstacles  Turning Your Passions Into Paydays The Future of Streaming Combat Sports  Unpacking Fightstar Networks Potential   Follow Madison & Fightstars Network: Website Linkedin Instagram Youtube   Follow John: Instagram TikTok LinkedIn   2000 Percent Raise (Book)   More 2000 Percent Raise Episodes and Content   Produced by Social Chameleon

This week Mary Ann, Natasha and Alex celebrated one final episode as a three, and here's what we got into:Deals of the Week: Alex wanted to talk about the slowing of growth amongst tech companies, Natasha had notes on a brace of new Mayfield funds, while Mary Ann brought Wellthy to the table.Next we discussed pessimism in fintech, if it is near its peak, and how companies like Petal are still forging ahead regardless of market chop. From there we dug into AI, how it will impact certain creative work, and what it could mean for tech workers who traditionally have not organized. And we closed with a very Natasha topic: Accelerators.Natasha led us out of the show with a final Equity sign-off as she announced her time with the podcast, and TechCrunch, is coming to a close. We are going to miss her awfully, but are also her biggest fans and cheering her on!Equity will be back before you know it, but in the meantime, you can catch us on Twitter @EquityPod. And for the early-stage founders out there, don't forget to apply for the Startup Battlefield 200 cohort at TechCrunch Disrupt 2023!For episode transcripts and more, head to Equity's Simplecast website. Equity drops at 7:00 a.m. PT every Monday, Wednesday and Friday, so subscribe to us on Apple Podcasts, Overcast, Spotify and all the casts. TechCrunch also has a great show on crypto, a show that interviews founders, one that details how our stories come together and more!

Hollywood writers represented by the Writers Guild of America, East, and the Writers Guild of America, West, are on strike for the first time since 2007-08. As Alex Press writes in Jacobin, "The WGA (West and East) called the strike just before midnight on May 1, with its leadership unanimously voting for a work stoppage after six weeks of negotiations with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) over a new three-year contract that covers some 11,500 film and television writers. Announcing its decision, the union said that the bargaining table responses of the AMPTP, which consists of Amazon, Apple, Discovery-Warner, Disney, NBC Universal, Netflix, Paramount, and Sony, had 'been wholly insufficient given the existential crisis writers are facing.'" Even though overall production budgets have risen in the past decade, writer pay has declined, and the rise of streaming services has translated to lower residuals for writers, shorter paid work periods and more precarious employment, etc., with studios even threatening to replace more essential creative labor with AI software. In this mini-cast, we speak about what led to the writers' strike, and get an update from the picket line, with Sasha Stewart, a WGA-East council member and Writers Guild Award nominated TV writer, producer, and creator. With a background in improv and sketch comedy, Sasha has written for, among other productions, The Nightly Show with Larry Wilmore (Comedy Central) and The Fix with Jimmy Carr (Netflix), and she contributes to McSweeney's and The New Yorker. She was also the Head Writer on the YA political thriller podcast Daughters of DC (iHeartRadio). Additional links/info below...
