Heidi Jurka joins us from the Blue Ridge Mountains and talks about her new book, The Making of a Psychic. She describes her childhood growing up in Hudson Valley NY, and the intuition that guided her to renowned physician, inventor and researcher Andrija Puharich, who recognized her as a "Space Kid" and employed her as his assistant. Heidi, who is featured in the upcoming documentary "Mind Travelers" about Puharich, discusses her work in his lab, the Mind Link project she was involved in, and the amazing story of psychic surgeon Pachita, whom Dr. Puharich studied in Mexico -- including a psychic surgery Heidi attended. Decades later Heidi learned the truth about the fire that burned in Dr. Puharich's lab and home, which she narrowly escaped. Dreams of Consciousness

Dreams of Consciousness Podcast Episode 239 features an interview with Charles Cure of Hush. Hudson Valley NY's Hush demonstrate that there's still room for innovation in the realms of sludge metal and atmospheric doom. With their bass-centric sound, theirs is a particularly rumbly and cinematic take on slow, heavy music. I spoke with vocalist Charles Cure about why Hush has two bassists, and the way their sound evolved to be more cinematic. We also discussed how a bad car accident served as a backdrop to the latest Hush album, The Pornography Of Ruin, and the inspiration behind the songs' cryptic titles. My thanks to Charles for speaking with me, and to all of you for listening. On Episode 12 of the Pursuit of Health Podcast, Dr. Fethke invites a local colleague, Dr. Richard Hahn - an experienced Pediatric Psychiatrist - to address a very important and timely issue: the Mental Health of Children during the Covid-19 pandemic.   Dr. Hahn is a graduate of several prestigious institutions, including the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT),  NY Medical College,  Cornell Medical Center, and NY-Presbyterian Hospital. For the past 25 years, he has been a Consulting Psychiatrist for the Hudson Valley NY public schools, NY's Putnam and Northern Westchester counties' BOCES, and the NJ Child Study teams. He has been a mental health Consultant  at Vassar College of NY, served as the Vice President of NY's Chapter of the American Society for Adolescent Psychiatry, and continues to serve as an Educational Counselor on behalf of his alma mater, MIT.   Dr. Hahn begins the episode by calling attention to decades old pre-existing legislation that was intended to strengthen and expand mental health services in the U.S., but have yet to meet their full potential because of political and economic conflicts of interest. He expresses his concerns about longstanding deficits in resources available to train and support mental health professionals.  He invites us into the world of School-based Pediatric Psychiatry, stressing the importance of providing care at this local community level for both children and their families. He provides keen insights into the social dynamics of American families' whose members are often spread out across the country with the public education system as the only glue that still holds us all together.  The discussion then turns front and center to the Psychological Impacts of the Covid-19 Pandemic on our Children. He teaches us that “Isolation is as bad an issue as the virus.” He urges families to be conscientious about exposing kids to age-inappropriate stresses while confined at home in tight quarters with their families. He gives us great advice to make engaging our children in direct communication and interactions a priority so that they can feel safe to share their own thoughts and concerns.  With his unique combination of basic science background in Biology and years of experience as a frontline pediatric psychiatrist, he remains convinced that the Covid-19 vaccine is a critical intervention for both the physical and mental health of our children. Only when we all work together to achieve herd immunity can our children get back to school and normal life.  As we finish this poignant episode, Dr. Hahn gives us all hope with a powerfully unique solution to our nation's mental health crisis.  We owe it to our children to heed his advice and keep moving forward.  Next time, on POH  Ep 13, Dr. Fethke is honored to introduce his most influential mentor, Dr. Welton Gersony, to our audience. This world-renowned Pediatric Cardiologist takes us back to the fundamentals of patient care with Words of Wisdom - How to Best Communicate with Patients as a Physician. You can follow Dr. Eric Fethke on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and Tik Tok @drfethkemd(This episode will also available in video format on Youtube @drfethkemd).

Russell Urban-Mead is a senior Hydrogeologist at the Chazen Companies who specializes in groundwater supply, remediation, and natural resource management projects for Towns, brownfield site owners, stream and shoreline sites, and urban redevelopment centers.    In this episode, Russell shares how he made his 200+-year-old Hudson Valley NY home 99% fossil fuel free by applying his scientific skills, patience, and elbow grease. Russell first applied inexpensive energy efficiency measures to reduce his family's energy consumption. Today, Solar Photovoltaic energy supplies his family's electricity, powers a geothermal heat pump for all their heating and cooling – and reduces the other 1/3 of their greenhouse gases with a 2-year-old electric car (that they purchased for the price of a Honda Civic.)   All at the daily electrical equivalent cost of less than $2 a day. This past summer, we've had some very hot days. The energy equivalent cost of the air conditioning to cool the house was about 75 cents a day . Well, I was wondering about your journey a little bit.Well, I call my audience Green Future Growers, mostly they are interested in growing a lot of food, they have large backyard gardens, they are master gardeners, but I have gotten a lot of new listeners so there might be more new gardeners. I started my podcast in January 2015, and I have done 318 interviews with backyard gardeners, market farmers, etc and so I feel like since I started my podcast I could keep a class of students alive if I had to.  My husband and I live on 20 acres in NW Montana, so deer is a big challenge here. Many listeners etc say that is a giant challenge. Mikes goal is trying to grow as much of our own produce as we can but this year we are trying to do more, we are even looking into having a (https://wwoofusa.org/) coming to stay and maybe help Mike because we feel like this land should produce as much as it can and more then Mike can by himself in case we need food in the fall. It wasn’t until I saw children in a garden—holding seeds, planting them, touching the soil, and smelling, harvesting, and tasting food (nature)—that I knew they were truly perceiving their place in the natural world. And it made perfect sense. The most direct and intimate way to connect with nature is, clearly, to eat it. A small part of it becomes a small part of you—and it fills you up a little more every time. Eventually you begin to realize that you have always been 100 percent nature, that you are made of the same components of all that you see in the natural world—your body made of water and carbon, same as the flower stalks. Gardens remind us that everything is connected, and that “everything” includes us. I loved the close knit community in the suburbs, but I'm a nature girl at heart, more of a country girl and I'm glad I got to develop a stronger love of nature.  Me too! Even when we lived on Long Island, we had a tiny postage stamp backyard, and most of that, probably 20-30% of that backyard, we had in vegetables all along the perimeter of the yard. The title that gives her a ton of pride is: Agent of Change. Aja believes that a successful community is not made up of individuals working separately, but of individuals working collaboratively on all fronts. Through her work at Good Work Institute, she helps to unite individuals, enabling them to come together and work for the greater good.   Today we're going to talk about some of the things Good Work Institute (GWI) is doing like the creation of emerging models of organization. If that term is new to you, don’t worry we’ll get you up to speed. Also, Aja and I encourage you to explore this topic further if it piques your curiosity. We also talk about GWI’s mission towards just transition to help with a fair shift to an economy that is sustainable and equitable for all.  As usual, we turn to personal development topics, too. Because while it’s important to talk about the big topics, it is equally important to understand how and why guests, like Aja, got to where they are today.  Aja shares about her journey to establishing her own identity (becoming more than “mom”), how she learned to lean on others even though she is fiercely independent, and how she set out to stop limiting herself and her collaborations in the workplace (a.k.a. shedding her workplace armor).  We tackled so many topics in this episode! If you're curious, I encourage you to check out some of the work Aja and the team at GWI are doing.  If you think of someone that would really be down with today's guest, Aja, or some of the topics that we covered, please share it with one podcast fan you may know. By doing so, you can help grow Le vital corps Salon and help me amplify the work and influence of the women who have been guests on this podcast. Come meet Aja. Happy Spring! It's 65 degrees here in Kingston NY today. We have a few announcements today, one is that Shana is going to be taking a sabbatical from our show starting May 15th. Her career and painting work is taking off in all directions and she needs to focus in right now, however Theresa will be steering the ship so the show goes on! Our OTHER incredible news is that Theresa got engaged! I know I know! Love is in the air. Our first guest Olga Sahej, brings us a story of hope as she says "never give up on your body." She is a Russian born musician, coming to America to study, (Suny New Paltz), and because internal stress adapting into American culture developed intense arthritis from extensive piano playing. It seemed impossible to heal, until she worked with a Chinese acupuncturist and Qi Gong Master. Through working hard healing herself she learned about her relationship to music, joy, gratitude and commitment to changing her life. Her self work has now culminated into Blue Lotis Qi Gong, where she helps others move through the physical and emotional challenges of life with the help of QiGong and other healing modalities. She also runs a horse-riding camp for girls with her husband called International Riding Camp which runs from June to August, and she's holding a workshop for Women's Health QiGong at** Anahata April 13th** here in Kingston NY. Our second guest is Aki Goto. She is a Japanese experimental noise maker and multimedia artist based in the Hudson Valley NY. As she was graduating from an art college in Tokyo she was also struggling with a dissociative disorder which enriched her art but also created a distance between her and the world around her. Recently her partner was diagnosed with bone marrow cancer, despite the difficulties and sadness, she chose to listen to the cancer and what it was trying to tell them. They began to "Love Cancer" with its message to slow down. With her "Shirotento Orchestra" (meaning white tent)  she created an event for our Gender-Queer community based on how Japan recognizes gender. In Japan, girl's day is on 3/3 and boy's day on 5/5 — so she decided to create Genderqueer's Day right between those days and celebrate their beauty, creativity, and power. The event is at the Old Dutch Church this Friday at 6pm!  The theme is called Genderqueer's Day and the event details can be found  HERE! SELF CARE! Self care we talked about the healing nature of herbs and flower essences, something that Aki does from wild flowers found on her land. Perfect timing as next week we share our interview with Lauren Giambrone of the Good Fight Herb Co. and Wildgather Herb School. Today's show was engineered by Manuel Blas of Radio Kingston, www.radiokingston.org. The Ever Curious Gardener: Using a Little Natural Science for a Much Better Garden (https://amzn.to/2PZ1k5m) I grew up on Long Island, just got back from New York, but IDK if I have ever been there. I talked at a guy Aiden who is a manager at Young’s Farm and Larry Tse who runs a farm for Dig Inn which is also in the Hudson Valley. It is July 11, 2018 and I have a guest who’s books have been recommended a number of times on the show. Tell us a little about yourself. I did not grow up in agriculture a long time ago I was in college and grad school in Chemistry, then i dropped out of grad school in Chemistry and I moved to Vermont for a year to figure out what I was gonna do and I got really into reading about gardening. After a year of not doing much in VT I went to grad school in Ag at the U Wisconsin.  I dove into gardening intensively, I was learning a lot, because I didn’t know anything! I was learning a lot about soil science especially, because that’s what I was in grad school in and after few years I got a degree in horticulture too. Still gardening crazily. access to a good agriculture library so I would read everything I could find besides doing it. I worked for the Soil Conservation Services which is now called the Natural Resource Conservation. Went back to school and got my Doctorate in Horticulture with a specialty in fruit crops. I worked for Cornell for a while, when that job ended I went off on my own lecturing and writing and consulting. The whole time I did garden like a maniac, I still do, it hasn’t lost  it’s appeal. I still love it! One other addition when I moved to NY to work for Cornell so I planted 3/4 acre fruit trees The Farmden field another 2 acres south of my property. A little over 2 acres. Instead of planting 2 of each fruit tree I planted 20 so I could study them more. I renamed it a farmden, more then a garden a little less then a farm! Tell me about your first gardening experience was that in Grad school? When I was very very young we had a house just north of NYC We had a house with a small vegetable garden, it was planted by the swing set. I wasn’t that into the garden, I liked eating from the garden. I remember my father giving me this shovel and said, turn over the soil here. It was taller then me, I remember trying to put the shovel in the ground, it was like a rock, it was a stiff clay soil.  It’s tough when you have that kind of soil, Mike was just telling me the other day don’t dig there, don’t you see all those rocks.  (https://amzn.to/2MLEYXe) (https://amzn.to/2MLEYXe) a bold title the publisher made up, I always say it’s not Weedless, it’s Weed Less gardening, the main theme, that I practiced is  no till My garden soil has not been dug for many years partially studying soil science goes back to trying to shovel in the ground when I was a little kid.  You did all this school, started writing, gardening the whole time, so I guess one big questions I have is that at school you don’t always learn the organic way, and how did you learn the No-Till thing? Not in school, as a matter of fact, it was kind of mentioned disparagingly,  if at all… definitely didn’t each organic sort of learning basic soil science basic soil science isn’t organic or not organic, it’s just basic soil science and can be applied organically or not organically but I used it from the organic perspective Now most of the land grant colleges have come around to noting the benefits of organic guarding learning the basics. I like to learn from books and trying things out in the field. I was trying things out reading a lot and gardening a lot I feel lucky to have that opportunity to have access to all that literature and have a garden.  classroom access to have a classroom could not live anywhere Support this podcast

The other day Mike was scrolling through his Facebook feed and said, hey wifey, check this out, you’re gonna want to interview this guy! And I contacted him and here we are. It’s a little bit different because we are not going to talk about gardening but I think listeners will maybe want to live in one of these houses… Way back  in the early 90s I had a little hemp business, I made backpacks and clothes and everything out of hemp fabric on my treadle sewing machine but I knew nothing about business so it ended up fading away… Tell us a little about yourself. After about 8-9 years ago, after Hurricane Katrina, people were first displaced by Katrina and then were living in these toxic environments, toxic trailers for years! I said to myself, there’s really something terribly wrong about this, and something else has to be done. At the time I was doing something else for a living. That just got something under my skin, and then a few years later when the houses in Haiti were what fell down on people and killed them because their homes were made out of concrete, I said I have to do something about this! I said where can we find a sustainable, healthy, non-toxic material for housing that’s not gonna kill people? That’s actually gonna be good for people’s heath and good for the economy in Haiti was in terrible shape. Then I started looking in the third world generally and seeing how poorly their economies were doing. One of the amazing things is when you look at Haiti, this is an island is made out of limestone, and there are no cement plants in the country of Haiti, so they were  importing cement from the multi-national companies and they paying more for cement in Haiti then in the SouthEast US and their houses collapsed on them during the earthquake. So I tried for a few years to do things in the third world, I had a project in Mali in West Artful, ended with coups, and change in government. The people who were involved in the project were forced to leave. We needed up in a situation where I said what am I gonna do about this? I believe in this material. What I had seen in Europe, really nice buildings, carbon sequestering non-toxic some of them were really beautiful a couple of homes built in NC, hemp is not legal to grow in the US. Industrial hemp which has virtually no thc, is still considered to be a schedule one controlled substance in the US. I started looking as cannabis started becoming legal, it was sort of the tail wagging the dog, hemp started to move towards legalization. In 2013, the farm bill, did allow research and pilot programs to begin, it was  signed in Feb 2014, by President Obama (http://www.ncsl.org/research/agriculture-and-rural-development/state-industrial-hemp-statutes.aspx) . Almost 30 states have passed laws legalizing industrial hemp, we think it will be pretty soon we will be able to grow industrial hemp. The hemp has a whole lot of different applications, besides the inner woody core for building products. You know this because you were using the fiber to make the products back in the nineties. Hemp Products and Uses building products a bio-plastic can replace petroleum in plastics textiles – hemp and hemp blend fabric to replace synthetic materials and cotton animal bedding also used in pulp and paper the  first American flag...
