In Ryan's movie, the underlying storyline is family and the relationships or lack there of that can last a lifetime. Tina discusses her family dynamics and hopes that she has when she is older with a potential family of her own. As for Tina, her movie surrounded friendship and the value it can have in all people involved. How To Go From Top Performer To Excellent Leader

The Future of Work With Jacob Morgan

Ryan Hawk is the host of one of the most popular management and leadership podcasts in the world called, The Learning Leader Show. The show was chosen by Apple Podcasts as an “all time bestseller” in 2020 and it has received acclaim from Forbes and Inc. Magazine. He is also the author of Welcome to Management: How to Grow From Top Performer to Excellent Leader. It was named one of the 100 Best Management books of all time by Book Authority and it was named the best leadership book of 2020 by Forbes. ________________________________________________________________ Contrary to popular belief, top performers do not always make the best leaders. At the beginning of his career Ryan was in sales making cold calls for LexisNexis, and he was very successful at it. Because he was a top performer he was promoted several times and ultimately he moved to a sister company and became the VP of North America. Over his time as a leader he learned a lot and was able to gain the skills needed to lead, but thinking back to his first management role, Ryan says he wasn’t prepared for it. Being a top performer does not mean that you are a great leader. But so many companies still rely on this benchmark alone when promoting people to leadership roles. As Ryan shares, “the funny part about it is there's very little of what you did as an individual contributor that actually translates to you being a good coach or manager of a team of others doing that. The skill sets are just completely different. And I understand why you look towards the top performer because basically the thought process is well, they were really good, so they probably have earned some respect from their peers. Let's elevate them and then tell them okay, tell everybody else exactly what you did so that you can create a bunch of clones essentially. So I get that that's why it happens. However, there are a lot of superstar performers that are horrible coaches.” Ryan was able to learn from hands on experience and ultimately he decided to create his own sort of leadership PhD in the form of one on one conversations with leaders from all walks of life. This turned into his podcast, The Learning Leader, which he still hosts today. He interviews CEOs, athletes, authors, professors, and many others who have experience in leadership in order to help listeners continuously learn, grow, and improve. The difference between a top performer and a leader Most of us have had a teacher at some point in our lives who was extremely smart and knew their subject very well, but had a hard time teaching it to others. They make what they do look easy, but as soon as someone has a question they struggle to help that person truly understand. As Ryan shares this happens in sports too. Superstar players like Magic Johnson or Michael Jordan are put in coaching roles and while they are amazing players, they are not great coaches. “I think the same happens in the sales world. The same happens in all the business world where you're just grabbing the top performer, without actually fully checking, can they coach others who aren't as talented as them? Can they help other people who aren't naturally as good as them? And that's the problem, is sometimes we elevate and promote people who are just not good teachers, not good coaches, and a big element of management, of leading a team is teaching and coaching other people to levels that they didn't even realize they were capable of reaching.” Organizations need to look at other qualities for potential leaders aside from generating the most money or bringing in the most clients. They also need to invest more in training future leaders to make sure any individual who is being promoted has the skills necessary to lead. Based on surveys I conducted for my recent book, The Future Leader, on average people are moving into their first leadership role in their mid to late 20s, but leaders say that on average the first time they receive formal leadership training is somewhere in their late 30s or early 40s. That’s a huge gap of time that people are leading without any kind of formal training. How to solve the leadership problem As Ryan shares, it is important that we realize that attaining a leadership role is not the only sign of success in someone’s career. Not everyone wants to be a leader, and not everyone is cut out to be a leader. There are other paths people can take in their career that will allow them to be successful without leading others. It is up to organizations to create multiple career paths for employees. People need to feel like they can continue to be an individual contributor while also being able to grow and thrive in that role. Management roles should not be the only way to move up and grow inside an organization. “I think it's good to have both sets of people or a wide variety of people. I love having people on my team that I know, they're never going to be a manager and that's completely fine. They're going to crush it here. Let's just do everything we can to support them to make sure they're feeling growth to take care of them. As well as there's the other group that maybe they really want to be a manager and they have some of that innate skill and talent that let's let's work with them to get better and better, so when it comes time for them to run a team, they're in a better position than I was when I got promoted cold.” What Ryan looks for in a great leader Ryan believes great leaders are fulfilled by teaching and coaching other people. They genuinely enjoy helping others grow and improve. They are selfless people who put others before themselves. People who get focused on an end goal and set out to achieve it no matter what with the mindset of “nobody’s going to get in my way”, aren’t in a place to be a successful leader. Leaders care more about people than the end goal. Great leaders value diverse thinking and differing points of view and they are able to put themselves in other people’s shoes. They have patience and a willingness to learn. They embrace curiosity and they are comfortable admitting they don’t know everything--they’re not afraid to ask for help. They are both respected and liked. Why you must start by leading yourself In Ryan’s book, Welcome to Management, he points out that before you can lead a team, you must learn how to lead yourself. We’ve all heard the phrase that is used on airplanes when they say you must secure your oxygen mask before assisting others, and that is the same concept here. It is important to look inward first and figure out what you need to do to put yourself in the best position to lead a team who actually wants to follow you. In Ryan’s case he wanted to become a learning machine so that his team would see him as someone who was constantly striving to get better. So he built a four part framework for himself to figure out what it actually means to be a learning machine and how to actively live it out on a daily basis. His four part framework consists of: 1. Learn: He is constantly reading articles and books, interviewing different leaders, listening to podcasts and finding new information and great ideas. 2. Test: When he finds a great idea he then tests it out to see if actually works 3. Reflect: After he tests an idea out he looks back on the process and the results to see how it went and to decide if he should keep going with it or let it go. 4. Teach: Teaching is a great way to reinforce new things. Ryan shares his experience with others in order to solidify what he has taken in and tested out. To give a picture of what this process looks like in real life Ryan shares an example of how this could be used for something learned in an article. Perhaps you find an HBR article on how to run better meetings. So you’ve read the article and you’ve thought about how you could use this with your own team. And you’ve brought the idea to a mentor or someone who has led teams before to run the idea past them for their feedback. Instead of just soaking in the information and thinking about it, you need to test it. So in your next meeting you try out the ideas from the article and you invite your mentor to sit in on the meeting to see how it goes. After the meeting is done you meet with your mentor or with people who were in the meeting that you trust and who will be honest with you to get their feedback on how it went. You all reflect on how it went, what worked and what didn’t. Should you keep using it or scrap it? Then you teach the idea to someone. It could be someone you are mentoring or someone in your company who is thinking of moving into a leadership role. You sit down with that person and explain the idea you learned, how you used it in your meeting, and what worked well and what didn’t. “Before you know it, you've been in all four quadrants in one day, or maybe a few days, whatever it may be of saying this is how to….and you do that for basically everything within your career, or everything in your life, of always striving to fuel the intake engine, run experiments based on what you learned, reflect on how it went--what to keep doing what to stop-- and then sharing with other people. And it just goes on and on and on and never stops. And then once you pause at the end of the year, if you're regularly behaving on it, wow look at everything we've done over the course of the year, we've changed a lot. Because you're in this constant state of being a learning machine. And that's how I think you can regularly figure out new and better ways to do things.”

In this inspiring episode we interview Ryan Berman. Ryan has worked with some of the most influential companies in the world. He has spent the last decade and a half growing his own creative business, but in 2019, he actually fired himself from his last agency to start Courageous, a change consultancy that develops Courage Brands and trains companies how to operationalise courage through Courage Bootcamp. He is also the author of the best selling book Return on Courage, a business playbook for change.  In this episode, we get to know more about Ryan's definition of courage, his journey to understanding and deconstructing courage, some ideas on how leaders can build courage, our biology behind fear, and about his book ‘Return on Courage'. Episode Highlights: Ryan's definition of courage "I think the world doesn't care if you've worked on something for a thousand hours or two hours. They don't see that. They just see the final product and you're not there to defend your work." Ryan shared how he started with the concept of building and leading courage brands, and the beginning of his book, Return to Courage. "Knowledge plus faith plus action equals courage." Ryan further explains how these three, knowledge, faith, and action, need to be present all together for a decision to be a courageous move.  Some ideas on how leaders can build courage "What the experts basically suggest is that society is 95% freeze or flight, 5% fight. So this is not a business problem only. This is a people problem" In Ryan's quest of deconstructing courage, he basically delved into our biology and our central nervous system. He further discusses that we have never been trained to develop what he calls our central courage system.  According to Ryan's 'brain sherpa', Nicholas Alp, our brain is like a reverse onion with layers that are building on top of each other. Our sad, terrible experiences from when we are young up to present build up like layers, and our behavior has to go through all their layers or fear filters. Ryan comes up with strategies to reprogram the brain, develop the central courage system, and equips his clients with enough knowledge to lead and take action on the big things they want to do. Courage can't be taught... Ryan explains why this is a myth. He also gave examples from two different professions that showed how courage can be taught. The four attributes that Ryan values himself and for the clients he will work with, in the exact order, are Playfulness, Creativity, Courage, and Excellence. If anybody wants a Free Core Values Assessment, message Ryan at ryanberman@couragebrands.com.  "To live a fulfilling life, you actually have to not only know your values but live your values. And it starts with being able to identify them." Ryan, in his book, wrote the 'Courage Credo' and in it he said that courage is a team sport.. "Courage is a journey word." "I like the word believership. I think the sole goal of the believership is to make believers in all directions. I make believers out of your staff, make believers out of your board (if you're a public company), make believers out of consumers." Jan and Michelle quickly share their thoughts on leadership, that we are all leaders in some shape and form and that creates a high-performing team. Ryan tells us more what he is working on right now, including the new Courageous podcast. "Wherever change is needed is where courage is needed." "I think there's so many great stories of courage and there're so many people that are stuck. So if I can help people get unstuck even just a little bit then that's my purpose. And I feel like I'm on the right path." After some tumultuous activity, the Kerrigan Index settled down for the month of June. The index was up five percent that month, which means a year over year decrease of eight percent. However, most of the lost ground for March is steadily being made up for. Today, Bridget Fitzpatrick and Ryan Kerrigan, Managing Director of Kerrigan Advisors, discuss these and many other key data insights as they present the Kerrigan Advisors Market Update. According to Ryan, the S&P 500 Index is doing a little better. Year over year, the S&P is down only four percent. This is due in part to the perceived economic sensitivity since vehicles are often a very large purchase for consumers. With that being said, many dealers are reporting strong, even record numbers for May and June. This strong demand for vehicles is actually causing some inventory shortages due to plant closures. Imports are currently set up to deal with this sharp increase in demand, but some of the domestic brands are finding it more difficult. This means dealers are doubling on used vehicles even going so far as to report 2:1 used to new sales ratios. Now, dealers are making their profits on gross, not volume. Interestingly, the Kerrigan Advisors have not seen a big change in Blue Sky values. While the pandemic certainly ushered in a new set of challenges, it also highlighted how flexible the dealership model really is. As for valuations, Kerrigan Advisors is categorizing the pandemic as a one-time event. In Ryan’s words, the past few months are not an accurate indicator of where the business is going. https://www.cbtnews.com/june-kerrigan-report-retail-automotive-bounces-back-strong/

Find Your Running Calling Finding your calling in life is wonderful. When you have a burning inside you that powers your actions, no amount of adversity can stop or discourage you. You know why you do what you do, and your success and fulfillment don’t stem from the results of your effort, they come from your effort alone. For some people, a life calling comes naturally, often at a very young age. For others, it takes years of searching and work till they discover what makes them excited to jump out of bed each morning. Us runners? We also all have a running calling. Something that fuels our reason for running. A natural ability, an appreciation for the body, a desire to stay healthy, or an aspiration to break records can all be reasons to run. Maybe you are battling cancer, maybe you lost someone to cancer, maybe you run simply to work off some stress. Whatever it is, it’s yours. Today we interviewed Ryan Hall on the Running for Real podcast. Ryan holds the record for the U.S. half marathon and once completed seven marathons, on all seven continents, in seven days. Yes, you read that correctly. Ryan knows how it feels to find a calling in life and in running. Listen or read along to see what you can learn about your calling and how that can propel you to do great things. Learn About Yourself Learning about yourself is a funny concept. We are the only people we are around 24/7, and yet often times, coaches, parents, or mentors know things about us we don’t know about ourselves. For Ryan, learning about himself helped him to know that running was something he wanted to do from the first time he went on a run. It can be difficult to decide which interests are life callings, and which are just interests. Knowing when to give something up or when to work through difficulty takes practice. Ryan says, “The more you know yourself, the easier it is to act on these different ideas or inspirations.” Take time to explore a variety of ideas and ponder which ones speak to your heart. Also take time to think about why you run. When you think back to the first time you ran, or the first run you enjoyed, was there something bigger attached to that run? Something that you can always lean on when your next run seems pointless or too hard? Finding a deeper meaning will help you stay strong and committed. Listen to Your Body Learning about your body can be as important as learning about yourself. A healthy body will allow you to perform to the best of your ability. Whether you are working to solve a social issue, running your own business, or training for your hometown 10K, it is important to listen to your body. Ryan gives two suggestions from having been a professional athlete when it comes to listening to your body. The first is rest. Make sure to prioritize rest. The only way to perform at a high level is to push yourself and then allow your body to adapt to that level. Adaptation cannot come without proper rest. Again, make it a priority. Another critical aspect of body performance is proper fueling. Especially in the long-distance realm, getting down to a certain weight is a popular way to try to conserve energy. Avoid this trend. Your body knows best, and whatever weight it settles at, be comfortable with it. Focus on your performance, eat when you are hungry, and your body will figure out the optimal weight for you. Be like Bamboo There will be times when life throws you a curveball. Unexpected events are normal, so don’t let them take you off your path. “You want to be like Bamboo,” says Ryan referencing an ancient Samurai adage, “You bend but you don’t break.” Set goals for yourself, but be flexible. If you accept that there are many ways to reach your objectives, then you won’t be disturbed by changes you may need to make. Ryan was on a trajectory to become a great baseball player when he found running. Now that his professional running career is over, he has taken up weight lifting. With each transition Ryan finds a common thread that connects his current focus to his personality. For him, it’s all about taking on a new challenge. What is it for you? Praise Others Last of all, wherever you find yourself on your journey, it is important to praise others. As you do so you will find support from others, and the temptation to compare your journey to theirs will fade away. We are all on this journey together. Running can be a very individual sport, but it’s much more enjoyable when you have friends, teammates, coaches, and even competitors that you can share this experience with. We may all have different running callings, but we all have one. Welcome back Lets Talk listeners! Even I didn't know what a Global Service Supply Chain Partner was until I met Ryan, so what is it anyway? You will have to tune into the episode to find out but what I can tell you is that it not only manages the most complex parts of a supply chain but it can also be compared to Football. In Ryan's most recent Linkedin article, he says "Just like a football team, service supply chain and service delivery requires the following to achieve the highest levels of success: planning, strong leadership, impeccable timing and precise execution." Join me in this episode as I interview Ryan Miller, Vice President of Global Marketing with Flash Global. You will learn about end to end supply chain, which industries truly need a global service partner, what it means to have a 911 environment, the benefits or ROI of working with a global service supply chain partner and how communication is the key to everything.

Sometimes we think our path in life is already pretty well optimized but then something comes along to challenge that belief.  In Ryan’s case, that challenge was confronting the fact that he was an alcoholic and an addict and I suppose that’s what made me consider this one so carefully as not everybody is going to identify with his particular experience. The thing is, the great thing, about this story, is that no matter where we are on our own journey, we can relate to Ryan’s story on some level.  By even seeking to optimize for awesomeness in life, we implicitly acknowledge that we can always continue to grow and we take responsibility for that growth.  We empower ourselves to look for areas of our lives that can be made better by owning our situation, making new decisions, changing our outlook or building new habits. Ryan is a lucky guy – he had the presence of mind to accept the help when it was offered to him.  Life was teaching him a hard lesson, but luckily he was present in class that day and paying attention to what he needed to learn.

Episode #22: Getting Compliant With Your Social Media We’ve covered the importance of social media in previous episodes and know that we simply need to be on social. However, sometimes we can get nervous about compliance. Our special guest for Mortgage Marketing Radio this week is Ryan Bell. Ryan is the Chairman, Chief Product Officer and Chief Technology Officer of Gremln Social, a platform which deals with social media compliance. Gremln offers all of the brand monitoring, analytics and scheduling features of other software, but in a compliant manner. In Ryan’s words, they’re a “social media marketing suite, wrapped in a security blanket.” What’s more, you can have an existing library of resources, pre-approved by compliance, that are ready to share across your social channels. In fact, Gremln Social has been so well received, that they’ve been endorsed by the American Bankers Association. Gremln’s number one focus is providing the tools to help you streamline your social media marketing needs, save you time & money and make you a more effective marketer. In this interview, we chat about the business aspects of social media compliance in the mortgage industry. In other words, how to be engaged and active on social media in a compliant way. Ryan Holiday witnessed, first hand, the destructive force of ego when his boss and mentor unraveled from leadership at American Apparel – destroying his company and reputation. Throughout history, leaders have wrestled with the nature of their own egos – most of all in the spoils of success. In Ryan’s book, Ego is the Enemy, he takes us along a journey of mythology, history, and leadership to reveal the greatest challenge to our own success – we are the potential chaos to our own story. I loved this book – Ego is the Enemy, releases June 14th. His strategies are used as case studies by Twitter, YouTube and Google and have been written about in AdAge, the New York Times, Gawker and Fast Company. He’s advised many bestselling authors and multi-platinum musicians and became the Director of Marketing at American Apparel, where his work in advertising was internationally known. On this show we talk about ambition, the power of humility, and accepting the possibility of plain ol’ dumb luck. In This Episode, You’ll Discover: Wrestling with wanting to accomplish great things and stay small The paradox misery and motivation… only to perpetuate more disappointment How humility and self-awareness actually helped historic leaders do amazing things How our positive and negative influences affects us and why we should watched both sides How can someone be the best at what they do but not feel that they are special or better than everyone else? If you enjoyed hearing Ryan Michler on the show, please don’t hesitate to send me a note on Twitter or email me. Episode edited by the great J Scott Donnell Bio From OrderOfMan.com (In Ryan’s Words) Most of my childhood was spent without a permanent father figure in my life. I never learned how to work on my car, I never had the chance to roughhouse with my dad, and I didn’t even learn how to throw a baseball correctly until I was a freshman in high school. Looking back on it now, I wonder how my life would have been different if I had a permanent male influence in my life. What would the world look like if there were more men in it? I’m not talking about males. I’m talking about MEN (there is a difference). Now that I have sons, I’m committed to being the dad that I never had. We do all kinds of great things together-sports (I coach ALL their teams), build tree houses, and roughhouse ’til we’re exhausted. As I talk with other men, I can see that there is a huge need for learning how to be a better father. But I’ve also seen a need for strong and honorable men outside of the home. Guys, we’re losing the meaning of manhood. We’ve gone away from being strong, rugged, independent, and tough to a collection of wimpy, dependent, whiners. Something has got to be done!
