CityDAO Podcast | A Community-Governed Crypto City of the Future
Scott Fitsimones is the Founder of CityDAO and the Co-Founder and CTO of AirGarage. His previous working experiences include being a Production Engineering Intern at Facebook, Software Engineering Intern at CERN, and iOS Engineer at MobilBytes. Today, he is putting land on-chain at CityDAO and building better cities at AirGarage. Usually, Scott writes about cities, crypto, and mechanism design. He also believes in building things you want to exist and writes about the things you want to change. CityDAO is building a network of assets on-chain, starting with a single parcel of land in Wyoming. Each parcel of land is an NFT that can be owned collectively by the DAO or by individuals. It is a DAO, or Decentralized Autonomous Organization, meaning it is managed by the community. It is also a DAO for decentralized asset ownership. Key Points from the Interview: “CityDAO is aiming to decentralize ownership of land and assets, and so I think there's a trend here, which is, these assets formerly only accessible to the wealthiest Americans, and now they're being democratized through these DAOs that are coming together to own them collectively.” “One of my core motivating beliefs is that mechanism design can make the world better.” --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/city-dao-podcast/message

She has worked as an IOS Engineer for LinkedIn, an IOS developer for Vimeo, been a translator for the United Nations, founded an independent educational project that welcomes volunteers from all over the world to teach at the rural schools in Russian Siberia, taught intensive Russian language course to college students in Malaysia, wrote for Look-At Media, and has traveled to Germany, Russia, Mongolia, China, Viet Nam, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, and Laos She is a co-founder and a developer of Neverlate, a self-improvement iOS app for people who are often late. She was selected one of 30, out of 620, applicants to become an iOS Fellow at the Access Code, an intensive, project based iOS Mobile App Development program in New York City. During her time at Access Code, she worked with leading iOS engineers from Google, Yahoo, Artsy, and Betaworks. Ayuna is a co-organizer of the iOSoho meetup, the largest iOS meetup in NYC. She also founded the Women in iOS meetup. the only NYC meetup focused on highlighting the work female iOS developers do in the industry. In her free time, she volunteers with Coder Dojo and helps kids learn the basics of HTML & CSS, and with Women Who Code where she helps beginner programmers and provides mentorship to women looking to enter the tech field. Today's episode was made possible by a partnership with the Mt. Adams High School STEM/CTE program and and the Microsoft TEALS program. The TEALS program is designed to help high schools build and grow sustainable computer science (CS) programs. They pair volunteer CS professionals across the US with classroom teachers looking to make a lasting impact in their students' lives. TEALS volunteers help shape students' futures and career opportunities by providing them with computational knowledge and skills they wouldn't otherwise have access to.
Taylor Daugherty went from teacher to customer success intern, to sales associate to senior iOS Engineer. She reached her career sweet spot by taking risks and truly understanding her strengths and the type of work that brought her joy. Hear her story and the fun Taylor and host Carrie Conover had together during their time working at eSpark learning on this episode of Classroom to Boardroom. In this episode of Origin Stories I speak with Jane Chung, iOS Engineer @ Calm. This was a really fun episode because I've known Jane for a long time now, as she was my partner throughout the iOS Development bootcamp we did back in 2015. It was fun to look back on the app we built together during that bootcamp. Jane then moved on to be one of the fist full-time mobile engineers at Coinbase where she converted the app from Objective-C to Swift and rode the crazy crypto wave of 2017 all the way to Coinbase being the #1 app in the App Store for a period of time. Lots of war stories there... After leaving the crypto space, Jane is getting ready to embark on her next chapter as an iOS Engineer at Calm. This episode is a little different. A joint experiment. A nebulous mission. In this inspiring international discussion, I was honored to be joined by two co-hosts: Dawna Jones of Vancouver and Gert Penne of Belgium. And three guests: Willow Bumby and Lindsey Henwood of Vancouver, and Josh Shaffer of Tampa. With 6+ participants, spanning 3+ countries, 3 continents, and 3 generations we explored not only the future of work, but also the future of education. Dawna Jones is the AUTHOR of DECISION-MAKING for DUMMIES. Her book appears on Steve Denning's (Forbes) list of 8 Noteworthy Books for 2014. Dawna is also the host of the “Evolutionary Provocateur” podcast. Gert Penne, an account executive in the tech industry, is a an Empathic Problem Solver, who takes a principle-centered approach to teaming across cultures, disciplines, and generations. At the end of a 2-continent, 3-country Skype call, Dawna, Gert, and I found ourselves talking about generational differences globally. With the goal to learn how the next generation sees the Future of Work, we decided to invite 3 Millennials to a follow-up call. This show is that call. Millennials fall just after the Gen-Xers. They were born between 1982 and 2004. We were fortunate to have 3 Millennials join us. Josh Shaffer is an early Millennial, and works for Accenture in Talent Acquisition in Tampa. Willow Bumby is an iOS Engineer, designer, and writer, as well as a teacher at Lighthouse Labs in Vancouver. Lindsay Henwood is a User Experience Design Instructor at Red Academy, a rapidly growing Tech School startup in Vancouver. Two other Millennials joined us virtually. Lauren Kirmil is a Marketing and Media Specialist and a former technical recruiter in the San Francisco Bay Area. During her extensive travels throughout Southeast Asia she worked as a freelance travel writer. Grace Liu is a former Outreach Support Officer at the British Consulate in Guangzhou, China. She recently received funding to start a venture in Shenzhen. With the assistance of her NYU professor she also plans to start an NGO incorporating ancient contemplative practices, including meditation. In this discussion we covered a wide range of topics. Distributed workforces and workplace flexibility and the big American offensive to change the workplace. Self-responsibility, self-awareness, self-perception. Cultural fit: the “techie” mold and the pressure to fit in. The dying days of the industrial model, the irrelevant university degree and the rise of bootcamp style education. The need to understand the next generation, and the companies which will die. The rise of the robots and the growing fear of job loss. Capitalism and its schizophrenic booms and busts: do we want an economy based on self-interest or creativity and collaboration? Tribalism and the need to belong: do we become global citizens or nationalists? Surviving the industrial model and designing the new workplace. The need to shift easily into different industries and the costly risk in over-specialization. The silliness of our current system and people's inability to work with power. And the power coming from the “Millennial values”.

"People will tell you you can't do it, but if you want it enough and work hard enough, you can be successful and have what you want." - Amber Reyngoudt About: Amber Reyngoudt- Co-Founder of Skull Ninja, and former iOS Engineer at Milk Overview: Amber is a Software Engineer with years of experience in the coding field. Over the past four years, she has taken on her own venture of building iPhone apps with her co-founder at Skull Ninja, and shares with us what it's been like traveling the entrepreneurial road. Highlights: Background: Amber attended school at University of Florida, and majored in Computer Science. Although she hadn't planned on becoming a software engineer, Amber's grandmother really encouraged her to go into Computer Science, and as a Junior in college was interning as a coder. When she graduated school, she worked as an application developer for Intel for about four years. She then moved to LA and eventually began working for a consulting firm. Once she left consulting, Amber attempted to start her own company but soon ran out of money and decided to go back to the mainstream work space. In 2005, MySpace was the hot new social media company so Amber decided to apply and started working as a developer there. She ended up becoming a manger and worked there until 2010. At that point, things started dying down with MySpace and Amber was no longer feeling challenged or fulfilled in her position so she slowly left MySpace to develop apps for iPhones on her own. From there, Skull Ninja was born. Working at Milk: After leaving MySpace, Amber and her co-founder moved to San Francisco and began working on apps. Amber was fortunate to meet Kevin Rose 4 months after moving there and he asked Amber and her co-founder to come work at his new-found company, Milk. For the next year, Amber and her co-founder worked as the iOS Engineers for Milk, which helped build credibility for the two of them. Milk was eventually bought out by Google in 2011, so Amber and her co-founder were back to focusing on their company, Skull Ninja. Skull Ninja: Amber and her co-founder are doing a mix of consulting and building apps. Recently, they did some webwork for AirB&B, intro for About.me, created another app for North Technologies, they also created an iPhone, and iPad app for a home hair-color company, etc. In 2012, they created their own platform for shopping in a variety of ways, and soft launched an iPhone app called Hit or Miss that focuses on women's fashion, and discovering fashion. Essentially, they publish a daily trend and the consumers select that trend as a hit or miss, and then they tailor what they want to see according to the feedback. So far the app has been well received. Challenges: For Skull Ninja, bootstrapping was difficult along with balancing their schedules and time. It's been easy to take on too much, and not even work on their own projects to help the company. For the past few years, it's only been Amber and Dave and they were not able to really scale the company until they bring on employees. Woman in Tech: One thing Amber points out is that she's had to spend some time proving herself, but is becoming less of a problem since she has built credibility. She does feel that because she is a female founder, it can work to her advantage and make her stand out from the crowd. Amber shares that she's happy there are more women in tech, and in different areas, they bring a lot to the tech world. Overall, Amber has had a good experience and feels very fortunate. Advice for Entrepreneurs: It may seem scary and unattainable, but if you're driven, passionate, and willing to work really hard- almost to the point of crazy- you can be successful and have what you want.
