Nicole says that when it comes to Desert Oracle, “There's something here that kind of harkens back to what the arts and crafts movement was. In the industrial revolution, you know, this idea of kind of going back to this craft, this artisanal, this very human, this very lo-fi way of doing things. And ironically enough, I think there's a real space for that, even in these digital channels.”Buck convention. Feeling disillusioned with the mainstream take on building an audience? Ken Layne grows his audience by creating niche, tangible content with a strong sense of place and it has garnered a dedicated following. In 2024, 44% of Spotify listeners were new to the Desert Oracle podcast, and it ranked among the top 5 or top 10 podcasts for 5,000 listeners. Nicole says, “ [Ken Layne] is actively rejecting conventional wisdom about how you build an audience. And yet that is absolutely part of what is making him successful at doing it. And it's almost like the extent to which I think of Patagonia a lot of times in this kind of context, where Patagonia is telling you, like, use the stuff you already have. And that somehow is part of what makes you want to keep going back to Patagonia. This is what makes people so loyal to Patagonia is the bigger mission. And like weirdly telling people not to buy it somehow is what makes them want to go and buy more, which is sort of, but not actually their intent.”Take a distinct perspective. What is the story that is unique to you? That's the story you want to tell. Nicole says, “ That distinctiveness in that perspective and that point of view, I think that's something that really effective brands gravitate toward anyway. They're good at it consciously and sometimes unconsciously as well. And I think B2B marketing needs more of that. You know, where what we offer our customers, regardless of what we're selling is typically not generic stuff. So why should our marketing sound like generic stuff? And yet a whole hell of a lot of it does. For a long time, we've been in a world where there's a tremendous volume of noise and the kinds of things that get cut through are things like Ken Layne's curmudgeonly, somewhat dismissive and yet somehow totally compelling take on the world. That's what draws people in."Curate an experience. Ken Layne curates an experience that captures the mystical nature of Joshua Tree and the greater Mojave Desert. And he does it by appealing to the senses - more than just the sight that digital content requires. You hear the voices of the desert through his podcast and radio show. You can hold an artifact of the desert: the Desert Oracle zine. His multimedia approach creates a world unique to Desert Oracle. And you get the inside scoop. Nicole says, “ There is a very specific point of view, it is Ken Layne's point of view. But he also brings in a bunch of stories from other people and from other places and sometimes from other times as well.  he's curating an experience for you. And I think that is actually a really important message and takeaway here, too.  I think that  this idea of being able to explore different aspects of the story and the story world is really key.  Knowing where your audience is, but also being able to bring your audience to where you are, or where you want them to be.  Like, I have totally been brought in and then bought into the world of Desert Oracle. How I got there is almost immaterial, but like there are all these different places that I'm getting this enjoyment from, being part of that world and I feel like I have found a path that brought me in there.”*”[Desert Oracle] is not for everybody for sure, but boy, it creates an incredibly loyal and dedicated audience. Enrico here.Hey.So before we get started, Brittany, what's new?It's been crazy.I went on vacation last week, so I know I missed our previous guest.I think we had Jacob on last week, but unfortunately I had to miss that one.We went to San Antonio where it was kind of warm.It was like 80s and 90s Fahrenheit, so what, 30?A little less than 30, maybe 20, 28 Celsius.That sounds very nice.But it was overcast the whole time.So I tried to get in the pool, and it was like windy and cold.It was like still not warm enough to get in the pool there.But we came back, and it snowed yesterday for Halloween, so that was good.We have like probably three to four inches of snow outside now.Wow.Yeah, we just got our first falling snow here today.Oh, really?So it doesn't stay on the ground, though, because it's not that cold here just yet.Yeah, our ground is not that cold.I thought it would melt, but it froze overnight, and it's just like stuck there.Damn.Yeah, that doesn't sound like fun.Maybe you should just go more south.I've talked about it, yeah.We just built that pool, though, so we're like 10 years, and our kids are in school still,so 10 years, and then we'll probably keep this house for the summer when it's nice hereand then move somewhere else, be snowbirds for a while.Yeah, makes complete sense.All right, let's talk a bit more with you, Enrico.Who are you?That might be a broad question, but how did you get into development?Who am I?Yes, well, my name is Enrico Sacchetti, and I am a software developer based in the GreaterToronto area, Ontario, Canada, and what I like to do is front-end development, and eversince I was a teenager, that's what I've been doing as a personal hobby, and some opportunitiescame along, and before I knew it, it was a full-time job.So despite my post-secondary education in video game development, I actually pursueda career in website development because that's where the opportunities lay.We have had so many people that are video game developers, like by originally videogame developers on the show, right?Yeah, I feel like that's been a thing.The person that did Wolfenstein, the felt version of that?Snuffy, Jason?Yeah, and a couple of other people were in video game development.It's kind of like the music thing that we have, too.A lot of people were musicians before they were programmers, too.Yeah.That's interesting.Yeah, did you get into the game development stuff?Was that because of interest in gaming in general?Yeah, it was sort of a misguided interest in video games because as much as I enjoyedplaying them, making them is 100% different.You need ongoing, persistent passion for that, as I realized the hard way after graduating.I tried to get jobs across the world, particularly China and Canada, because I was pursuing livingthere.I actually ended up living in China for one year and became an English teacher after graduating.Oh, cool.So that's where I learned how to speak Mandarin and teach English.But even though I was teaching English...I had no idea you spoke Mandarin.Yeah, that's a thing I can do.But aside from that, I found myself on the weekends learning code, HTML, JavaScript,CSS, because that was my passion.And game development was not my passion.In fact, when I had an interview for a job, they told me to my face, "You don't have passionfor games."And I'm really glad that happened.That's rough.As rough as it sounds, I was relieved because I realized this is not for me.And I found out very early in my career.So I think that's a very good blessing.Yeah.What language was that, that you were doing the video game programming?Programming language?Yeah.In university, I learned C++.And that's what I used along with some Visual Studio stuff and frameworks.But I never had professional experience game development.I just had a couple of portfolio pieces, and I graduated with that.So I was never a game developer.I was just a student of one.And then eventually, I came back to Canada, ...

Irish-based sales performance, efficiency and planning start-up Lative has raised $3 million in seed funding led by Elkstone Ventures to automate the B2B sales planning and execution process in real-time. Lative has developed powerful and easy-to-use cloud-based sales performance, efficiency and planning software that helps B2B revenue teams monitor and improve sales performance. It allows users to understand their sales performance, cost efficiency and return on investment (ROI) with real-time risk and opportunity assessment, as well as easily simulate future capacity and investment plans with far higher accuracy than how it's currently done within organisations today. The software connects top-down revenue plans and targets to bottoms-up performance and costs, empowering companies to boost sales productivity, maximise every dollar spent, and plan with precision and purpose. Lative recognises the need for combining planning with execution within sales organisations and has built the platform to solve this need. Historically, this has been a top-down approach which Lative acknowledges is an inaccurate and inefficient method and leads to expensive mistakes. Instead, the company takes the customers' actual bottom-up data in real-time in order to build accurate capacity plans and see the impact of strategic initiatives on sales productivity and return on investment. This is not a once-off solution, but can be used consistently to monitor sales performance and efficiency as the company grows and changes. Currently, there are a growing number of companies on the platform including EnterpriseDB, Oneflow and Saleshood. Lative will continue to improve and deepen their integrations with strategic technology partners Salesforce and Snowflake, as well as continue to expand their broader integration partner ecosystem with a range of CRMs, ERPs, Finance and HR systems. With the funding, Lative intends to invest in its go-to-market strategy and further development of the platform. This funding will also enable Lative to build an integral insights and benchmarking module which will improve decision-making by sales teams. Lative was co-founded in 2022 by former colleagues Werner Schmidt (led revenue operations and sales enablement for high-growth SaaS businesses like Sage and Citrix), and Laura Tortosa Sancho (led multiple sales operations functions at Sage and was a senior consultant at Deloitte). Both founders have extensive revenue operations backgrounds and consistently struggled firsthand with the issues that Lative now solves. Werner Schmidt, CEO & co-founder of Lative said, "As economic conditions have changed in recent years, for B2B sales teams sales productivity and efficiency has gone from an afterthought to a critical success factor. Lative connects revenue plans to performance and costs in real-time so that you can focus on making the right decisions or course correct at the right times to achieve your revenue and profitability goals." Giskard, a Paris, France-based software startup specializing in artificial intelligence quality, raised €1.5 million in a funding round led by Elaia with participation from investors including Bessemer Venture Partners. I interviewed Alex Combessie, co-founder and CEO at Giskard. Alex started his career in finance and loved the data part of finance and strategic consulting. He went back to school for data science and became a software engineer and data scientist. Giskard's AI Test product allows for the building of automated tests on AI models to measure critical quality criteria, including ethics, robustness, and efficiency.
