On this episode, Shane talks with Michael S. Bar-Ron about his research project related to the Sinai inscriptions discovered throughout the Sinai Peninsula. Though these inscriptions resemble Egyptian hieroglyphs, they're actually written in what scholars refer to as “proto-Sinaitic” or “proto-Alphabetic” script. Michael Bar-Ron has been working on these inscriptions for the better part of a decade and argues that they are best treated as a form of paleo-Hebrew. According to Ex. 13:21, as the people of Israel made their way out of Egypt, we're told that Yahweh went before the people of Israel in a pillar of cloud and fire. What's odd, however, is that the next chapter tells us it was the “angel of God” who went before the host of Israel in the pillar (Ex 4:19). So, how do we explain the difference between these two passages? Did an angel lead the people out of Egypt, or was it Yahweh himself? The foundational narrative behind Christ's death, burial, and resurrection is the story of Exodus. After all, Jesus is presented in the Gospels as “the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world,” and was put to death on the eve of Passover. But what if the Israelite exodus from Egypt never really happened? Brian Vaccaro graduated from Webster University in St. Louis in 1996 with a Bachelor's Degree in Music with an emphasis in Jazz Studies. He continued his education at Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville where he earned a Master's Degree in Music in Guitar Performance in 2000. Since completing his studies, Brian has been active as an educator as well as a performer. He has taught a variety of jazz and general music courses including Jazz History, Jazz Ensemble, Guitar Ensemble, Rock History, Private Guitar Study and numerous others at Lindenwood University, Southwestern Illinois College, St. Louis Community College, Grand Center Arts Academy and St. Charles Community College. In 2010, Brian received the Outstanding Adjunct Faculty award from St. Louis Community College at Meramec. Brian is now Executive Director of the 501c3 organization "St. Louis Classical Guitar". He has also performed and recorded with many of the top musicians in the St. Louis area. "Going Through the Motions", the debut album by the Brian Vaccaro Trio, was honored to be included in the "Notable Releases of 2011" list by noted critic and author W. Royal Stokes. Brian currently performs in and around the St. Louis area.

Husband-and-wife duo, Kent and Stacey Walker, both hold MFAs in writing and team-teach Veterans Writing Workshops for Missouri Humanities. Kent was a sergeant in the 3rd Infantry Division of the Army and completed two tours in Iraq. His wife, Stacey, is a lecturer at University of Missouri-St. Louis, St. Louis Community College, and Jefferson College.In this episode, we hear about Kent's experience as a M240 gunner, the preparation of his unit leading up to the 2003 invasion into Baghdad, and the process of writing about his wartime experience. We learn from Stacey how her family inspired her to write about connection, relationships, and identity. Kent & Stacey reveal their “meet cute” and discuss how writing, storytelling, teaching, and therapy have been influential and healing parts of their relationship. In this conversation we are left with the concept of “living life one page a day.”In this segment, Kent reads his poem, "Gun Baby" and Stacey reads her poem, "Grace in War." In honor of Pi Day on March 14, this week's episode features two stories about how a particular number has impacted the live's of the storytellers. Part 1: Math teacher Theodore Chao goes all out for Pi Day at his school. Part 2: Debbie Char learns what a flash point is while cooking a meal for her date. Theodore Chao is an associate professor of mathematics education at The Ohio State University. He who loves using video and storytelling to get kids to share about how they really do math, not what someone told them they need to do. He is a former filmmaker, startup founder, and middle school teacher who now spends his time supporting teachers, writing articles, and using research funds to show that kids hold tremendous math power. Debbie Char is grateful that along with silver hair, aging has offered opportunities to do what she loves. Amy Reidel, Independent Artist, and Margaret Rieckenberg, Associate Curator for Barrett Barrera Projects stopped by to speak about the happenings at the various galleries of BBP, and specifically about the exhibition "Stretch Marks" which has been extended through November 27th. Amy Reidel is a St. Louis-based artist who has exhibited work regionally and nationally. She has been a resident artist at ACRE (Artists' Cooperative Residency and Exhibitions) based out of Chicago, the David and Julia White Artists' colony in Ciudad Colon, Costa Rica and at the Luminary Center for the Arts in St. Louis. She has exhibited work at venues including the Contemporary Art Museum-St. Louis, ACRE projects gallery in Chicago, and the Amarillo Museum of Art. Her work can be viewed online in the curated artist registries and viewing programs at White Columns and the Drawing Center in New York City. In 2014, 2019 and 2020 Reidel was awarded Artists' Support and COVID-19 relief grants from the Regional Arts Commission of St. Louis and the Washington University/Mildred Lane Kemper Art Museum. In 2016 she received the Critical Mass Creative Stimulus award. Reidel is currently a faculty member at Washington University and St. Louis Community College as well as Co-Founder of All the Art: The Visual Art Quarterly of St. Louis (2015-2020). Stretch Marks is an exhibition that highlights expressive mark-making as a means to explore the material in the maternal and the experience of having a body and therefore a mother. Representations in painting, drawing, photography, fiber, sculpture, and ceramics reveal bodies in transitional states, stretching themselves, often reaching through time toward other bodies that precede or continue their own material existence. The artists in this exhibition investigate subjects that include the experience of being a mother; our relationship to the Earth; materiality and tactility; abjection and the grotesque; portraiture and self-portraiture; domestic space; familial relationships; cultural identities; and feelings of love, horror, faith, and loss as they relate to maternal bodies. With many references to the landscape—and trees in particular—the images in these artworks allude to the longstanding conceit of nature and the Earth as a mother, as well as how we often envision family lineages as both branches of a tree and roots. Another repeating motif in the exhibition is images of hands, suggesting tactile manipulation and the presence of touch. Connecting these many images and ideas is a critical attention to generation—both as an act of creation and a form of inheritance—with works that reflect on time, family, birth, and making in their myriad incarnations. Bio Jackson's first college coaching job came as an assistant for the Fairfield Stags baseball program in 2001. The next season, Jackson became an assistant coach at Emporia State University. Jackson spent the 2003 season as an assistant at Coffeyville Community College before moving on to Jefferson College for the 2004 and 2005 seasons. Jackson coached at Nicholls State University from 2006–2007 and St. Louis Community College in 2008. Jackson left college baseball to become a professional scout for the Washington Nationals from 2008 to 2010. On August 14, 2010, Jackson was named the recruiting coordinator and assistant coach for the Missouri Tigers baseball program under coach Tim Jamieson. On May 27, 2015, Jackson left his position with Missouri because of his wife's promotion. Jackson spent his two year hiatus from coaching as an agent. On July 25, 2017, Jackson returned to coaching as the head coach of the Southern Jaguars baseball team. In 2019, Coach Jackson led the Southern Jaguars baseball team to the SWAC Baseball Tournament championship and a berth in the 2019 NCAA Baseball Tournament. Southern was eliminated after losses to the Mississippi State University Bulldogs in their first game, 11-6, and the University of Miami Hurricanes, 12-2, in the losers bracket elimination game on the following day. On November 30, 2020, Jackson resigned as head coach of the Southern Jaguars to accept a position as the President of MLB Draft League. Born in Cincinnati, OH, Dorian Brown grew up in East St. Louis, IL. As an undergraduate, he attended the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Dorian began as an engineer ended with a BA in history and a minor in mathematics. He received a Master's in History with an emphasis in African American History from Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville. He pledged Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc through the vessel of the Iota Pi Chapter. He currently is ABD in pursuit of a Ph.D. in History at Saint Louis University. His research interests include African American history and African history. Dorian served as a Professor of History at St. Louis Community College at Forest Park for 19 years before joining the African American Studies Faculty at City College of San Franciso, where he currently serves.

In her role at Yield Lab, Connie is familiar with the trends such as big data, precision farming, crop yield technology and animal health that are exciting investors while working to solve global issues related to alternative energy, hunger and environmental sustainability.
