Launch Your Box Podcast with Sarah Williams | Start, Launch, and Grow Your Subscription Box
Last week I hosted our annual Subscription Box Week and it was so so good! Part of the week features interviews with subscription box owners who have various types and sizes of businesses. This year, I interviewed 4 subscription box owners at once - all of whom have some type of bakery box. Each serves a different niche and each followed a different journey. All are SO inspiring! Lauren is the “celebrity” of the group! You might have seen her on Food Network's Christmas Cookie Challenge. Lauren went from being a mom and art teacher who loved to bake cookies to a full-time entrepreneur who designs and produces her own cookie cutters, an online and in-person cookie decorating instructor, and a successful subscription box owner. Lauren's family is her why. She wanted to grow her business to help put her two sons through college. She was proud to tell us they will both be able to graduate debt-free, thanks in large part to Lauren's subscription box business! Jonica owns a bakery and a successful subscription box business, and coaches people who want to open bakeries. In addition to serving lunch and baked goods to her local community, Jonica makes the MOST delicious treats and sends them across the country every month. Jonica has taken all the lessons she learned through her business journey - opening and closing two other bakeries - and poured them into doing things the right way. The way that serves both her customers and Jonica and her family. After leaving a successful bakery in North Carolina to move “back home” to Iowa after her husband's military retirement, Kimberly started selling her baked goods again. She was inspired by how much her former customers missed her baked goods and got creative. Jenny is not a baker, but she is a passionate advocate for the gluten-free community and served them for many years through her blog, Good For You Gluten Free. When changes in the Google algorithm had a severely negative impact on her traffic - and her income - Jenny pivoted. She turned her love for finding new gluten-free products and vendors into a subscription box. Jenny launched earlier this year and she sold out the 125 slots she had available in hours. Jenny is growing as fast as she can manage, selling out every month, and looks forward to even more growth once she moves her business out of the basement and into a space of its own. These four amazing businesswomen shared advice with people who are thinking about starting a subscription box. Their message? Just start. It doesn't have to be perfect. Serve your audience - give them what they need and what they want. Join me for this episode and get inspired by four women who turned their passion for food and serving others into successful subscription box businesses.

Launch Your Box Podcast with Sarah Williams | Start, Launch, and Grow Your Subscription Box
Imagine a box of incredibly delicious baked goods arriving on your doorstep every month. Baked goods that are the stuff of dreams… That's the experience Jonica Thompson provides to her subscribers. Carefully curated, impeccably packed and shipped, and OMG so, so good baked goods! Jonica sent me one of her boxes for a recent Box Opening inside Launch Your Box and let's just say my Warehouse team and I were in heaven. I invited Jonica to join me on the podcast to do more than just talk about mouthwatering baked goods. Rather, I wanted her to share her story and to be a source not only of inspiration but of information to you. We get a LOT of questions inside Launch Your Box about shipping perishable goods. Our interview ended up being even more fantastic than I thought it would be. Jonica shared the story of her bakery. Her current bakery is not her first attempt at starting a bakery business. And it's not her second attempt. No, Jonica faced adversity, life challenges, and self-doubt. Jonica didn't let setbacks put an end to her dreams. Instead, she kept baking and waited until the time was right. She has a thriving bakery business and now also has a growing subscription box. When it was time to add a subscription box to her business, Jonica knew she could provide an outstanding product and an outstanding experience. The one thing she didn't know was how to pack and ship her products so they would arrive fresh and undamaged. Jonica did research. A LOT of research. And she conducted tests. The kind of tests where she shipped boxes around the country using various types of packing materials. The result? A subscription box that arrives on the doorsteps of her subscribers filled with fresh, undamaged, absolutely scrumptious baked goods. If you've ever thought about including perishable items in your subscription box or if you've found yourself needing to start over, this is a can't-miss episode. Join me for this episode as Jonica takes us through her journey from self-doubt to thriving bakery and subscription box owner. “This notion that we could write without it being saturated with what it feels like to be faced – confronted – with the threat to what makes our lives possible, to think that one could write that without an emotional response, without it being saturated with emotion, is to write as if we were writing about what was happening on the moon, not here on Earth.” – Danielle Celermajer Danielle Celermajer's Summertime: Reflections on a Vanishing Future is a different kind of nature writing; it's a philosophy, elegy, meditation. In the aftermath of last year's bushfires, Danielle asks what we are losing in this shared, ravaged world. In her book Beyond Climate Grief, science reporter Jonica Newby considers what a personal, emotional, human response might be to global catastrophe. The two discuss these themes and their personal journeys of courage and hope in the face of disaster and uncertainty, with Suzanne Leal. In episode #13 we do a review of the most popular radio in prepper circles, probably for the very low cost of the radios. However, the stock "rubber duck" antenna is the cause of frustration for many who have purchased this radio. A simple antenna upgrade increases the performance of this radio greatly. Nagoya makes several which are very appropriate for this radio, but be careful, there are a lot of counterfeits out there. We'll tell you how to tell the difference in the genuine and the counterfeits.Links mentioned in the podcast:www.baofengtech.comEmail us at:info@practicalprepping.infoOur website:www.practicalprepping.infoFind us on FacebookPractical PreppingCheck out Jonica's Bakery On The Lake for some awesome Christmas goodies shipped directly to your door.See some beautiful custom monogrammed gifts, Christmas Shirts and baby items at Linden Lane Designs. Episodio 1 Filosofia Jonica by Piensa En Esto
When we talk about being a family in the LGBTQ Community we start a whole different type of conversation. Family in our community could mean two mothers and two fathers but the questions that are being asked more then not is: How Are We Having Babies? Who is Having Our Baby? How do your answer our child when they ask “Where did I come from” if you are in a same sex relationship/marriage couple? Can We Talk for REAL will be joined by expecting parents Jonica Burkhead and wife Nkenge Jazz Burkhead. They talk about their journey to parenthood was understood from the time we started dating. We discussed our desire to have children early on. After a year of marriage we decided it was time to start trying. Our first challenge was finding a clinic we trusted and were comfortable with, that was gay friendly. We prepared ourselves for homophobia or outright rejection; however we found a great clinic and doctor. Another challenge was having a million questions and neither of us personally knowing another gay couple who had been through it. Once we were in the process, we had to have many discussions about choosing a donor, like race, as many black men don't give specimens so we were limited. We then had to figure out what we valued in other areas like education, hobbies etc. the hardest part was the waiting, waiting to ovulate, waiting to test, and then waiting for baby. zLet's talk about how lesbians have babies, how gay men have babies, how the transgender couples have babies. If you would like to be an active participant in this conversation of “How Are We Having Babies” just inbox us so that can include your family in our family conversation. If you adopted your child, took legal responsibility of a family members child, used a turkey baster, a friends sperm or the sperm bank or if you had sex the old fashion way with the opposite sex let us hear from you.
