Josh Haynam is a life-long entrepreneur, having started his first company at the age of 15 and never held a full-time job outside of entrepreneurship. In June 2014 he and his co-founder started Interact a company that's all about connecting brands and customers at a human level They bootstrapped the company up to this point, and have helped more than 150,000 customers generate over 21 million leads and counting for their businesses. Their mission: to empower digital entrepreneurs, creators, and brands to grow their business through empathetic listening, deeper understanding, and true connection. And this inspired me, and hence I invited Josh to my podcast. We explore his bootstrapped journey and the critical choices he and his co-founder had to make along the journey. Josh explains how he's been able to create defensible differentiation from the start. He shares his big lessons learned to accelerate profitability. Last but not least, he explains how COVID led to a big spike in revenue, that quickly became the worst thing that could ever happen to his company - and the counterintuitive thing he's done to come out stronger. We're seeing now a lot of our competition shedding users, because they acquired them in a way that wasn't profitable. And so now they have to get rid of them. And that's just like doubly wasting money because it costs money to acquire that user. And then they're also going to be a detractor for your business. It doesn't actually work. Josh Haynam grew up in the Central Valley of California just 100 miles from the tech center of Silicon Valley--without any awareness of tech jobs or tech businesses when he lived there. He was a successful high school entrepreneur, then supported himself through his college years with his digital SEO agency. Their experiments with custom website quizzes showed promising results, so Josh and his cofounder friends started a company to build the first lead-generation online quizzes as a standalone plugin for websites. Interact quizzes showed promise with great customer value, but they struggled to sell their new solution to small business owners or marketers who had never seen quiz software before. They experimented, pivoted, and kept going for seven years before they finally reached $1 million ARR with some profits. The ups and downs continued with well-funded competitors, COVID booms and busts, target market pivots, and more. Interact now is profitable and growing with nearly $3 million in annual recurring revenues, 11 remote employees, and thousands of customers—still without any outside equity funding. Tom Poland: I just told Josh the story of about 50 years ago a guy got on a plane and I know where he's heading out from somewhere like San Francisco or L.A. or wherever. And he got on the plane he sat down and he was flying to Oakland, California and the plane took off and drinks were served and the captain came on and said you know," Welcome to flight blah blah blah. We'll be arriving in Auckland in 12 hours and 30 minutes." He said 12 hours 30 minutes instead of 20 minutes a plane flight. I have recently seen online quizzes and online assessments used as part of some amazing launches, so it will be great to learn more. Today's guest is Josh Haynam from the the online quiz platform Interact. I have been taking quizzes as long as I can remember, and they are something that everyone can and should incorporate into their business and their launch or the lead up to their launch.
