Each season we like to speak to someone from an independent bookstore, but this can be especially challenging during the December holiday shopping crush. We're very glad Amanda Zirn Hudson from Bethany Beach Books in Delaware was able to make time to speak with us. Bethany Beach Books started its own book subscription program several years ago called The Book Drop. Amanda tells us all about how she began the program and explains the process for selecting books and getting them out to members. Unlike other book subscriptions, this one is run by an independent bookstore, and the books they pick are what they consider “hidden gems.” Their program has been recommended by BuzzFeed, NPR, The New York Times, and USA Today. The good news is that you still have time to order a subscription for yourself or a book-loving friend or family member before the holidays! Cleyvis Natera took 15 years to write Neruda on the Park, and you can see why when you read the novel. There many pieces of the book that speak to Natera's life: navigating America with and on behalf of her parents, seeing gentrification slowly creep into the neighborhoods she has loved, the flawed and complex relationships between generations of women within one community. Kate had a chance to sit down with Cleyvis at the recent Brooklyn Book Festival and they talked about how Cleyvis' growth and maturity contributed to the growth and maturity of her novel. We then talk to Book Ends and Beginnings in Evanston, Illinois, a book lovers bookstore in a great college town. Books mentioned in this podcast: Neruda on the Park by Cleyvis Natera When I was Puerto Rican by Esmeralda Santiago The Candy House by Jennifer Egan The Street by Ann Petry The Bluest Eye by Toni Morrison The Snowy Day by Ezra Jack Keats Matrix by Lauren Groff Marrying the Ketchups by Jennifer Close

“The Liz Taylor Ring is a gorgeously written multigenerational novel, tracing the path of a diamond ring across decades, through the ups and down in the lives of one family. Brenda Janowitz beautifully weaves stories of love, of motherhood, and of the unbreakable bonds between siblings. I absolutely devoured this dazzling book!” - Jillian Cantor, USA Today bestselling author of Beautiful Little Fools Picked as one of the “must read” picks for 2022 by everyone from Town and Country magazine to Katie Couric Media, Brenda's latest amusing romp is part love story, part family saga. Hi there, I'm your host Jenny Wheeler, and today on Binge Reading Brenda talks about building a mystery and a family story across generations, built around a famous memento like the ring Richard Burton bought Elizabeth Taylor, or Grace Kelly's wedding dress. Introducing author Brenda Janowitz Jenny Wheeler: Welcome to the show, Brenda. It's fantastic to have you with us. Author Brenda Janowitz Brenda Janowitz: Thank you so much for having me. I'm thrilled to be here. Jenny Wheeler: Your latest book, The Liz Taylor Ring, has got a wonderful title for starters, but it's your seventh novel and it's received a great series of accolades. It's been welcomed by many publications people would listen to. It was one of Town and Country's best books for February, the Katie Couric people thought it was one of the best books of 2022 and Pop Sugar's most anticipated reads of 2022. Did that give you a bit of a lift to start? Brenda Janowitz: My goodness yes. It was so incredibly exciting. Certainly by book seven, you think you'd be used to it and everything would be old hat, but it feels like with every book you're starting fresh and you're starting over, so it's always a miracle when anyone likes your book. It feels like, okay, it's not terrible. We've got something here. Jenny Wheeler: I know you've had a lot of success in the past, but would you consider that this was almost a breakthrough book for you? Is it that good? Brenda Janowitz: I do think each book is reaching a little higher for me. The Grace Kelly Dress was a breakout for me because I was on one path and The Grace Kelly Dress put me out there a little more. Certainly with the follow up being The Liz Taylor Ring,

In today's Books with Hooks, Carly and CeCe evaluate the same three query letters, discussing developing character while developing plot; leveraging the reveal in a way that ramps up stakes and tension; having appropriate stakes for the age group and genre; framing what's happening around the main character(s); how we need disruption, imbalance and conflict in the MC's life, especially in the opening pages; and giving a personal universal element that the reader can imprint on in the opening pages. After which CeCe interviews Jennifer Close, author of Marrying the Ketchups, about the inherent anxiety that comes with writing, and how feeling insecure and doubtful is a part of the process no matter how many novels you've written; how Jennifer's process has changed now that she's published four books; how to make so-called ‘quiet' novels unputdownable and so-called ‘passive' characters compelling; Jennifer Close's list of Golden Advice to first-time writers; and the importance of sitting with editorial feedback before working on edits.Find us on our socials:Twitter: @TSNOTYAW @BiancaM_author @carlywatters @ceciliaclyraInstagram: @biancamarais_author @carlywatters @cece_lyra_agent @ the_shit_about_writingFacebook: @tsnotyawWebsite: www.biancamarais.comJennifer can be found at @jenniferaclose on Instagram and @jenniferclose on Twitter

In this episode, we're joined by Richa Gupta, Founder and President of Good Food for Good. Richa talks about her journey working for General Mills as a Marketing Manager, to founding her own brand and starting her mission to help people eat less sugar. Richa brought her ideas to life by whipping up her first batch of sauces in her own kitchen and selling them at a Farmer's Market. Richa tells us about a chance encounter with a customer at a Farmer's Market that inspired her to create what became her best-selling product. This enabled her to get her product on the shelves of Whole Foods Market and took her business to the next level.

Trevlig lyssning!
