Sean Carroll's Mindscape: Science, Society, Philosophy, Culture, Arts, and Ideas
A new year, and a new centennial -- 300 (regularly-numbered) episodes of Mindscape! Our tradition is to have a solo episode, and what better topic than the nature of time? Physicists and philosophers have so frequently suggested that time is some kind of illusion that it's become almost passé to believe that it might be fundamental. This is an issue where, despite the form of the question, physics has important things to say that most philosophers haven't yet caught up to. I will talk about ideas from quantum mechanics and quantum gravity that bear on the question of whether time is emergent or fundamental, and the implications of each possibility.Support Mindscape on Patreon.Blog post with transcript: https://www.preposterousuniverse.com/podcast/2025/01/06/300-solo-does-time-exist/Some of the papers discussed herein:Carroll (2008), "What If Time Really Exists?"Dyson, Kleban, and Susskind (2002), "Disturbing Implications of a Cosmological Constant."Albrecht and Sorbo (2004), "Can the Universe Afford Inflation?"Boddy, Carroll, and Pollack (2014), "De Sitter Space Without Dynamical Quantum Fluctuations."Lloyd (2016), "Decoherent Histories Approach to the Cosmological Measure Problem."Page and Wootters (1983), "Evolution Without Evolution: Dynamics Described by Stationary Observables."Albrecht (1994), "The Theory of Everything vs the Theory of Anything."Albrecht and Iglesias (2007), "The Clock Ambiguity and the Emergence of Physical Laws."See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
Today's guest has already been on the show to help us with a nutrition series we did earlier this year, however I thought it would be nice to have him back on to share his story. On this episode of Just In Stride, I had a great conversation with Elite Cyclist, Nick Kleban. He's been cycling almost since he could walk, early on in the mountain trails and later on the open roads. It wasn't always smooth sailing but ultimately he's found himself back in the saddle and loves to compete with his team year after year.Nick loves to geek out on gear, nutrition and race day strategy which always makes for a very interesting chat. He shares his knowledge, wisdom and enthusiasm for his sport with us, so sit back and enjoy the ride.-------Offer from Xact Nutrition: This episode is presented by our friends at Xact Nutrition and they are offering you 15% OFF your order when you use the code JUSTINSTRIDE. You may be asking yourself why this episode is titled “Fuel for Thought”. Any guesses?I mean if you know me, you know I love a good old play on words, hence the name of this new series that I've produced with Xact Nutrition.Athletes train for hours, work with coaches on technique, join workout groups and sign up for big challenges but one of the things we feel could be overlooked by athletes that is so critical, is education regarding nutrition and how it helps you perform. So we've put together a multi episode series to discuss specific topics pertaining to just that,in hopes that you come away with more in depth knowledge and a better understanding of nutrition. On this episode of Just In Stride, Fuel for Thought Edition, we learn how to train our gut and execute our fueling plan on race day with Nick Kleban. We go in depth on what it actually means to train your gut and how athletes can go about doing that effectively so they're ready on the day of their event.Fueling is as important as the physical training itself no matter what endurance sport you choose. You can train as well as you want but if you want to optimize your performance on race day, you have to go with your gut.-------Offer from Xact Nutrition: This episode is presented by our friends at Xact Nutrition and they are offering you 15% OFF your order when you use the code JUSTINSTRIDE. Season three of the Quakers Today Podcast begins with the introduction of new co-host Miche McCall (they, them). Along with co-host Peterson Toscano, they unpack the profound questions of faith, activism, and the essence of community. Meet Quakers Today podcast's newest team member, Miche McCall. Miche is a professional Friend who works to inspire others to live in alignment with Spirit and joy. After a decidedly secular (but beloved) experience at Oberlin College, Miche came to Quakerism through a fellowship with Quaker Voluntary Service in 2019. They graduated with a Masters in Theopoetics and Writing from Earlham School of Religion after finding a passion for the queer undercurrents of Quaker worship and silent performance art. Today, Miche works at Quaker Earthcare Witness and Quakers Today podcast. They are inspired by podcasts, ultimate frisbee, and, more recently, block printing. Miche lives in Brooklyn, New York, with their partner and a dog named Bread. Being a professional friend means that I get to spend all of my time thinking and worshipping, and learning more about this faith. -Miche McCall Community, Interconnectedness, and the Quest for Economic Justice Nathan Kleban shares profound insights from his spiritual journey, emphasizing the transformative power of community living and its impact on personal growth and collective action. Kleban explores his experiences and observations, ranging from the labor dynamics in the Salinas Valley to the complexities of navigating individualism and community needs. He critically addresses the exploitation embedded in global supply chains, urging a conscious reevaluation of our roles within these systems. Through his journey across different communities and his work with the Alternatives to Violence Project and Right Sharing of World Resources, Nathan exemplifies a deep commitment to confronting injustice and fostering relationships that pave the way for meaningful change. Read Nathan's article Move Toward the Suffering: Confronting Economic Injustice Head-On. A transformative moment for me was living in community. That sense of community was very transformative for me both in learning more about myself and then seeing what we can do together. I just kind of saw myself becoming a lot more alive in those contexts. -Nathan Kleban Quaker Testimonies as Pathways: Confronting White Supremacy with Equity and Community Lauren Brownlee, from the Bethesda Friends Meeting in Baltimore Yearly Meeting, delves into the intersection of Quaker principles and racial equity. Drawing on Tema Okun's work on white supremacy culture, Brownlee identifies characteristics such as perfectionism, binary thinking, and urgency that permeate our society and contrasts these with Quaker testimonies like peace, community, and stewardship. She emphasizes the importance of embracing a diversity of perspectives, backgrounds, and worldviews to foster a beloved community grounded in equity and justice. Through a reflective examination of Quaker testimonies, Brownlee advocates for actively engaging in the antidotes to white supremacy culture within Quaker communities and beyond, underscoring the role of discomfort in growth and the necessity of inclusive community building. Lauren Brownlee is the deputy general secretary of Friends Committee on National Legislation (FCNL). Lauren Brownlee appears in the QuakerSpeak video, How Quaker Testimonies Can Combat White Supremacy. The full version of this QuakerSpeak video can be found on the YouTube QuakerSpeak channel. Or visit Quakerspeak.com. Our community testimony invites us to think about who all is in our community. How do we have expanding overlapping concentric circles of community? And how are we caring uniquely, for each member of our community? -Laureen Brownlee Reimagining Quaker Faith: Towards an Ecology of Light and Life Lauren Brownlee reviews A Quaker Ecology: Meditations on the Future of Friends by Cherice Bock in the March 2024 issue of Friends Journal. The book, inspired by Bock's presentations at the 2020 New England Yearly Meeting, explores the link between Quaker practices and the ecological crisis, proposing an eco-reformation through watershed discipleship and an eco-theology of light. It challenges Quakers to deepen their relationship with nature and act on environmental stewardship, offering a roadmap for faith-driven ecological engagement. In this episode of "Eighty Twenty", join hosts Georgia Sinclair and Shanina Shaik as they welcome fitness entrepreneur and creator of the popular LEKFIT workout studio and method, Lauren Kleban. Lauren explains how her background as a professional dancer led her to create the LEKFIT workout, which packs a full-body routine into 50 minutes. Classes take place on mini trampolines with motivational lighting and music to make exercise feel like a performance. A major topic of conversation is Lauren's experience keeping her studio open during the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. Despite restrictions, she felt it didn't make sense to close since willing participants viewed exercise as beneficial. This resulted in significant backlash and accusations from people who saw her actions as dangerous or political. Lauren grieved losing friends but stayed confident in providing an outlet to stay healthy. Later in the episode, the hosts explores their approaches to diet, self-care rituals, parenting, and more. Lauren shares her typical food intake. She listens to her body's signals rather than forcing meals. Overall, Lauren advocates living life over fear, getting sick as part of building natural immunity. The pandemic brought legions of unknowns, but the solution is respecting differences of opinion, not forcing beliefs onto others. People deserve grace to make their own choices. The hosts praise Lauren's strength and free thinking.

Due to a blowout wedding, a visit to Pittsburgh, and - let's face it - poor planning, the guys decided it was as good a week to revisit a conversation had nearly a year ago with a brewing idol-turned-highly respected peer.... Dan Kleban, founding brother/brewer/owner of Maine Beer Company!Dan and Noah delve into their respective homebrewing roots, influences, and initial attraction to the balance that defines beer-making; Dan talks about the major career pivots both he and his brother undertook to make their business a reality, and outlines a shockingly-recent dystopian past in which tasting rooms did not exist; and Matty discusses the many ways he's been both inspired and driven to action by MBC's commitment to the planet. It's been said before and will be said again, but this really is on the shortlist for most cherished interviews the podcast has enabled. As they say, "Heroes live forever, but legends never die." Or something like that... .......... ............................ ......................... Music: "Mountain Climb" by Jake Hill
Maine Beer Co was founded in 2009 during the financial crisis, a challenging time for attorneys such as Dan Kleban. Having witnessed the ugly underbelly of capitalism, Dan and his brother Dave sought to build a brewery that could be successful by maintaining a moral approach to sustainability. The company sought success not through rapid growth and expansion, rather by treating the environment and his employees well, creating a virtuous cycle. Anne Marisic, the Director of Marketing and Communication, highlights how she discovered Maine Beer Co and the pull that compelled her to partake in their mission. She points out that small, intentional, daily steps combined with long term strategic efforts - such as applying for grants - have allowed Maine Beer Company to take big steps towards its goals of reducing its environmental footprint. We discuss the sensibilities and inspiration behind the appearance, aroma, and flavors of Maine Beer Co’s beers. Guiding principles extend to packaging; bottle conditioning, iconic, thick brown glass half liter bottles and concise branding stand out on the shelves. Mainstays such as Woods and Waters, Peeper and Lunch are named for initiatives linked to 1% For The Planet, an organization and business network central to Maine Beer Co’s environmental stewardship efforts. Success resulting from critical acclaim for the beers looks are plain to see. Dan also discusses the overlap of Maine Beer Company’s environmental work and equity, diversity and inclusion. While the Brewers Association - of which the Chair of the Associate Board of Directors - is working to address social justice, members, regardless of their beliefs, should start by setting a good example. “If you care about the environment you care about equity.” Find Maine Beer Co. A conversation with Dan Kleban the co-founder of Maine Beer Co. on how paying employees a fair wage, staying true to a company philosophy, and taking care of the planet has brought peace and success to his brewery.
They say to never meet your heroes, but this week proves that's poor advice. Dan Kleban, co-founder of Maine Beer Company, sits down with Noah and Matty. After some initial gushing about how generous Dan and his brother Dave were to get Noah and Pete into MBC's first space, the conversation shifts to the Dan's early experiences with beer (Sierra Nevada strikes again) and what laid the groundwork for what continues to be MBC's philosophy on the beer-making side of the business. Dan and Noah also get into their mutual roots as homebrewers and (early) brewing podcast listeners, as both Substance and Zoe begun their existence as thinly-veiled clone recipes. After discussing collaboration beers and the similar reasons both MBC and BBB do them less than most, things shift to Dan and his brewery's commitment to the environment. He talks about his inspiration for being a part of 1% For the Planet from the very start of his business, why customers are smarter than they are often given credit for, and the inertia that comes when you "Do What's Right". This fun, informative, and inspiring conversation with one of Noah and Matty's Dream Team brewers was simply a joy, and if anyone out there is looking for a role model, head to Route 1 in Freeport............ ........................ .................. ......................... .................. ........................ ....................... ........Music: "Mountain Climb" by Jake Hill

Maine Beer Co. was started with a goal to "Do What's Right" Dan Kleban and his brother David founded Maine Beer Company with a single recipe and the goal to "Do What's Right." That mantra carries through in every aspect of running their business from the beer they brew, to employee relations, and how they support and give back to their community. Dan joins us this week to talk about that philosophy and the passion he has to see it through. We enjoy a few Maine Beer Company beers as the conversation moves on to a discussion about the collapse of DME, a large brewing equipment manufacturer, and how that could be a nail in the coffin for some new brewers. Of course, we talk about brewing hoppy and balanced beers and teaching craft beer neophytes that hoppy and bitter are not the same thing. Dan also shares his passion for environmental causes and how their pledge to 1% For The Planet supports those causes, as well as the impact that brewing with local ingredients has on our environment. I am so excited about today’s guest! Lauren Kleban is the creator of LEKfit, a dance-inspired fitness and sculpting method designed to create long and lean muscles. Lauren started LEKFIT out of her garage-turned-fitness studio, and recently launched LEKfit On Demand, which allows you to stream full-body workouts every Wednesday straight from her LA studio. As a mom of two littles, LEKfit workouts have been lifesavers for me. If I can start my day with a LEKfit home workout, I know that I will be the best version of myself for the rest of the day. I am so inspired by Lauren and I knew I wanted to have her on the show because not only is she a badass entrepreneur and mama of two toddlers, but she also has such a positive, down-to-earth energy and is constantly bending over backwards to connect with and empower the women (and some men) that come to her classes and subscribe to LEKfit On Demand. On today’s episode we discuss: Lauren’s background in dance and how she shifted from dance into the fitness world; How she came up with idea of LEKfit and the process of building it into the successful business it is today; what she believes contributed to the success of her company, and what distinguishes it from other dance-inspired fitness programs out there; Finding balance as a mother and entrepreneur; what it’s like working with her husband (he is the CFO of the their company) and how they keep their marriage healthy and happy; How she is helping women during and after pregnancy and her frustration with the care women currently receive after they have given birth (specifically we talk a lot about diastase recti); her own self-care routine that helps her stay sane; how she deals with misunderstanding and criticism. I absolutely adore Lauren and LEKfit and I can’t wait for you to listen to this episode (and to try LEKfit)!
