Brought to you by The Real Voice - Mel Allen. Providing voice over for commercials, podcasts, explainer videos, and more. Samples and demos at https://therealvoice.com I tweeted at Pints and Panels today to see if there were any Girl Scout Cookie and Beer Pairings to recommend - and it's coming in March! I'll do my best to keep you informed as my cookies just dropped and I might try some pairings as I have heard Samoas pair well with a Brown Ale, S'mores with a Peanut Butter Chocolate Stout, and Shortbread aka Trefoil with Sours or Pale Ales - but I have not tried myself yet. If you have some good pairings, let me know on Twitter https://twitter.com/The_Boozebuddy Anyway - on to the stories - which prompted this pairing to begin with! Snacks are good, beer is good - but some complement each other really well. So get your game face on for this weekend and if you don't have good recipes yet for your Super party get things moving. From Pretzels, Spinach dip, and wings to Maibock, Stouts, and Saisons it's going to help you really enjoy the day - whether or not your team pulls through or isn't in the game. https://food52.com/blog/15710-10-beer-and-food-pairings-for-the-big-game The next one is a bit of a Valentine's pairing, but for those who just aren't into the wines. This one is for the Scotch and chocolate lovers - a wonderful level of indulgence that makes my mouth water just thinking about it! This is a bit of an old list - but I couldn't find one that went across several brands and types that was updated and, honestly, this one just seems like it's so much more of a complete list. Head over to et the run down https://scotchwhisky.com/magazine/food/18340/10-ways-to-pair-chocolate-with-whisky/ And now for something completely different - The University of Southern Maine (USM) Foundation has received a $100,000 gift from Maine Beer Company to create a unique Brewing Up Opportunity Internship & Scholarship Fund. The gift establishes a pilot program for USM students that includes a paid internship with Maine Beer Company and a scholarship award of up to $5,000 per academic year upon completion of the internship. The program's goal is to promote diversity and inclusion within the craft beverage industry by providing access to education, on-the-job training, and mentoring to help develop a new generation of beer industry professionals. That's verbatim from the press release you can read at https://usm.maine.edu/publicaffairs/maine-beer-company-gift-creates-brewing-opportunity-program-usm Next Time: Tomorrow we'll go Another Round with the Eco-Friendly Beer Drinker - make sure to tune in! I also release the Another Round editions earlier than the weekday editions! The Boozebuddy Update continues on video! The pride of the Cornell Big Red machine and perhaps the most versatile runner on the MUT scene in the past 15 years, Max King is one of my running heroes and now one of my all-time favorite guests. Know how many people have won both the World Mountain Running Championship and the World 100K Championship? One guy. That's the list. But he's also qualified for the Olympic Trials five times by my count (twice in the steeple, three times in the marathon) and has represented the US at the World XC Championships four times. We caught up with Max after he just got back from the Salomon young athlete training camp to talk about why it's taken him so long to get back to the 100 mile distance, his goals for Western States, adventure racing, longevity, and of course, the Dining Hall Classic.Links:Famous enough to have a Wikipedia page!Max's trail running campsWorld Athletics profileInstagramThis older interview gives you a little beta on the DHCBeers for this episode: Foreign Objects Mind Body Light Sound, Maine Beer Co. Maine Beer Co was founded in 2009 during the financial crisis, a challenging time for attorneys such as Dan Kleban. Having witnessed the ugly underbelly of capitalism, Dan and his brother Dave sought to build a brewery that could be successful by maintaining a moral approach to sustainability. The company sought success not through rapid growth and expansion, rather by treating the environment and his employees well, creating a virtuous cycle. Anne Marisic, the Director of Marketing and Communication, highlights how she discovered Maine Beer Co and the pull that compelled her to partake in their mission. She points out that small, intentional, daily steps combined with long term strategic efforts - such as applying for grants - have allowed Maine Beer Company to take big steps towards its goals of reducing its environmental footprint. We discuss the sensibilities and inspiration behind the appearance, aroma, and flavors of Maine Beer Co’s beers. Guiding principles extend to packaging; bottle conditioning, iconic, thick brown glass half liter bottles and concise branding stand out on the shelves. Mainstays such as Woods and Waters, Peeper and Lunch are named for initiatives linked to 1% For The Planet, an organization and business network central to Maine Beer Co’s environmental stewardship efforts. Success resulting from critical acclaim for the beers looks are plain to see. Dan also discusses the overlap of Maine Beer Company’s environmental work and equity, diversity and inclusion. While the Brewers Association - of which the Chair of the Associate Board of Directors - is working to address social justice, members, regardless of their beliefs, should start by setting a good example. “If you care about the environment you care about equity.” Find Maine Beer Co. Anne Marisic, Head of Marketing and Events at Maine Beer Co. and Jonathan dig into the founding story of the company and how their slogan, “Do What's Right.” is at the heart of everything they do. They have been a part of 1% For The Planet since the company began in 2008. “We’ll take care of our people, our communities, and our planet and make great beer while doing it.” said Anne.

MadTree Brewing looks to give back as they celebrate 7 years This week we head to Ohio to chat with MadTree Brewing's Trevor Self. Trevor has worn a lot of hats during his time with the brewery. He started out like many others, volunteering his time to help can delicious beers. This eventually let to a real, paid position and finally into a QA role where he helped transition MadTree to their fancy new (and much larger) brewhouse. Today, Trevor is Assistant Brand Manager, spreading the word about MadTree mission and beers. We find out about the plans for their 7th anniversary, their recent commitment to 1% for the Planet, the brew scene in Ohio, and lots of hot coffee beer talk. In the news Brian shares another story about how Big Beer just can't catch a break, and the fact that there are laws when you're drinking Claws. That mantra carries through in every aspect of running their business from the beer they brew, to employee relations, and how they support and give back to their community. Dan joins us this week to talk about that philosophy and the passion he has to see it through. We enjoy a few Maine Beer Company beers as the conversation moves on to a discussion about the collapse of DME, a large brewing equipment manufacturer, and how that could be a nail in the coffin for some new brewers. Of course, we talk about brewing hoppy and balanced beers and teaching craft beer neophytes that hoppy and bitter are not the same thing. Dan also shares his passion for environmental causes and how their pledge to 1% For The Planet supports those causes, as well as the impact that brewing with local ingredients has on our environment. [caption id="attachment_45659" align="aligncenter" width="800"] While most of Maine Beer Co.'s beers are meant to be enjoyed fresh, our 2106 King Titus Porter was still drinking very well. Hops had faded but it still delivered big roasty and chocolatey notes. Podcast 31: Preshow Beers : Alex - Nobody's Robot, Nick - Warm Hand Splash Another low-key week for us, but we're back and we're going to entertain you. Jake talked about his adventures on Hanover St. and Alex has opinions on cupcakes and wants to know everyone's take on the word moist. We discuss at length the correct amount of icing on cupcakes and our other favorite desserts. Moving back to beer, we hit on what adjuncts can be used in beers and how over used some flavors are. Some of these flavors are winners and some are stinkers. Coming into the holiday season, we're gonna have some stellar stouts and Christmas ales. We're gonna focus next week on trying some of these styles and commenting on these to gear up for the holidays. Our hatred of pumpkin spices and pumpkin beers is strong. Overall we're looking for balance and still drinking a beer from these flavors. Brew Gentlemen released Double Mex on Sunday. Were you able to get your hands on this special release? We'll be tasting this one on Christmas Eve probably. We talk about traveling for beer and what we factor into going to these places that are further away than our normal stops. In that conversation we hit on Full Pint and Brew Gentlemen and Jake and Alex relive California with Russian River. Beer #1: Jake - Red Currant Fated Farmer - Trillium Brewing (American Wild Ale - 6.7%) Jake raved about this beer. Excited to see how this series evolves. Very sour and heavily carbonated. Beer #1: Alex/Nick/Sara - 120 Minute IPA (2015) - Dogfishhead (Triple IPA - 18-25%) Alex was shocked by how smooth this beer was. Very malty and cloudy, but not hazy. The holy grail for hopheads does not disappoint. There's no way to guess that the ABV is as high as it is. Brew News! Sixpoint was acquired by Southern Tier/Victory Beer. Steel City Beer Wholesalers are bringing Hoof Hearted Brewing, Rotunda Brewing and Maine Beer Co to Pittsburgh. Beer #2: Nick/Alex Etch - Dancing Gnome (IPA - 6.6%) Much better batch this time. We're drinking Christmas beers next week! Check back then!

We made the quick trek to 920 Main in Westbrook to visit the folks from Mast Landing Brewing. Mast Landing founders Ian Dorsey, and Mike Capen chatted with us alongside former Maine Beer Co brewer-turned Mast Landing guru Dylan Webber. We talked about what it was like to go from a comfortable, secure job, to risking it all and launching a startup business. In the second half, we get up to our usual shenanigans as things loosen up. Lots of laughs and new friends made. And of course... Jiu Jitsu. Off microphone were head brewer Neil Fredrick and Sarah Capen.
Maine Beer Co has been on our radar for a while, but isn't available in Austin. Lucky for us, we grabbed 5 bottles from The Beer Temple while we were in Chicago.
