Genetic variations affect 1 in 75 people, and with genetic testing now available, there is no reason why it should be restricted. Despite the clear benefits, publicly funded testing is currently available only to those who meet restrictive criteria. Every Australian, of any age, deserves the right to know if they fall within the 2% of the population at high risk, so they can take preventive action to protect their health. We want a population-wide, criteria-free screening program. A national initiative like this would put Australia at the forefront of preventive healthcare, ensuring that every Australian knows their genetic risks and can take steps to protect their future health. Here's why this matters: The DNA screening test can cost as little as $200-$400 per person—an affordable price for a program that has the potential to save lives and reduce long-term healthcare costs. The cost of cancer care alone to the Australian healthcare system is over $6 BILLION annually By identifying genetic risks early, we can reduce the number of people needing expensive treatments later, saving taxpayer dollars while preventing disease. The 10,000-person pilot completed study at Monash University has laid the groundwork for a scalable, nationwide DNA screening program. But to move forward, the project needs government funding to expand beyond the initial trial group and make this life-saving test available to every Australian who wants it, regardless of age or background. Kathleen Merrigan authored the law establishing standards for organic food and the federal definition of sustainable agriculture. On this week's episode, she talks with Ron about her life's work, including her time in USDA, where she led the Know Your Farmer, Know Your Food initiative to support local food systems, and was a key architect of Michelle Obama's “Let's Move!” campaign. In 2010, Kathleen was celebrated by Time Magazine as one of the 100 Most Influential People in the World in 2010. Currently, she serves as the Kelly and Brian Swette Professor in the School of Sustainability and executive director of the Swette Center for Sustainable Food Systems at Arizona State University. Before that, she was the Executive Director of Sustainability at the George Washington University. From 2009 to 2013, Kathleen was deputy secretary and COO of the United States Department of Agriculture. And, was the first woman to chair the Ministerial Conference of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations. Prior to USDA, she was a professor at the Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy at Tufts University, Administrator of the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service, and served on the U.S. Senate Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry. Kathleen is a board member of Stone Barns Center for Food and Agriculture, Center for Climate and Energy Solutions, and a Trustee of CIFOR and ICRAF. She is a partner in Astanor Ventures and an advisor to S2G Ventures, two firms investing in ag-tech innovation. Merrigan holds a PhD in Public Policy and Environmental Planning from Massachusetts Institute of Technology, MPA from University of Texas at Austin, and BA from Williams College. These foods can increase the toxic load in your body, turn on inflammation, and alter your biochemistry. These foods give you a lot of calories, but relatively nothing else in terms of protein, vitamins, minerals, and more. You have your allotment of calories for the day, but relatively little nutrition to show for it. Why are childhood diseases rising at an alarming rate? A lot of children mimic their parent’s poor eating behavior. Many children eat four times their daily suggested calories at breakfast alone. Processed foods are usually filled with chemicals and inflammatory fats and very little real nutritional value. Type two diabetes was common in older adults. Now children as young as five years old are being diagnosed. Kathleen Merrigan was instrumental in crafting the Organic Foods Production Act in 1990. She also served as the U.S. Deputy Secretary of Agriculture during the Obama Administration. During that time, she spearheaded the Know Your Farmer, Know Your Food program. And just recently, she was named as the first executive director of the Swette Center for Sustainable Food Systems at Arizona State University. She previously served as executive director of sustainability at George Washington University. And she was named one of the "100 most influential people in the world" by Time Magazine in 2010. As you’ll hear, she has a lot to say about the true cost of food and the future of organic farming. She has a big vision for a food system that takes into account biodiversity, human health, water quality, climate and waste.
