Welcome to this episode of 20/20 Money! My guest on today's show is Tim Merrigan with Acquios Advisors. In the 16 years or so that I've been an advisor, I've noticed that there's something “motivating” about turning 50: people start thinking about their lives differently and thus they start re-evaluating the way they've been investing and spending not only their money, but also their time. Tim joins me on the show to dialogue about some of the common questions, concerns, and opportunities that we see from each of our respective points-of-view when ODs put a half-century worth of candles on their birthday cake (and yes I did use that specific framing of a half-century to emphasize the point that we're not getting any younger but yet we'll keep getting what we've been getting if we keep doing what we've been doing. You're welcome). :)   One other note about the goal setting study that I reference towards the end of the episode: turns out, based on a bit of research post-recording, that neither study actually happened despite it being recited in the annals of consulting, personal productivity, and business management content over the years. Despite this debunking, I think we can all agree that setting and writing down goals is much more beneficial and gives us a much better chance of succeeding than wishing things to happen. There's a link to an article I found in the show notes that expands on this in greater detail.   As a reminder, you can get all the information discussed in today's conversation by visiting our website at integratedpwm.com and clicking on the Learning Center. While there, be sure to subscribe to our monthly “planning life on purpose” newsletter that's filled with tips and ideas to help you plan your best life, on purpose. You can also set up a Triage conversation to learn a little bit more about how we serve in the capacity of a personal and professional CFO: helping OD practice owners around the country reduce their tax bill, proactively manage cash flow, and make prudent investment decisions both in and out of their practice to ultimately help them live their best life on purpose. J Darrin Gross Mike Merrigan, and Bo Kort, what is the BIGGEST RISK? Mike Merrigan: I'll go first, if you're, because you're an insurance, one of the best feelings I've gotten, as far as an insurance thing, and looking at risk is once I had it explained to me, once I did get some assets, an umbrella policy gives me a lot of comfort, never had to use it. But I feel like it's a good investment. So if you're talking about literally insurance, I like the fact that I have an umbrella policy to protect things that I might not be thinking of. So I love having that. And I think it's a good value. And I'm glad to have it, and I don't think I'll ever not have it. On the other side of just generally speaking risk. One of the things that I learned, the biggest risk is not taking a risk, not taking the chance of buying real estate, I don't care, then buying an index fund, throwing your 10% every year, or every month, or whatever. But the biggest risk in life is don't take a risk. And guess where you're going to end up. If you can draw a picture, you're going to be just fine, you're going to be 30 pounds overweight, you're going to have a retirement that's going to be small, and you're going to just live this life, as opposed to take a few risks. Get a little older, take care of yourself, physically eat where you want, stay where you want, live, where you want, do what you want, it's a lot happier life, don't take a risk is the biggest risk and take in my opinion. Bo Kort: I agree completely. Gonna be hard to follow that one because I wanted to so Trump. I would say the other thing that I was thinking of is, is that in risk, and in real estate investing, is just staying disciplined and don't get emotional over things. And I think partnerships help in that, you know, like Mike talked about, he's good at one thing I'm good at another. Another thing that we lean on each other about a lot of times is we'll come up with a deal, and we'll have a feeling about it. We'll be in the office, and we'll spend hours just going over it and this and that. Okay, what do you guys want to do. And then one of us usually speaks up and goes to a call tomorrow. Tomorrow, nobody makes a decision that we're supposed to call him tonight. So call them back and let them know, we're not going to talk to him till tomorrow, you know, I mean, just let them know, something came up, whatever it is, and we sleep on it, we come back, and just make sure that we're not being emotional about the decisions that we're making. And because of being like that, and a lot of that is Mike's good about that to hold us all accountable for for things like that. But um, it has saved us tremendously on not making mistakes. And mistakes are good, and you learn from mistakes. And that's why you start small so that you don't have the type of mistakes that crumble you. But you educate yourself from those mistakes and it keeps you to be disciplined and not get too emotional about things. And your old self will be thanking your ass whenever you're whenever you got the money coming to you. Because you were disciplined, persistent

Created By: Yariv WolokMusic By: Jay LubesWebsite: https://www.flyersnittygritty.comAs the playoffs roll on there is plenty of envy flying around amongst Flyers fans. At this point teams are dropping like flies every week as the unconventional NHL season is finally finding its way to an end. With a wide range of competitiveness and controversy in series played around the league, it's easy for fans to compare their hometown Flyers to any of the teams showing success in the playoffs. However, it's important for fans to realize a success story is not set in stone and that the Flyers could be back in the race, quicker than assumed by the frustrated fanbase. With a couple of additions, the Flyers, are capable of bringing in a much better team effort all around. Even if there are minimal moves made, the exceptions should bat this team has enough internal talent to resolve a majority of these issues internally. One big piece the Flyers have been looking for all year is a top pairing defender to compliment Ivan Provorov. Seth Jones' name has been swirling around the rumor mills, even if they are only rumors, it is an opportunity to discuss the possibility. Jones is the type of player that almost every team would covet and the type of the Flyers would invest heavily in brining over to the franchise. They have the pieces, but time will tell if the opportunity is even available. On this episode of Gettin Gritty Wit It, I welcome back local hockey player and friend of the show Anthony Merrigan. Matt sits down with Grayl founder Travis Merrigan. Grayl makes extremely simple and highly effective water purification devices to help provide clean, safe, drinking water to people in need while helping them to cut down on their plastic use. Grayl is the perfect example of a company that exists FAR beyond its product. On the surface, their product still is a one of a kind water filtration device. It's a one-pump water bottle design and It's one of the few that actively filters out viruses as well as particulate matter and bacteria; There's something to be said about that alone. However, beyond an efficient and effective design, Grayl's bigger message is doing good, helping people, and driving to make the world a better place any way they can. When it comes to environmental awareness Grayl's ability to walk the walk is vastly more important than just ‘talking the talk'.  In this episode of ReddyYeti | Built On Passion Travis Merrigan dives into what Grayl is and is meant to be, how a company's message and actions should exist beyond their product, and how putting together the right team is everything.

It feels like the season is already over in so many ways. Coach Alain Vigneault feels like a different person at this point as the entire organization has entered the bizarro world. A team with an immense amount of depth at all positions no seems like they can't find anyone to play consistent hockey. Finger pointing has begun in the media and players like Shayne Gostisbehere was waived for the first time in his career. At this point the Flyers find themselves out of a playoff spot and wondering, what went wrong and why so fast? No matter what group of players you look at, you could argue that they have lost confidence. Outside a few veterans who have been able to be consistent for majority fo the season, are still not able to right the ship. Ultimately this team doesn't feel the same since COVID-19 distrusted the world and Philadelphia's Stanley Cup dreams. On this episode of Getting Gritty Wit It, I welcome back guest Anth Merrigan on the show to talk about the Flyers' current two game win streak and how it doesn't feel stable. After a 6-1 loss to the Sabers, our fears came to fruition. Michelle Klassen (“MK”) Merrigan began her career in humanitarian aid, working frequently in the developing world. For the past decade, MK led the development of advanced energy solutions that meet the mission of US military, security, and peacekeeping forces operating beyond secure supply lines. Opening up new markets with creative capital, this work quickly led to border security in support of national security interests; economic development efforts through small business models at the last kilometer; and in developing regions and markets.Beholden to the idea that if Detroit could put a car in every driveway, we could also provide power as an economic enabler, in every region of the world. MK led a diverse team from a small prototype shop in Ferndale, Michigan. This team is responsible for some of the energy industry’s most incredible firsts, including the first off-grid solar microgrid of its size providing 24/7 power to a Haitian village, in Les Anglais, Haiti, as well as the first off-grid environmental monitoring system for use by a major American power utility, in the California desert.Growing up in the military and often the minority and ‘new kid’ in multiple cities and schools across our nation, MK learned how to quickly find areas of commonality and connection - a habit that has enabled trust for her influence in rooms that will define our way of living for generations.Since 2016, MK has led a small advisory firm called Mana Kalani Advisors in an effort to scale industries and emerging market efforts on behalf of, and in service to, end-users, operators, national security interests, aid agencies, communities, and island nations. In 2020, MK founded Mana Boxes, a curated subscription box program for handcrafted fashion and decor that supports women artists and entrepreneurs in South Africa. Mana Boxes provides livelihood and empowerment to over 1800 women, and their communities, through its subscription model. In addition to being a strategic advisor on important resource issues facing our generation, MK serves as Chairwoman of the Board for Mana Pacific, a benefit corporation organizing leaders across 22 Pacific island nations to develop, finance, and build energy projects in support of 100% renewable energy in the region by 2025. MK also advises the Board of Directors for Michigan Women in Defense, as well as SlipStream, Inc., and serves on the Leadership Council of the nation’s largest small business administration, SBAM.In addition, we deep dive into the heart and soul of what Mana means and how you can take actionable steps for health and peace.  For any person wanting to learn more about women's empowerment, this episode is certainly for you. Learn more and get connected athttps://www.instagram.com/manaboxes/https://www.manaboxes.com/ https://mkadvisors.org/https://www.facebook.com/manalifeboxes/https://www.pinterest.com/manaboxes/Michigan Business Network Podcast https://www.michiganbusinessnetwork.com/blog/michelle-klassen-merrigan-all-about-mana-boxesWatch and learn more with Nelson Mandela's former chief of staff and CEO of Nelson Mandela Foundation, Sello Hatang with Michelle and her parent Annihttps://studio.youtube.com/video/69cSD0xtv9o/edit Sign up for my mailing list herehttps://www.chonacas.com/newsletter/ Subscribe, Leave a Review and please share the MANA, the message, this episode with others :)

After winning a tense game 2, the Flyers were not able to secure wins in back-to-back games over the weekend. Ironically the Flyers just played some of their best hockey of the post season with a dominant 2nd period of a 3-2 loss in game 4. While the Flyers still lost, they definitely seem like they are gaining momentum. Can they carry it into game 5 and push the Islanders to the limit? It's always one game at a time, but the Flyers seem confident that they can turn it around and that's always the first step. When the Flyers came back against the Boston Bruins a decade ago, they never seemed out of any game. This series doesn't feel that different. On this most recent episode of the Gettin Gritty Wit It podcast, Yariv has guests Anth Merrigan and Frankie Steskal to discuss the situation. The Flyers might of not played their best hockey, but they've had an opportunity to win every game. The Flyers are down, but not out...

In the beginning it was Ed Snider's drive to bring hockey to Philadelphia. However, as time has passed there has been an evolution of the hockey community. Organized, talented, and tight nit the local hockey roster in Philadelphia is strong and proud. A constant community that grows internally and generates the drive, that fuels the Flyers fanbase. It’s not just the professionals that sell the game of hockey, they’re only a representation of it. While hockey Canada is known for engulfing its country in hockey,  Philadelphia has its neighborhoods entrenched hockey culture. It’s the local legends that drive the successes and the growth of hockey culture in Philly. It’s why Flyers fans never stop to remind themselves that Johnny Gaudreau and Bobby Ryan are local athletes. Other names like also local hockey hero TJ Brennan and his younger brother Shayne Brennan, or friend of the show, Ryan Marker, are all members of Philadelphia's hockey culture. On this episode of of The Flyers Nitty Gritty we have on local athlete and hockey advocate, Anthony Merrigan. Anth has been one of the leaders of the culture in the Philadelphia hockey community for over two decades, consistently plying, organizing, and keeping the game goin. The way we see it, Anthony is the definition of “if you build it, they will come”. It’s his love for the game and his commitment to leadership that keeps the culture together. The hockey community can only hope that he takes it one step further. Listen in on this weeks episode as we get Anthony's take on local hockey, player development, and Flyers goaltending.
