On today's program, Arkansas pastor Steven Smith steps down after fallout from mishandling abuse allegations against a former children's minister. We'll have details. Also, controversial megachurch pastors Mark Driscoll and John Lindell seemed to reconcile on stage at the Stronger Men's Conference last week…but since then, tensions between the two leaders have only intensified. We'll take a look. And, how a small U-S evangelical seminary is defying the odds. While many theological schools are shrinking, this one's enrollment numbers keep growing. But we begin today with news of two resignations from leaders of Orange, a ministry known for hosting one of the world's most prominent family ministry conferences which is actually being held this week in Atlanta. Orange released an official statement stating that its founder and current chief creative officer Reggie Joiner has resigned along with CEO Kristen Ivy. I was in Lexington, Kentucky, last week, for the Evangelical Press Association annual meeting, and I'm pleased to report that my weekly column, “Editor's Notebook,” brought home a third place prize in their annual Awards of Excellence contest. I also had the privilege of presenting a Lifetime Achievement Award – posthumously – to Joel Belz, the founder of WORLD Magazine and a friend and mentor to me. I also want to remind everyone that this is the last week to get an important new book that we are offering to everyone who donates to MinistryWatch in April. It's called “How I Lost $1,500,000 in Missions” by John Addink. If you are a donor to foreign missions projects, a ministry leader of a missions organization, or perhaps a pastor who supports missionaries, you should read this book. We'll send it to you absolutely free, as our thank you, for a gift of any size to MinistryWatch this month. Just go to MinistryWatch.com and hit the donate button at the top of the page. The producer for today's program is Jeff McIntosh. We get database and other technical support from Stephen DuBarry, Rod Pitzer, and Casey Sudduth. Writers who contributed to today's program include Daniel Ritchie, Jessica Eturralde, Clayton Sidenbender, Shannon Cuthrell, Brittany Smith, and Christina Darnell. A special thank you to Religion UnPlugged for contributing material for this week's podcast. Until next time, may God bless you.

On today's program, General Episcopal Theological Seminary thought it had found a solution to its financial woes—until 7 bishops intervened, saying they didn't want to be in partnership with a conservative. We'll have details. Also, controversial pastor Mark Driscoll got booted off the stage at last weekend's Stronger Men's Conference after calling out the conference host for his choice of entertainment opening night. And, Chuck Swindoll steps down as senior pastor of his church—but insists he's not retiring. He'll continue to preach the majority of the sermons. We'll take a look. But first, Calvin University finds itself at the center of a lawsuit with its former president. I was in Indianapolis last week meeting with donors and others there, next week I'll be in Lexington, Kentucky, for the annual meeting of the Evangelical Press Association. It will be my honor to present a Lifetime Achievement Award – posthumously – to Joel Belz, the founder of WORLD Magazine and a friend and mentor to me. We'll have details. Also, Salem Media—one of the only Christian publicly traded companies—has reported a $46 million operating loss in its latest annual report. That story later in the program. COMPLETE TRANSCRIPT: FIRST SEGMENT Warren Hello everybody. I'm Warren Smith, coming to you from Charlotte, North Carolina. Natasha I'm Natasha Cowden in Denver, Colorado. We'd like to welcome you to the MinistryWatch podcast. Warren On today's program, a proposed State Department rule could impact employment regulations for nonprofits…and some ministry leaders are voicing concern. We'll take a look. And, the North Carolina pastor who went viral for remarks he made from the pulpit about rape has apologized—but the controversy, which has sparked ongoing protests, caught the attention of lawmakers and inflamed the state's debate over school vouchers. We'll have details. Also, Salem Media—one of the only Christian publicly traded companies—has reported a $46 million operating loss in its latest annual report. That story later in the program. Natasha But first two Christian Colleges face legal challenges due to their names. Warren: Lubbock Christian University in Texas and newly renamed Rochester Christian University in Michigan —Both schools are associated with Churches of Christ. Lubbock Christian University found itself in court defending the use of its LCU moniker against Louisiana Christian University, which adopted that name only two and a half years ago after more than a century as Louisiana College. Natasha: So what's happening between the schools? Warren: A January 2023 letter to the Louisiana school stated, “Lubbock Christian University will again request an amicable discussion between our institution[s] on this matter. But we are prepared to defend our right to our trademark if necessary.” As of January, the case had been transferred to a new judge and assigned to a magistrate for a report and recommendation. While the parties await a ruling, both universities continue to use their LCU logos. Natasha:
On today's program, North Carolina Pastor Bruce Frank is joining the crowded Southern Baptist Convention presidential race. Frank was a former leader of the SBC's abuse task force. We'll have details. And, Bishop TD Jakes is mentioned in a lawsuit against music mogul Sean ‘Diddy' Combs—though the lawsuit does not accuse the bishop of wrongdoing. We'll take a look. Also, another Christian college is closing its doors. But first, North Carolina's Pursuit Church announced this week that it fired its lead pastor over sexual misconduct. First: Thank You to all the new subscribers to my Newsletter. I appreciate you. Because we have so many new subscribers, today's newsletter is going to be a bit different. I thought it would be appropriate to provide a bit of background on myself, explain what The Year Of The Opposite is, and let you know what kind of writing you should expect to receive from this newsletter. Reminder: As a reminder, my name is Travis Stoliker and I was one of the Co-Owners of Saddleback BBQ & Slice by Saddleback. I just recently exited and handed off the restaurants to their founder, Matt Gillett. I'm now focused on writing this newsletter. Read this Business Insider article to learn more about the Year Of The Opposite. Who is Travis Stoliker? I'm Travis Stoliker, my journey started at Holt Public Schools, continued through LCC, and culminated at Northwood University. Today, I call Haslett home, enjoying life on Lake Lansing with my wife, Laken, who works for the Edward Lowe Foundation, and our lively 5-year-old son, Lane. I believe deeply in the responsibility of community service. Currently, I serve as a trustee on the Haslett Board of Education and on the board of Ele's Place. My past contributions include the East Lansing Zoning Board of Appeals, East Lansing Info (A citizen journalism non-profit), and the board of the only angel investing organization in the area called the Capital Community Angels. My hobbies include running, pickleball, golf, water skiing, boating, and hockey. My skill in each of these endeavours ranges from decent to downright terrible. Reading and writing are two of my most treasured pastimes. My true passion, however, lies in the business world. Where my friends follow sporting teams, I follow business. “Business is my sport” is a phrase I'm guilty of saying far too often. Business started early for me. When I was about 12 years old, I ran a tiny hockey league and shared a paper route with my best friend, Matt Hill. During Highschool and College I learned a variety of skills by working at D&M Silk Screening, L&L Shoprite, Schneider Sheet Metal, and Big George's Home Appliance Mart. I graduated from LCC with an Associates degree in Applied Sciences, Media Technology (Audio & Video Recording). I worked at WILX as a production assistant where I helped broadcast the 5pm, 6pm and 11pm news. I worked in Master Control and ended up being elected as the UAW Union Steward for my department at WILX. I was told at the time that I was the youngest UAW Union Steward, but I can't confirm if this is true or not. We actually had to strike and successfully got our pay increased to $6.96 per hour. It was at that time that I knew I had to either move to a big city to make more money in this industry, or try a different trade. I decided to try a different trade: Sales. As an aside, I still firmly believe, everyone should have at least one sales job. Sales is a skill that you can use your entire life. I sold refrigerators, dishwashers, and $70,000 42-inch flat screen TV's (Not kidding!) at Big George's Home Appliance Mart and then I learned to sell Television Advertisements at Millenium Digital Media. I won't go into the long details, but I got fired from both positions because one closed and the other got sold. This left me very disillusioned about working for companies. I ended up securing an amazing job at one of the best employers in town, TechSmith. They taught me about everything from marketing to software development. I went from Salesman to Product Manager in a short while. TechSmith provided me a lot of great experiences and memories. My first airplane ride was a flight for TechSmith. The first book that I loved reading, The Tipping Point by Malcolm Gladwell, was for Techsmith. The reason I got a bachelor's degree was because of TechSmith tuition reimbursement. But the biggest thing that TechSmith taught me was the love for learning and growth. When I left the sales team and joined the Camtasia product team, Camtasia was the lowest sales product at TechSmith. In the short time I worked on it with my mentor Troy Stein, Camtasia became the highest sales product in the company that year. Watching that growth was like a drug for me. I loved it. I learned at that moment what I was passionate about. I loved helping companies grow. While at TechSmith, I had an idea for a product called “Project Streamer”. TechSmith didn't want to develop it, so I reached out to my old friend, Matt Hill, who founded Liquid Web. As I recall, around this time, Liquid Web had about 10 employees and maybe a million in revenue. But I could be a bit off on those numbers because it was a long time ago. Liquid Wed ended up developing Project Streamer and this started the professional relationship between me, Matt Hill, and Chris Strandt. Around this same time, I got it into my head that I should grow long hair and a long beard. My appearance got pretty out of control. Bill Hamilton, the founder of TechSmith, didn't like my new look and he asked me to correct my appearance. In an act of youthful arrogance, I refused, and nearly lost my job. To my good fortune, around this same time - Matt Hill was thinking about growing Liquid Web and starting the first sales and marketing efforts at the company. Because of our successful partnership on Project Streamer, Matt asked me if I would join Liquid Web. Liquid Web was quite a bit smaller than TechSmith at the time, and I was nervous about making the change to a smaller less well established company. After serious debate and negotiating my salary over Jager Bomb shots at Harpers, I accepted the position and was excited about the opportunity to grow Liquid Web with Matt and Chris. And I'm sure glad I did. The next ~10 years at Liquid Web were incredible. We were growing revenue every year, building more data centers, and hiring new employees at an insanely fast rate. As I recall, but I could be wrong, I think we were an Inc5000 fastest growing company in America for the next 8 years in a row, which I believe is a pretty rare accomplishment. We grew to 480+ employees, 3 data centers in Lansing, a data center in Amsterdam, one in Arizona, and an office in Ann Arbor. We grew sales to ~$80million in annual recurring revenue and we successfully sold the company to private equity for $224million in 2015. It was an absolutely amazing run and it was incredibly fun. Matt Hill, as the founder and main equity holder, received the vast majority of the money, as he deserved. And I was fortunate because as a phantom equity holder, I received a significant amount of money from the sale. I consider myself very fortunate. In a future post, I will detail how phantom equity works and the advantages/disadvantages. Also in 2015, I was fortunate enough that Matt Gillett asked me to invest capital to help start Saddleback. Many of you already know that story but some of the things I'm most proud of are that we expanded to four profitable locations with presences in Spartan Stadium and the Breslin Center. We launched a line of BBQ Sauces & Rubs that grace the shelves of major retailers. Food Network named Our Rib Sandwich one of the Best Sandwiches in America. Mental Floss Magazine honored us as the Best BBQ in Michigan. We were recognized with awards like the Michigan 50 Companies to Watch, SBDC Small Business of the Year, and the Greater Lansing Business of the Year. But what I'm most proud of is that Saddleback remained profitable for all 8.5 years and our community engagement was a cornerstone of our success. We donated thousands of meals to those in need, cleared student lunch debt at local school districts, assisted during natural disasters, offer a 401k to our employees, and we were among the first companies to try pay transparency.I feel incredibly fortunate to have been a part of some of my favorite organizations in the Lansing area. From School Board, to Ele's Place, from WILX to TechSmith, from to Liquid Web to Saddleback - I feel incredibly blessed to have made small contributions in a diverse set of industries. Life has its interesting moments too. This year to my surprise the local Kiwanis club awarded me their Citizen Of The Year Award. And in 2016, I was humorously named the 2nd best Uber driver in Lansing after completing just one ride. And in 1997, I survived a scary incident when an ice skate cut my throat during a hockey game. (Video Below)This is the bullet point version of who I am focusing mostly on my professional experience. It feels a bit boastful talking about all this and I'm certain that I got some of the dates and details wrong but I made my best effort to be as accurate as possible. I provide this background because I think it's important that you have a greater context about the perspective with which I view the world. Rest assured, this is not the traditional format for these posts. So that leads to the big question: What is The Year Of The Opposite? The Year Of The Opposite was a personal challenge that I set for myself in 2022 to change my life by doing the opposite of what I had done before. In February of 2022, one of my best friends died and two more would die over the next 5 months. It plunged me into a depression that I had never experienced before and one that couldn't seem to escape. So in the spirit of the old quote “The definition of insanity is doing the same thing and expecting different results”. I wanted to try to shake things up, I embarked on a journey of doing the opposite of what I had always done. It was inspired by the Seinfeld episode, The Opposite. If what I was doing wasn't working, doing the opposite should fix it. For example: instead of sleeping in, I'd wake up early and make the bed. I'd start working out, I gave up drinking alcohol, I started playing sports, I grew a mustache - Essentially, I would do the opposite of what I had done before and my hope was that it would reverse my depression. And thankfully, it worked! But it did much more than just cure my depression. The Year Of The Opposite led me to lose 62 pounds, run barefoot for 7 miles, undertake a 14-minute cold plunge in 42-degree water, swim about a mile across a lake, complete a half and full marathon, run 1,000 miles in a year, learn to hold my breath for 2 minutes and 43 seconds, and conquer spicy foods by completing the blazing wings and Hot Ones Challenges. But most importantly, I cured my depression and I reversed several of my health conditions. After about 6 months of doing the opposite, my doctors cleared me to stop taking medications for high blood pressure, cholesterol, and triglycerides. This was a goal that I never thought would be possible. My personal Year Of The Opposite radically and profoundly changed my life in a positive direction. At the conclusion of the first year in March of 2023, I had a decision to make. Should I keep doing the Year Of The Opposite, or should I go back to my old ways? The answer was obvious: On every metric, my life was far better during the Year of The Opposite. I decided that I would keep the opposite going and I needed a new challenge. I decided to launch the Year Of The Opposite Newsletter and Podcast that you are now reading/listening to in hopes that sharing my story might inspire others. I deeply thank you for following, subscribing, listening or reading. It means the world to me. What Should You Expect to Receive in this Newsletter? My writing tends to focus on Technology, Business, Marketing, and interviews with people that I find fascinating. But the biggest thing that I try to focus on is positivity. I try to find good news and positive stories from around the world to share. My goal is to be a living example that it is possible to change your life if you wish to. THE Sales Japan Series by Dale Carnegie Training Tokyo, Japan
If you are a student of sales, then you will know all about SPIN Selling developed by Neil Rackham, based on his 1970s and 1980s research involving 30 researchers who studied 35,000 sales calls in 12 countries. The acronym stands for S- Situation, P- Problem, I-Implication and N-Need Payoff. The concept was not to be just packaging up the details of the solution and then jamming it down the throat of the buyer- the preferred method of most salespeople at that time - but to become a trusted advisor, someone who would act as a consultant to the firm to help them improve their performance. The consultancy part required an analysis of the client's current situation and gaining clarity around what was the problem inhibiting their growth. Rackham's insight was that this wasn't enough to be successful in sales. We know that the human condition leans in favour of pain avoidance more than gain. For example, if I wrote two articles, one titled “How I Made $20 million” and another titled “How I Lost $20 million”, the latter is bound to get more attention than the former. This is where the Implication component of the formula comes in – what will be the downside, if the firm doesn't solve this problem. Drawing out the implication is key, because the easiest decision for any buyer is to do nothing. Keeping the same supplier is easy, making no changes inside the firm is easy, trying to incrementally improve what is already being done is easy. The key to success with the implication question is in how we ask it. It is also the most complex part of the formula. Asking about the client's current situation and what are their problems are relatively straightforward questions. If the implication question is done too aggressively then it will fail. For example, “Aren't you concerned about going bankrupt (or losing market share or running out of cash) if you don't fix this problem, which you told me was holding the firm back?”. Another too strong question would be, “Aren't you worried about your own job security if you cannot overcome this problem?”. Buyers will not react well to what sounds to them like a sad attempt at blackmail. They don't like the hard sell approach in Japan and this will backfire if attempted here. The implication question has to be subtle and considered. For example, “I am sure that over time, you can solve this problem you have outlined for me. I guess the question then is can the organisation afford to wait for that long or is there a greater benefit to making some changes now, to reap more immediate rewards?”. This is a good question because it doesn't say the buyer's company is stupid or that the buyer is stupid or that they are not capable to fixing their own problems. It just raises the issue of time and of course in business time is of the essence, so it is easier to conclude that taking action now is the wiser course. We are still faced with the problem though that although the buyer knows they should act, the inertia drag is so strong they still don't do anything about it and just procrastinate on taking any steps to fix the issue. When we see that this is what is going on in the mind of the buyer, we have to join them there and push them to take a more urgent approach, without tipping the scales too far toward panic. We can now say, “Change is always hard, however we know that progress requires change and there is always a big advantage to be gained over competitors who cannot make any changes. Rivals however may stir and steal a march on us and we don't want that do we? Increasing market share because of internal agility translates into better financial outcomes and quickly justify the changes needed to reap the greater rewards. When we think of it, on balance, doesn't it make sense to take the opportunity presented now, to gain the tangible benefits available?”. We have to drive in a sense of urgency around the decision to buy from us, otherwise they just never get around to making it happen. Japanese buyers in particular are very sensitive to what their competitors are doing and do worry about being outfoxed by their rivals. Certainly questioning skills are an important tool in the salesperson's toolbox, but the implication tool in particular, is one which must be fully mastered. The delivery is key and this requires practice and always remember never practice on the buyer! Clients vary in personality style, so we have to be sensitive to how we communicate with the buyer. Some prefer a more direct approach and others want to have a cup of tea and get to know each other first. Very detailed buyers enjoy data, proof, testimonials, evidence while others find all that boring and prefer the think in big picture terms. The important point is to know who we are talking to and then adjust our delivery to suit the way they prefer to communicate.

If you haven't heard the previous 2 parts of the interview, go back and listen to Parts 1 and 2 first, and be sure to watch these interviews on the Dr. Angela Zechmann channel on YouTube, because it's a video interview and I do show pictures of her along her journey! Cassie started her journey with me at age 32 in December of 2008, when she weighed 340#. Cassie lost the first 100# with my help, and the other 75# came off later. In part 3 of our interview we talk about addiction, about her mantras for staying motivated, about what happens to the loose skin, and a lot more! Episode Highlights: (20:22) Persistence, Determination, and courage. That's been one of my mantras the entire time. Persistence is just showing up every day and doing what you need to do. Determination is no if, and, or but. There is a way to conquer this and the excuses are always going to be there, but your determination is bigger than that if you allow it to be. And courage because it is hard and it takes a lot of courage to show up every day and to put yourself in that place of vulnerability. (21:25) Progress, not perfection. Moment by moment. Don't let one moment ruin your entire day, and figure out how to love yourself enough to do what it takes. (25:56) Here in the United States and everywhere where the American food industry has infiltrated the culture, it is almost impossible to not have the disease of obesity without being very deliberate and diligent about your food. You have to be almost obsessed about your food in order to protect yourself from all the crap that's in it.

If you didn't hear (or watch) last week's podcast, go back and listen to that one first, and be sure to watch it on the Dr. Angela Zechmann channel on YouTube, because it's a video interview and I do show pictures of her along her journey. Cassie started her journey with me at age 32 in December of 2008, when she weighed 340#. In part 2 of our interview we talk about the psychological healing that was necessary. She also talks about an interesting phase when she actually got too thin, and how she discovered what her “perfect weight range” is. Enjoy Part 2 of the interview! Episode Highlights: (12:35) You have to figure out… where is your happy [weight] place, based on what it takes to live there. Because what it took to live at 150# for me was two and a half - three hours in the gym every day. (18:29) It's important to understand that long-term weight loss is going to have some ups and downs. And that's pretty normal. (23:42) I will every day of my life, wake up and make a decision that I'm either going to be victim to it [Obesity] or I'm going to conquer it. (25:41) If you wake up in the morning and you make a choice that's not the best choice … that doesn't mean your day is wrecked. That means you have another opportunity in your next meal to make a better choice. I like to deal in moments and that's something that I learned about addiction, you want to take it moment by moment, not day by day.
For more details on this podcast visit: https://www.journeybeyondweightloss.com/blog/79 Episode 79: How I Lost 175# & Kept It Off, With Cassie Becker, Part 1 This week and the next 2 weeks I have a very special guest - Her name is Cassie and we sat down recently to talk about her weight loss journey. When she started her journey with me it was December of 2008, she was 32 years old and she weighed 340#. Her highest weight was 350# and perhaps more. She lost the first 100# with my help, and the other 75# came off later. It was a dramatic transformation that occurred over the course of many years and Cassie learned a lot about herself along the way! I'm so thrilled that she said yes when I asked her to share her journey with all of you! The interview was an hour and a half long, so I've broken it up into 3 parts, which I'll be releasing over the next 3 weeks. We did a video interview, so I want to recommend that you go over to the Dr Angela Zechmann channel on YouTube to watch this interview, because I do show photos of her along her journey and pictures are worth a thousand words! Episode Highlights: (10:00) I was going to prove to everyone that it didn't matter how big I was, that I was capable and strong, independent, and I could do whatever I wanted to do, regardless of what people saw. And I was very successful at that. (17:50) My kids were tiny. They were four years old and seven years old, and they were kind of like, why can't you have chips with us or popcorn with us or cookies with us? The best explanation is, mommy's allergic to sugar right now. (21:33) Even if you were able to eat perfectly, the lack of sleep and the stress hormones cause your liver to create blood sugar. It's a process called gluconeogenesis. And so your liver is going to make sugar even if your nutrition is perfectly sound. (23:35) So many people think that "As long as I'm working out, I can just eat whatever I want" and that doesn't work. So dialing in that nutrition is the key. If you've got an hour, and your choice is to go to the gym and spend that hour on the treadmill, or to spend an hour going grocery shopping and prepping food, and it's one or the other, you need to do the food.

The world tries to tell us what success and wealth and popularity and beauty and all those things should look like, and by definition therefore, who we should aspire to be. But what if life's not about those outward measures of success at all? BODY BEAUTIFUL Let me start today by letting you in on a little secret, so that you understand where I'm coming from on this whole body-image thing. For most of my adult-life until a few years ago, I hated seeing myself. I hated looking at my face in the mirror, and I hated even more seeing a photo of myself. In fact, as much as possible, I avoided photos. Why? Because I was grossly overweight, and that was something that I was deeply ashamed of. I struggled with my weight all my life, and as someone who pretty much always succeeds at things I turn my hand to, I hated (I mean, I absolutely hated) the fact that I couldn't succeed at looking good. It's a terrible thing, I can tell you, not to want to look at yourself in the mirror. You avoid it studiously, and it eats away at your self-esteem. People would never have guessed it of the apparently bold and confident Berni Dymet, but it was the scourge of my life. Of course, I finally found out what was causing me to be so grossly overweight, and that's something that I share in a free E-booklet called ‘How I Lost 25 kgs.' You can download it from the Resources section of our website, ChristianityWorks.com if you're interested. Thousands already have. But do you see my point? When I come to talk about body image, I'm speaking as someone who has struggled with the body-image thing for most of his life, so this is not a theory lesson; this is someone whose life has been transformed by Christ speaking here. Now before we get rocking and rolling to talk about the emotional side of body image, let me say this: What I am not saying is that we shouldn't worry about our health and our weight. The thing that's causing gross obesity on a global pandemic scale is our addiction to sugar and processed foods. Get rid of those two things out of your diet, get back to what your grandparents and their parents were eating (yes, including bacon, eggs and all those things), and the weight just comes off. Absolutely, get back to natural whole foods, but weight isn't the only thing that ruins our sense of body image. Some people just think they look ugly, ok? Some of us don't fit the stereotypical images of beauty that we see in the glossy magazines and on television. In fact, the reality is that most of us don't, right? But that doesn't stop many people from feeling visually inadequate. Some people have birthmarks or scars, or perhaps you're shorter than you'd like to be, or taller than you want to be, or you wish your hair was a different colour or those wrinkles would just go away. There's any number of things that we fret about when it comes to body image, and for many people, it simply ruins their lives. Am I right? So, where do we go with this? If you're someone whose body image is ruining their life, do you want to be set free from that (I mean, completely, totally and utterly set free from that)? Then stick with me because that's what we're going to be doing right now: Not because I happen to have anything profound to say, but because God does, and first up, this is what He has to say about body-image. Are you ready? This comes from a time when the prophet Samuel was sent by God to find a new king to replace King Saul of Israel, who'd gone off the rails. Have a listen (1 Samuel 16:1-13): The LORD said to Samuel, ‘How long are you going to grieve Saul? I have rejected him from being king over Israel, so fill your horn with oil and set out. I will send you to Jesse the Bethlehemite, for I have provided for Myself a king among his sons.' So, Samuel did what the LORD commanded and he came to Bethlehem, and sanctified Jesse and his sons and invited them to the sacrifice. When they came, he looked on Eliab and thought, ‘Surely the LORD's anointed is now before me.' But the LORD said to Samuel, ‘Do not look on his appearance or on the height of his stature, because I have rejected him. For the LORD does not see as mortals see; they look on the outward appearance, but the LORD looks on the heart.' Then Jesse called Abinadab and made him pass before Samuel. He said, ‘Neither has the LORD chosen this one.' Then Jesse made Shammah pass by, and he said, ‘Neither has the LORD chosen this one.' Jesse made seven of his sons pass before Samuel, and Samuel said to Jesse, ‘The LORD has not chosen any of these.' Samuel said to Jesse, ‘Are all your sons here?' And he said, ‘There remains yet the youngest son, but he is out keeping the sheep.' And Samuel said to Jesse, ‘Send and bring him, for we will not sit down until he comes.' He sent and brought him. Now he was ruddy and had beautiful eyes and was handsome, and the LORD said, ‘Rise and anoint him, for this is the one.' Then Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the presence of his brothers, and the Spirit of the LORD came mightily upon David from that day forward. Samuel then set out and went to Ramah. Now that's a profound story of how God chose David, who turned out to be the greatest king that Israel ever had, and notice that David was the runt of the litter. He was the little one, considered so unlikely that his father didn't even put him before the prophet. Samuel thought, ‘Oh, number one son. You know – the tall, the good-looking one … That's the one that's going to be king', but God said to the prophet, ‘Do not look upon his outward appearance or on the height of his stature because I have rejected him. For the LORD does not see as mortals see; they look on the outward appearance, but the LORD looks on the heart.' Listen to me. God doesn't give two hoots about your physical stature. That's the last thing He's interested in! What He's interested in is who you are – your heart, and if that's the most precious thing in God's sight, isn't it time to ditch this whole body-image inadequacy thing that you've been going on about? Well? What you look like is, by and large, God's sovereign choice. Other than perhaps your weight and a few cosmetic things, the rest is completely out of your control; what matters is who you are – your sense of humour; your heart; your passions; the gifts God's given you. If that matters most to God, shouldn't that be what matters most to you? DRESS TO IMPRESS I haven't had that many job-interviews in my life. In fact, I've only really had two of them, but the first one is the one that I remember most. It was a daylong selection board they called it, in front of some generals and colonels who were selecting candidates to train as officers in the Australian army. There were about twenty of us young men there vying for contention, and about six or seven of these senior officers. They spent the whole day putting us through the hoops. There were group-sessions where we were asked questions. We each had to get up and give an impromptu speech. There was an obstacle course that we had to traverse, with problems to solve along the way … All sorts of different things. It was an exhausting day, I can tell you, and the whole time, you were really trying to impress these guys because you wanted to be selected to train as an officer. The pressure was intense. Out of the twenty of us, just three or four made it through. I happened to be one of them, and then for the next four years at the Royal Military College, Duntroon, we were constantly being assessed. Every time you interacted with one of the military or academic staff, they were assessing you and constantly filling in these pink slips (“OQ9's”, they were called) that were entered into a computer system. Almost without notice, a fellow officer/cadet would be plucked from a class, and discharged because they hadn't measured up. We started off with 148 young men in our class, and yet only 61 of us graduated 4 years later – I by the skin of my teeth, because I had failed the cross-country run by a few seconds in my final year. It seems to be the way of the world, doesn't it? We're constantly under the microscope; constantly being assessed and evaluated in the workplace, in social settings, on the sporting fields … It's almost like we've been conditioned to compete, and in a competitive environment, if you want to succeed, you have to impress other people. I remember a publisher telling me that if I wanted to succeed at the book-writing game, I'd have to become a shameless self-promoter. That's terrible, isn't it? And self-promotion, having your own PR-machine to tell other people how good you are, seems to be the order of the day. We dress to impress. But what I've discovered is that all this competition makes you insecure, and the shameless self-promotion that many people carry on with is simply a mask behind which they hide in deep insecurity. You've been there; I've been there, and it's simply no way to live your life. We're in the middle of a series of messages called "So … How's Your Self-Image Looking", and the reason that we're chatting about this whole self-promotion thing today is that for many people, it's white-anting their sense of self. God actually has something very specific to say on this because He knows that it's no way to live your life, hiding behind that mask of insecurity. If who you are on the outside is different from who you are on the inside, you end up feeling like you're being torn apart. You end up feeling that you have to spend your whole life pretending; impressing other people; dancing to their tune; marching to the beat of their drum. You end up feeling like a fraud, with a fear that someone's going to catch you out – that they'll discover that really, you aren't anywhere near as good as they think you are. I hope you can tell that I'm speaking first-hand here, because this is very much how I lived my life before Jesus set me free. Have a listen to these two Scriptures from God's Word. 1 Samuel 2:3: Talk no more so very proudly; let no arrogance come from your mouth, for the LORD is a God of knowledge, and by Him actions are weighed. And also Proverbs 27:1-2: Do not boast about tomorrow, for you do not know what a day may bring. Let another praise you, and not your own mouth; a stranger, and not your own lips. What God's saying is, stop boasting. Stop being so full of yourself, because arrogance is foolish. God is a God of knowledge. He knows what you're on about. He sees through all of that façade and all that rubbish, and while some people might be intimidated by pride and arrogance, most of them (like God) can see straight through it. Who cares what you say about how good you are, or what you can do, or what you've achieved, or what you're going to do? Self-praise is pretty much worthless. In fact, it has negative value in most people's eyes, including in God's eyes. So much better to just get out there and do good, and let someone else praise you; not your own mouth, a stranger even; not your own lips. When I was in the army as an officer, each year, we had a formal confidential report written on each one of us. There were two types of officers: Those who set out to impress their superiors so that they'd get a good annual confidential report, and those who just got on and did good and led their soldiers and honoured their seniors, and didn't think at all about their annual report, and it was the latter (not the former) group that I wanted to follow into battle. It was the latter (not the former) who we spoke well of. You see self-promotion is ugly. It's ugly on the outside to those who receive it, and it's ugly on the inside because it feeds a deep insecurity and makes you feel even more insecure. If you're someone who constantly worries about what other people think of you, just stop it! Stop it. It ain't worth it, and you can never please them all. Just get on; do good; honour God. Let the rest take care of itself. Sometimes people will love you; sometimes people will criticise you – who cares? And even more to the point, let God take care of it for you. 1 Peter 5:5-6: God opposes the proud, but He gives grace to the humble. Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, so that He may exalt you in due time. See, the bottom line is this: Self-promotion is nothing; nothing compared to God-promotion. Listen. "Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, so that He may exalt you in due time"! When we humble ourselves, we start to discover a deep security in Christ, and we end up reaping the benefits of His promotion in due time. STOP COMPARING Who was it, during your teenaged years that you compared yourself to? Most of us, we had a few people back then to whom we looked as the ideal image. First up, there was probably a peer. If you're a male, it was another boy; if you're a female, it was another girl … It was that one person that you wished you could be like then … As good-looking; as well-liked; as smart; as athletic. Whatever it is that you admired about them and the life that they had, it gnawed away at you on the inside that you weren't as blessed in that department as they were. If you're a girl, probably what you envied was that other girl‘s appearance. If you're a boy, probably what you envied was that other boy's popularity – the fact that everyone seemed to listen to him. He was the leader of the pack, and you were just … well, you. At another level, there was probably an adult that you wished and dreamed you would grow up to be like. Perhaps it was a movie star, or a sporting star, or somebody famous that you dreamed that one day you'd be like them. I'm sure all that brings back some memories for you: A few things that you haven't thought about for a very, very long time, or perhaps you're still thinking about them. Perhaps you're still comparing yourself with other people, wondering why it is that you never quite seem to measure up to the ideal person that you see in them. You find yourself comparing your marriage to your best friend's marriage, thinking: ‘Why can't my wife or my husband be as passionately in-love with me as they are?' Or perhaps that other person at work, who seems to be so articulate and well liked. Whenever someone needs something, they always go to that person instead of coming to you. So why do we do that? What's the matter with us that we're constantly comparing ourselves to other people? Well in part, it comes naturally in a sense and to some extent, some comparison isn't a bad thing. In fact, when you think about it, it's by comparing ourselves that we learn. We compare ourselves to our parents and we learn from them. We pick up their good habits and sometimes, we pick up their bad habits too. And when we're grown-up, I mean, I had a mentor in the workplace for over twenty years – a man called Graham, a couple of decades older than me, and I saw how he operated and the results that he achieved by operating that way, and I modelled myself on him because I liked the results he was getting. Now that's not a bad thing at all, but there's an unhealthy level of comparison that often goes on: when we just want to cherry-pick the good things that other people have in their lives, as though they don't have any bad things in their lives. Of course that's completely unrealistic because when we cherry-pick the good things and ignore the bad things, what we're going to do is we're going to construct an ideal image that we aspire to, which is totally unrealistic – an image that we can never achieve, and that feeds our insecurity and robs us of our identity. When you think about it, those comparisons are about wanting to be what the other person is, or have what the other person has. So destructive is this that the Ten Commandments include a commandment specifically about this very thing. It's the last commandment, number ten. Have a listen (Exodus 20:17): You shall not covet your neighbour's house. You shall not covet your neighbour's wife, or male or female slave, or ox or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbour. Why? Because when we covet, when we want the thing that our neighbour has, it causes us to do one of two things: Either we do the wrong thing and we go and take it (which is what adultery is all about; that's what theft's all about), or we don't take it, but the desire eats away at us like a cancer, and we tell ourselves that we're not complete without having it. We can't enjoy our lives without it. Unless we have that one thing that the next guy has, we can never live a life full and contented and happy. What a load of malarkey! There are some things that you and I will never have; yet the desire for those things can end up ruining your life. Some people desire great wealth, but they can't attain it. That's why God says in His Word (Hebrews 6:10): The love of money is the root of all kinds of evil, and in their eagerness to be rich, some have wandered away from their faith and pierced themselves with many pains. Notice it's not money which is the root of all evil; it's the love of money; it's the desire for money; it's coveting wealth that becomes the root of all evil, and ends up piercing us with many pains. It's true. We'll talk about that more another time, but there's an alternative, and here it is. Hebrews 13:5: Keep your lives free from the love of money, and be content with what you have, for He has said, ‘I will never leave you nor forsake you'. And that's the key: Contentment. Have a look around, and consider all the good things that God's already given you: Your health, your life, the air that you breathe, the roof over your head, the food you're eating, your family … Just do a stocktake of all that you have … Oh and by the way, the gift of eternal life, through the sacrifice of Jesus Christ – a completely new life, through His resurrection … Come on. Add up all the good things that you already have. It's amazing, isn't it, how blessed you are. Is it perfect? Is your family perfect? Are your circumstances perfect? No, of course they aren't. They were never meant to be perfect, but the richness of God's blessing is utterly mind-blowing. So here's the rub: Be content with what you have. Be content with who you are. Be content with your lots in life. Give God thanks for that. Keep blessing Him and praising Him and worshipping Him and living for Him, and all of a sudden, all those stupid ridiculous things that you covet, all those crazy comparisons will simply go away. They'll pale into insignificance because all of a sudden, you discover how rich you already are in Jesus Christ. Come on … what is it in your life that's eating away at your self-image? Is it really worth it, or is it time to focus on the good things that God's already given you? And that's the key, you know. We just can't miraculously all of a sudden overcome our insecurities; it doesn't work that way. If we could, we would; but we can't, so we don't. They just don't seem to go away on their own, these insecurities. That's where thanksgiving comes in. The Bible is packed full of exhortations for us to be thankful, and for good reason. 1 Thessalonians 5:18: Give thanks in all circumstances, for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you. Psalm 107:1: Give thanks to the LORD, for He is good, for His steadfast love endures forever. Psalm 50:14: Offer God a sacrifice of thanksgiving, and perform your vows to the Most High. On and on … we're called to thank God for all the good things, and let me tell you when we do that, He changes us. He takes away that gnawing sense of inadequacy that comes from these silly comparisons, and the terrible coveting and jealousy that He tells us not to have, and He replaces it with an overwhelming sense of joy, irrespective (let me say) of our circumstances; even when things are going against us, in fact especially when things are going against us. Let me be blunt here: If you're desiring to have something you can't have, or to be someone you can't be, it's going to be ruining your life. It's giving you a distorted self-image, and God's command to you is clear: Stop it! Just don't do it anymore. Instead, praise God and give thanks, and let Him change you. You see, God's already made provision for your deliverance and healing from this terrible disease through the simple and utterly delightful habit of giving thanks to Him. The only question is, what exactly are you waiting for?

One of the things I learned early on in my 145 lb. weight loss journey is that if I don't know my why, it's much harder to bounce back onto the right path when we've gone off the rails for whatever reason. I used to teach men and women in the prison system how to find their why, and I'm telling you what, nothing made my heart smile more than when you saw the light bulb come on in their eyes and they realized they still had a reason to keep going. I would see grown men full of tattoos weep. Those are some of the most cherished moments in my career. But finding our why isn't just reserved for people in prison, corporate CEO's, or super-focused high achievers. No, finding our why is critical for all of us, especially as we continue on the journey of weight loss and health and finding lasting freedom. My hope for you is that by the end of this episode, you're going to cling to your why like your life depends on it, because your life might just really depend on it. “You lose your way when you lose your why.” Those are nine of the most powerful words I've ever heard, spoken by my friend Gail Hyatt. Have you ever stopped long enough to ask yourself why? And not the why you might be thinking I'm referring to. Not “Why did I gain all the weight back that I lost?” Not “Why can't I get my crap together when it comes to getting healthy?” Not “Why can't I be like those other moms that can do all the things?” Not “Why am I still single? Those are important questions to ask at the right time, but those aren't the why questions I'm talking about. We're going to process through some more empowering why questions in today's episode. You don't want to miss it. I may shed a tear a or two. So, click here to listen and let's figure out your why together. This week's #MindsetMonday talks about setting measurable goals that we can see over time and how we separate those goals into big, medium, and small goals to reach that bigger goal. Couros shares a story from Will Smith where he talks about building a brick wall little by little - the lesson learned from building a wall by laying brick after brick is that when we look at the bigger goal, we do not always see the smaller goals that had to be achieved in order to make that bigger goal possible. Couros talks about his compelling reason for losing weight and how he set a tangible goal in this episode of #MindsetMonday. This Life We Live in the Body: A Podcast about Gospel Centered Weight Loss
Jesus can help you lose weight. It seems almost crass to say, doesn't it? The conversation about losing weight seems more at home on the cover of a grocery store check out lane magazine…. (“Shed Those Extra Pounds Before Swimsuit Season!” “Tackle Stubborn Belly Fat!” “How I Lost 100 Pounds While Never Skipping Dessert!”) …than it does in the halls of a church or the pages of your Bible Study. I have to say that this is how I thought about weight loss for most of my adult life. I never came right out and said it, but implicitly I internalized: God doesn't really care about this part of my life. He isn't concerned with my desire to fit into a smaller jean size…in fact it's vain and shallow even to think about! One problem with that line of thinking, though, is that it pushed me to seek ungodly (and often unsuccessful) solutions to my weight problem. The bigger problem with this line of thinking, though, is this: It's not true. Jose Lambiert- Trump & Jeffrey Epstein Palm Beach Pals Epstein Jose Lambiert is a Palm Beach private investigator and gossip columnist. He travels in the same circles as Trump and Epstein and been a valuable source of information. 6 PM Joe Lauria "How I Lost " by Hillary ClintonJudging by the stance of the leadership of the Democratic Party and much of the media, Hillary Clinton's devastating loss in the presidential election of November 2016 was all the fault of pernicious Russian leaks, unwarranted FBI investigations and a skewed electoral college. Rarely blamed was the party's decision to run a deeply unpopular candidate on an uninspiring platform. At a time of widespread dissatisfaction with business-as-usual politics, the Democrats chose to field a quintessential insider. Her campaign dwelt little on policies, focusing overwhelmingly on the personality of her opponent. That this strategy was a failure is an understatement. Losing an election to someone with as little competence or support from his own party as Donald Trump marked an extraordinary fiasco. The refusal of the Democratic leadership to identify the real reasons for their defeat is not just a problem of history. If Democrats persevere with a politics that prioritizes well-off professionals rather than ordinary Americans, they will leave the field open to right wing populism for many years to come. Drawing on the WikiLeaks releases of Clinton's talks at Goldman Sachs and the e mails of her campaign chief John Podesta, as well as key passages from her public speeches, How I Lost By Hillary Clinton also includes extensive commentary by award-winning journalist Joe Lauria, and a foreword by Julian Assange, editor-in-chief of WikiLeaks. It provides, in the words of the Democratic candidate and her close associates, a riveting, unsparing picture of the disastrous campaign that delivered America to President Trump, and a stark warning of a mistake that must not be repeated. "Clinton lost the 2016 election, Trump didn't win it. How I Lost by Hillary Clinton is a vital rallying call against the type of triangulating politics that may defeat Trump in 2020, but will never defeat Trumpism." -Bhaskar Sunkara, editor, JacobinThis show is part of the Spreaker Prime Network, if you are interested in advertising on this podcast, contact us at https://www.spreaker.com/show/1198501/advertisement
Noah Kagan was fired from Facebook. He was employee #30. "I think they made the right decision to fire me," he said. "One of the big realizations I've had in the past few years is that people need to stop fighting their natural skill. My sweet spot is getting things going. My sweet spot is promoting products I love. That was the lesson learned. What I was strong at was not what Facebook needed anymore." He wrote about it in his free ebook "How I Lost 170 Million Dollars: My Time as #30 at Facebook". I asked him "how does the average person know what their strong at?" That's what we talk about in this interview. Today, Noah is the CEO of sumo.com, appsumo.com and kingsumo.com. I use these sites to grow and market my business. He also hosts a great podcast, "Noah Kagan Presents" and writes for his blog, okdork.com. 3 min - Noah first came on my podcast 2 years ago. He gave me a challenge: go to a coffee shop and ask for 10% off. The cashier was confused. "You want what?" "10% off," I said. And I didn't give a reason either. My face was emotionless. She asked her Dad. "We don't do that," he said. I could feel myself about to throw up. I was going against the normal social protocol. And endangering my life. Any time you step out of your comfort zone and risk being thrown out of the tribe, it signals a reaction in your brain: fear. But now it's much easier. I do challengers almost everyday. Noah does too. And he shared them on his podcast "Noah Kagan Presents." We talk about more challenges you can do in this interview. 6 min - "I've been experimenting with habits and figuring out how to focus on the essentials," Noah said. "That's where I'm really starting to explore." He gave me an example. "Look at your phone right now. What apps have you not used in the last 6 months? Delete them." He does this with relationships, business, everything. "It helps me realize what really matters," he said. And appreciate more of the people and places and things he interacts with. I did a similar thing about a year ago, but in a much more macro level. I got rid of everything I owned. Except 15 items. Noah asked me what I miss. "Nothing," I said. I lied (by accident). A few special things came to mind. But, more importantly, it's been a year and I haven't replaced it rebought anything I threw away. 9 min - After I got rid of 40 years worth of stuff, I had nowhere to live, so I started another experiment. I threw myself at the mercy of my friends... 10 min - Noah says he doesn't want to hate his week so he did a week of nothing. "I had no meetings, I had no one to be around and I was alone for a week." He started at point zero. And added back the essentials. "What things really matter in my life? What places? What people?" 11 min - I told Noah what I learned from getting rid of all my belongings... 13 min - "People think of dieting only in health, but can you have a diet in friendships? Look at all the things that are weighing on you," Noah said, "and start having a diet." 16 min - Noah was the 30th employee at Facebook. "Why were you fired?" I asked. He told me about the guy who fired him. "He's rich," he said. "But I think they made the right decision to fire me. One of the big realizations I've had in the past few years is people need to stop fighting their natural skill. I call it their sweet spot and my sweet spot is starting out." Facebook didn't need that skill anymore. So they got rid of him. I wanted to know how the average person finds out what their sweet spot is... 19 min - Noah recommends trying these two strategies to find what you're really good at. 24 min - I tell Noah one of my signature jokes from my stand up comedy... 27 min - Noah told me about his mentor, Jonathan Coon. He founded 1-800-Contacts and funded the movie Napoleon Dynamite. He has a strategy to "reduce friction in his life." He goes to the same restaurants and overtips...
