Today's episode is a special one, because I'm celebrating my 44th birthday right after this releases!Honestly…it still feels unbelievable that I'm in my 40s, and these last few years have been interesting (to say the least)!Life has thrown me some curveballs in 2025, from dealing with high blood pressure and sickness at the beginning of the year, to navigating the wild, WILD west that is perimenopause. Even with all of this going on, I'm choosing to embrace the chaos and focusing on what I CAN control. I have no problem pivoting when I need to, and you shouldn't, either!Moving forward, I plan to be super intentional and present with my body and health, and what I truly need. I'm leaning into this season of experimentation, and while growing older definitely *isn't* glamorous, I'm learning that it's OKAY to not have it all figured out!I'm incredibly honored that you're here - your support means the WORLD to me. I'm sooo pumped for what's ahead for my podcast, business, and more over the next year, and I can't wait to take you on the journey with me!!In this episode, we cover:An update on my recent health journey & high blood pressureWhy you can pivot or adjust anytime, instead of waiting for a special occasionEmbracing the chaos & uncertainty of life + rolling with the punchesChoosing to be intentional & present with my body and needsPrioritizing my nutrition even more in this stage of lifeMy focus for my training & workouts moving forwardExciting updates with my business & podcast growthLinks/Resources:Join IT GIRL Community Membership Join FIT CLUB, my monthly membership with workouts you can do at home or the gymPRIVATE COACHING is my 1:1 program (choose 3 or 6 month option)Connect with me on Instagram @kristycastillofit and @unfuckyourfitnesspodcast so we can keep this conversation going-be sure to tag me in your posts and stories!Join my FREE Facebook group, Unf*ck Your FitnessClick HERE for my favorite fitness & life things!Send me a text with episode ideas or just to say hi! Doubting Thomas and the Power of BeliefIn this special Easter Sunday episode, Tata and I delve into the story of Doubting Thomas, recorded against the backdrop of a beautiful sunrise by the riverbank. We explore the resurrection of Jesus, the significance of belief in the absence of physical evidence, and the importance of faith in times of doubt. The conversation highlights key biblical moments, including Thomas's journey from doubt to belief, and provides encouragement for those navigating their own spiritual questions. I want to take this opportunity to talk about a big decision we made recently to shut down and archive our 10,000-member STC Facebook group. In this session, I intend to pull back the curtain and give an authentic glimpse into the thought process and motives behind this move. In early August, about a month ago, we made this decision concerning our Facebook group that has been in existence since 2015. I never expected the group to grow as it did, and it required a great deal of time and energy to maintain the group at a high level of engagement. The reality is that decisions like this are multi-layered and complex. Join me in this episode as I discuss the factors in this decision. You'll Learn:The six major considerations in making this decision:The impending season of caregiving for aging parents and the role of business in my family lifeMy original goal for STC and my changing definition of success (“Do I want the successful version of this?”)The sustainable cadence and level of social engagement I've found with the STC podcast, YouTube, and the STC newsletterManaging a large Facebook community takes a lot of emotional bandwidth and leadership. The realization that I can't be everywhere on social media and need to “do less but in a better way”My manageable strategy and goals for social media posts on discovery platforms and relationship-deepening platformsI'm still alive, well, and active on social media! Six months ago, I had my most profound and impactful psychedelic experience yet. I smoked 5-MeO-DMT, left my body, somatically released stuck energy, and experienced the infinite love of the universe. This experience set me on an integration journey that has up-levelled my life in ways I couldn't have imagined. In this episode, I'm excited to share the details of my integration journey over these past six months. While there have been many ups and downs, the overall impact on my life and energy has been immensely positive.Throughout this episode, I'm highlighting that this very powerful medicine isn't just about the psychedelic experience itself but also about the integration process that follows. 5-MeO-DMT "set me straight" by opening me to unconditional love and regulating my nervous system. The energy in my heart is flowing freely into my work and has even empowered my relationship with money. This is just the tip of the iceberg, as I am sharing eight tangible ways my life has changed as a result of my 5-Meo-DMT experience at Enfold Institute. Today's episode begins with a decision to book plane tickets to California over my birthday and stay with some friends who were going through a medical emergency. They needed an extra hand with day-to-day things: think cooking, laundry, and walking their dog. Now, I'm not a big birthday person (never have been). At a certain point in my life, I probably would have been thrilled to be alone on my birthday. Even though society says I should need “everyone” to text me and call me and throw me a big party and do all these things. So why is it that I found myself alone at the beach in tears with such an overwhelming sense of gratitude?Tune in to hear more of how this story unfolded, including why we need a “web” of people around us for support and assurance, and the magic of creating filters to decide where you're investing your energy.Let today be the first day of your little, consistent, actions. In this episode you'll hear about:Having solid support systems that can inspire us to take risks, believe in ourselves, get outside of our comfort zones, and bring our wildest dreams to lifeMy messy process of how I went from feeling so lonely in a room full of people to feeling supported, starting with a set of reflection questions you can ask yourself to get really intentional about your existing relationshipsTurning the dial up on what's working well in your current friendships. How can you lean in more and take it to the next level? The importance of setting boundaries or even letting go of friendships that are no longer serving us - but not letting that energy detract from focusing on what we want to add to our life with friendsA simple task you can try to build intentional connection that involves just 5 minutes of space on your calendar each day (or 30 minutes once per week)Having a “mental Rolodex” of hundreds or thousands of small moments. This alone will bring you the confidence to tell your friends when you need them. Having a support system is beautifulResources & LinksLike what you hear? Have you ever wondered about life coaching? What it is and what it can offer you? If you answered yes to either of those questions then this episode is for you! On today's show, I'm opening the curtains and giving you a sneak peek inside Wife Teacher Mommy life coaching. I'm talking with Chrissy all about life coaching and how we can help you as your teacher life coaches inside the Club! Chrissy Nichols has been teaching for over twenty years in both independent and public schools in the US and Europe. She is the founder of the coaching group The Chrissy Concept which serves smart, dynamic teachers who want to feel better about their lives and relationships at school. Chrissy specializes in helping teachers who feel overwhelmed and burned-out with tools to master time and improve any challenging relationship. Throughout the episode, Chrissy and I explain what it means to be a life coach, particularly if you're a member of the club or are attending our upcoming Educate and Rejuvenate event. Within life coaching, there are so many different platforms to get coaching and surround yourself with the community. We also dive further into the role of the coach versus the role of the participant, which actually might surprise you! Part of the coach's role is to give practical and real tools for you to apply to your life, and also asking questions - lots of questions! Another positive component to this feature within the club is the community of people. Everyone in there is looking for something, whether it's the same thing or something completely different. However, the environment is supportive of others and nurturing that ultimately helps you feel safe and welcomed. On the fence about joining the Wife Teacher Mommy Club or showing up for a live life coaching call? I'm not sure if you're like me, but I am a perfectionist, which means I constantly have to battle the pull to be the “perfect” Christian, wife, mother, and friend. After having two kids, I felt overwhelmed by trying to make every meal from scratch, attempt to have every closet organized, and find time to talk to every friend. (Not to mention, getting ready every. Single. Day) It was at that moment that God started speaking to my heart through His word.“If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God. Set your affection on things ABOVE, not on things on the earth . . . and let the PEACE of God rule in your hearts, to the which also ye are called in one body; and be ye thankful . . .”COLOSSIANS 3:1–2 (emphasis added)I identified my priorities in lifeMy relationship with Jesus is the most important thing to me. I will always give it 100%, because this changes my attitude and my spirit throughout each day. He is my life-giver. Quality time with my husband is so vital in a marriage. I choose to make time each day to connect, show love, and share our hearts. He is my encourager in everything I do. Quality time with our children. I want to spend time learning more about them, showing them affection, and teaching them more about Jesus.I listed out the different ways I can keep these three areas my priorities, and this is where I give 100% every single day.In this season of my life, I have found I have to balance everything else that is pulling for my time and energy, and I realize every season might look different for each person. But for me, this is what balance looks like right now . . .I absolutely love to cook, and I just have to remind myself that it's ok to add a can of green beans as a side, and a premixed salad. (Ya know, or even that box of Kraft Mac-n-cheese)! I'm not always going to be able to make a gourmet dinner, and I'm ok with that. I'm gonna confess also that if you open the closet doors, you might gasp, because it is a little bit of a disarray, but the kids always have clean clothes and I don't get in a tizzy when it's not organized and labeled. If you've ever actually met us in person, you could vouch for the fact that our kids aren't dressed in “style” or magazine worthy — by any stretch of the word. I usually let them choose their own outfits, because they find so much joy in that, and I know they are gonna play so hard outdoors, that everything is likely to have a coat of mud on it by nightfall. I don't stress over their appearance, because I realize it really isn't that important. My kids have also talked, walked, and potty trained at different ages, (I admit I am still attempting to potty train my 3-1/2 year old). I realize they are all different, with completely different personalities, and I don't get worked up if they don't meet a certain standard at a certain time.I want to do my very best. I want to cook dinners each night. I want my house to be tidy . . . but there is a balance to everything I am doing right now. I have to CHOOSE to emphasize my priorities, and just do my best in every other area. From my own experience, I have found freedom, joy, and contentment in balance. If you're anything like me, I encourage you to list your priorities and then find your balance in other areas.Lots of love,Erin#Podcast #Overwhelmed #SpeakLife #Family #Christian #Balance

Are you currently wishing for something better than what you have right now? If you don't feel satisfied with your life, if you're feeling like there's something more for you, and you're always trying to figure out what the next big thing is – listen to this episode. Because future tripping is one of the most miserable trips you can go on. As I mentioned in the episode on Tuesday with Michelle Rios, achievers (like me and Michelle...and possibly you?) tend to find ourselves constantly seeking, striving, and wanting for the next best thing. This can lead us to being incredibly determined and motivated people – and to people who are never satisfied with the life they're living. So, how do we fix this? The answer is pretty simple, though I'll admit it's not easy for any high-functioning achiever or perfectionist to accomplish: Instead of always looking down the road for the next extraordinary thing to come our way, you have to feel the extraordinary happening right now. Despite your hardships, despite your challenges, despite Kevin who won't stop heating up salmon in the break room microwave or Kari who clips her fingernails at 2:30 pm every Tuesday afternoon and the sound is so jarring you could punch a nun, your life is full of magic. Spectacular wonders are occurring inside and around you at every waking moment. Truly. There is nothing bleh about life. You feel bleh because your awareness is not in the spectacular, it's in the wanting. So live the extraordinary life you're living. Like, really live it. Breathe it. Feel it. Taste it. Savor it.The big life secret every future tripper is looking for is to simply allow yourself to feel the powerful magic that is in your life right now. IListen to this episode to learn:Why actively loving your life right now (even if you don't feel like you love it) is the ticket to the future you wantHow to start having fun, even in a job you hateWhy your enthusiasm is your superpower, and how to use itHow to really feel into the present moment so you can magnetize more joyful moments into your lifeMy two affirmations from this episode (feel free to steal them!):When I choose the fun, the fun chooses meMoney flows to me easily when I'm having funYour homework:As mentioned in the episode, I would love to hear what fun thing you saw, did, or experience(d) today. The path of sensual reclamation is a heroine's journey. It's not for the timid. When we get in touch with and begin to embody our full Goddess essence, things shift. Sometimes massively.I'd like to say that the path of reclaiming our sensuality and pleasure is an easeful flowing process but for all women I know it's not. It's deep work. And deep play. Doing this work will bring you more ease, flow and so much more, but there is a price of admission. We have to be willing to take a stand and really show up for our inner feminine in a world that's determined to shut Her down. This work requires raw honesty, courage and levels vulnerability that can be really uncomfortable. It asks us to keep our promises to ourselves and create boundaries in ways we probably haven't before. We may question if we have what it takes. We do. When we decide. When we decide to claim our pleasure we are in our true power and cosmically supported. As the old saying goes; "Venus favors the bold." -OvidClaiming our inner Venus will shake things up.I like to see it as shaking things up to wake things up.When I started this journey I had no idea where it would take me.To be honest, in many ways I still don't. It's the joyful and beautiful unfolding mystery of it all that keeps me in awe.And keeps me on this path.In today's episode I share a bit about the specifics of my personal journey; what that initially looked like for me as a busy mom of three young boys. I also share how this circuitous journey transformed my marriage and laid the foundations for my work and the framework I use with my clients. I riff on:How this work elevates those around us or they fall offEmbracing the unknown of the adventureThe big pleasure reframe; some pleasure myths I needed to bustHow I created more safety in my systemHow I claimed my responsibility for my pleasure; taking the reigns How I made space for pleasure in my lifeMy bathtub templeThe magic of early morning practiceDesire clarity & emotional empowerment"Rage is passion without a place to play""Under every complaint is a desire"How my Inner Bitch became my BFFThe power of embodied desireSensual & sexual embodiment practices as a meditationHow we need to strengthen our nervous systemEmbracing our emotionsEmbodying the love that we areSpeaking my desires from my feminineHow all of this impacted my marriageWant to dive deeper?Learn more about The Vital Goddess MastermindBook your free Pleasure Queen Activation SessionJoin my free breathwork membership; Shakti Core Breathwork Journeys

Note: My guest in this episode, Dr. Earle Labor, died on September 15 at the age of 94. Earle was the world's foremost authority on one of the Art of Manliness' guiding inspirations and lights: Jack London. Earle dedicated his career to London scholarship and his work was pivotal in turning London's literature into a subject of serious study. Earle taught the very first undergraduate and graduate courses devoted to London and penned a hundred articles and ten books about him.Earle not only admired London's devotion to what the author called "the true spirit of romance and adventure," he sought that spirit in his own life. As an undergraduate, Earle started the first weightlifting course at Southern Methodist University and he coached and lifted the SMU team to victory in the 1948 Dallas Open Championships. After college, he and a buddy took an epic road trip, where they did farm work and entered boxing matches to work their way from Texas to Canada. And he served in the U.S. Navy and spent time on a destroyer.I had the privilege of interviewing Earle three times for the AoM podcast. The last time in January 2020, my son and I drove to Earle's home in Shreveport, LA to speak with him in person. To mark Earle's passing, please enjoy this rebroadcast of that conversation. The literature of Jack London has long been given the short shrift by scholars. They say he wrote some good dog stories for boys, but beyond that didn't showcase any literary genius or high-level craftsmanship. Well, my guest today begs to differ with this assessment. His name is Earle Labor. He's the preeminent Jack London scholar and 91 years young. I've had Earle on the podcast two previous times: the first to discuss his landmark Jack London biography, and the second to discuss his own memoir, The Far Music. For this episode, I drove down to Earle's home in Shreveport, Louisiana to talk to Earle about the overlooked literary genius of Jack London and the big themes that London wrote about in his novels and short stories. We begin our discussion with Earle's story of how he became a Jack London scholar and why London's work was historically neglected by academics. We then dig into London's literary themes by first discussing how he used the Klondike as a symbolic proving ground for men and how success in this wilderness depended on one's ability to mold oneself to Jack's "Northland Code." Earle uses excerpts from my favorite London story, "In A Far Country," as well as "To Build a Fire" and The Call of the Wild, to showcase the tenets of this code, and well as London's literary artistry. Earle then explains how London shifted his themes later in his career with his agrarian writing, how his wife Charmian changed his perception of real women and his female characters, and the influence that psychiatrist Carl Jung had on London's last works.Consider this episode a masterclass on the literature of Jack London.Resources Related to the EpisodeEarl's biography of Jack LondonMy first interview with Earle about Jack's epic lifeMy second interview with Earle about "The Era of Bright Expectations"Martin EdenThe Libraries of Famous Men: Jack LondonJack London's Wisdom on Living a Life of Thumos"The Symbolic Wilderness" by Gordon Mills"To Build a Fire""In a Far Country"Descriptions of Manliness: Jack LondonAoM series on Jack London's life"The Sentinel" by Arthur C. Today, I am welcoming Talia Joy of The Awakening Her Podcast onto the show. Talia is a manifestation mentor who is obsessed with helping lightworkers, seekers, and empaths to create a “pinch-me” life filled with purpose, abundance, and joy. Now that's something I can get behind!Today we share a conversation all about:✨ Manifestation✨ The Law of Attraction✨ What it's like to experience the world as an empath or highly sensitive person (HSP)✨ Self-care practices for empaths✨ And how to best support the empaths in your lifeMy takeaway from our time together was truly empowered to fully step into myself. And what I might have once seen as a quirk before I now know is just part of being me and embracing all that encompasses. For me, that means being a highly sensitive person, and there's such a freedom and no longer apologizing for what makes you feel different and instead celebrating it within yourself. In listening to this episode, I hope you too walk away feeling empowered to love and celebrate yourself exactly as you are today, even while making progress in the direction of your dreams!
There are between five and seven basic arguments against democracy and they all fall flat for me…except for one, which was on display more than ever the last few days.As a rule, I will always side with freedom. While there is no such thing as absolute freedom, America, for the most part, is as close as the world has ever seen to such, and in my opinion, that's a good thing…until I am reminded of the one argument that always makes me rethink my commitment to freedom and democracy. The most popular argument against democracy is that the constant change of leadership leads to instability. This is asinine. America isn't a company that needs the same CEO for decades; democracy thrives with constantly new ideas, people, and directions.Another objection is that consulting more people leads to delays…seriously? More ideas are a bad thing? More perspectives and life experiences are wrong? Get a lifeMy “favorite” (sarcasm) complaint of democracy is “Ordinary people don't know what is good for them,” which is the most elitist thing I have ever heard. The idea that there is some sort of council of elders who know better how the rest of us should live is beyond disgusting. https://brainly.in/question/4848474 https://www.dpsbokaro.com/dpsi/docs/econtent-2020-21/senior/21.04.2020/IX/HISTORY.pdfThe case against democracy that always gives me pause is that it ultimately creates such stupidity, that the society is no longer able to function. It sounds like a comedy bit, but it isn't; in fact, it's backed by centuries of examples of free societies finding themselves so comfortable that they simply become ignorant, lazy, arrogant, and apathetic. No doubt we saw endless signs of that over the last 2 years with covid, and, some would argue, the last 6 years, ever since the 2016 presidential election. Nothing is more lazy and childish than aligning yourself blindly with a ”team,” aka political party, and following any and everything that group does, regardless of how astoundingly wrong, extreme, or stupid it is, and yet that's where most Americans find themselves these days. https://theprint.in/world/democracy-devouring-itself-people-too-stupid-to-sustain-it-academic-paper-creates-furore/297989/The most recent example of American stupidity came just this weekend. It will seem to many as though I am simply exaggerating the facts to support my own personal hatred for this particular institution, but I'm not; I'm deadly serious, because of the entire premise that this society is completely ignorant and blind to.Tens of millions of Americans spent the last four days drooling over something called the Platinum Jubilee, the 70th anniversary celebration of Queen Elizabeth's reign over Great Britain. While it is true that the royal family has almost no official power any longer, they continue to hold an enormous amount of sway over the people of England, and the idea that anyone in this country reveres that is despicable.Over 245 years ago this nation went to war to become a nation. At the time, we were ruled by a king thousands of miles away who imposed his ideals onto us. He was unelected and had been deemed to be from a family of better genes than any of the rest of us; that was his claim to power, and at some point, European Settlers in America had enough and revolted, creating the United States of America. And yet, for some reason, Americans from near and far, east to west, spent the last four days entranced by a ceremony not just honoring the royal family, but worse, honoring the very idea that we fought to have independence from. The Platinum Jubilee is entirely about worshipping royalty; acknowledging that those from the gene pool of the Windsor family are, in fact, better than everyone else, and are to be revered. It's beyond disgusting, and yet so many of us don't see that…and that's where the stupid comes in.What could be more idiotic than deciding that the very institution your ancestors fought and died to escape should in any way be acknowledged, let alone celebrated? This is literally no different than gleefully attending the family reunion of the man who mass murdered your entire family generations ago, and yet we do!As a society, we have become more tolerant, accepting, understanding, and compassionate, and for the most part, that's a great thing. We don't have to also become the inevitable trope of stupid, ignorant, arrogant and apathetic in the process. To dismiss any of this as some sort of American anathema towards its own history and/or education is absurd. This is the very definition of self-loathing ignorance and stupidity, and it is a wonderful argument against democracy. While I will still always choose and advocate for freedom, it does offer pause to consider that perhaps people are better served with more structure, more rules, and more forced compliance as it relates to their nation's own history. After all, we live in a country that willingly complied with the most asinine demands of its' alleged leaders as it related to stopping the spread of a virus; no doubt they're more than willing to take a test every few years reminding them of the founding of their nation. Until then, long live the Queen…apparently.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Amazon seller turned inspection company Movley. Why do inspections make financial sense? - I can walk through the calculation, how just $3k of defective products can pay for 7 years worth of inspections! How does fraud & bribery work when it comes to inspections? - Common misconception is that this is a zero-sum game. Inspectors routinely commit fraud with or without bribes. Great chance to talk about how to prevent it.Take aways:Make sure you test your products. Sell a paper cup? Put water in it.Inspections are not a one off thing.Supply chain comes down to the human element. Inspectors can often be "honest thieves."Bio: Sajag Agarwal previously lived in China, is a former 7-figure Amazon seller, and the current founder of Movley. In 2015, he founded and grew his first e-commerce brand to $2M/yr in less than 2 years. Plagued with quality control problems, Sajag moved to China for 6 months, opened an office in Shenzhen, and spent most of his time on the factory floor. While there, he watched his inspectors fraudulently pass his bad production orders and did his own inspections. Out of frustration, in 2018 he founded Movley to make manufacturing overseas easier and more controllable. Movley brings tech, data analytics, and better process to do inspections better & more efficiently. Today's guest is Dr. Robert Waldinger, the Harvard clinical psychiatrist, psychoanalyst and Zen priest who directs the Harvard Study of Adult Development, one of the longest-running studies of adult life ever done. You have probably heard of this groundbreaking study. It tracked the lives of two groups of men for over 75 years, and it continues to follow their Baby Boomer children to understand how childhood experience reaches across decades to affect health and wellbeing in middle age. The study revealed something we all seem to know intuitively: Close relationships, more than money or fame, are what keep people happy throughout their lives.Robert himself exudes the warmth and contentedness of man who took the results of this study to heart. Website/Blog, Twitter, & Instagram HandleInsomniaDoodles.com, @InsomniaDoodles (on Twitter), @theinsomniadoodles (on instagram)Name *Sunshine "Sunny" AmmermanDisorder InfoWhat is your disorder? *Septo-Optic Dysplasia, which is a larger rare diagnosis that encompasses two other rare diagnoses, Panhypopituitarism and Optic Nerve Hypoplasia. I am also missing a membrane in my brain called the "septum pellucidum". At what age did your disorder become a daily issue? *0Who were you before your illness became debilitating? *Just an outdoorsy kid with a big imagination! My symptoms started to become gradually more debilitating in high school, so I didn't really have the chance to do much more than dream about what I thought I wanted my future to be like. My symptoms became unavoidably debilitating when I was in my early 20s.What would you do if you were not dealing with your disorder and/or disability? *I would be getting myself into all kinds of (good) trouble either as a journalist or legislator, more than likely. I would have loved to travel, meet as many different people as possible, and make a difference in some way. I think I have an activist's spirit. Having a rare disease and invisible disability just gave me a clear path to put that enthusiasm to work! What would you like people to know about your daily life? *I have no idea what kind of day I'm going to have until I wake up that day and assess my symptoms and energy levels. I'm a D&D nerd, so I like to compare it to waking up and rolling a D20. Sometimes it's a natural 1, other times it's just fine, but it's hard to make plans ahead of time when you never know what any given day has in store for your body's ability to function. What would make living and moving in the world easier for you? *Breaking the stigma of invisible illnesses and disabilities throughout our society would help tremendously, but practically speaking, as a partially blind person who can not drive due to my low vision, access to reliable, affordable transportation is KEY to my independence. I wanted to take an undergraduate digital art class at Purdue last year, and I lost that opportunity simply because I couldn't find transportation to go to that class, despite having swallowed my pride and asking everyone I could think to ask for help. That was disheartening, but inspired me to put more pressure on local leadership, which led to our previous mayor lovingly calling me "trouble" as a nickname! haha Do you have any life hacks? *Yes, indeed! UTILIZE TECHNOLOGY! Robots are our friends! I have smart speakers in my house that I have scheduled to remind me when to take my meds throughout the day as well as reminding me to take time to exercise or meditate, get ready for bed, and simply to eat lunch. I'm almost 30 years old, and until I started doing this, I had a bad habit of forgetting to take my meds (even though I've been taking them multiple times a day every day since I was 13. oops). Other than my speakers, I use Trello to help keep my tasks in order since its not uncommon for me to experience brain fog and totally forget important things on my mental to-do list. I also rely on my smart watch to help track health data relevant to my care plan. What kind of support do you get from family or friends? *I have been so, so lucky to have a partner who is understanding, patient, and more kind to me than I am to myself sometimes. He has seen me at my absolute lowest points and helped to carry me through it. He is incredible. I'm also super lucky to have friends and family members who understand and are willing to learn about and adapt to my needs. Of course, I've also encountered some family members and acquaintances who have been less than kind to me, and I've experienced some judgement and skepticism that stung, but I've learned over time that you can't win them all, so it's really their loss that they don't get to have me in their life. I don't put up with people like that if I can help it. "ya-yeet" as the kids say these days Have you ever had someone, or a medical professional, not believe you have an invisible illness because of your appearance and if so are there any examples that stand out? *OH BOY DO I. I'll share one experience in particular that is still vividly clear in my memory because I was so livid when it happened. I used to work at Kroger, and I actually loved my job there. I have a great work ethic, and this was before my body put its proverbial foot down and insisted on not working anymore. My bosses loved my gusto, and I'm a people-pleaser so I would often come in on my days off if called and fill in anywhere I was needed. I had been working there for about eight months or so and management hired a new manager, who was unaware of my health issues. When I was hired on initially, I warned the manager who had interviewed me about my potential health problems. I had told him before the interview was even over that I may eventually just not be able to continue working, because that had happened to me in the past at another job. He decided to give me a chance, and so I gave this job everything I had, I was so grateful. Anyway, this new manager came in with no idea about the warning I had given my other boss, and she saw my work ethic and was impressed. She offered me a promotion! I was asked to manage my very own department within the store. When she pitched this idea to me, I was ECSTATIC. I was just so overwhelmed with joy that someone trusted me enough to manage an entire department on my own, so I told her yes without really thinking too much about it. Later on when I had more of a chance to think, I had to acknowledge that lately my symptoms had been getting worse. I had already had an adrenal crisis that put me in the hospital, and a subsequent illness that put me out of commission for a couple of weeks. Since then, my daily symptoms had worsened and I never felt fully recovered. Recognizing the signs that had forced me to leave my previous job, I just didn't think it would be responsible for me to take on a management role by myself. If I had to miss work for any amount of time, my department would suffer, and that would in turn reflect negatively on the entire store. Despite my eagerness to please, I decided to go back into her office the next day (on my day off, mind you) and talk to her about it. I asked if the other manager had told her about my health condition. She said he had not, so I went on to explain what my diagnosis is, and how it affects my body's ability to function. I poured my heart out to her, and told her very personal information that made me feel so vulnerable. Admitting you have limits SUCKS, but I needed her to understand. After I explained it the best way I could, I went on to say that as much as I felt honored that she wanted me to take on this promotion, I thought the store should pick an employee that will be better able to keep up with a management role. She then looked me right in the eyes and said “You know what I think? I think you don't WANT to do it.” I remember standing there in stunned silence for a few seconds. I can still feel the ways my ears and cheeks filled with heat, my hands started to tremble. I wanted to grab her by her skinny ableist neck and shake vigorously, but somehow I managed to keep calm. I am proud of what I said next; “I understand how having an employee who isn't doing what you want them to do might be frustrating for you, but imagine what it's like having a body that doesn't do what you want it to do.” I don't think she really grasped how serious she screwed up, because she had the audacity to ask me again to take the management role. I told her no, and left. I continued to work there for a few months more before my health deteriorated too much to continue, and I faced more discrimination from her, which I can discuss on the show. My co-workers were in my corner, and when they saw the way she was treating me, they stepped in, which was amazing of them. I tear up still thinking back on that. How has your chronic illness affected your relationships? *It caused some strife between my father and I. I still have some painful memories of him blatantly telling me he thought I just wasn't trying hard enough even though I was facing severely debilitating symptoms. We didn't talk for a brief time after that, but he came around eventually and now understands the reality of my situation. Other than that, I have actually been really lucky to have friends and family who are really understanding and still invite me to things even though they understand I might not always be able to come, and they never let me feel guilty for cancelling plans. Is there anything you are afraid to tell people in your life? *Honestly? No, I'm an open book. I used to be shy about sharing the reality of my situation, but when I came to the realization that hiding the truth fuels the stigma faced by the invisible illness community, I couldn't let myself contribute to that anymore. Now, I'm unapologetically open about what I go through. I do want to point out that despite being open, I am careful not to come across as negative or a "complainer". I think it's absolutely possible to share the way our conditions affect us without wallowing in it. Not saying we should dive into toxic positivity and act like it doesn't suck, because it absolutely does sometimes, I just like to make sure people understand I don't want pity, I want understanding. What is your best coping mechanism? *Do naps count? I do enjoy a good old-fashioned nap sometimes. Other than that, I've found that just talking things through with someone who REALLY understands and cares about you is the most healing thing I've ever done for myself. What are you the most concerned about and the most hopeful for in the future? *I'm concerned about healthcare access for people like myself who CAN NOT go without constant medical care. I am personally a big proponent of medicare for all, and seeing insurance coverage for many Americans being put in jeopardy by the current administration has me very concerned indeed. What has me hopeful is the overwhelming support for medicare for all by so many young people, who are indeed the future of this country. I love their enthusiasm! They give me hope for the future. Is there anything you *don't* want to talk about? Is there a subject we should avoid during the interview? Are you ok with having the video released on YouTube under our Invisible Not Broken YouTube channel? *Is there anything you want to make sure we talk about during the interview? Like an organization you want to promote or something specific that you deal with.I want to give a shout out to the National Organization for Rare Disorders (NORD) and their Rare Action Network (RAN). I am the Community Engagement Liaison for the Indiana branch of RAN, and it would be awesome if I could share our contact info so people can reach out and learn more! Also, I was JUST informed that NORD is about to start their own official podcast called "NORDpod", and it would be really cool if I could announce that during the interview as well, but I totally understand if you would rather not promote another podcast. :) Other than that, I would love to mention the weekly support group I host for invisible illnesses and disabilities! It's called "positively invisible" and we meet in virtual reality on a platform called "Altspace" every Sunday at 7pm EST. As the title suggests, we approach life with invisible conditions with a more positive outlook, but without giving in to toxic positivity. We just come together to check in, support one another, and set small attainable weekly goals to help keep us motivated. We also have a discord server where we can chat between meetups, and I post links to upcoming events. I also need to give a shoutout to my zebra sister Katrina for introducing me to this podcast last year. I love it.
You might wonder, what does forgiveness have to do with clutter or decluttering. Well turns out a lot but that's not the only topic we are discussing. Julie has extensive Neuro-Strategic training and learned from her research that a majority of our actions are automated and that becoming aware and changing these is key to transforming lives for the better.Habits play a big part in dealing with clutter and keeping it from creeping back in, as we saw on previous episodes. Forgiveness comes in where Julie says, not forgiving someone or oneself is actually cluttering up our brain. I am very excited to welcome Suzanne Carpenter to the show today. Suz, how her friends call her, is a Certified Nutritional Consultant but most of all she is a lot of fun. We had a great conversation around clearing up food confusion. Years ago Suz suffered from an eating disorder but then was asked a very pivotal question that started to change everything for her, she was finally willing to do something about it. Listen in what that pivotal question was, and how Suz and I find so many similarities between people who suffer from overeating and/or not eating healthy and people who accumulate clutter. You will hear in this episode: what the difference is between physical and emotional hungerand the biggest clue to know if you are physically or emotionally hungry3 simple tips that you can implement in your diet right nowHer last words of wisdom are pure gold and are again true for our diet as well as for tackling clutter. So make sure you listen all the way to the end. If you find value in this conversation with Suz please share the episode with your family and friends because if you find value in it, they will too. In this episode, I talk about Charles Laughton's 1955 film "The Night of the Hunter." It's about two young children--John and Pearl--who are pursued by a dangerous man on the hunt for the money their father stole and gave to them. This is a classic film and a masterpiece and one of the most terrifying films I've ever seen. I provide some information about the making of the film and explore how it looks at evil, male violence, religion, and much more. There are spoilers in this episode. Website/Blog, Twitter, & Instagram Handlewww.thechanceofchoice.comTwitter @chanceofchoiceInstagram @chanceofchoiceName *Phoebe HowlettDisorder InfoWhat is your disorder? *Low blood pressure, POTS, EDS (previously ME)At what age did your disorder become a daily issue? *20Who were you before your illness became debilitating? *The sporty, outgoing, quick-witted, ambitious type. What would you do if you were not dealing with your invisible illness? *I am doing everything I want, just substantially more slowly! If I were able-bodied I would take on projects that are too big than I can handle, I would also be considering my health less, that would be a real luxury. What would you like people to know about your daily life? *That I work REALLY hard to be healthy enough to feel the same way they do after knocking back 5 drinks and only having 5-6 hours sleep. What would make living and moving in the world easier for you? *For people to not question the fact that not all symptoms can be seen. If I need to go and lay down in the disabled toilet floor, don't make eyes at me when I walk out. Alternatively, teleportation would be a lifesaver.Do you have any life hacks? *An electronic massager was a surprising addition to help me. CBT was groundbreaking for my thought process. I think the term 'life-hack' was coined by an able-bodied businessman to be honest, there is no life hack to being chronically ill, its a slower, harder, more draining life. The hack to a life of the chronically ill is how to maintain a positive reaction to our life's path when we can't choose it. That takes time and serious effort. What kind of support do you get from family or friends? *To be honest, I gave up on support years ago- I ask and get, its not a matter of consideration and thoughtfulness. But I get it, if I didn't have these illnesses I just wouldn't be able to understand them or what the needs are for any one day. I have learned to not expect to feel supported but know when to fight for my requests (in line with my illnesses) to be fulfilled. The only exception to this was my sister who at age 16 at the time blew me away. She was the only one who saw the emotional side to my illness, the isolation, the loneliness of my symptoms being ignored. She fought for me in that respect despite not understanding the illness.Have you ever had someone, or a medical professional, not believe you have an invisible illness because of your appearance and if so are there any examples that stand out? *My GP suggested my illnesses were depression, they also suggested I was pregnant, the tropical medicine specialist in the leading private hospital on Harley Street said it was a mild post-viral thing. But my real problems weren't that people didn't believe me on the whole, it was that they didn't appreciate the severity or down-played because they couldn't see the symptoms. I still remember my dad laughing at my requests when I came home one Christmas- when you have to laugh off 'so have you stopped pretending your sick yet' to friends and colleagues, getting it at home was seriously hard. How has your chronic illness affected your relationships? *I have lost so many friends because of my illness, they mixed up the requests I made for my illnesses over who I was combined with my outspoken nature at how brutal it is to have friends ignoring my illness. But really do you want friends who do that? Not really. I think for an ex, my illness was the beginning of the end. It has also made me look for the characteristics of thoughtfulness and consideration in new friends and partners, which is never something I'd consider previously. Is there anything you are afraid to tell people in your life? *I'm genuinely scared of how much shorter my life is going to be because of my illnesses. What is your best coping mechanism? *CBT or humor. My illnesses have given dark humor as a coping mechanism a whole new meaning. What are you the most concerned about and the most hopeful for in the future? *Most concerned about? Short-term I am always concerned about my sleep, like not in a healthy way. Mid-term I'm always nervous that something will happen in my life that will cause my body to go back into the depths of my illnesses I was previously ill. Long-term I recognize that my illnesses are tiny compared to what I had and I should not be consumed by them, my glass is full enough to be concerned about something more than just me. If we spend time only focusing on how we are breaking, we can't also see that the world is breaking in equal measure, seeing turtles try to eat plastic bags, seeing first hand Gen Zs trying to kill themselves as a result of pressure they now face, seeing kids in Guatemala drinking out puddles instead of buying the 10p water in the shops. Despite making steps forward in areas of the world we are overall I believe regressing in our own messy web of development. I am a dot in this world and my concerns, despite my health, should not only be about myself. But with regards to my illness, I'd love someone to come up with a simulation machine that lets people see what it’s like to live with a chronic illness, emotions and all. Then maybe the world would take it more seriously, and more money would go into finding out the why's and then the how's.Is there anything you want to make sure we talk about during the interview? Like an organization you want to promote or something specific that you deal with.To bring up the feeling of 'needing to do life a certain way'. It is something that I suffered with and still to an extent suffer with. I know lots of people I present to relate to this, I think a large area of my health suffered trying to conform with what I thought I was meant to do. In life, you are forced to consider decisions head vs. heart. But until you have a chronic illness or disability you never need to factor in body. With being ill, the decision is then head vs heart vs body. And any decision that wasn't true to my body, made my body suffer more. What makes you energized or enthusiastic? (basically any English comedy)What is the hardest and/or best lesson your condition has taught you?Best lessons: To never take for granted the moments when you are feeling refreshed, positive and pain-free. Provided you are not hurting people, you do not need to consider other people’s thoughts on your life decisions. you think you are being kind but really, doing what’s best for you is the kindest thing you could do for yourself and ultimately the people around you. Hardest lesson: On the whole, when it comes down to it, people don't actually care. But that’s okay, so long as you recognize it. It goes with the whole sentiment, don't hope for better, just be better. (as a person, wish it was that easy with my chronic health.)What is the best purchase under $100 that helped your lifeMy electric massager.Any questions you think we should add to this list? What symptoms did I face that I no longer face, what was my healthiest and most ill. The Fourth Chakra, known in Sanskrit as "Anahata" (meaning "Unbeaten"), is where one gives and receives love. This is where one connects with one another and shares this beautiful energy without losing oneself. This is the chakra for love. The color this chakra (Lower Heart Chakra) emits is Green. Air is the element ruled by this beautiful chakra, Our High Heart rules Unconditional Love and the lower Heart rules human love. It also governs compassion, healing, lungs, breath, and our sense of time, which is tied into the rhythmic cycles of our breath and heart beat. The lower heart chakra resonates in compassion with the earth tone or vibrations. The upper heart chakra, the thymus, responds at a harmonic level of vibration. It is the sounding together of both upper and lower Hearts that literally opens an energy portal. This portal is literally described as unconditional love and Infinite Compassion. The Metaphysical Attributes of the 4th Chakra include: Unconditional loves, ability to give and receive, compassion, humanitarian, nurturing, friendly, outgoing, balanced, in touch with one's feelings, empathetic. The heart chakra which is the wellspring of love, warmth, compassion, and joy is located in the center of the chest at the heart level. The 4th Chakra is the center of your deep bonds with other beings, your sense of caring and compassion, your feelings of self-love, altruism, generosity, kindness, and respect. It is pleasure, the enjoyment of Life, and the expression of Life in enjoyable fashions that nurture your conversion with this emerging portal of Compassion within the Universal Heart. When The Heart Chakra is open and energy is flowing freely, you are not only loving to others, you are also loving to your self. You know when you need to say no and when you need care and self-nurturing. Love Is the unifying force, the energy that is the most fundamental part of the universe, and of ourselves. Processing is a…process! When I think of how my body processes food, words come to mind like: heat, burning, energy, eliminating. These are INTENSE words!!It happens without us really noticing too much, but that is some intense work! There are foods we can take in that increase our body’s ability to process. Anti-oxidant rich foods like blueberries, superfoods like walnuts. When we prepare food for canning and storage, we call it processing. When we have a thought that feels like truth, we let it percolate for a moment to see if it really is true. We could call that processing. Processing is an intense system that produces transformation in some way.“Change is the process in which thoughts become things” -adapted from a statement by Kathy on our call.Even our Permission Process is a pattern that enables us to move from a hopeless state to a state of empowerment. That is INTENSE! Are you ready for some intense change in your life? Then prepare yourself for some intense processing!Today, I Give Myself Permission to ChangeI have plentyI love my lifeMy life is perfectI am content with what isI am happyAnd I know there is more to me and my earth experienceI am prepared I am ready to see what’s nextI ask for my next steps and I receive themI am up to the challenge of changeI love changeMaking changes seems hard, but it is really just an intense process. Disability Parking Placard Documentary click to donateWebsite/Blog, Twitter, & Instagram Handle@risingaboveraName *Effie KoliopoulosAge *31What is your disorder? *Rheumatoid arthritis (juvenile) At what age did your disorder become a daily issue? *18Who were you before your illness became debilitating? *Same person I am now, just transformed and evolved into the person I am meant to be.What would you do if you were not dealing with your invisible illness? *Travel the world and live in another state (which I could still do). What would you like people to know about your daily life? *Each day is different you don’t know what to expect at times. What would make living and moving in the world easier for you? *To have this disease disappear, lolDo you have any life hacks? *I have many depending on the subject. One life hack is stop explaining yourself to people and kick those out of your life who don’t have your back, to make room for those that truly do!What kind of support do you get from family or friends? *Family offers a differing support because they have been there from the beginning and know all the details of what I’ve gone through on a level friends don’t because they haven’t lived with me or even experienced it on the level family has. Unfortunately, support from friends has only been from a few and it can be offering social support, having someone to vent to or take you away from the daily grind of invisible illness to do something fun. Those who I thought supported actually turned out to be the opposite. Thankfully I found that out now than later. Times and hard times always reveal who is truly in your corner.Have you ever had someone not believe you have an invisible illness because of your appearance and if so are there any examples that stand out? *Yea, I had cops called on me for using a disability parking placard. Someone thought I was misusing it and issues a complaint. Cops showed up to my door. This was ten years ago and I’m actually creating a short film on this subject and have a crowdfunding campaign going on till 3/31. If we don’t make our goal we have plans to delay filming when weather is also better here in Midwest and to launch in October for invisible illness week. So hopefully we can! Regardless it’s worth keeping an eye out for, you don’t want to miss it!How has your invisible illness affected your relationships? *People not understanding, questioning you, getting impatient. My illness is also visible too in that physical signs can be seen but sometimes only if I point is out or it’s obvious if I’m not covering it up.Is there anything you are afraid to tell people in your life? *Nope. Those I’m afraid to tell things to shouldn’t be in my life and that’s how I know I’ll vibe and connect with someone.Does the fact that your disease is invisible change how healthcare professionals treat you? *No, but when I was having symptoms from 16 doctors said I was healthy and fine chalking it up to growing pains. I knew they were wrong and proved them wrong two years later after being diagnosed,What is your best coping mechanism? *Prayer, meditation, exercise, being in nature, swimming in the ocean if I’m by one, social support, watching a funny movie or tv show and bunch more. What are you the most concerned about and the most hopeful for in the future? *Concerned how I’ll manage a family if I choose to have one and surgeries I need for elbow and other joints. But honestly, I’ll worry about it when I get there- best advice. So many tools are out there to help cope and offer support and I know I can get through it by my supportive family. Hopeful to be in remission and researchers to find targeted solutions for diagnosis and treatment to cure this once and for all! What is your favorite swear word?F*ckIs there anything you want to make sure we talk about during the interview? Like an organization you want to promote or something specific that you deal with.My children’s book I’m working on for kids with juvenile arthritis, chronic illness and disability. Also the video project I talked about above. What is the hardest and/or best lesson your condition has taught you?Hardest- to stop saying yes and look after yourself. Best- self love and knowing my worthWhat is the best purchase under $100 that helped your lifeMy pillow and dragon speaking program which I have yet to set up but I know it will help. I have to think about everything ahead of time to determine if I can do it and if so, what modification/assistance do I need to be able to do said things. (spoon theory)What would make living and moving in the world easier for you? *If the world was actually handicap-friendly and if public transportation was better in the US. Also, if people knew about invisible illnesses and were more kind and helpful to each other...I get a lot of "but you don't look sick", "but you look good", "you're so young"...etc. Finally, if I was able to work part time.Do you have any life hacks? *Don't be afraid or ashamed to ask for and accept help.Use assistive devices like walkers, canes, wheelchairs to conserve energy andbedside tables/trays for a place to keep all your stuff on those days you're stuck in bed.Join support groups, such as those on Facebook. Sit on a stool while cooking to conserve energy.Buy pre-cut veggies/fruit to make cooking quicker. What kind of support do you get from family or friends? *Thankfully a lot! I literally wouldn't be alive through all this without them. Husband has taken on a lot at home to help, siblings came and visited and helped, mom took off 3 weeks to come be with me for my surgery. Other family members, friends, colleagues, and students sent cards, gifts, food, gave me rides, etc. And of course my dogs have been snuggling me like crazy to help!Have you ever had someone not believe you have an invisible illness because of your appearance and if so are there any examples that stand out? *Yes. My first vascular surgeon insisted that I couldn't possibly be having so many symptoms and so much pain from just one pinched vein. I quickly got a different vascular surgeon! (Plus I'm young, small and cute, so I often get odd looks from people when I use cane or walker and use the handicap placard)How has your invisible illness affected your relationships? *It's shown me who really is a good friend and who isn't. I have to decline doing some of the activities that my friends want to go do and sometimes cancel things I've rsvp-ed to if I'm not feeling well. My husband and I have ultimately grown stronger through this, but there have been stress-filled outburst at each other from time to time and we can't really be intimate since my pain is primarily in the abdominal and pelvic region. Is there anything you are afraid to tell people in your life? *I don't think anyone really understands how hard it's been both physically and mentally. I'm good at putting on a fake smile and saying "I'm ok" or mostly posting the "good days" or small accomplishments online. I'm also really nervous about returning to work after my medical leave is up.Does the fact that your disease is invisible change how healthcare professionals treat you? *Yes and especially since mine is a rare disorder, even if they believe me, most of them don't really know what it is or how to help. What is your best coping mechanism? *Humor...and my dogs. What are you the most concerned about and the most hopeful for in the future? *Returning to work is my answer to both of those questions. What is your favorite swear word?I don't really use swear words much...I tend to make up silly words instead. Is there anything you want to make sure we talk about during the interview? Like an organization you want to promote or something specific that you deal with.I want to spread awareness about my disorder, possible interventions like the surgery I had (renal auto-transplant) and what recovery is really like. What is the hardest and/or best lesson your condition has taught you?To take life slow, enjoy the simple things, and don't get upset over stupid stuff. What is the best purchase under $100 that helped your lifeMy rollator walker and/or my bedside swivel table See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
Buy A Light in the Darkness: Transcending Chronic Illness Through the Power of ArtI got an up close look at an amazing woman, Lisa Sniderman, Aoede, with an interview about her upcoming book A Light in the Darkness: Transcending Chronic Illness Through the Power of Art and her chronic illness Dermatomyositis. She is full of fairy sparkle and creativity. Just listening to her made me feel so inspired. We talk a lot about what it means to be chronically ill and disabled as an artist. In many ways, it is a tremendous escape to use art as a therapy when dealing with chronic pain. We go over some real ways, tools, and apps that can help you explore new art forms.Name *Lisa SnidermanWhat is your disorder? *Dermatomyositis (DM)-a rare autoimmune progressive muscle weakness disease, which attacks and weakens my immune system, muscles and skin as well as my mind and spirit, and if left untreated, could result in complete muscle wasting and long-term disability, as well as other complications. At what age did your disorder become a daily issue? *36Who were you before your illness became debilitating? *An Environmental Scientist and Singer-Songwriter-and ME-someone on go go go like that energizer bunny-hopping from activity to activity and never stopping until my body forced me to! Like when I was diagnosed: I was getting married in 6 weeks, I was prepping for a Northwest Tour and releasing my first full-length album, and planning a huge environmental workshop, and taking lapidary and songwriting classes, all at the same time. What would you do if you were not dealing with your invisible illness? *Still be on my path to fostering healing and doing expressive and teaching arts-just wouldn't have to do it WHILE battling my DM-and maybe I would be packing more into my days..What would you like people to know about your daily life? *I am NOT my disease. I spend my days in my place of joy-creating, expressing, or sharing my art and music-mostly from home so that I do not have to focus on the illness, the disease, the darkness, the doctor appointments, the things I can no longer do. It doesn't mean I don't struggle daily with weakness, get tired easily, have little stamina and energy when out in the world. It means I must choose my specific activities each day so I can make sure I have the energy for those things that DO bring me or others joy, and rest if I am going to do a big activity. I feel blessed to choose how to spend my days. I feel grateful that I am able to rest when I need to. Some days, I feel isolated from the world, but when I am out, I don't take my surroundings or my activities for granted. I treasure and try to be aware of living in each moment. I am so fortunate to have an amazing husband and supportive family and friends, and the sweetest fox terrier Alice, (I feel like I'm HER support animal!) so I don't go it alone. What would make living and moving in the world easier for you? *If I had more stamina and strength! Otherwise, I use my cane when I am out, and bring my walker if it is a longer distance. I use uber or lyft to get around, so I don't constantly have to rely on my husband and can feel more independent. Also, MORE CHAIRS when I am in stores! OMG I feel like I have to walk and walk and if I only have my cane, I tire easily-but no chair!Do you have any life hacks? *Sure! https://ourheartspeaks.org/wp-content/uploads/2018/07/Life-Lessons.pdfWhat kind of support do you get from family or friends? *I am blessed! I have surrounded myself with loving supportive family and friends during the hardest darkest moments, I learned that not everyone deals with sickness or caring for a sick person the same. I learned who stuck by me. Now that I have been living with chronic illness for 10 years, I find that most of friends get that I have limitations but don't really need to know the details of what it is like for me to go through my day to day dealing with DM. My husband is a saint and a rock. I swear I wouldn't be here let alone the person I am today without him as a true partner by my side. I love that he believes me, wants me to rest, gets that I have limitations and wants to care for me. I know how rare that is.Have you ever had someone not believe you have an invisible illness because of your appearance and if so are there any examples that stand out? *Not believe-but more like, WOW you look great! I'm so glad to see you feeling well! Or you look amazing-therefore you must feel well! How has your invisible illness affected your relationships? *Yes in that I no longer drive (I haven't since 2010) nor do I have a lot of stamina for being out in the world. That means that people who want to stay in my life often do it on my terms-e.g., come to me rather than me going to them. I am able to do more now, but that has been the case for many years. People who are close to me accommodate. Same with my crazy restricted diet-I've been gluten, sugar, and dairy free for 10 years! Another example, my Producer and I were working on a full-length fantasy musical audiobook. He lives in LA, but drove up to my house in SF Bay Area so we could work together because he knew it would be less taxing on me. Also, with my husband! I was diagnosed 6 weeks before we got married! So for all of our married life, it has been caretaker-patient relationship-especially when I flared in 2010 and had to spend a month in the hospital due to complete muscle weakness and then months of grueling rehab to regain my strength, relearn to sit up, stand, walk, sing and play. It has affected every relationship I have I suppose! Is there anything you are afraid to tell people in your life? *At times, especially because I’m almost always home, I feel like I’m hiding from the world, playing it safe indoors. Maybe that’s why I create light characters, focus on fantasy, and want to connect with my inner child. As I’ve taken on my artist-Aoede the Muse’s identity, inspiring others, I’m disinclined to share the scary, icky, fearful, sad, negative feelings—the secret spaces where I’ve stuffed my skeletons. I tell myself I have to put on a smile and be upbeat, not show weakness or have self-doubt. It’s much easier to tell the world that all is beautiful than to admit that living with a chronic illness is harder than anything I’ve ever faced; that some days it’s exhausting to get out of bed, despite my positive attitude and optimism; that I get tired of thinking and talking about being sick, and just plain being sick; that the endless therapies, drug cocktails, and unwanted side effects keep me on a roller coaster; that I resent having precious moments of my life replaced with 156 doctors’ appointments; that I wish I had more stamina for being in the world; that I wonder where David’s and my relationship would be had I never gotten sick—if he didn’t have to do all the shopping, cleaning, cooking, and driving, and we had an equal partnership instead of a caretaker- patient relationship.Does the fact that your disease is invisible change how healthcare professionals treat you? *I have had the same rheumatologist up until Oct 2017-so I felt fortunate and listened to...What is your best coping mechanism? *creating arts and music! (e.g., expressive arts-creating, recording, performing songs; creating and recording full-length musicals on audiobooks and adapting them to musical theater stage plays; sharing my story, writing and releasing my memoir; collaborating with 50 artists who use creativity to heal to share their stories; helping others navigate their personal darkness; being a teaching artistWhat are you the most concerned about and the hopeful for in the future? *Concern-that I will stay here at this place and this will be my best quality of life that I won't be able to get off the treatment-that there is no remission or cure-only manage and get the best quality of life I can; that I will flare and have setbacks and revert to the shell of a person I was in 2010 in the hospital and not have the enthusiasm and physical ability to sing, to play, to create; that I never know when I am doing too much until it is too late. I fear the unknown, particularly loss or change in security, support, and safety. In a worst-case scenario, being forced to work to maintain financial security could further stress my body, make my DM flare up, and land me back in the hospital, undoing years of recovery. I imagine losing my support, my gift of time, and my ability to live in my place of joy and focus on my art each day. I worry that I could change as a person— that I could lose my drive, my passions, my heart, and my spirit and have no room or interest to chase or follow my dreams if I were constantly stressed and concerned about making ends meet or getting sicker. I think of the negative impact such losses could have on my relationships with David and other family members, friends, and even fans. I can’t help but wonder if I even fear success because of what it might cost me. Hopes: I am managing for now! I am living in my place of joy so that is the best place I could be. I am hopeful I will continue to have the best quality of life I can. I am hopeful my energy, strength and stamina will improve over time. I am hopeful I will be able to travel, stay out in the world for longer, do activities that make me feel a sense of normalcy. I know I will continue to create to help me and others heal. Also, that there is a CURE for myositis in the future and better diagnosing so others (especially the kids juvenile myositis) don't have to suffer! What is your favorite swear word?HA! probably assIs there anything you want to make sure we talk about during the interview? Like an organization you want to promote or something specific that you deal with.Love to make sure we talk about: my upcoming memoir: "A Light in the Darkness-Transcending Chronic Illness through the Power of Art and Attitude" Sep 21 publish date-and Myositis Awareness Day; and Lights in the Darkness-my collaboration with more than 50 artists who are using creativity to help heal to share stories of art and healing-live/streaming event in December 2018. Perhaps also success-what does it mean how has it changed etc. bc there are so many ways to think about success besides financial it is important to attract abundance into your life. What is the hardest and/or best lesson your condition has taught you? When life throws us curveballs; when we’ve lost our inspiration because of a significant change in health status, and when we live day in and day out with a chronic disease or disability, it’s tempting to want to give up our dreams, to play the victim. It’s easy to succumb to discouragement, self-pity, or even despair. But dreams and significant health challenges aren’t mutually exclusive. I’m a living example. We can live with hope, passion, and joy, even if the shape and substance of our dreams have changed. We can live well with chronic illness! What is the best purchase under $100 that helped your lifeMy unique cane! Life can be full of kismet. I just started doing live recording on ZubiaLive about chronic illness and trying to live a life and the site wanted to connect with LinkdIn. I have not been active on LinkdIn since I was a photographer. So I did my best to create a decent profile for Invisible Not Broken Podcast. In less than an hour I had gotten a lovely email from a Pain Management Doctors PA. who also has Ehlers Danlos Syndrome. A fellow zebra who knows things from the other side of the stethoscope? I grabbed her for an interview the very next day!I had some other things to post but this is far too important. If you want to skip right to the point on pain management lists and what to do or say to have a better emergency room experience go to minute 26 and keep listening. We meander a bit but you will get what you need. If you have the time listen all the way through.
