In this week's Armao on the Brink, Rosemary speaks with NBC broadcaster and author Linda Ellerbee from Mexico about what she and our foreign neighbors think of Trump's first three months back in office and none of it is positive. So how do you fight back and how do you cope with dictatorship, and is that what we are living in right now?
Election Day offers hope that with the right choices, things can change for the better. This week, three women journalists, ardent feminists, talk about choices on the ballot in November 2023, matters not on the ballot that should be—guns, and women's rights left unresolved despite years of voting. Bookwaves/Artwaves is produced and hosted by Richard Wolinsky. Links to assorted local theater & book venues Bookwaves Vanessa Veselka, whose latest novel is “The Great Offshore Grounds,” in conversation with host Richard Wolinsky. “The Great Offshore Grounds” is an epic novel about two sisters on a quest to find themselves during the upheavals of the current era. It's a detailed examination of feminism, of lives lived on the edge, and of life in the parts of America we hear little about. Vanessa Veselka's first novel, “Zazen,” has just been reissued by Vintage. Published by a small press over a decade ago, it looks at the travails of young adults set against the backdrop of an ever-increasing political violence in America. Both novels are available in trade paperback. Vanessa Veselka, the daughter of journalist Linda Ellerbee, left home at the age of fifteen and early in her life lived the life of a homeless vagabond, eventually becoming a professional musician in the Pacific Northwest, a union organizer, and a writer of fiction. Complete 51-minute interview. Bookwaves Robert B. Parker (1932-2010) is known today as one of the most important writers of detective fiction during the final quarter of the 20th Century. His wise cracking Boston private eye, Spenser, Spenser's sidekick Hawk, and girlfriend Susan Silverman have become iconic figures. When Parker died at the age of 77 in 2010, 38 Spenser novels had been published. Two more came out posthumously, and a third was completed by his agent. Novelist Ace Atkins has now written nine more Spenser novels. The series Spenser for Hire, starring Robert Urich and Avery Brooks ran for three seasons, and Brooks had a spin-off that ran for half a season, A Man Called Hawk. Several television movies were also made from Parker's Spenser books, the most recent, Spenser Confidential, is actually based on one of Ace Atkins' Spenser novels. This interview hosted by Richard Wolinaky and Lawrence Davidson, was recorded in the spring of 1981 while Robert B. Parker was on tour for his novel, Early Autumn, and marked the first Probabilities interview with a mystery writer. His career hadn't advanced under his first publisher, Houghton-Mifflin, and he switched to Delacorte, and Parker's audience began to grow. This was his seventh Spenser novel, and his eighth over all (Wilderness had come out late in 1980 and Looking for Rachel Wallace was his first under the new contract. At the time of the interview, his first five novels were all out of print in paperback. Though he says in the interview his detective fiction would be limited to the Spenser series, eventually he branched out to write another series of nine books featuring Jesse Stone, a former LAPD detective who becomes the police chief in a small New Enngland town, and six novels featuring Sunny Randall, a female detective. Eventually there was some crossover between the three series. Along the way, he also wrote a handful of westerns, the Cole and Hitch series, and two books featuring Raymond Chandler's detective, Philip Marlow. When Parker died in 2010 of a sudden heart attack, the family decided to let other writers continue the Spenser, Stone and western series, which go on to this day. Complete 40-minute Interview. Ostensibly designed to discuss three large news stories in the general vicinity of 1994 - Michael Fay's walloping adventure in Singapore, the epic showdown between Tonya Harding and Nancy Kerrigan at the Lillehammer Olympics, and the violent dissolution of John and Lorena Bobbitt's marriage - this entry in the IHOY catalog spends the most time gushing over the sheer genius of one "Weird Al" Yankovic, whose '94 song "Headline News" forms the basis of this discussion. Dial in as Sarah & Joe talk about their earliest memories of the famed parodist, his classic albums Bad Hair Day and Even Worse, his Christmas songs and polkas, and their personal favorites from his vast repertoire. Sarah's off-handed suggestion later to tag Weird Al on Twitter leads the hosts down the road of other random celebrity interactions they've had online, roping in such disparate notables as Nick News' Linda Ellerbee and former American Idol host Brian Dunkleman! And yes, loyal listeners, "Stuck in a Closet with Vanna White" makes another triumphant appearance on the show! Planned as a straight news episode, transformed into a Weird Al lovefest, intense media scrutiny and songs about lasagna are given equal time in this splashed-across-the-front-page thirty-eighth episode!

Meredith Walker has deep roots in Texas, but her career and life passions have taken her all over the world. It's an unscripted pathway that she wants to encourage other young women to consider. “If you think you're allowed to try a lot of things, then you'll try a lot of things. But if you feel like this is what's acceptable, you'll kind of stay there.” Walker got her feet wet working with acclaimed journalist Linda Ellerbee and Nick News. Rising from intern to producer at warp speed, she traveled the U.S. interviewing children for the Peabody and Emmy award-winning series. When an opportunity to join Saturday Night Live presented itself, she jumped on it. Head of Talent for SNL was an exhilarating experience and also where she met actress, best friend, and long time collaborator Amy Poehler. Through their shared experiences, the pair recognized a gap in content for young girls. What started as an online “clubhouse” primarily for girls has evolved to become an inclusive, positive online community for anyone who identifies with its mission of positive self-identification and advocacy. Walker travels to promote that mission for Smart Girls and beyond. She served as the journalism envoy for the U.S. State Department Bureau of Culture and Education's mission to the Al Za'atari and Emirates Refugee Camps and visited remote primary-care clinics on delegations to Haiti and Malawi. Her new interview series, Life Unscripted with Meredith Walker on Nelda TV builds upon the same premise of filling a gap in important content by telling the stories of interesting and dynamic women. Says Walker, “They've reached a place where they're not letting society define who they are or what success means for them.” Living “unscripted” is a maxim she has embraced herself. “It's been an interesting and winding journey. I had a sense of the kind of person I wanted to be in the world. I had no idea how I would get there. I'm just so glad I made it.” Her advice—“The way that you ‘unscript' your life is, first of all, understanding the difference between what other's expectations are and what you really want.”

Closing out our For the Love of Women Who Built series, we have Meredith Walker, the Co-Founder of Amy Poehler’s Smart Girls, an organization which is dedicated to helping young people cultivate their authentic selves. They emphasize intelligence and imagination over “fitting in.” Meredith Walker began her television career producing the Peabody and Emmy award-winning Nick News with Linda Ellerbee, and then went on to head up the talent department for Saturday Night Live, where she met and became fast friends with Amy Poehler. They shared tales of their own upbringings and dreamed about how great it would be to create something to help girls get through their own awkward teen and pre-teen years. They started Smart Girls with a “mix of great planning, and luck, and not planning,” and now they help girls all over the world navigate the choppy waters of adolescence. Meredith shares her personal story of following the “unscripted path” and encourages those of us who have had an unconventional life’s journey to embrace what we care about and recognize the value we add to our world.
This is a very special episode—it's my call with Linda Ellerbee, award-winning journalist and my introduction to journalism (Nick News, anyone?). I talked to Linda about the jobs she's never told anyone about—these are not on the résumé—getting fired from the AP, plus sexism, feminism...all the hard-hitting -isms. Please read Linda's And So It Goes and Move On. They. Are. So. Good. Music by Justin Le Tourneau and Andrew Huber Logo by Theresa Berens of Boss Dotty
