In the course of a single generation, Spanish policy toward Lipan Apaches shifts from alliance to extermination. But a generation of alliance-making by Lipan Captain Bigotes makes the Lipan alliance more powerful than ever. They beat back the Comanches to the Red River and the Spanish to a line of presidios that still cuts across the North American continent like a scar as the US-Mexico border.www.BrandonSeale.com
Spanish army officers prove reluctant to change their mindset, however, even as the Lipan alliance under the great Captain Picax-Andé brings to a definitive halt the advance of Spanish conquest. www.BrandonSeale.com
The Lipan Apaches become proxies for a Texian guerilla war against northern Mexico, until Texian policies cut them off from their lands and their livelihoods. Ever adaptable, the Lipanes flip the script, relocating to their old haunts in Mexico and raiding Texas property. The Texas-Mexico border itself – and the freedom it offers – becomes an artifact of enduring Lipan resistance during these years. The annexation of Texas, however, unbalances the playing field in an oddly legalistic way.www.BrandonSeale.com
Episode 37 – The Apache warriors of the Southwest Who were the Apaches? As I've talked about in the past, if your idea of the indigenous peoples of the Americas is based upon movies and television then it's most likely not accurate. If you do a quick google search on movies about the Apaches, you'll find at least 24. Shoot, there have been numerous white actors who have portrayed Apaches such as Burt Lancaster in the movie “Apache”. The reality is often quite different than what has been portrayed, because honestly Hollywood didn't really care to get it right. This was especially true in the 50s, 60s, and 70s. So who really were the Apache? They are part of the southern branch of the Athabascan group. That group encompasses a very large family of people, and whose languages are found in Alaska, western Canada, and the American Southwest. Several branches lived in a region that went from the Arkansas River to Northern Mexico and from Central Texas to Central Arizona. Mostly they were divided into Eastern and Western, with the Rio Grande serving as the dividing line. There are two groups, the Lipans and the Mezcaleros, that lived partially or entirely within the borders of Texas. The Apaches were known by multiple names. As a nomadic people, it is likely that several names were actually identifying the same band. Some of the Apache bands in Texas were Limita, Conejero, and Trementina. However, only the Lipan and Mescalero names survived into the nineteenth century. Most likely the name we know and use, Apache, came from the Zuñi word apachu, meaning "enemy," or possibly Awa'tehe, the Ute name for Apaches. When they referred to themselves the words they used are Inde or Diné, which simply means "the people." Apaches migrated into the Southwest sometime between A.D. 1000 and 1400. Separated from their northern bands, they created a home for themselves in the Southwest. They seemed to have migrated south along the eastern side of the Rocky Mountains, then spread west into what is now the states of New Mexico and Arizona. Once the Comanche began moving into the same area, they had to relocate further south and west. Both the Lipan and Mescalero Apaches social unit was the extended family. Several families would usually stay together, and the leader was their most prominent member. This individual acted as chief advisor and director of group affairs. Several groups would live close to one another, so they were able to come together for both defense, offense, and the occasional social or ceremonial occasions. The Lipan Apache apparently had no formal organization larger than the band. While being flexible for the immediate members, this type of loose organization did cause issues when it came to establishing relations with the Spanish, and later with the Mexicans, Texans, and Americans. For example while one band might make peace with its enemies, another was free to remain at war with the same group. The band leaders were males; however, females held a central place within the tribe. Once married, the groom would move in and live with his wife's family. He was also required to hunt and work with his in-laws. If the wife should die, the husband was required to stay with her family, and most of the time they would furnish him with a new bride. In contrast, the wife had little to no obligation to the husband's family. However, if he died, his family could provide a cousin or brother for her to marry. Men were allowed to marry more than one woman, but few besides wealthy or prestigious leaders did so. Now since they were required to live with their wife's family, that meant that any other wife would have to be either a sister or cousin of their current wife. As a nomadic people who subsisted almost entirely on the buffalo, they usually covered much territory. The buffalo provided clothing, and coverage for their tents, which whenever they moved were broken down and loaded onto sleds which were then pu...
If there was anything more improbable in Texas history than the alliance orchestrated by José Francisco Ruíz between Lipan Apaches and Comanches in 1816, it was the peace brokered WITH the Lipanes and Comanches on behalf of the newly-independent Mexican empire in 1822. It would culminate in one of the most memorable scenes in Texas history, the journey of Ruíz and a handful of Lipan and Comanche chiefs to the halls of Monteczuma for a three-way peace that Texas would never truly be able to enjoy... José Francisco Ruíz would remain a focus of Spanish royalist vengeance after the Battle of Medina. For good reason. From his exile in Louisiana, Ruíz orchestrated a proxy war by his Lipan and especially Comanche allies against Spanish royalists' fragile hold on Texas. It would bring Spain to the brink of abandoning Texas. Eventually royalists would have no choice but to ask Ruíz to bring peace to the frontier that he had incited to total war.Click here to purchase the complete audiobook of "Tejano Patriot" by Art Martínez de Vara and read by Brandon Seale. www.BrandonSeale.com

What if I told you that Chicago was founded by the efforts of an African American man & his Native American wife in the late 1700's? The little-known origins of shared kinship between Africans, Native Americans and Asians lie in their alliances and allegiances formed during slavery and as fellow citizens of the United States. Hundreds of years ago, long before Europeans came to America, the mountains, plains and deserts belonged to the native tribes such as the Mescalero Apaches. No other Native Americans in the Southwest caused the terror and constant fear in the settlers as the Apaches did throughout their existence. They raided Spanish, Mexican and American settlers, and were known to be expert guerrilla fighters who defended their homelands. The Mescalero Apache were great warriors with legendary chiefs, notably among them the legendary Chief Geronimo. Today, three sub-tribes, Mescalero, Lipan and Chiricahua, make up the Mescalero Apache Tribe. I am grateful to welcome to the show, the honorable (recently retired) Mescalero Apache Chief Gabe Aguilar for an eye-opening discussion on topics often left unspoken. For 31 years, Florida “Flo” Archuletta has taken care of a plot of land on the Southwest corner of 14th and Lipan. After the 1993 killing of her son, Archuletta turned the once-abandoned Westside lot into a tribute to him, dubbing it the “Jerry Martinez Family Memorial Park.” But there's a problem: Archuletta never formally owned the land, and now that real estate in the neighborhood is a hot commodity, the legal owners have come calling. So who really owns this community park? City Cast Denver host Bree Davies met up with Flo in the park over the weekend to hear the whole story. Plus, we hear from the legal owners about their plans. An Alamo battle continues to be fought before the U.S. Fifth Court of Appeals in New Orleans. The Lipan Apache Tribe of Texas filed an amicus curiae (friend of the court) brief March 13 in support of the Tap Pilam Coahuiltecan Nation in its suit against the Alamo Trust, which manages day-to-day operations at the Alamo. The suit challenged the Alamo Trust for blocking tribal members from annual prayer ceremonies in the Alamo church and excluding them from committees that oversee the handling of human remains uncovered during construction work on the Alamo grounds. Runaway brides, rude lords, and the return of Doyle’s American West. In “The Adventure of the Noble Bachelor,” Holmes finds himself assisting a Lord with a personal problem: his new bride vanishing the day after their wedding. Sarah and Marisa talk about armchair detective fiction, Watson's traveling war wound, Lestrade's wet laundry, and which one of us gets to propose marriage to Hatty Doran first. Content warning: This episode contains some very Victorian depictions of racism and sexism. NOBL makes a brief mention of what Doyle calls “Apache Indians” - we want to clarify that the Apache are a group of culturally related Native American tribes in the Southwest, including Chiricahua, Jicarilla, Lipan, Mescalero, Mimbreño, Ndendahe (Bedonkohe or Mogollon and Nednhi or Carrizaleño and Janero), Salinero, Plains (Kataka or Semat or "Kiowa-Apache") and Western Apache. Currently, the San Carlos Apache Tribe in southeastern Arizona is engaged in a legal battle to stop their sacred land of Oak Flat from being handed over to mining corporation Rio Tinto. Deset lokálních pivovarů, italská, mexická i česká kuchyně. This episode is all about the Apache tribes. Today, we speak of the creation stories of the Jicarilla, Lipans, White Mountains, and the Chiricahua! Here, we tell tales of the great spirits named Hactcin who created the Jicarilla world. Then, the Lipan story of a great emergency council that sought to leave the underworld and find earth, and the White Mountain's tale of the four grandparents who created the world for themselves. Apache is the collective term for several culturally related groups of Native Americans originally from the Southwest United States. The current division of Apachean groups includes the Western Apache, Chiricahua, Mescalero, Jicarilla, Lipan and Plains Apache (formerly Kiowa-Apache). During the centuries of Apache-Mexican and Apache-United States conflict, raiding had become embedded in the Apache way of life, used not only for strategic purposes but also as an economic enterprise, and often there was overlap between raids for economic need and warfare. Raids ranged from stealing livestock and other plunder, to the capture and/or killing of victims, sometimes by torture. Mexicans and Americans responded with retaliatory attacks against the Apache which were no less violent, and were very seldom limited to identified individual adult enemies. The raiding and retaliation fed the fires of a virulent revenge warfare that reverberated back and forth between Apaches and Mexicans and later, Apaches and Americans. From 1850 to 1886 Geronimo as well as other Apache leaders conducted attacks, but Geronimo was driven by a desire to take revenge for the murder of his family and accumulated a record of brutality during this time that was unmatched by any of his contemporaries.[13] His fighting ability extending over 30 years forms a major characteristic of his persona. Among Geronimo's own Chiricahua tribe many had mixed feelings about him. While respected as a skilled and effective leader of raids or warfare, he emerges as not very likable, and he was not widely popular among the other Apache. This was primarily because he refused to give in to American government demands leading to some Apaches fearing the American responses to Geronimo's sense of Indian nationalism. Nevertheless, Apache people stood in awe of Geronimo's "powers" which he demonstrated to them on a series of occasions. These powers indicated to other Apaches that Geronimo had super-natural gifts that he could use for good or ill. In eye-witness accounts by other Apaches, Geronimo was able to become aware of distant events as they happened, and he was able to anticipate events that were in the future. He also demonstrated powers to heal other Apaches. HUMP #019: Rev. Matt Lipan-“The Hybrid Approach to Launching Indiana's Newest United Methodist Church" The purpose of the Hoosier United Methodist Podcast is strengthening the connection in the United Methodist Church in the state of Indiana to achieve the mission of making disciples of Jesus Christ of the transformation of the world. In Episode#019, Dr. Brad Miller has an enlightening conversation with Rev. Matt Lipan, Lead Pastor of "Gateway Community Church" in Indianapolis. Gateway is Indiana's newest congregation launching on July 1, 2015 and chartering on June 10, 2016. Matt shares with Brad the story of Gateway and how he and the leaders of the church strategically took a hybrid approach to launch strong and grow rapidly to the point where the church now has two worship experiences with over 200 adults and children in attendance. Matt tells about how Gateway emerged out of the mission and ministry of the larger Castleton United Methodist Church; and how working through the "Fruitful Congregations Journey" process was instrumental in decisions by the Caslteton church to give birth to the new Gateway congregation which is now completely independent and stands on its own. Matt describes how working with a parent church and launching a new work has elements of a redevelopment project as well as a brand-new work and thereby is what he describes as a "hybrid" approach to church planting. Dr. Brad drills deep with Matt on the particular pressures of planting a new congregation the emphasis on reaching children in the growing suburban community and his vision moving forward of Gateway becoming a teaching church for the region and giving birth to new congregations themselves with a multiplication strategy. You will also hear about Matt's personal call to ministry and his faith journey as well as the joys and challenges of “do-it-yourself” home remodeling projects. Episode#019 of the Hoosier United Methodist Podcast is sponsored by the book “Meet The Good People: Wesley's 7 Ways to Share Faith” by Rev. Dr. Roger Ross and supports Mission Guatemala under the direction of Rev. Tom Heaton.
