Are you worried your teen doubts themselves no matter how hard they work? Do they brush off compliments or beat themselves up when things don't go perfectly? In this powerful episode, Dr. Lisa Orbé-Austin, psychologist and author of Your Child's Greatness, joins Colleen to explore how imposter syndrome shows up in teens—and how parents can help prevent it. Lisa shares how imposter syndrome stems from not internalizing success, overvaluing others, and defaulting to perfectionism. Drawing from personal stories—including her daughter's fencing journey—Lisa highlights the importance of embracing failure, savoring small wins, and teaching your child to develop a growth mindset. You'll hear heartfelt insights about helping your child build resilience and why internalizing success matters just as much as achieving it. Dr. Lisa Orbé-Austin is a licensed psychologist and executive coach. She earned her doctorate in counseling psychology from Columbia University. Her expertise on impostor syndrome is regularly sought by the media, and she has appeared in outlets such as the Financial Times, the TODAY show, Good Morning America, Forbes, HuffPost, Refinery29, and more. Dr. Orbé-Austin has been an invited speaker at various national conferences. Her first book, Own Your Greatness: Overcome Impostor Syndrome, Beat Self-Doubt, and Succeed in Life (Ulysses Press, 2020) coauthored with her partner, Dr. Richard Orbé-Austin, was a finalist for the Foreword INDIES Book Award. Her second book, Your Unstoppable Greatness: Break Free of Impostor Syndrome, Cultivate Your Agency, and Achieve Your Ultimate Career Goals H(Ulysses Press, 2022) is focused on dealing with the systemic dynamics that keep impostor syndrome in place and how to directly combat those dynamics. Here are three inspiring takeaways from this conversation: Failure is not the enemy—it's the classroom. Helping your teen reframe failure as part of the growth process builds resilience and self-belief. Let them fail safely, and support their emotional regulation afterward. Celebrate the small wins. Whether it's improving by one point or making it through a tough day, acknowledging progress helps your teen internalize success and develop confidence in their abilities. Model and nurture self-worth. Teens learn by watching. When you savor your own wins and embrace your imperfections, you give your child permission to do the same—and combat imposter syndrome from the inside out. For years, Megan Freeland worked as a public health pharmacist for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. But over time, she realized she was missing the opportunity to apply a creative flair to her writing career. Megan set out on her own to build a health content marketing company. Through StockRose Creative, LLC, Megan supports innovative health organizations, helping them use the power of words to reach their target customers and clients and turn them into raving fans.  In this episode, Megan shares not only how she uses her voice as a health content writer, but also how she handles writing for brands, many of which have their own voices, personalities, and writing styles. Apple Podcasts Google Podcasts Spotify Amazon/Audible Highlights from the interview As a writer in a public health setting early in her career, Megan learned how to massage information to make it more digestible and actionable for the general public.   Information impacts behavior.  Misinformation has an impact on the health of communities.  Relevant and accurate information helps people live healthier lives.  We talked about Megan's writing style as a health content writer.  Writing style can take time to develop.  You will learn what comes easily or is difficult through practice.  You must practice to figure it out.  It's harder to write a piece that's not in your area of expertise.  It's “a heavier lift.”  You need to find your niche so it's easy to write.  It's hard to scale a business writing for clients who aren't a good match for your skills.  Find a lane you feel comfortable in and that feels natural to you so you can maximize your expertise and your impact in that lane.   Megan shared two stories about how feedback on her writing influenced her.  Feedback can help a writer find the right clients.   Who are Megan's ideal clients?  Either digital health companies or innovative health companies, especially those who have either primarily black audiences or have a segment of their audience who is black.  Megan likes working with clients who are specific about their audience and the types of actions or behaviors they are trying to stimulate.   There's always room for a new perspective in the writing community.  All of our perspectives are different.  There are people out there who share your perspective and will be maximally impacted because they share your perspective.  You will perform your best when you are writing for an audience you can relate to or that you're passionate about or have expertise in.   Megan is a Health Content Writing Coach.  Her program is called Health Professionals to Health Writers.  You can find it linked to her profile on LinkedIn (as of December 2021).  Her YouTube Channel is also called Health Writing For Health Professionals; it includes videos on Wednesdays:  tips for getting started in health content writing and lessons Megan has learned along the way. Nontraditional pharmacists need to share what they do so that other pharmacists feel inspired to use their pharmacist identity and skills to do something nontraditional too.  We talked about how imposter syndrome can make it tough to “toot our horns.”  Megan is bilingual.  She speaks Spanish and English.  During her career as a pharmacist, she worked for an MTM company who needed a Spanish-speaking pharmacist consultant to help Spanish-speaking patients.  We concluded the interview with six questions for Megan: What are some pitfalls about content strategy creation? How can a writer address health literacy in consumer-facing content without being patronizing? How do you like the research part of being a writer? What's your favorite part of being a writer? What are some challenges you face? What are some tools and resources you use? Thank you for listening to episode 129 of The Pharmacist's Voice ® Podcast!

Albert Own Your Greatness by Lisa Orbé-Austin and Dr. Richard Orbé-Austin Today's episode is an interview with Dr. Blair Thielemier.  She's a pharmacist and business development consultant, specializing in pharmacist-led billing models. She consults on and produces e-learning programs for state and national organizations, pharmacy wholesalers, payers,  and technology start-ups.  She has books and online courses available for individuals looking to leverage their pharmacy knowledge into monetized clinical programs at https://pharmapreneuracademy.com.  She speaks internationally about trends in leveraging pharmacists to improve value-based care. The focus of our interview is on Blair's upcoming Elevate Pharmacy Virtual Summit, which is LIVE over Zoom October 21, and 22, 2021, 9 AM to 4 PM Central Time.  Content will highlight Blair's experience, what she sees that is working in the pharmacy industry and what's working in consulting, and so much more.   Even if you are listening to this episode after the Summit, you will still get value from listening to this episode.  Blair talks about how she uses her voice to advance the profession of pharmacy and educate other pharmacists on how to leverage their pharmacy knowledge into monetized clinical programs.  To learn more, visit https://pharmapreneuracademy.com.    Highlights from the interview Knowing your “why” is important.  Blair's mission is elevating the profession of pharmacy. In the beginning, Blair was shy about using her voice.  She wanted to be anonymous and feels that she has always been more of a writer.  Blair launched the Elevate Pharmacy Virtual Summit in 2017 to share other pharmacists' voices.   Pharmacist-led clinical services can impact quality metrics and make a positive impact on ROI for pharmacy services.  Blair mentioned 3 different models:   Physician's office path  Pharmacy-based path  Patient-pay path Blair will be teaching the 4 Pillars of Pharmapreneurial Success during the Elevate Pharmacy Virtual Summit.     We need to hear pharmacists share what's working for them and the impact they are having. Blair will introduce Summit participants to some amazing pharmacists. Click this link to register for the October 2021 Elevate Pharmacy Virtual Summit. Pharmacy students and other healthcare professionals are welcome to attend the Elevate Pharmacy Virtual Summit too.  Sign up for Blair's newsletter through her website to learn about upcoming events and opportunities.   Pharmapreneur Academy has a great team, including someone who will help pharmacists sell their services.  Pharmacists have a hard time selling without feeling “salesy.”   Blair is from a small town in NE Arkansas.  She talked about imposter syndrome.  Blair was self-conscious about her accent at first.  Now, she owns it!  She had a limiting belief that people would perceive her as “less than” because of her accent.  Personal and career development has helped her move past her limiting beliefs.   I mentioned the book Own Your Greatness by Lisa Orbé-Austin and Dr. Richard Orbé-Austin.  In Own Your Greatness, Drs. Orbé-Austin talk about “ANTS” = automatic negative thoughts and how to overcome them.    Blair wants to found a non-profit foundation to help pharmacists learn how to show up, demonstrate their value, and be an advocate at the national level.   Listen to the end of the interview for Blair's answers to the following 5 questions: What is the biggest challenge you face in creating an online conference?  What's the best thing that's happened since you started the Elevate Pharmacy Virtual Summit?   What's the best thing that's happened since you started the Pharmapreneur Academy?   What's the best piece of advice anyone in the pharmacy world has ever given you?  Other than imposter syndrome, what's one hidden pitfall in pharmacy that prevents pharmacists from succeeding? In this episode of An Unconventional Life, Dr. Lisa Orbé-Austin shares her traumatizing doctoral experience with Dr. Russell Strickland. Having a difficult advisor always makes the dissertation journey longer and more perilous. But having an absentee advisor? An advisor who then threatens to sue you when you finally switch to another advisor? For Dr. Orbé-Austin, the experience added two years to her doctoral studies and sent her careening into a dead-end job that was only tenuously connected to her degree. Fortunately, an epiphanous moment at work jolted her into leaving that job behind, without knowing what might lie ahead. This leap is faith was rewarded with a more fulfilling job, that gave her time to grow her private practice, which motivated her to grow a vibrant community through public appearances, speaking, and writing. As Dr. Orbé-Austin put it, "there are a lot of really great opportunities for academics." You simply have to get out there, "just really be human," and the opportunities will flow.
