Are you worried your teen doubts themselves no matter how hard they work? Do they brush off compliments or beat themselves up when things don't go perfectly? In this powerful episode, Dr. Lisa Orbé-Austin, psychologist and author of Your Child's Greatness, joins Colleen to explore how imposter syndrome shows up in teens—and how parents can help prevent it. Lisa shares how imposter syndrome stems from not internalizing success, overvaluing others, and defaulting to perfectionism. Drawing from personal stories—including her daughter's fencing journey—Lisa highlights the importance of embracing failure, savoring small wins, and teaching your child to develop a growth mindset. You'll hear heartfelt insights about helping your child build resilience and why internalizing success matters just as much as achieving it. Dr. Lisa Orbé-Austin is a licensed psychologist and executive coach. She earned her doctorate in counseling psychology from Columbia University. Her expertise on impostor syndrome is regularly sought by the media, and she has appeared in outlets such as the Financial Times, the TODAY show, Good Morning America, Forbes, HuffPost, Refinery29, and more. Dr. Orbé-Austin has been an invited speaker at various national conferences. Her first book, Own Your Greatness: Overcome Impostor Syndrome, Beat Self-Doubt, and Succeed in Life (Ulysses Press, 2020) coauthored with her partner, Dr. Richard Orbé-Austin, was a finalist for the Foreword INDIES Book Award. Her second book, Your Unstoppable Greatness: Break Free of Impostor Syndrome, Cultivate Your Agency, and Achieve Your Ultimate Career Goals H(Ulysses Press, 2022) is focused on dealing with the systemic dynamics that keep impostor syndrome in place and how to directly combat those dynamics. Here are three inspiring takeaways from this conversation: Failure is not the enemy—it's the classroom. Helping your teen reframe failure as part of the growth process builds resilience and self-belief. Let them fail safely, and support their emotional regulation afterward. Celebrate the small wins. Whether it's improving by one point or making it through a tough day, acknowledging progress helps your teen internalize success and develop confidence in their abilities. Model and nurture self-worth. Teens learn by watching. When you savor your own wins and embrace your imperfections, you give your child permission to do the same—and combat imposter syndrome from the inside out. What if small shifts in the way you parent could help prevent Imposter Syndrome in your child before it even starts? Dr. Lisa Orbé-Austin is joining me this week to help parents learn how to raise a child who trusts in their own abilities, values, and worth.   In this episode we explore:   - What imposter syndrome actually is (and what it isn't!) from a scientific and psychological perspective.   - Why it's common to see self-sabotaging behaviors in people who are experiencing Imposter Syndrome - and what you can do to help you or your kids combat this.   - The impact of rigid versus growth mindset on children as they develop and grow.   - Are certain attachment patterns more prone to Imposter Syndrome?   - The types of conversations you can have with your child, and even with other adults in front of your child, that will lay the groundwork for resilience.   - Why receiving a neurodiversity diagnosis can be empowering for kids and can help combat many associated challenges, Imposter Syndrome being one of them!   - What does it mean to hyper-regulate and how does our environment reinforce this behavior? Is it more common in men or women? With certain siblings? - We're unpacking it all!   If you're someone who's ever doubted their own success, or is noticing perfectionistic tendencies in your child, this episode is packed with eye-opening takeaways you won't want to miss!     LEARN MORE ABOUT DR. Andrea shared her entrepreneurial journey, starting with her background in recruiting, hiring, and training new entrepreneurs. She noticed that many entrepreneurs faced challenges and self-doubt when they reached the "messy middle" stage of their businesses. Balancing Business Growth with Motherhood Andrea and I also touch on the challenges of balancing business growth with motherhood. I share my experience of feeling overwhelmed when my daughter was younger, and how I couldn't imagine being able to drop her off at a playdate and leave. However, I did find that my daughter became more independent over time. Andrea related to this struggle and mentioned a client who is currently dealing with sleepless nights due to her children. We agree on the importance of having grace and understanding during these challenging stages of life. The "Schedule-Plan-Do" Method Andrea introduces her method called "Schedule Plan DDo" and explains how she helps her clients delegate tasks and create processes to make their businesses more efficient. She emphasizes the importance of addressing the underlying issues, such as exhaustion, rather than just focusing on the overwhelming to-do list. Embracing Discomfort in Business Building We both agree that the reality of business building is often messy, uncomfortable, and challenging, contrary to the glamorous image portrayed on social media. We discuss the importance of embracing discomfort and pushing through it to achieve success. We normalize the feeling of unease as a sign that one is moving in the right direction. Confidence and Entrepreneurship Andrea discusses the concept of confidence and how it is not about always feeling prepared or determined. She explains that confidence is simply the willingness to feel every feeling, including frustration, anxiety, and stress. She emphasizes the importance of embracing ambiguity and uncertainty, as they are inherent in entrepreneurship. The Importance of Support and Positive Mindset Andrea highlights the significance of seeking support from coaches, mentors, and communities. She mentions a study by Harvard Business Review that found businesses that sought support were more likely to succeed. We agree that reframing negative thoughts and focusing on the positive can make a significant difference in one's mindset and overall success. Overcoming Self-Doubt and Pricing Challenges We discuss the importance of staying in the game and overcoming self-doubt in order to achieve success in business. Andrea mentions the antidotes to negative self-talk and catastrophizing, which include surrounding yourself with supportive people who can counter those thoughts. We also discuss the issue of pricing and how it is often tied to one's self-worth. Andrea suggests that the price you charge reflects the transformation you provide to your clients. Moving Beyond the Messy Middle We highlight the need to think big and move beyond the messy middle, where many entrepreneurs get stuck. Andrea believes in offering her clients a runway to find their extraordinary potential in their business and themselves. To find Andrea and learn more about her work, you can visit her website and listen to her podcast, "Time to Level Up." She also invites you to download the introduction and first chapter of her upcoming book for valuable insights. You can schedule a call with her through her website or reach out to her on Instagram. In the 1970s, two female professors at Oberlin College coined the phrase “imposter phenomenon” to capture that feeling of intense self doubt and fear of being discovered as a fraud in the workplace. Their published paper on the topic has since spawned an industry of seminars, self-help, and empowerment. And while today, it feels like everyone suffers from “imposter syndrome,” some experts argue that people should not be saddled with a deficit model that labels them as “imposters.” We'll talk about imposter syndrome and hear from you: Have you ever felt like a fraud? Guests: Jodi-Ann Burey, writer and speaker - Burey is the co-author, of the Harvard Business Review article "Stop Telling Women They Have Imposter Syndrome" Leslie Jamison, author and essayist - Jamison wrote the recent New Yorker article "Not Fooling Anyone" about imposter syndrome. Maria Glukhovsky has been a pharmacist for the past twelve years, clinical educator across many disease states, and a clinical instructor at a Doctor of Pharmacy Program. She taught many diabetes and hypertension seminars to her patients over the years and has discovered everyone needs support and encouragement to succeed in their journey to better health. She is a prescription monograph reviewer and editor at a top tele-health company, Plushcare.com, a contributing author for PACS (www.panicandanxiety.org), and a contributing author to Thrive Global. She loves medical writing and contributing to projects that will impact others to make a difference. She has recently published a children's book to promote mental health in children and their self-esteem, called Finny's Greatest Discovery.  She prides herself in helping and supporting patients and everyone around her in any way she can and fights to help them in any way she can, whether it is for the cost of their medication or the disease state they are facing.  She has a passion for creating highest-in-class continuing medical education and touching and improving lives by educating health care providers that ultimately results in delivering the best medical care to patients around the world. Highlights from the interview How did Maria get started in writing?   While a community pharmacist, she created patient-friendly resources.  Then, she became a part-time freelance medical writer.  As her writing career progressed, she became a full-time writer. Advice Maria gives pharmacists she speaks to who are interested in medical writing:   Don't underestimate the experience you already have.  As a pharmacist, you already have a great foundation for your ability to write.  Her favorite topic to write about is mental health.  She likes making an impact on others.   Maria shared her experience with freelance writing websites.  It was an entry point at one time that led to more clients and word-of-mouth referrals.   Maria has experience creating CME (continuing medical education) on a range of topics, including hypertension, diabetes, lifestyle modification, osteoporosis, breast cancer screening, and mental health resilience.  Her content can be found on websites, in presentations, and on social media.   Many US Veterans suffer from loneliness.  It is important to acknowledge Veterans in public, ask how they are doing, and thank them for their service.  My Dad (Kim's Dad) is a combat Veteran.  See the images of Veterans wearing special hats in the show notes (blogpost) for episode 131 on thepharmacistsvoice.com/podcast. Maria and her daughter Juliana Grace wrote a book together.  It's called Finny's Greatest Discovery.  The messages in the book can start a conversation with a child about being different, bullying, and self-worth.  It is written in kid-friendly language.  My favorite sentence is, “He was wonderfully made.”   Maria and Juliana Grace are working on a second book about good deeds multiplying and making the world a better place.  Goal completion date is summer 2022.   Maria also used her voice to create a poison prevention program for children with autism.  Maria encourages pharmacists to create/deliver poison prevention lessons at schools and provide students with poison prevention stickers and the Poison Help Line Number 1-800-222-1222.  Don't underestimate the value of just showing up to a school to give a presentation.  You could save a life! You've got to develop the ability to feel all that stuff, have your cheeks be as red as a baboon's butt, and walk out there and do it anyway.”   “You need celebration and support so that you can do those things that you deserve and you want in your life.”   “When you realize you can change the filter in your mind, at any time, you can silence the bullshit you've been saying to yourself.”   “Instead of visualizing the finish line, which is what we all want to jump to in life, right? Visualize all the crappy, horrible things you have to do, in order to get to the finish line. [...] If you just visualize the good stuff, you are not preparing yourself to do the work that it takes to get that stuff.”   “You are not responsible for the shit that was done to you. Period. You survived it, which shows you're worth celebrating, but you are responsible for healing, for changing and for who you become next.”   “Know that no matter what, you are going to be okay. Because you have your own back.”   “Your relationship with yourself is the foundation of every single relationship that you have. If you don't love and respect yourself, how on earth are you going to do that for other people?”   “At any moment, you can choose to change, but no one's going to come in and do it for you. You got to look yourself in the mirror and you gotta say ‘I see you. I see that you're not happy, and I'm going to fucking do something about it.'”   Follow Mel Robbins: Website: https://melrobbins.com/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/melrobbins Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/melrobbins/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/melrobbins/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/melrobbins

Lisa Orbé-Austin, Ph.D. is a licensed psychologist and executive coach, with a focus on career advancement and leadership development. She is a co-founder and partner of Dynamic Transitions Psychological Consulting, a career and executive coaching consultancy, where she works mostly with high potential managers and executives. She earned her doctorate in Counseling Psychology from Columbia University. Her views about career advancement, job transitions, leadership, and diversity & inclusion are regularly sought by the media and she has appeared in outlets such as The New York Times, NBC News, Forbes, The Huffington Post, Refinery29, Business Insider, and Insight Into Diversity. She has also been honored as a Top Voice on LinkedIn in the area of Job Search and Careers. Dr. Orbé-Austin recently gave a TEDx talk entitled "The Impostor Syndrome Paradox." She regularly consults with organizations in the private sector, non-profits, and educational institutions in supporting their employees and senior leadership teams to address gender bias, diversity, equity, & inclusion concerns, leadership development, effective communication, team cohesion, and managing conflict. Her practice also consults to universities on the reorganization & evaluation of their career centers to enhance their efficacy and metrics, in order to improve service delivery, data analysis, and student career outcomes. Her book, Own Your Greatness: Overcome Impostor Syndrome, Beat Self-Doubt, and Succeed in Life (Ulysses Press, 2020) co-authored with her partner, Dr. Richard Orbé-Austin, was released in April 2020. In this episode… Do you feel like you're a fraud, a sham, a pretender to your own throne? Are you sure that any day now someone is going to find you out and expose you? In this episode of An Unconventional Life, Dr. Lisa Orbé-Austin shares her traumatizing doctoral experience with Dr. Russell Strickland. Having a difficult advisor always makes the dissertation journey longer and more perilous. But having an absentee advisor? An advisor who then threatens to sue you when you finally switch to another advisor? For Dr. Orbé-Austin, the experience added two years to her doctoral studies and sent her careening into a dead-end job that was only tenuously connected to her degree. Fortunately, an epiphanous moment at work jolted her into leaving that job behind, without knowing what might lie ahead. This leap is faith was rewarded with a more fulfilling job, that gave her time to grow her private practice, which motivated her to grow a vibrant community through public appearances, speaking, and writing. As Dr. Orbé-Austin put it, "there are a lot of really great opportunities for academics." You simply have to get out there, "just really be human," and the opportunities will flow.

Have you ever had the feeling that everyone else is ‘crushing it' except you? Or a nagging thought when you've accomplished something amazing and yet you feel it only happened due to sheer luck or being helped by other people? If every external indicator is that you earned your success, and yet you feel like you've faked your way into the room, you may be struggling with 'impostor syndrome'. Impostor syndrome is at work when you feel you somehow don't deserve to be where you find yourself, that you don't belong, whether it's at a university, as a manager at your place of work or in a relationship. It produces a deep sense of doubt about your own capability; you feel like you're a fraud and live with the fear that you'll be discovered or exposed as incompetent or incapable. Most studies have shown it's more common in women and disproportionately affects underrepresented minorities and immigrants. This phenomenon can prevent you from taking risks that may jeopardise your current position; it drains your confidence in your ability to achieve your goals and succeed in life; you end up either overworking to prove yourself, or self-sabotaging to avoid feelings of inadequacy; you can't enjoy success because you feel it's unearned; you underestimate yourself while overestimating the capacities of others. According to authors Lisa and Richard Orbe-Austin, it can “feed feelings of anxiety, low self-esteem, depression and frustration due to the thoughts and behaviors that result.” In this episode, Ayanda and Dambudzo take a layperson's look and dive into the impostor phenomenon, dissecting it and breaking down how it affects people, derailing them from the joy, peace and comfort of the Lord. As we are not professional therapists, if you're struggling with impostor syndrome, or what you think may be impostor syndrome, seek the help of a professional or consult some of the resources recommended below.
