In this episode of the FitMIND FitBODY podcast, I interview the talented and inspiring Milly Clark. Milly shares her story of growing up in St. Leonard's, near a track that sparked her love for running. From a young age, she was always active, playing various sports and participating in little athletics every Saturday. Milly talks about her early years and how she loved the excitement of collecting patches and setting personal goals in athletics. She admits she hated cross country because of the long-distance pain, but she loved the quick, intense effort of shorter events. As Milly grew older, she continued to pursue her passion for running, even as her family moved around the world. She ran in Germany, Indonesia, and the USA, adapting to new places and using running as a way to cope with homesickness and stress. Milly's dedication to running led her to compete in various marathons and even qualify for the Olympics. She shares the thrill of her first marathon in Amsterdam, where she exceeded her own expectations and realised her potential to compete at the highest levels. Throughout our interview, Milly emphasises the importance of setting goals, staying motivated, and enjoying the process of running. She also highlights the significance of having a balanced life, with interests and careers outside of running, which helped her stay grounded and resilient. Tune in to hear Milly's incredible journey, her insights on running, and how she balances her passion for the sport with her career as a teacher. Whether you're an aspiring runner or simply looking for inspiration, this episode is packed with valuable lessons and motivating stories. Milly's Running tips: 1. Start Slow: Milly emphasises the importance of starting slow and steady. Just like the story of the tortoise and the hare, she believes slow and steady wins the race. It's important not to try to do too much too soon because your body needs time to adapt. 2. Be Patient: Understand that adapting to running takes time. Don't get frustrated if progress seems slow; patience is key to preventing injuries and staying motivated. 3. Don't Stress About Missing Runs: If you miss a run, it's not the end of the world. Milly shares that missing one run won't ruin your progress, so it's okay to be flexible with your schedule. 4. Enjoy Running: The most important thing for beginners is to enjoy running. Make it a fun and enjoyable activity rather than a chore. 5. Avoid Comparisons: Milly advises against comparing yourself to others. Everyone is on their own journey, so focus on your own progress and goals. 6. Set Small Goals: Setting small, achievable goals can help keep you motivated. Whether it's improving your park run time or participating in a running festival, these goals can give you something to strive for. 7. Control What You Can: Focus on what you can control, such as your own training and effort, rather than worrying about others' performances. 8. Be Organised: Milly mentions the importance of being organised. For example, laying out your running clothes the night before and having your meals prepped can make it easier to stick to your routine. 9. Stay Consistent: Consistency is crucial. Even if you run every day or have a regular training schedule, it's important to keep up with it to see progress. 10. Embrace Variety: While Milly prefers road running, she acknowledges the benefits of trying different types of runs, like trails or cross-country, to add variety and challenge to your routine. **A couple of BIG favours: 1) please like and review this podcast so more people will discover it :) 2) come on the podcast and talk about your running journey and/or refer someone you'd love me to interview (whether you know them or not :) ) Lets not keep the power of running a secret any more! Today, I chat to Bevan Does, one of the Run Culture Owl Athletes I coach. It's a great chat to listen to on the back of Pete Dutton's chat last week, as unlike Pete's injury riddled last 12 months, Bevan, started the 2021/22 athletic season with ‘big lofty goals'!..... and amazingly, he achieved all of them! Comparatively, the two chats illustrate the inevitable peaks and troughs our running journeys often take. So enjoy the listen, as Bevan, had one of those dream seasons that we all dream about! How did he do it? Maybe there are some hints that reverberate with you? …. Backstory: Bevan is a 19 year old, second year Zoology Uni student at Deakin. At the ripe old age of 4 he ran his first fun run, he then went on and showed some promise at Little Athletics but soon lost the passion for the sport from ‘middle to late' High School. I spotted Bevan 2 yrs ago at a Hastings Park run because he was the kid who could keep up with me for half of it, off just one run a week! After joining the Owls, he has reclaimed a love of the sport, cherishing the team aspect, the ‘joy' of doing ‘hard things' with others and the ‘harmony' of going for an easy run in nature. Bevan doesn't overthink training, he's great at not thinking about running at all, outside of training….he's up for anything outdoors, whether it's a hike, stand up paddle boarding, catching up with friends, riding his bike or hikes to the beach! ….and of course being a Zoology student, he loves anything animals! Over the past two years he has been incredibly patient and consistent, whilst never questioning how little training he was doing compared to others in the group. Infact, he enjoyed the balance it gave his life to do other things as a growing 19 year old! Contrary, to Bevan's mature, wholesome and grounded approach, when it comes to a race day start line he is a ‘born ‘competitor. Bevan, 'knows how to find a finish line', he relishes a challenge, is a natural racer and has fantastic composure under pressure. Anyway, enough from me, have a listen, here's Bevan Does and how he fell back in love with running and hit goals that he previously thought weren't possible.
Apparently backwards running is the newest exercise craze... so Elly puts it to the test against the kids at Bli Bli Little Athletics!Enjoy!

It was growing up in the greater Hawkesbury where Sara Klein uncovered the love for sport, adventure and the great outdoors. An introduction to Little Athletics at the age of 8 put Sara on the path for her career now as an elite athlete – going on to represent Australia at the 2019 World Championships in the 400 metre hurdler. It was a seven-year gap between that 2019 meet and her earlier appearance at the World Junior Championships. Whilst the hiatus was disheartening at times, Sara’s perspective enabled her to stay focused and ultimately achieve her goals.

Paul Murray is the host of Paul Murray Live and Saturday Edition on Sky News Australia. Paul was ‘discovered' hosting a Little Athletics carnival when he was still a teenager, which led to him hosting a national show on Triple J at the ripe old age of 14. He then moved to the NOVA Newsroom where he won a Brian White Memorial Award despite never having studied journalism. Paul shifted to breakfast radio at Triple M Sydney as a part of The Shebang with Marty Sheargold and Fifi Box before moving to nights where he hosted The Paul Murray Show which eventually became the drive show we did together, Paul & Rach. Paul left FM radio to pursue a career in talkback, hosting his own show at 2UE and he's now at the helm of the highest rating show on Sky News, Paul Murray Live. In this episode Paul Murray talks about why he was drawn to talkback radio as a kid, why making the move to AM wasn't everything he'd dreamed it would be and why failing your HSC isn't the end of the world.
