Welcome to another episode of the Testing Peers Podcast. Chris, David, Russell and Simon talk about one of the big buzzwords in the industry at present being the term of Quality Engineering, what it means, how it differentiates from "Testing" and what it means for the future. For the banter, Russell asks us all what our favourite pizza toppings are, unsurprisingly there is talk of "it depends", and pretty much every topping is mentioned from the peers. We start by talking about what Quality Engineering is and whether there is such a role of a Quality Engineer. This takes us on a slight rabbit hole around job titles. Is there more to Quality Engineering than just Testing being re-branded? Does it offer more around holistic quality?A couple of mentions were made during the episode. The Quality Engineering Charter which has been launched in 2024Jit Gosai's Quality Engineering NewsletterWhere do you sit on the discipline of Quality Engineering?ContactUs@TestingPeers.comTwitter (https://twitter.com/testingpeers)LinkedIn (https://www.linkedin.com/company/testing-peers)Instagram (https://www.instagram.com/testingpeers/)Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/TestingPeers)We're also now on GoodPods, check it out via the mobile app storesIf you like what we do and are able to, please visit our Patreon to explore how you could support us going forwards: https://www.patreon.com/testingpeersSaffron QA is a provider of recruitment and consultancy services, exclusively for the software testing industry. You can find out more at https://saffronqa.co.uk/ or on LinkedInSupport the Show.

He is a retired Project Engineer, Process Engineer and Quality Engineer.During Brian's first year of trading, he made the common mistake of underestimating what it takes to be a trader and didn't pay the markets or this occupation the proper respect. As a result, he paid a hefty price of over $45,000, loads of personal capital and nearly lost his marriage over it.Fortunately, Brian had the Quality Assurance experience working in manufacturing. When he applied the Quality Assurance methodology to his trading, he found that it works amazingly well, just like it has in the business world for decades to get struggling operations under control and predictably profitable. He then also applied his business acumen to further build that solid foundation that nearly all traders don't get to really give him a solid base and peace of mind. Brian teaches these same success practices and methods to traders so that they can fill the gap in their training as well and enjoy relaxed, profitable trading too.Brian's years of experience Quality Assurance and Business Consulting allow him to provide unique, effective and refreshing resources to the traders of the world. His focus is helping traders achieve self-sufficiency through the application of Quality and Business principles and practices that result in proficiency and success.Follow Brian on TwitterSubscribe to Consistent ProfitsInside Out TradingAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy

Originally uploaded December 15th. Faces of Manufacturing is a new show to Michigan Business Network. Cindy Kangas, Executive Director, CAMC, Capital Area Manufacturing Council, Lansing, Michigan, co-hosts with Joy Wagner, HR Manager of Granger Waste Services, also Lansing. Cindy and Joy strive to share the corporate culture, personal stories, and unique personalities of those making a living in manufacturing today, in Michigan. With that in mind, this month they connected with Jerry Norris, who obtained a B.S. in Statistics from the University of Michigan, with a focus on Computer Science. He began his career with the Unisys Corporation as a Quality Engineer and ISO 9000 Lead Auditor in 1988. Throughout the years, he moved up through the ranks of the quality profession (i.e. Quality Manager, Director of Quality, and VP of Quality). In 1988 as a Quality Engineer and Lead Auditor, he began developing a software product to help manage compliance activities. Jerry developed software for ISO standards and related compliance systems for all industries, before he decided to start his own company, jadian incorporated in 1998. In 2014 jadian was sold. The next logical step was to start a new software company developing a member directory of compliance professionals. He served as the CEO of GAIA, LLC, which operate globally with customers in over 50 countries helping members connect based on expertise and vicinity. GAIA has evolved into a software company supporting start-ups with an emphasis on mapping. Jerry now serves as the CEO of the Fledge, a radically inclusive ideation and maker space, incubator and accelerator located in Lansing, MI. He also serves as the Chairman for the GAIA Solutions, and the Fledge Music Group. He spent 5 years as a “Gatekeeper” for the Business Acceleration Fund working with the Lansing Economic Area Partnership (LEAP) and has a deep understanding of the entrepreneurial ecosystem and the community at large. Jerry's expertise includes software development, quality management, food safety management, automotive and aerospace related quality management, environmental protection and management, safety systems, regenerative economies, LEAN communities, blockchain, smart contracts and WEB3. He has worked in the following fields: telecommunications, automotive, furniture, food safety, environmental management, economic development, human rights, labor law, life sciences, advance manufacturing, plastics, consulting, organizational development, systems theory / thinking, sustainability, regenerative economies, crypto ecosystems and more. » Visit MBN website: www.michiganbusinessnetwork.com/ » Subscribe to MBN's YouTube: www.youtube.com/channel/UCqNX… » Like MBN: www.facebook.com/mibiznetwork » Follow MBN: twitter.com/MIBizNetwork/ » MBN Instagram: www.instagram.com/mibiznetwork/

Learning how to use your technical aptitude to propel your career is our focus for this Episode. We welcome back Chazz Hoskins. Chazz was featured on Episode 82 of the Cameron-Brooks podcast. This podcast is a career check-in, but as a reminder, Chazz is a former Air Force Development Engineer who transitioned to Lam Research. Chazz's last job in the Air Force was as a data analyst working on missile telemetry within a fighter squadron. Lam is foundational to the semiconductor industry, and they make the machines that make some of the most sophisticated semiconductors in the world. From the Career Conference, Chazz was able to evaluate multiple employment offers, so we spent a couple of minutes exploring why he chose to launch his business career at Lam. He started at Lam as a Pilot Manufacturing Engineer. His job was to manage the component supply chain, quality surveillance, contingencies for faulty components, safety and cost implications, and create documentation for manufacturing procedures. Being a Pilot Manufacturing Engineer, he orchestrated the first build of the newest products that helped the company compete with the latest innovation. What is your problem-solving methodology? Considering the importance of his role "on the bleeding edge of technology," I wanted to understand better how someone goes from doing missile telemetry in the Air Force to building some of the most important semiconductor machines in the world, as those two things are not related. It all comes back to knowing how to use your technical aptitude to propel your career. If you took nothing else away from this podcast, remember this: in an interview where you are a non-traditional candidate, be prepared to describe your problem-solving methodology. Regardless of the industry or product, your leadership in problem-solving is what corporate America is looking for in the technical JMO. Stay Connected to Cameron-Brooks! His next role brought him to Silfex, a division of Lam. Silfex supplies the entire semiconductor industry with critical, high-purity silicone components. Silfex was building a new plant in Dayton, Ohio, and Chazz took a shot at the Quality Engineer position. To prepare for the role, he called Rob Davis, one of the Transition Coaches at Cameron-Brooks, and Rob helped to prepare him for the interview. He aced the interview and got the job. As a Quality Engineer, he ensures "no bad products escape the plant." He said if that happens, it can cause millions in damage to Lam's customers. Do you want to make a successful military-to-business transition like Chazz? Do you want to be in a top leadership role at a leading company? If you do, you don't need to reinvent the wheel to help you get there. You can follow former military officers who have become key business leaders' steps for career success. If you're interested in learning more about your transition options, contact us. Welcome to the inaugural episode of Automation Explanation, an Agile Thought Podcast, where you will learn about quality through automated testing and its place in modern software development. This week, your hosts, Antwan Maddox and Greg Burdick are starting this series of shows to discuss some of the challenges and areas of improvement related to quality engineering. Today, they are diving deep into the history and role of Quality Engineers, their place in Development Teams, and how they fit into Agile. Key Takeaways A brief history of test automation. Test automation has existed for more than two decades. At the beginning of automation, users reached a point where the time to do automation outweighed the benefits. There were also some environmental issues, where some development environments were incompatible when running Scripts. The next generation of automation tools replaced the previous generation. What is a quality engineer? What are their responsibilities? The acceptance of Agile methodology has played a role in changing the role of a tester. A Quality Engineer is someone with a strong foundation in manual testing and test framework development Are clients looking for quality engineers? There is a big need for Quality Engineers currently in the market even though there is always going to be a need for a manual tester. Modern DevOps plays a big factor, emphasizing continuous innovation and delivery, leading to more frequent integration of code and deployments to the production environment. What should a Quality Engineer focus on learning more about DevOps or Agile? First, a Quality Engineer has to learn a programming language. Second, he needs to learn how to automate the front end. Third, a Quality Engineer needs to have more intimate knowledge of the back end. Stage four is about DevOps automation, and every Quality Engineer should know about it. How do Quality Engineers fit in Agile? Quality Engineers fit into the Development Team very intimately and they are part of the cycle from the beginning to the end. Quality engineers are key to creating testable and automatable software. They need to know about the application roadmap. Quality engineers have to be included in the software development process. Everyone should be involved in automation. The organization needs to be ready for automation. To deliver an application is not just delivering a bunch of features, it is also delivering a testable and automatable code, quality is a must when delivering software. What is Quality Engineering about? Quality Engineering is not about velocity or defects, it is about how software is put together and organized for the development effort. A Quality engineer assures that there will be a low stress and anxiety deployment. A Quality Engineer is constantly growing and learning. Quality engineers should be hired in pairs. In this episode of “The Journey of My Mother's Son” podcast, I sit down to talk with Mike Latona. Another one of my former players, Mike Latona is now a Quality Engineer. Just like last week's guest, Collin Fesi, we were able to reconnect with Mike in Maryland. What a blessing that night was to not just see one of my former players, but two in the same night. Mike and Collin played for our organization a few years apart, but it was neat to see how they connected immediately knowing that they had that Berkshire Baseball experience in common. I hope that they stay in contact now that they know each other. I always say that when we reconnect with my former players on this journey, it truly does fill my heart with joy. To see these kids now and witness how they've grown into productive members of our society and just quality humans overall is incredibly special for me. Mike reflects on his playing days within the Berkshire organization and how it impacted him socially to meet and play with players from outside of his school district. We also talk about how those life lessons on the field continue to help him today in his career and beyond.
Hello and welcome to another episode of the Testing Peers podcast. On this episode, we discuss the important and often talked about topic of Job Titles within the Testing/Quality space. Before diving into the main topic, Chris leads with the banter and gets us thinking what our Superhero alter-ego's may be. You're in for a treat, but think it's safe to say, we won't be getting our own Marvel or DC comic/film with these... But maybe there is a new SWAG opportunity here if we can find someone to help us with designing some new imagesTo start the main topic, the peers all share what their very first testing job titles were. Every thing from Software QA Engineer to QA Technician (Temp) to Test Analyst and Test Engineer, so what's clear is even with all being in similar roles, there is always some randomness with the job titles. Being a gatekeeper was a big part of all of our roles and looking back now, we can all see the damage it could do to the reputation of Testing. We then talk about what the importance is for job titles, both internally within one company and also across the industry. There is a lot of ambiguity in job titles, partly because it's not possible to describe exactly what the role entails. The obvious topic comes up which is the whole debate between QA and Tester and Quality Engineer and what suits our role best.Do we need an industry standardised set of job titles? Are there better ways to share what we do so everyone understands what we do?What titles have you had, do the titles fit what you do?We hope you found the discussion useful and would love to hear your feedback.ContactUs@TestingPeers.comTwitter (https://twitter.com/testingpeers)LinkedIn (https://www.linkedin.com/company/testing-peers)Instagram (https://www.instagram.com/testingpeers/)Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/TestingPeers)We're also now on GoodPods, check it out via the mobile app storesIf you like what we do and are able to, please visit our Patreon to explore how you could support us going forwards: https://www.patreon.com/testingpeersSaffron QA is a provider of recruitment and consultancy services, exclusively for the software testing industry. You can find out more at https://saffronqa.co.uk/ or on LinkedIn at https://www.linkedin.com/company/saffron-qa/Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/testingpeers)

It was an incredible pleasure to have Cindy Lim as our most recent guest for Recharge: Talking New Energy. Cindy is the CEO of Keppel Infrastructure Holdings in Singapore, and apart from being a very accomplished female leader in Energy, she has perhaps one of the most interesting progressions in her career. Cindy started work as a Quality Engineer, before moving to HR, and rising in the ranks to become a CEO of one of Singapore's longest standing companies. Cindy's powerful empathy has no doubt, not just enabled her to be successful in her career to date, but to also navigate the transition of such a large business in the changing global energy landscape. There were some deep and emotional points in our discussion where Cindy emphasised what giving back to community has done for her, and where Singapore as a nation could improve its position as an eco-leader, particularly in the recycling space. This is a must listen for people who have a real curiosity about Singapore's position as a thought leader for new energies, females in leadership, and how empathy is critical for one's success. Enjoy the episode!

In This Episode... Our CEO Renaud Anjoran (whose background is as a Certified ISO 9001 & 14001 lead auditor, ASQ certified Quality Engineer, and Quality Manager) discusses the Quality Management Process, including its 3 main sections: Planning, QC, and Improvement. This process allows buyers to plan ahead to assure good quality from the start of the project, use real data to pinpoint and eliminate quality issues they're getting from a supplier, and to stop issues from recurring in future by putting in place processes and systems that prevent the issues from reoccurring in future. The takeaway from this episode is a proven QM process which you can use to improve your own quality, and it's based on this graphic which is referred to throughout: Show Notes 00:00 - Summarising the quality management process and its basis in the Juran trilogy, namely the planning, control, and improvement phases. 06:34 - What benefits do implementing such a quality management plan provide to buyers over those that don't pay as much attention to quality management activities? Instead of flying blind, the QM process allows improvement to processes which would otherwise keep throwing up quality issues. Measuring data also allows better control over component suppliers. Overall, poor performance across the supply chain has a negative effect on your business, not necessarily theirs. 11:04 - Best practices for getting started with quality management if you're starting from scratch. As a minimum, document your requirements (what you and your customers will or will not accept) as this allows you to point out if a supplier has done something wrong that deviates from them! Without this, you can see how improving quality may be an issue if a supplier disagrees with your assessment. Based on the requirements, the second key best practice would be to do some QC inspections (including product reliability & compliance) - fundamentally, do the products reach your expectations? 17:56 - Can 'small buyers' affect change? If you're a very small buyer, let's say 0.1% of a factory's output, for example, driving change in your suppliers may not be possible as they will not listen to you. However, if you account for 10, 20, or 30%, for instance, then it's a different story. 18:43 - Do quality recurring quality issues leave small buyers like some FBA sellers in a difficult position? What can you do to protect your business and improve quality? Would it be as drastic as needing to switch to a new, better supplier? Assuming the factory is capable, it may be a design, material, or component issue, so this is worth looking into when you have some quality and defect information. *** Going through each step of the quality management one by one to illustrate the process that buyers can follow in detail. 21:59 - Quality planning Know your customer expectations (a good specification sheet and drawings will be helpful) Set objectives (approving samples is an important step here and boundary samples may be effective if you have a little tolerance between two points) Qualify supplier & sub-suppliers (we refer to this episode on different supplier types) Audit systems and processes, find risks (FMEA), plan accordingly 28:51 - Quality control Product/material inspections (product inspections can be before during and after production, although DUPRO is favorable as there is then time to make changes before all products are finished) Laboratory testing (some samples are sent to labs for reliability/compliance/safety testing, especially if they cannot be done on-site at the manufacturer's facility) 31:00 - Quality improvement Use problems found during auditing or QC to drive improvements Set controls on identified risks (this could be a preventive maintenance plan, for example) Keep updating the quality standard as and when new issues occur, also the risk analysis for when new risks are found, and feed back to the supplier if there are issues with materials or components coming from a certain sub-supplier Extra information you may find helpful Explore this topic in more detail in this blog post over on QualityInspection.org: How Quality Planning Drives QC and Process Improvement Get in touch with us Connect with us on LinkedIn Send us a tweet @sofeast Prefer Facebook? Read today’s show notes on https://www.evnewsdaily.com Well good morning, good afternoon and good evening, wherever you are in the world, hello and welcome to the Tuesday 17th July edition of EV News Daily. It’s Martyn Lee here with the news you need to know about electric cars and the move towards sustainable transport. NEWS IN BRIEF: Renault has confirmed the Australian dealers that will sell the Zoe EV, while the electric hatchback's list price of $47,990 before on-road costs has also been announced. Tesla is extending free unlimited Supercharging for Model S and Model X with referral program- but only for another two week A photo posted online showed the Performance Model 3 with 116MPGe, which less than the 130MPGe for the long range version Nissan's design boss Alfonso Albaisa has been talking about the next Nissan GT-R, and said the engineering team is still developing the basic architecture of the program, and debating how much electric assistance the powertrain will consist of, whether it will be a plug-in hybrid, a fully electric car or remain powered by a conventional combustion engine. FROM #1 CRITIC TO #1 FAN Sandy Munroe made a YouTube video of a first release Model 3 and didn’t hold back. Not a fan of the fit & finish [audio clip] But now having driven it, and taken it apart, someone has changed their tune. He raves about the electronics….[audio clip]…the batteries…[audio clip]…and he eats some humble pie…[audio clip] RUMOUR MILL: TESLA TO ADOPT CCS? Should we start with a rumour? I report on unsubstantiated rumours so little on this show but here's one that I've been asked about over the last few days, and then yesterday another thing crops up on Reddit, so let's speculate. So let’s start with Reddit: A German Tesla supporter named "Tesla Klaus" spoke to a Tesla technician during a Supercharger stop in Germany, who was at the Supercharger to replace two cables. However Tesla Klaus claims the engineer told hi, he's also doing preparations to add an additional cable to the Superchargers. Those additional cables will have CCS connectors (the chargers will have two cables, the existing Type 2 and then the new one with CCS Combo 2 plug). That's needed because the European Model 3 will have a CCS port. Cables and Connectors will be water cooled to support more power. Reservoir with coolant will be placed on top of chargers Here in Europe Tesla uses a slightly modified Type 2 connector for Supercharging. Tesla had to add the GB/T DC connector to S and X and did that by adding a charge port door, however the Model 3 charge port area is large enough to fit the Combo 2 connector. Japan favours CHAdeMO but Tesla doesn't support. However CCS Combo 2 can deliver charging up to 350kW, up to 1000v and 500A. In the European Union according to the Directive 2014/94/EU[26] all high power DC charging points set up after November 18th 2017 shall be equipped for interoperability purposes at least with Combo 2 connectors. Elon has hinted at Supercharger V3 in the past. There are screenshots of a Model 3 in factory mode which show that Model 3 is capable of DC charging with a higher rate than the current superchargers support. S & X will probably also support this once their battery setup gets an upgrade. ENGINEERING BOSS SAYS EVS "SINGLE MOST IMPORTANT TRANSFORMATIONS OF ALL TIME” "Joe Kaeser, global chief executive of the engineering giant Siemens, said up to almost a third of jobs could be lost as the transition from combustion engines to electric cars takes place over the next decade, in what will be “one of the single most important transformations of all time”. writing in today's Guardian newspaper Angela Monaghan: "Speaking over the weekend at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, Kaeser said it would be a key challenge for industry leaders to build the car of the future responsibly and get the transformation right, because ultimately many traditional roles will disappear in the short-term." He says: "It may cause quite a dip in employment, because if you have 20-30 less value chain, then … you have 20%-30% fewer jobs. That is how it has been in the first three industrial revolutions. There has always been a significant change in employment. And then by enabling growth, it actually turned out that more jobs were created. Higher growth was achieved and obviously more people moved out of poverty and had better lives." https://www.theguardian.com/business/2018/jul/15/global-workforce-will-be-decimated-by-fourth-revolution-says-siemens-boss TESLA MODEL 3 ROLLOVER CRASH HAS A GOOD ENDING FOR THE DRIVER "Rollover accidents for electric vehicles are generally regarded to be rare. That’s mostly due to the fact that they have large and heavy batteries at the bottom of the vehicle, producing a low centre of gravity. Just last May, Tesla showed off how it tried to make a Model X rollover without success." reports JC Torres for Slashgear: "“I thought the car performed spectacularly from a safety standpoint. The driver seat airbags protected her during the roll including one underneath the steering wheel for her legs which I didn’t even know was there. As you can see from the photos the cabin was completely intact. The windshield and glass roof obviously shattered but they did not intrude into the cabin at all.”" Redditor StapleGun shared pics of his blue Model 3 whose front was pretty much totaled. Especially the driver side front wheel that hit the freeway median with such force that it sheared the wheel off. But the surprise was how the inside of the car was, for all intents and purposes, totally fine. https://www.slashgear.com/tesla-model-3-rollover-crash-has-a-good-ending-for-the-driver-15537706/ 20% OF PARKING SPACES SHOULD BE CONVERTED TO EV CHARGE POINTS "Local authorities should allocate one in five parking spaces to be converted into electric vehicle (EV) charge points by 2025 to prepare for the increasing uptake of zero-emission vehicles, a report has recommended." according to James Fossdyke for Motor1.com: "The National Infrastructure Commission’s study into the UK’s economic infrastructure says councils should turn five percent of parking spaces, including on-street spaces, into electric vehicle charging bays by 2020, before upping that to 20 percent by 2025." "The study also suggests regulating charging bays" https://uk.motor1.com/news/252353/parking-spaces-become-charging-points/ FORMULA E TEACHES CAR COMPANIES HOW TO MAKE ELECTRIC VEHICLES Forbes sat down with James Barclay, director for the Panasonic Jaguar Racing team, to talk about Jaguar’s involvement with Formula E and how the series will help the automaker continue to develop electric vehicles. "We’re already seeing real-world learnings from our activity in Formula E that apply to our production cars: the construction of some of the hardware items like the e-motors and inverter, the materials we use and the way we package them, the weight that we can achieve in the race car, how we maximize efficiency through software and control systems, how we optimize the whole powertrain, from the inverter to the e-motors. Fundamentally Formula E is about making cars go as fast as they can for as long as they can. From a production standpoint, that’s perfect because if you can achieve that in a customer car, it means the customer can drive longer and faster, too." https://www.forbes.com/sites/jaclyntrop/2018/07/16/formula-e-teaches-car-companies-how-to-make-electric-vehicles/#6ea9b33d1ae7 LAMBORGHINI AVENTADOR V12 HYBRID TO LAUNCH A GENERATION "Lamborghini will embrace electrification in its next-generation flagship supercar due early in the next decade, and in the models that will follow" reports Steve Walker for AutoExpress: "Plans are afoot not just for a V12 hybrid in the Aventador replacement that will come first but for a V10 hybrid in the next Huracan and a fourth Lamborghini model line could also be under consideration. The V12 hybrid Aventador replacement had already been confirmed to Auto Express by Lamborghini Research and Development boss Maurizio Reggiani back in January. An all-electric Lamborghini isn’t part of the firm’s immediate plans, but an EV is an option beyond the next generation hybrid supercar" Lamborghini CEO Stefano Domenicali: ""When we’re talking about performance, the killer of performance is weight. But the more you go for new technology the more you have to counterbalance to ensure you keep the weight under control." http://www.autoexpress.co.uk/lamborghini/102454/new-lamborghini-aventador-v12-hybrid-to-launch-a-generation-of-electrified-lambos LONDON'S BIGGEST ON-DEMAND CAR CLUB IS GOING ALL ELECTRIC "Zipcar announced today that it has started making Volkswagen e-Golfs available. Welcome to episode #018 of Custom Made and today I’m joined by two guests from Dialexa - Sarah Reid, Vice President of Design Research and Quality Assurance Engineer, David Ferguson. Sarah has become a regular on Custom Made discussing topics on User Research and User Experience Design. Sarah’s fascination with how design and psychology interact has led her on a relentless pursuit to shape user experiences that enable elegant solutions to complex problems. Her specialties in web and UX design include layout, interaction and aesthetic design for websites and software products. David is a tenacious Quality Engineer and knowledge seeker at Dialexa, with over a decade of experience focused on quality and scrum methodologies. His background includes leading quality and support initiatives in projects spanning financial, automotive and real-estate industries. Here at Dialexa, David believes in quality as an initiative that should be implemented through varying involvement throughout the lifecycle of a software project, from research and problem-solving to delivery and handoff. By being involved in a project early and often, David and the Quality Assurance team are able to identify the customer and sustain empathy for the customer's needs, concerns, and goals, becoming the voice of the customer throughout the software development lifecycle. During development, David believes in working alongside the development team and project leads. David's goal is to minimize the need for expensive manual testing and implement quality initiatives that are repeatable and sustainable as a platform or application scales and matures. On this weeks episode Sarah, David and myself are discussing what is required during product development to ensure that your product has the best possible chance of being successful - providing a better user experience, increasing adoption and usage, and ultimately delivering positive ROI to your business. By having Quality Assurance (QA) and the end users represented throughout the product design and development process, rather than have QA as a silo’d team that does software checks towards the end of development, you can ensure that quality is built into your new product. After all what might appear to be a bug once the product is deployed, could actually be software working as intended, but not actually designed and developed with the user’s actual needs in mind. In this episode, I interview former Navy LT, Lydia Barrett. Lydia graduated from Tulane University with a BS in Biomedical Engineering and served five years in the Navy as a Nuclear Power Surface Warfare Officer. She transitioned from the Navy to Stryker Medical as a Quality Engineer in early 2017. Our conversation focuses on her move from Navy Nuclear Power Officer to Medical Device Quality Engineer. Lydia does an exceptional job of explaining her role as a Quality Engineer and how she interacts with and impacts key leaders in marketing, sales, and engineering as well as with customers. I learned that she is a problem-solving consultant. Lydia's advice to those establishing themselves in business includes: Be approachable. Communicate often and, when in doubt, pick up the phone instead of emailing. Be "team" versus "I" oriented. Always bring pen and paper to a conversation or meeting. In our January 2017 podcast, Tim Higgins, President of the In2:InThinking Network, www.in2in.org, and Quality Engineer for NASA, based in Los Angeles, California, shares insights from his 30+ years of studying, applying, and illuminating The Deming System of Profound Knowledge®. Following a brief career as an educator in a public school system, Tim shifted careers and joined the rocket engine industry, employed by “Rocketdyne” (a division of Rockwell, then Boeing, followed by Pratt & Whitney, and now integrated with Aerojet). Along the way, Tim was introduced to Dr. Deming's theory of management and, upon reflection, realized his inclinations against grades in school, while serving as a teacher, could be explained through his appreciation of Profound Knowledge. For a short time, Tim was a member of Rocketdyne's TQM Office, where he was introduced to the thinking of Genichi Taguchi and partnered with peers to create Rocketdyne's pioneering “InThinking Roadmap” curriculum. The subsequent focus on thinking modes led to his contributions as a co-founder of the In2:InThinking Network, a non-profit for which he now serves as president. In 2009, Tim crossed the employment bridge from the contractor side (“Rocketdyne”) to the customer side (NASA), inspired the proposition of assuming a role that would help Rocketdyne become a better contractor. Guided by his extraordinary experiences as a quality advisor, Tim has led study sessions for Dr. Deming's The New Economics for the past 12+ years, under the sponsorship of “Rocketdyne”. Beginning in 2017, these sessions, comprised of six 90-minute conference calls, are being sponsored by The Deming Institute. Led by Tim, participants share their interpretations and questions of The New Economics, chapter-by-chapter, covering 2 chapters in each 2-hour session. A few highlights from Tim's musings with Tripp on the study sessions follow below: Why he believes Deming (management) is about learning The popularity of the question "Why doesn't everyone get “Deming management”?" Why being conscious of context is essential Why, when dealing with a difficulty in perception, using logic is no help is helping others see things differently Issues associated with extrinsic motivation – punishment and rewards Some challenges of letting go of “patting others” on the head The widespread similarity of organizations What would happen if “rating and ranking” systems were used at home? Lessons from transforming his manager Feedback from his VP's administrative assistant on rewards systems His realization that the system we have is perfectly designed to obtain the results we're getting Why asking for different results requires a different system Some implications of empowerment
Welkom!
