The Food and Drug Administration approved the sale of over-the-counter birth control pills two years ago. The decision has dramatically increased access to contraception, according to a new study from Oregon Health & Science University.    Researchers found that more than a quarter of participants who were using the over-the-counter pill had switched from using no birth control at all. They also found that members of the over-the-counter group were more likely to be uninsured and live in rural areas than participants who used prescription birth control.   Maria Rodriguez is the director of both the Center for Reproductive Health Equity and the Center for Women’s Health at OHSU. She joins us with more on the importance of removing barriers to reproductive health care.

Menopause can present a wide range of symptoms, from hot flashes and sleep disturbances to brain fog and loss of bone density. Though several safe and effective therapies are available, many patients still aren’t receiving the help they need. A new study from Oregon Health & Science University found that more than 60% of respondents with moderate to severe menopause symptoms weren’t receiving any treatment. The primary reason they reported not engaging in treatment was that their clinician hadn’t recommended it to them. Maria Rodriguez is a professor of obstetrics and gynecology at OHSU and the director of the university’s Center for Reproductive Health Equity. Sara Cichowski is the university’s vice chair of gynecology and an assistant professor of obstetrics and gynecology. They both join us to talk more about the barriers to accessing menopause care in Oregon.

Small, Latino-owned farms and their workers are reeling after Washington state's new agricultural overtime law hurt workers' earning potential during busy seasons, and made it hard for small farms with labor-intensive crops to stay in business. Maria works at Planned Parenthood Arizona as their Community & Family Engagement Manager, but at heart she has always been a pleasure focused sex educator. Her Central-American-born-U.S.-raised Latina, Catholic school background definitely played a role in creating the empowered woman who has spoken at local, state, and national conferences in service of normalizing sexuality as an integral part of the human experience.
