In our last episode, Curious City question-asker Emily Porter sent us on a quest exploring the world of local fashion designers, all after she found a thrift shop sweater with a tag that reads: “Maria Rodriguez Chicago.” Who is Maria Rodriguez? How did she get into the industry? And what is it like to be a fashion designer in Chicago? To answer those questions, we take a trip to the basement of the Chicago History Museum, where collection manager Jessica Pushor has archived several Maria Rodriguez ensembles and a case file of news clippings, photos and look books. We also stopped by El Nuevo Mexicano, a Mexican restaurant in Lakeview that Rodriguez now owns and operates, to get the story from the fashion designer herself.

Menopause can present a wide range of symptoms, from hot flashes and sleep disturbances to brain fog and loss of bone density. Though several safe and effective therapies are available, many patients still aren’t receiving the help they need. A new study from Oregon Health & Science University found that more than 60% of respondents with moderate to severe menopause symptoms weren’t receiving any treatment. The primary reason they reported not engaging in treatment was that their clinician hadn’t recommended it to them. Maria Rodriguez is a professor of obstetrics and gynecology at OHSU and the director of the university’s Center for Reproductive Health Equity. Sara Cichowski is the university’s vice chair of gynecology and an assistant professor of obstetrics and gynecology. They both join us to talk more about the barriers to accessing menopause care in Oregon.

Pepe started his music career playing the electric bass in his late teens, when he formed one of the first integrated bands (between African-Americans and Hispanics) in the Washington, DC area. The band, ZAPATA, opened for many great bands such as Miles Davis, Herbie Hancock, Ramsey Lewis, Weather Report, Rashan Roland Kirk, Sly and the Family Stone, and the Isley Brothers. In celebration of Women's History Month we honor Maria Rodriguez. She was a arranger, accompanist and composer, working with groups that included La Jazz and Maria Rodriguez Y Sus Magnificos.
