This week, we ask how we became so polarized, and look at the underlying reasons for division in our culture in a discussion about the meaning behind the "Middle Theory."   Can't we all just get along? What are the roots of the conflicts we see in the world around us... from the geopolitical stage, to our neighborhoods and communities? Although polls over the years offer mixed results, a recurring theme is that voters often tend to be more moderate than the politicians they vote for. Why, then, does there appear to be so much polarization in society, both in politics, and in other areas of life? One result has been that many profess to be politically independent, entirely apolitical, or political "centrists" in an attempt to avoid the polarized viewpoints that so often predominate discussions in the media. And yet, an analysis of the range of ways people define "centrism" even gets confused... how can we have a discussion over the merits, or lack thereof, of a political philosophy when no one seems to agree on a definition for it? This has been one of the long-running themes of the Middle Theory podcast, and one that we explore in depth on this special edition of the podcast. This... is Middle Theory.  UKRAINE FUND: Support Ukraine Relief DOLLARS FOR DONUTS A special thank you to those who donated to the podcast this week: Jon Haskins Victoria Pinderski Jonathan Taylor John Lipartito James Malone If you like Middle Theory and want to help support the show, you can donate to the program here:   We also offer SUBSCRIPTION accounts for those who would like to make recurring monthly payments to Middle Theory. This week, growing concerns over Russia's nuclear rhetoric in recent days have experts looking at how far Vladimir Putin might go in his quest to conquer Ukraine.  This week, as recent polls (finally) show Biden's approval ratings are on the rise, we take a look at what it could mean heading into the mid-terms in November. Meanwhile, Elon Musk has provided reporters with a few vague ideas of what he plans to do with Twitter... putting him into a unique position in terms of political perception and leanings. Then, shifting our attention to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, world leaders have expressed concerns about simulations broadcast on Russian state media depicting potential nuclear strike targets throughout Europe. How far might Vladimir Putin be willing to go as his back is increasingly pressed against the wall, and could this even escalate to the point of weighing the dreaded nuclear option? With Elon Musk's acquisition of Twitter, controversy ensues over issues of transparency and freedom of speech, and whether the platform can improve under Musk's leadership. This week, the White House announced that Vice President Kamala Harris has tested positive for COVID-19, which may be the least of her problems based on a new book that reportedly reveals tensions between she and other members of the Biden Administration, including the President. We also look at the current situation involving statements this week by Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Mark Milley and Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin, which shed new light on the U.S. military's role in the war in Ukraine. Elsewhere, controversy has erupted around Elon Musk's sudden acquisition of Twitter... and many are concerned about what this means for the future of the company, and issues related to free speech and transparency. As Ukrainian officials say the "Battle of Donbas" has begun, we look at how one controversial Russian cleric has urged for "holy war" as the conflict in Ukraine wears on.  This week, news that record numbers of retirees are fleeing to countries like Portugal is making headlines amidst reports about economic woes around the world, and news about the latest strain of the coronavirus sweeping the United States. That, in addition to the unsurprising news that Alex Jones' INFOWARS company has filed for bankruptcy. Meanwhile, Ukrainian officials have now said that their fears about battle in the Donbas region have come to fruition. However, the views of one controversial Russian cleric take center focus in this week's analysis, and the notion that some in Russia view the invasion that has led to the deaths of thousands of Ukrainians and Russians alike is tantamount to a "holy war." Meanwhile, as the situation in Ukraine remains at a standstill for now, what do things look like within Russia, where Vladimir Putin appears to still be suffering from delusions of grandeur and victory? Then we turn our attention to the controversy surrounding Elon Musk's recent purchase of shares in Twitter, followed by a surprise rejection of an offer to sit on the company's board amidst Tweets that the company is "dying" over the weekend. This week, violence erupts at the Oscars during an unscripted episode between Best Actor Award recipient Will Smith and host Chris Rock. The ongoing conflict in Ukraine may have now reached a standstill, as Russian and Ukrainian officials meet to discuss moving toward an end to the conflict that has now raged for almost a month. However, the world's attention put toward the crisis unfolding in the East was temporarily diverted on Sunday, when during the 94th Academy Awards, actor Will Smith, who would later the same night go on to win the award for Best Actor for his role in King Richard, stormed the stage and slapped host Chris Rock following an unmemorable joke about Smith's wife, Jada Pinkett Smith. The incident has received an unprecedented amount of attention since Sunday, and we attempt to analyze the media response, as the Academy weighs options that might include disciplinary action against Smith for what many viewed as an assault on live television.  UKRAINE FUND: Support Ukraine Relief DOLLARS FOR DONUTS A special thank you to those who donated to the podcast this week: Sean O'Neal   Connie Fletcher  Mark Hankins II  Stacia Schwartz Ali Bucan  Kevin Webb  Brain Davis  Sascha Neubauer  If you like Middle Theory and want to help support the show, you can donate to the program here:   We also offer SUBSCRIPTION accounts for those who would like to make recurring monthly payments to Middle Theory. As the crisis in Ukraine continues, world leaders ask how long the present stalemate might continue, and whether an attempt at removing Putin from power could soon occur from within Russia. The Ukrainian conflict has now been underway for almost a month, as many western leaders and commentators look at the apparent stalemate that has erupted between the embattled country and Russian invaders. However, as the crisis continues to unfold, many are asking questions about Russia's claims that it recently used hypersonic weapons against targets in Ukraine. Meanwhile, many are also wondering about the broader messaging coming out of Russia, with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy saying recently that perhaps the most frightening thing of all could be the idea that Vladimir Putin is buying his own hype. However, while the Russian leader continues to propagandize claims of Russian unity, what is the likelihood that a takeover attempt from within Russia could occur, in an effort to oust Putin as the Russian military continues to lose soldiers by the thousands, while innocent Ukrainians are captured, deported, and killed in the conflict? As Russia's invasion of Ukraine ensues, we examine the complicated dynamics between nations, and the new face of warfare in the technological age of the 21st century. Last week, Vladimir Putin ordered his military forces to enter Ukraine in what the Russian leader had likely believed would be a swift capture of Ukraine. Now, as a full week into the conflict steadily approaches, the world has watched as Ukraine defends itself against a surprisingly slow movement of Russian forces, with an irritated Putin ordering nuclear forces to be at ready. The battle that ensues is unlike anything the world has ever seen, and many commentators are observing that 21st century conflict in our modern, “wired” world will help to ensure that it is never quite the same ever again… even in the midst of what has been characterized as a conflict more akin to the conquests of centuries past. This week, in addition to geopolitical perspectives and analysis of the response of other world leaders to the conflict, we also examine the deeper cultural and historical roots behind the current Russian invasion of Ukraine on this special edition of Middle Theory. Tensions remain high on the Ukrainian border, as reports of Russian withdrawals are met with skepticism by NATO and the US amid claims of disinformation from both the East and West.  This week, as many states are beginning to lift their mask requirements indoors for the fully vaccinated, we feature a report on Pfizer's earnings in recent months, as well as the problem with reporting about COVID-19 on sites like YouTube. We also touch on an entirely different take on the Joe Rogan controversy, illustrating how sound-byte culture can misrepresent information before taking a look at stories that include the Remington firearms company settling with Sandy Hook victims' families, a CIA surveillance program that has Congress worried, and what one columnist had to say about similar spying efforts within Presidential campaigns. Lastly, we shift our attention to the crisis on the Ukrainian border, as reports claim Russia may be withdrawing some of its forces. NATO and the U.S. are wary of the claims, amid new reports of rising tensions. Is there still time for diplomacy, or is an invasion imminent? This week, the cancel culture wars continue to be waged over controversial podcaster Joe Rogan's position with Spotify,  and the National Archives goes in search of missing Trump-era documents at Mar-a-Lago.  To say that we live in strange times is an understatement... and this week, as CNN anchor Brian Stelter goes "rogue" in attempting to explain some of his employer's recent controversies, he leaves many viewers asking, "who is he trying to convince?" Meanwhile, we also look at odd contradictions and controversies surrounding mask mandates, why President Joe Biden has been called out by some in the UK for wearing a mask in public, and why several doctors have changed their views on the science of battling the coronavirus pandemic. Then, we shift our attention to the recent raid of Mar-a-Lago by the National Archives, who went in search of missing "love letters" and other documents kept as mementos by former President Trump. As the National Archives goes in search of historical information that is intended to be left to future generations, many celebrities are now trying to hide their past statements from "Internet Archaeologists" who are diligently digging up artifacts from the past that have recently led to further problems for podcaster Joe Rogan. As we kick off 2022, we reflect on the dystopian themes of the 1973 film "Soylent Green" as we look at why recent polls show one thing that people across the political spectrum agree on: that Democracy appears to be in peril.  Happy New Year... as we kick off another revolution around the Sun, this week we stop to take a look at the world of 2022, and how it was envisioned in a dystopian portrayal in 1973 where synthetic foods, climate change, overpopulation, and a host of other issues had become a reality. We ask how close we are to mirroring what the film portrayed, as we reflect on a recent poll that found a majority of Americans are concerned about Democracy. This week, we analyze media reactions to the verdict in the murder trial of Kyle Rittenhouse, and how political lines have been drawn regarding the jury's decision.  One might say we are living in divided times... and signs of that came in recent days when a pair of Fox News contributors quit their positions, based on the network's decision to air a controversial docuseries. We look at this, as well as the anticipated passing of President Biden's Build Back Better bill... and why some commentators on both the right and left are criticizing it. Then we shift our attention over to the Kyle Rittenhouse trial, which has finally ended after the jury's deliberations led them to conclude he was not guilty on the various charges against him. The results of the trial have left political lines drawn in the sand, and the mainstream media was quick to descend into the spin zone... but what do the facts about the case really say? This week, we look at struggles among Democrats to find compromise in advance of a widely anticipated vote on infrastructure and safety net bills.  As we begin our analysis of news this week, alarm bells were ringing following the diagnosis of White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki with COVID 19, who dropped off of a planned international trip with President Biden due to what was described as a family emergency. Also, actor Alec Baldwin finally spoke with the press about the recent tragic incident on the set of the film Rust involving a prop weapon, and all eyes are on the Supreme Court as it prepares to hear cases involving two of the most contentious issues in America today: abortion and gun rights. Then later in the program, we examine the upheaval among Democrats in recent days, as they work their way toward finding approval for President Biden's proposed infrastructure and safety net bills this week. While progressives have called for support of the bill, many Senators warn that they may break ranks with their fellow members of Congress if key climate language ends up being omitted... but what does all of this say about the state of the Democratic Party as the midterm elections arrive, and more importantly, how does it reflect what recent polls are showing about President Biden's current numbers? This week, as the deadline for withdrawal from Afghanistan arrives, we survey the current situation as Biden's exit strategy unfolds overseas, as well as the recent power situation resulting from Hurricane Ida.  As we begin another week of analysis of world events, residents of Louisiana were recently told that they may be without power for as much as three weeks in the aftermath of Hurricane Ida, which made landfall over the weekend. We look at what many residents are going through in the aftermath of the storm, before turning our attention in the direction of Afghanistan. With the Biden Administration's deadline for U.S. withdrawal now having arrived, where will the United States go from here, and what awaits in the days ahead? This week, as the deadline for U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan looms nearer, we look at the challenges the Biden Administration faces as the Taliban warns of potential "consequences."  As floods have ravaged parts of the Southeast in recent days, hurricane season heats up as northeastern states were recently slammed, breaking annual records for rainfall in New York. Meanwhile, the FDA has now fully authorized Pfizer's COVID vaccine, but will this encourage more people to receive the vaccine who have held out for fear of side effects? Then turning our attention toward the crisis in Afghanistan, as the Biden Administration has now said the U.S. will be out of the country by August 31, the Taliban has warned of potential "consequences" if evacuation efforts were to be drawn out beyond the stated deadline. In addition to the Taliban's increasing resistance to cooperating during the withdrawal, reports of ISIL and Al Qaeda returning to Afghanistan have national security and terrorism experts concerned. This week, as chaos erupts in Afghanistan following the withdrawal of U.S. forces and the sudden encroachment of the Taliban, we analyze the Biden Administration's actions and responses to the situation.  This week, after looking at the recent earthquake which rocked Haiti and claimed the lives of at least hundreds of residents, we shift our attention toward the worsening situation in Afghanistan, following the scheduled withdrawal of U.S. forces from the region.  Having been compared in recent days to Saigon at the end of the Vietnam War, the Biden Administration has come under fire for underestimating the speed at which Taliban forces would reclaim the region. While Biden has doubled down on his decision to remove the United States military from Afghanistan, many view the situation as one of the worst foreign policy missteps in recent memory. This week, we look at the numbers as COVID-19 infections rise among America's unvaccinated. As the "Summer Outbreak" ensues, what does the data really say? This week on Middle Theory... AI is on our minds, as one recent story about a man's use of an AI chatbot to continue dialogue with a deceased loved one sounds more like an episode of Black Mirror than it does reality. However, as we turn our attention to other matters, continuing concerns arise from the East as Vladimir Putin warns that he has "unstoppable" weaponry, and China continues to air grievances against the United States. Meanwhile, the threat from COVID-19 remains here at home as unvaccinated Americans head to beaches and other vacation sites in states like Florida which, incidentally, has seen the sharpest rise in new infections (and deaths) of any state in recent weeks. As the United States makes its exit from the "Forever War" in Afghanistan, we look at the problems the country may face, and why history shows that choosing to leave is both the "least worst" and the only right choice.  Protest erupted over the weekend in Cuba on a scale that hasn't been seen in the country in nearly three decades, as people lined the streets in many of the country's major cities airing grievances about the economy and the pandemic. Meanwhile, the strange circumstances surrounding the assassination of the Haitian president continue to unfold as the story grows more complex by the day. Then, shifting our attention over to the U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan, we examine the current situation, the Afghani government's responses, and the encroachment of the Taliban throughout the country. Although there are many who see President Biden's choice to withdraw at the current time problematic, history shows why past attempts at "Nation Building" in the country have been unsuccessful, and that there is no "right time" to exit. We also examine the tragic collapse of a building in Florida that has left several residents missing and presumed dead, along with why the Supreme Court won't hear a dispute over bathrooms for transgender students. Then shifting our attention to military affairs, it was announced in recent days that President Biden had ordered U.S. warplanes to strike Iran-backed militia in Iraq and Syria. We examine the story, and a statement on the actions issued by the Department of Defense and White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki. In light of these events, whether or not one chooses to see them as warranted, they point to the fact that much remains the same in Washington, regardless of who may be in office. In light of this, we turn our focus to the slipperiness of political attitudes, and how many traditionally left-leaning commentators often find themselves to be uneasy bedfellows with their counterparts on the right, particularly in the face of what many call the "Regressive Left." This week we examine the recent G7 Summit and responses to the meeting between world leaders over their goals toward unifying against threats from Russia and China.  This week, as we pick up recent coverage of Vice President Kammala's southern trip, and how it became mired in controversy following problematic statements the VP made when confronted by the media about the Biden Administration's immigration policies. Meanwhile, a shake up has occurred in Israel as a narrow vote has ousted Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who has remained in power for more than a decade. Then getting to the heart of the discussion, we turn our attention toward the 2021 G7 Summit in Cornwall, England, and the response from the international community to the meeting of world leaders. Among the focus of their discussions had been a new global corporate tax, the ongoing battle against COVID-19, and other issues. However, much of the focus of this year's summit also had to do with those countries who were not in attendance--namely China and Russia--and what the response from the G7 member countries should be in the years ahead as the rise of Autocracies in the East remain ever present. This week, with ransomware incidents on the rise, we examine how the world economy can be affected by cybercrime, and what various countries are doing to prevent such attacks.  This week on Middle Theory, after looking at what had caused setbacks for U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris as she embarked on her first international trip since taking office, we turn our attention toward a question so serious that it undoubtedly has caused sleeplessness throughout the world: did former President Donald Trump wear his pants backward to a recent event? We also examine controversies surrounding President Biden's current infrastructure plan, and why one Democrat's crusade for bipartisanship might have actually made things easier for the opposing party. Finally, we then shift our focus over to the problem of ransomware, and why in recent days it has become such a threat to the global economy that the U.S. is now elevating it to being a form of terrorism. We look at all of this, and much more on this week's edition of Middle Theory. Conflicting theories about the origins of COVID-19 continue to make news, with U.S. politicians pushing for investigations into whether it originated from a lab in Wuhan, China.  This week on Middle Theory, we lead off with our observance of Memorial Day and related news, which includes an analysis of a dispute that erupted between Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin and Texas Senator Ted Cruz. We also look at shootings that occurred over the holiday weekend, and how a seven-year-old boy managed to save his family by swimming for an hour. Then getting to the heart of the discussion, while U.S. politicians continue to press for investigations into the possible origin of COVID-19 at a virology lab in Wuhan, China, some scientists have raised objections to variations of the lab theory. We look at these theories and weigh the possibilities in terms of what scientists have had to say about the matter in recent days.
