I give you some brief thoughts on the Gamestop situation, and how in a weird way, I am glad so many thousands of people are seeing the hypocrisy of the system which pretends to give people equal opportunity to invest in things to only handcuff them when it isn't going the best for hedge funds who were left exposed by the recent Reddit posts and subsequent trades on RobinHood and other places Regarding Gamestop, AMC, and other stocks! I discuss how BofA has been mysteriously screwing over clients with Merrill in this way for a while and I discuss how people won't forget the days they got screwed by sharing a couple stories from my investing past. Plus I talk about Austin Weinstein's story in the Charlotte Observer about Wells Fargo employees feeling anxious about the ax coming down on them for potential job cuts that are likely to happen at Wells. (paywall) I discuss how employees in branch banking always feel that anxiousness, and I discuss small town NM Wells Fargos and how one city in NM (Eunice) was mentioned where I don't think Wells leaving is a big deal, but one town (Magdalena) where Wells leaving was horrible. I discuss how it felt to wonder about possibly losing my job when I was at BofA when Moynihan put the "New BAC" in place a decade ago. Plus I discuss how Bank of America is giving $150 Million to private funds for the purposes of their $1B commitment for Racial Equality, and how myself and a couple of African-America people in the banking industry doesn't feel like it solves anything. I discuss how BofA is known for giving in a sense to pass the buck when it comes to declining people of any color who have borrowing needs by allowing the receipients of those funds to do the dirty work. I explain how BofA touts Minority Entrepreneurs in the press release, yet will not lend to any entrepreneurs for start-up companies in the branch unless they are in business for 2 years already with $250k Revenue. I discuss how this ends racial inequality and not drives it possibly deeper in the ground. All My Links HERE MY PATREON Page! In this episode, we speak with Jarrid Tingle, Managing Partner of Harlem Capital Partners. For entrepreneurs raising money, the world of venture capital can feel insular and opaque. It’s as much or more about who you are and who you know than what you’re building. For founders from under-represented groups, the numbers tell the story. Simply stated, the startup industry has a diversity problem. Of the thousands of VC partners practicing today, only 18% are female, and of the VC-backed founders out there, only 9% are female. And when you look at the statistics by race, the picture gets even more grim. Only 1 percent of venture-backed founders are black and 2% are Latino. Raised by a single mom & grandparents who placed a premium on education, Jarrid’s a graduate of 3 prestigious institutions - the Peddie School ( elite private high school/ boarding school), The Wharton School (undergrad) & Harvard University Business School ( #MBA) where he was named a BakerScholar. He’s also a Forbes 30 under 30 & an Inc. Magazine 30 under 30 designee. He spent the early years of his career in the world of private equity, where this “gap” became glaringly obvious to him and his co-founder and former HBS classmate Henri Pierre-Jacques.

Now he’s using his network, his knowledge & his experience to give back. HCP is taking a different approach, aiming to fund a much wider group of founders, including African Americans, Latinos & women. HCP’s stated goal: to invest in 1,000 “diverse” founders over the next 20 years.   “We fundamentally believe we are a venture fund with impact, not an impact fund,” according to Henri Pierre-Jacques. “The way we generate impact is to give women and minority entrepreneurs ownership.” Harlem Capital, first founded in 2015, upgraded from it’s original approach as the facilitator of angel syndicate to a full-fledged, industry-agnostic seed and Series A stage venture capital fund. They closed their debut effort on an oversubscribed $40.3 million. With its first fund close, Harlem Capital becomes one of the largest venture capital funds with a diversity mandate. Its already made numerous investments out of this fund. It’s a very inspirational story worth hearing.

A new study published in Small Business Economics: An Entrepreneurship Journal by faculty at Florida Atlantic University College of Business and the University of Bergamo in Italy suggests equity crowdfunding has boosted opportunities for younger entrepreneurs, while helping to bridge the distance between startup companies and their investors. However, female and minority entrepreneurs, typically considered financially constrained in traditional entrepreneurial markets, do not have higher chances to raise funds in equity crowdfunding. Douglas Cumming, professor of finance at FAU Business, was a co-author of the study.Support the show (https://business.fau.edu/giving/)
