Despite filling more than half of places in Australian medical schools, women represent 45 per cent of all medical practitioners and just 36 per cent of specialists. Female representation dwindles further in many areas of clinical leadership, prompting what has been termed a “leaky pipeline”. It has been reported that women would progress at similar rates to men, and achieve similar remuneration, were it not for the time taken out from the profession to raise children. In this podcast we discuss what it would take to mitigate this so-called “motherhood penalty” through policy, workplace culture and better distribution of labour in the home. This discussion is important because it relates not just to the wellbeing and rights of individual medics, but also to the depth and diversity of the workforce.acity struggles to keep up with demand.  Chapters1:38 Better support of returning mothers in return to work 9:09 How leave and part-time work affects the medical workforce and the benefits of flexibility19:56 The “motherhood penalty” on career progression of women to senior positions 33:52 Broader biases in society not just around gender roles but a health work-life balance CreditsGuestsAssociate Professor Kara Allen FANZCA (Royal Melbourne Hospital; University of Melbourne) Dr Jenny Proimos FRACP (Royal Children's Hospital Melbourne; Monash Centre for Health Research and Innovation; ProductionProduced by Mic Cavazzini DPhil. There is evidence that six months or more off the job leads to some loss of practical skills and knowledge and certainly, many doctors a loss of self-confidence. People take time out from medical practice for many different reasons but career breaks to raise children are more common than ever before. Paediatrics is one specialty where female representation exceeds 70 percent and it is also becoming more common for new fathers to take leave as primary carers. Senior staff at Sydney Children's Hospital have developed a day-long workshop to help medics brush off the cobwebs before they return to practice. It involves rehearsal of specific skills, refreshers on calculation and interpretation tasks and a high-fidelity critical care simulation. Just as importantly, there is open discussion and mentorship to support the transition back to work. The program is called Paediatric Returnees after Maternity or Extended Leave (PRAM) this podcast was recorded during a live workshop at the Kids Simulation Centre, Randwick.  GuestsWorkshop participants: Elodie, Eliza, Emma, April, Stephanie, Lucy and Paula. In this dialogue, Prof Christo Doherty, the Chair of Research in the Wits School of Arts, speaks to Stephen Hobbs, a South African artist whose work spans a wide range of media, exploring themes of urban transformation, architecture, and social dynamics. Known for his thought-provoking installations and public art projects, Stephen has a distinctive approach that often examines the hidden infrastructures of cities, and the intersection of natural and built environments. Stephen has an exhibition, a survey of his career of almost thirty years, entitled “Man Shouting in Distance” which is running at the Wits Art Museum until 23 November. Stephen earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg in 1993. From 1994 to 2000, he served as the curator of the Market Theatre Galleries, fostering a dynamic space for contemporary art in the city. In 2001, he co-founded The Trinity Session with fellow Wits fine arts graduates Kathryn Smith and Marcus Neustetter. Trinity was an artist collaborative and public art consultancy dedicated to integrating art into urban environments. Stephen's own artistic practice often explored themes of city infrastructure and social dynamics, laying the groundwork for his later explorations into the intersections of art, architecture, and public space. Recently, Stephen has ventured into bio-art, working with mycelium—the root structure of fungi—to investigate natural systems that mirror urban networks. His innovative approach challenges us to reconsider the hidden connections that shape both our cities and our planet.” In this podcast we discuss Stephen's beginning as an artist, his family background, education and early influences, and how growing up in Johannesburg shaped his perspective as an artist. We go on to examine his strategies as an artist exploring the urban landscape, and negotiating the complexities of post-apartheid transformations in the Johannesburg geography. We also discuss Stephen's interest in strategies of deception and camouflage and how these have manifested in his practice. We then explore the range of mediums that Stephen has used to express his ideas and how his practice has evolved over his career. Finally we follow Stephen into a new terrain of practice - BioArt - in which he has been working with mycelia to explore the hidden connections between the structure of cities and the planetary environment. Gorham has a J.D., summa cum laude, from Syracuse University College of Law, where he served on the editorial staff of the Syracuse Law Review. His writing has appeared in The Washington Post and in online journals. Interviewer Kelsi Hasden is an adjunct professor of composition at the University of North Florida and Florida State College at Jacksonville. She holds a Bachelor's degree in English focusing on Postcolonial theory and Women's studies and a Master's degree in Rhetoric and Composition. She writes about a range of issues and events, dines out as often as she can, and attends events around Jacksonville. Kelsi writes and edits articles for The Jaxson and Modern Cities. READ Check out The Confidante in print, digital, and audio in our catalog! CHRISTOPHER RECOMMENDS Here are the three books I found especially enlightening as I wrote The Confidante. Kristin Downey's The Woman Behind the New Deal: The Life and Legacy of Frances Perkins is the story of the progressive whose wish list essentially became the New Deal (minimum wages, Social Security, etc.). Perkins was the first woman cabinet member in American history, serving as Secretary of Labor for the entirety of Roosevelt's presidency (1933-1945). Personally, Perkins was not particularly warm and could be seen as rather mirthless. But her legacy as a New Deal heroine is deserved and her prominence in FDR's cabinet underscores how much Roosevelt respected competence regardless of sex or ethnicity. FDR and Perkins went back to his days as Governor of New York, and even before that, women played a large role in his professional life. In The Gatekeeper: Missy LeHand, FDR, and the Untold Story of the Partnership That Defined a Presidency, by Kathryn Smith, we learn that after Roosevelt contracted polio in 1921, Roosevelt brought on Marguerite “Missy” LeHand, a working-class woman from Somerville, Massachusetts as his secretary. In time, she became much more. When FDR became President in 1933, Missy came to Washington. She was not only the gatekeeper of his social and professional calendar but was essentially his Chief-of-Staff until a series of strokes incapacitated her in 1940-41. It was at this time, as I discuss in my book, that Anna Rosenberg became part of FDR's innermost circle. The dual struggles for equality in defense work and desegregation of the armed forces were undertaken within the Roosevelt White House by Mary McLeod Bethune, Robert Weaver, Bill Hastie, Al Smith, and Robert Vann. Bethune was the leader of the “Black Cabinet,” but the men alongside her performed admirable work in the service of advancing the Black cause. In her excellent book, The Black Cabinet: The Untold Story of African Americans and Politics During the Age of Roosevelt, Jill Watts describes the successes of the Black Cabinet—and the challenges: all five risked losing their jobs, being cashiered to faraway agencies, or being labeled Communist by reactionary congressmen. --- Sign Up for Library U to hear about the latest Lit Chats and catch them live! — https://jaxpubliclibrary.org/library-u-enrollment Jacksonville Public LibraryWebsite: https://jaxpubliclibrary.org/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/jaxlibrary Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/JaxLibrary/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/jaxlibrary/ YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/user/jaxpubliclibraryfl Contact Us: jplpromotions@coj.net

"We need a new website" is a constant refrain among small business owners. But why? What is it that's really wrong with their current website? Is it not representing the current business? Does it look out of date? Is it unable to conduct transactions? Or is it just not generating enough leads? At the end of the day, it doesn't matter why a business owner wants a new website. What matters is that they have realized their website is no longer working for them and they are ready to make a change. In this episode we explore the different reasons businesses want new websites and the common mistakes they make when redesigning their online presence. Our guest, Kathryn Smith, is an eCommerce consultant based outside of Atlanta, GA. She helps small businesses and entrepreneurs launch websites and grows their online businesses. Dr Kathryn Smith is an interdisciplinary visual artist and curator who has moved from an initial education in Fine Arts (with a BAFA and MAFA from Wits) to actively explore applied sciences at the University of Dundee where she earned an MSc in Forensic Art, and a PhD from the Liverpool John Moores University. It is a journey that has taken her from advanced contemporary art practice, she was winner of the Standard Bank Young Artist Award in 2004, to a deep engagement with the practicalities and theoretical and ethical challenges of forensic facial imaging. In this dialogue, we discuss the trajectory of Kathryn's career from "crime artist and muse" - starting with her MA on Joel-Peter Witkin - to applied forensic facial reconstruction projects such as the recent Sutherland Reburial Initiative. We also discuss the postgraduate work Kathryn did at the Dundee Centre for Anatomy and Human Identification and the challenges raised by the "Laws of the Face" which she explored in her PhD; as well as her contributions to the Face Lab research group, including the development of the MA Art in Science degree at Liverpool John Moores University. We talk about her return to South Africa and how she is establishing resources to promote forensic imaging skills through VIZ.Lab, as well as new understandings of this scarce skill in the African context, most recently for the Charting the Uncharted exhibition. Finally we explore Kathryn's thinking about the relationship between art and science practice; the management of "pracademic" exchanges between operational, institutional, and research environments; and the notion of knowledge generation in arts-science-technology research. Hey everyone. This is Rudy Fernandez from Creative Outhouse. At Creative Outhouse we create brilliant content and integrated marketing campaigns. Just go to Creative Outhouse.com and click on Creative Work if you don’t believe me. This episode with Kathryn Smith of MedShape is really enlightening. MedShape supplies foot and ankle surgeons with advanced devices for surgeries. Most ortho procedures were stopped for a few months. So who would have a better overall picture of how that’s starting to pick up than the people who supply the materials for surgery? And their customers are primarily Doctors. So I wanted to hear what’s changed in terms of how to market to an audience that’s always part of the marketing mix in healthcare. I learned a lot talking to Katherine and you will too. So enjoy. Welcome to Marketing Upheaval. My guest today is Kathryn Smith, Director of Marketing for MedShape. Kathryn holds a doctorate in Bioengineering from Georgia Tech. So I have a lot of questions about that career path. She’s been with MedShape for more than nine years. MedShape makes advanced medical devices using foot and ankle surgeries. The COVID-19 crisis brought about 80% of medical procedures to a halt, and foot and ankle surgeries are among those procedures. We’re going to talk about marketing in this environment and what it looks like moving forward. Transcript:From Bio-engineering to MarketingRudy: So, first question is personal. What stands out to me is you have a PhD in Bioengineering. And now you’re a Director of Marketing. So tell me about that journey.Kathryn: I think that’s the number one question I get all the time. I got my PhD in Bioengineering. I started with MedShape after I graduated, working on the R&D side, actually as a Postdoc, which is a typical position. After you get your PhD you go on to do further research and publish. MedShape is a unique company in that we’re very research focused, for our size. We probably have more PhDs on staff than a typical medical device company. And so I started out doing benchtop research around our products, collecting data to publish. So I started working more with our surgeons or surgeon customers on these studies, spending more time out in the field in surgeries. As we started to launch more products and helping train the surgeons on the products and then get feedback for our pipeline. That eventually transitioned into a marketing role. I started out as a marketing associate, and then have been the marketing director for about 6 years now.I didn’t know anything about marketing when I started. I’ve definitely learned a lot along the way. What I have learned is, marketing medical devices is very similar to being a researcher. If you’re a scientist, you’re collecting data and then you’re trying to figure out how best to tell the story around your data. Be it in a presentation or conference presentation or in a paper and marketing medical devices or marketing in general is the same thing. You’re crafting the story around your products. And given my technical background, I think that’s definitely proven to be beneficial for me and the technical nature of our products to be able to understand the data around it and then be able to figure out how to effectively communicate it to our customers.View the full transcript and images at: https://creativeouthouse.com/orthopedic-surgeonsSupport the show (http://www.creativeouthouse.com/our-work)

The Hudson Valley is known throughout the United State as the home of Franklin Delano Roosevelt (FDR). In this program the author and Rotarian (Greater Anderson Club, SC) Kathryn Smith tells about FDR’s longtime personal secretary, Missy LeHand, the subject of Ms. Smith’s new book The Gatekeeper: Missy LeHand, FDR, and the Untold Story of the Partnership that Defined a Presidency . 24-year-old Ms. LeHand joined FDR’s failed candidacy for Vice-President as a secretary in 1920 and stayed with him through his career in business and law, his battle with polio, his New York State governorship (1928-32), and the first years of his presidency, only leaving him by dying in July 1944, nine months before Roosevelt also passed away. In addition to her role that amounted to being “chief of staff” when FDR was president, Ms. LeHand was his co-leader in making the polio rehabilitation center at Warm Springs, GA, a success. With mysterious diagrams, Hebrew letters, and often Hebrew terminology, it can seem impenetrable to the new student. Most of us are not going to go into the decades of study the Kabballah requires, but would like to know a bit more, so I'll be asking some basic questions of Kathryn about the major texts and schools, both Jewish and Christian, as well as history, concepts, and terminology. This is not the same as the coming workshop, but me asking questions on what modern magick users should know about the Kabbalah. As we commemorate National Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day and the 75th anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor we return to history and World War II with two important stories when journalist Kathryn Smith, author of THE GATEKEEPER: MISSY LEHAND, FDR AND THE UNTOLD STORY OF THE PARTNERSHIP THAT DEFINED A PRESIDENCY and historian Marc Wortman, author of 1941, FIGHTING THE SHADOW WAR join Halli on The Halli Casser-Jayne Show, Wednesday, 3 pm ET at Halli Casser-Jayne dot com.In THE GATEKEEPER, Journalist Kathryn Smith tells the story of Marguerite  Alice “Missy” LeHand the savvy personal secretary President Franklin Delano Roosevelt considered one of the most vital, and certainly one of the most loyal members of his inner circle. Missy fulfilled the crucial duties of Chief of Staff long before the position was formally created, working with FDR for more than twenty years. She was also FDR's confidante (LOVER?), his support when he contracted polio, and his close friend. People in Washington, D.C., knew one indisputable truth: if you wanted to get to FDR, you had to go through Missy.A divided America? A country reluctant to go to war? A country turning its back on genocide? The year 2016? No, the year 1941, the focus of historian Marc Wortman's book 1941, FIGHTING THE SHADOW WAR. Conventional wisdom dictates that the US entered World War II in retaliation for the bombing of Pearl Harbor on December 8, 1941. Historian Marc Wortman sees it another way, revealing the ways in which America played an increasingly significant and clandestine role in the war in the months and years prior to officially joining the battle. Churchill, Lindbergh, the Roosevelt family, FDR advisor and emissary Harry Hopkins, journalists William Shirer and Philip Johnson, Wortman weaves the smart, suspenseful history that reads like an epic novel.

Because we are in the midst of a heated presidential campaign, we know that much coverage goes to the people around the candidate.  We want to know who will be the advisors. Who gets to whisper in the ear of the President and who might have the last word before important decisions are made. During the Presidency of FDR, one of the most influential of those closest to the President was Missy LeHand. A little known or understood figure, who functioned as FDR’s de facto Chief of Staff. While Eleanor Roosevelt was often referred to as the President's legs, LeHand was was his right hand.  Giving us the first full scale biography of this important historical figure is Kathryn Smith in The Gatekeeper: Missy LeHand, FDR, and the Untold Story of the Partnership That Defined a Presidency.
