In this week’s episode of Food, Sex & Life for the Modern Woman, Nicole Jardim explains the four phases of our menstrual cycle. This episode is a must listen if you’re interested in getting in touch with your body on a hormonal level. Our hormones are not these crazy, wild emotional roller coasters out to ruin our lives. Our endocrine system and hormones are our guiding system. They react according to the current phase our body is going through and the sooner we learn to follow their guide, the better we will feel and know our bodies. Sign up to receive our newsletter, and you will also get our FREE 15-Day Fat Loss Kick Start Guide Four Phases of the Menstrual Cycle Phase 1- The Bleeding Phase or Menstruation The emphasis is on this phase being the big deal, but this is actually the last part of what happens to our bodies throughout the month. Hormones are at their lowest. Jardim recommends during this phase we plan to keep our calendar clear. Energy level is at it’s lowest. Phase 2- The Follicular Phase During this period our brain tells our ovaries to start producing hormones, and starts pushing egg out of ovaries. We fell more energy, mood is better, our verbal communication is better and everything starts to take a life of its own. Testosterone is activating our libido. It is recommended during this phase that we do strenuous exercise, brainstorm, go on job interviews, give presentations, go to networking events and go on dates! Phase 3- Ovulatory Phase This is “THE BIG DEAL”. Eggs are released from the ovaries, travel down the fallopian tubes and are either fertilized and implanted in the uterus or released in next period. Estrogen is real high. We get feel good vibes, cervical fluid is changing, cervix goes up high to catch best swimming sperm. We feel confident, self image is through the roof, libido is high and we have a heightened sense of vision, smell, taste and verbal. We feel the most bold. Recommendation: ask for a raise! Phase 4- The Luteal Phase This is the last half of our cycle, will last 10-14 days long, and will determine how long our cycle will be. We start producing progesterone which is the natural calming hormone, helps control hunger, cravings, mood  and PMS symptoms. Note: stress reduced progesterone levels. Recommendation is that during this phase we take Epsom salt baths, magnesium for building progesterone, go to bed earlier and try to remain relaxed a much as possible.   One of Nicole’s biggest recommendations is that we exercise according to our menstrual cycle, and avoid strenuous exercise during our cycle and the days leading up to it. Our bodies need less strenuous exercise…not more! Hmmm….where have we heard that before?? Yes, during our interview with Jason Seib, The Four Phases of Weight Loss- Exercise!!   What Should Our Menstrual Cycle Look Like? The four phases of the menstrual cycle should last between 25 to 35 days without much fluctuation from month to month. Two or three days off is OK. If it’s not that regular, there is a hormonal imbalance.   Common Period Problems and Tips to Alleviate Them Nicole goes over the 3 most common period problems she sees with her clients: Spotting Period stops and starts Amenorrhea PCOS She also gives some tips on what may be causing them and how to alleviate them. But she recommends going in steps. From a physical standpoint: Look at food first- what can you bring into your diet that will help. Maybe you start by eating leafy greens twice a day, instead of trying to revamp your entire diet all at once. Bring in healthy fats. Eliminate refined wheat and sugar Test blood sugar levels and stabilize. From an emotional standpoint: Start with the phases of your cycle. What can you do at each phase to nourish your body and build it into your calendar.   “You have to fill your cup first, before you take care of everybody else.”   If you want more help fixing your period, try one of Nicole’s “Fix Your Period” Courses:   FIX YOUR PERIOD COURSE – TRACK I Suffering related to your menstrual cycle is unnecessary… and most definitely NOT normal. (Statistically normal perhaps, but I promise it’s not the way your body was designed.) The Zika virus is dominating the news this week. The latest data says it's been found in 21 countries so far. The symptoms are generally mild, but the possibility of a link to microcephaly has been raised in Brazil. Microcephaly is a serious condition where children are born with abnormally small heads and sometimes incomplete brain development. Trudie Lang, Professor of Global Health at Oxford University, and virologist Professor Jonathan Ball from Nottingham University discuss what we know so far. All the way from Antarctica our reporter Victoria Gill brings us the latest news about the citizen science project 'Penguin Watch'. Victoria installed new cameras with Dr Tom Hart and collected guano with Hila Levy. Gemma Clucas (Oxford and Southampton University) gives an update on what will happen with the collected data. Back in October we featured a major paper by a team of scientists lead by Dr Andrea Manica from Cambridge University. By comparing the 4500 year-old genome of a prehistoric man called Mota to other genomes from living Africans they had mapped a migration of Middle Eastern farmers back into the whole African continent. This week, colleagues identified an error in the way the original team had processed the data, thus overturning one of the key results. But the rest of the findings remain intact. Andrea talks to us about how and why science must make corrections along the path of progress. Heard a few stories about giant dinosaur fossils lately? Usually the giant A-list superstar fossils get all the attention. But according to curator Mark Carnall, about 90% of the collections are mainly uninteresting specimens. Marnie Chesterton went out to meet Mark at the Museum of Natural History in Oxford. He celebrates fragmentary fossils in his blog 'Underwhelming Fossil Fish of the Month'. Warning: Lower your expectations! Producer: Jen Whyntie Assistant Producer: Julia Lorke.

Oprah's OWN, The Wall Street Journal, Martha Stewart Living & L.A Times are some of the places you have seen Pearl's Topiary Garden featured . He has even been a keynote speaker at Harvard University, the inspiration in the documentary "A Man Named Pearl" & a film short funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation called "Planting Hope". Pearl once stated, "According to the book I would have thrown it out, but I didn't know anything about the book," "I didn't even know what topiary was." The most education he received was a three minute overview on a small topiary plant he purchased. Amazingly done freehand with no forms to start his fascinating works of art. He is known internationally in the world of gardens and art. His story is an example of what can happen when you try something new and discover hidden talent beyond imagination. For the past 25 years, he has taken the world of topiaries to heights never imagined before. Starting by taking plants no one, not even the professionals thought were anything more than trash. Transforming them into a work of art through a labor of patience, love and determination. He looked at the potential of the plant and nurtured each one. He has taken risks and developed new techniques to tame trees. He has been featured in the documentary: 'A Man Named Pearl'. Thousands visits his garden yearly. There are 150 topiaries on his three acre property, comprised of 400 different plants. His topiaries can be seen all around Bishopville. He started with the 'Yard of the Month' award to numerous articles in national newspapers and magazines and appearances on national television. Recently Pearl's Topiary Garden has been designated a Preservation Project of the Garden Conservancy. It is a 501C3 Foundation. Pearl Fryar believes strongly in the role higher education can play in breaking the cycle of poverty in rural communities. He tells visitors to the garden that he believes a student’s academic performance does not always reflect potential for success. To realize Pearl’s objective of helping the average student to succeed, the Pearl Fryar Topiary Garden, Inc. contributes to scholarship funds at Central Carolina Technical College in Bishopville, South Carolina and at Clinton Junior College in Rock Hill, South Carolina. Scholarships are awarded to students who might not have done well in high school but who nevertheless show "potential." ~ PearlFryar.com © Building Abundant Success!! 2014 All Rights Reserved See you on my New Facebook Page ~ facebook.com/BuildingAbundantSuccess
