Many industries depend on the government to finance infrastructure and research before a true private market can develop. In the case of space, there is still a strong need for public-private collaboration. But as costs drop to reach space, more private-sector companies can enter the market. Matthew Weinzierl is a senior associate dean and professor at Harvard Business School, and Brendan Rosseau is a strategy manager at Blue Origin. They explain the evolving role of the U.S. government to foster innovation and competition as the space economy increasingly privatizes. They also identify the emerging opportunities for businesses and individuals. Weinzierl and Rosseau are authors of the book Space to Grow: Unlocking the Final Economic Frontier.

--- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/malhete-podcast/message

Taking the Leap with Rachel G. Scott

Beyond the Comfort of Your Corporate Position into your Life's PurposeWhen God gives you a vision, He doesn't give it to a committee, he gives it to a single individual. However, fear of what others may think will often hinder us from making certain decisions, such as leaving a profitable high ranking job for a more community focused mission, moving to a new state, or taking care of a loved one. Join this conversation with James Rosseau as we discuss how and when to roll up your sleeves, go beyond your current position, and serve your purpose to the world.James Rosseau is the Founder and CEO of The Corelink Solution, a non-profit that's committed to empowering people to reach their potential. The organization delivers learning programs through the brand and faith-based media platform Holy Culture. His passion is to empower youth to understand, release, and maximize their potential.James talks about how he chose not to be caught up in the demands of a corporate position to the detriment of his purpose. He explains that roles and positions are seasonal and the importance of not letting job titles or positions, which are temporary, stop us from serving our purpose, which is eternal. Tom welcomes back a past guest of the show, Warren Irwin. Warren discusses the valuable lessons from the BRE-X story. He had just graduated from university when the excitement around BRE-X was happening, and it was the poster child at the time being heavily promoted. After investing in the project, it grew significantly, and he decided to go and see it in person. Once he returned to Canada, he started to question the narrative around BRE-X. Numerous people were fooled, including some of the geologists that had worked on the project. He was building a house, and fortunately sold half of his shares near the top of the market. Warren had concerns and immediately sold the other half when the CEO 'fell' out of a helicopter. He shared his concerns, but many were hostile towards him and others stayed in denial. He did manage to talk most friends who invested into selling out of the stock. The mining industry, today, is much better easier to research than in the past. Bulls want to believe, but greed can easily get out of control. Whenever you feel brilliant and superb about your investments, start selling. The markets can be very treacherous, and you have to exercise caution. His approach is to find good companies with new resource discoveries. That is what has brought him profits and money is rarely made by just speculating on the price of gold. People are starting to wake up to the realities of green energy and embrace nuclear. Some additional uranium production is beginning to come online and NexGen and KazAtomProm have quite low costs of production. Every uranium project is quite viable by $75 a pound. He believes modularity will be key to future acceptance of nuclear power. Plants need to be standardized and simplified to an extent to reduce costs by economics of scale. We all need cheap, clean power that is also safe. He believes ESG is one of the nuttiest things to ever happen to the mining industry. There is a lot of fantasy as to how environmental ideas should be implemented. We need resources to build out the electrification of the world, but everything ;needs' to be green already. We're seeing similar things with the oil business, as we demand the Saudi's keep up production while we cut our own. The world becomes completely crazy when politicians and do-gooders become part of the decision-making process. The future will be fascinating, but don't sell your gas or diesel powered vehicle just yet. Talking Points From This Episode Lessons and observations from the BRE-X scandal. Why you should be concerned if you're feeling good about your investments.Outlook for uranium and why high prices may not be sustainable.ESG is a fantasy run by politicians and do-gooders.

On this episode of the future-award winning Talking Buffalo Podcast, Patrick Moran talks with Anthony Marino from Buffalo Rumblings to recap the Bills selection of Miami defensive end Gregory Rousseau in round one of the NFL draft as well as a discussion on some of the biggest moments from Thursday night's first round. As it turned out just two defensive ends were off the board (Jaelan Phillips and Kwity Paye) when the Bills went on the clock with the 30th pick, leaving them to choose between Rousseau and other prospects like Jayson Oweh, Azeez Ojulari and Joe Tyron.  Brandon Beane ultimately went with Rosseau and the guys give their kneejerk reaction to the pick, as this podcast was taped less than a hour after the selection was made. Both guys conclude the pick was underwhelming but practical and offer a few suggestions on who they wish the Bills would've targeted with the selection. They also take a look at how the AFC East played out in round one Thursday night, including Mac Jones falling to the New England Patriots at pick No. 25 while the Jets and Dolphins each grabbed two first-rounders. Be sure to follow Anthony on Twitter @AnthMarino and check out Buffalo Rumblings for all the latest Bills news and commentary as well as  full  NFL draft coverage. ♦♦♦♦♦ Follow Patrick Moran/Talking Buffalo Podcast  Twitter: @PatMoranTweets. The Leviathan - account of human nature - concept by Hobbes about 'War Of All Against All' brings impacts on the pessimism of live itself. This leads humanity to lay the human nature at authority to create order. Hobbes with his Leviathan theory believed that humans lived in a state of war of all against all, and hence needed an authority to create order. Meanwhile, Rosseau with his Social Contract, believed that a legitimate political authority may put the society in a state far worse than the good one, instead!

Is your rhubarb bolting already?   When your rhubarb seems to be bolting too early, ask yourself these questions...   Is your rhubarb an heirloom or a new variety? Older varieties tend to bolt sooner. Try planting a newer variety.   Is your rhubarb very established? The older your rhubarb, the quicker it bolts. If you divide your established rhubarb, it revitalizes your plant and can thwart flowering.   Has it been super cold, hot, or is your rhubarb otherwise stressed? These threatening conditions can cause rhubarb to bolt. Make sure to mulch around your rhubarb to keep it cool as a cucumber.   Unlike other bolting edibles, bolting rhubarb does not affect the taste of the stems. So you can chillax about that.   Now, for what to do with that rhubarb flower... well, I have a friend who cuts them and puts them in a vase and treats them like a cut flower.         Brevities   #OTD It's the birthday of Alexander Pope, a gardener poet who helped inspire the English landscape garden.   Born to a Catholic family, Pope was an only child. He was exceptionally bright, self-taught in numerous languages and the classics.   When Pope was twelve he contracted Potts disease (a form of tuberculosis); the illness impacted his spine - he was a hunchback- and he was only four and a half feet tall.   He had a passion for gardens and garden design. Little details from Pope's garden plans show his regard for ancient Rome as he had incorporated both a vineyard and a kitchen garden.   Pope's Palladian villa and garden were separated by a road. Pope cleverly used a tunnel to go under the road in order to create private access to the garden from his home. The tunnel became his grotto; a masterpiece of mirrors, candles, shells, minerals and fossils.   He described the thrill of finishing the grotto in a letter to his friend Edward Blount in 1725:   "I have put the last hand to my works... happily finishing the subterraneous Way and Grotto: I then found a spring of the clearest water, which falls in a perpetual Rill, that echoes thru' the Cavern day and night. ...When you shut the Doors of this Grotto, it becomes on the instant, from a luminous Room, a Camera Obscura, on the walls of which all the objects of the River, Hills, Woods, and Boats, are forming a moving Picture... And when you have a mind to light it up, it affords you a very different Scene: it is finished with Shells interspersed with Pieces of Looking-glass in angular Forms... at which when a Lamp ...is hung in the Middle, a thousand pointed Rays glitter and are reflected over the place."   Pope's villa and grotto became a tourist destination. After he died, new owners of his property were so annoyed by the attention that they destroyed both the garden and the villa. Today, plans are underway to restore the grotto to its former glory.         #OTD It's the birthday of Henri Rousseau was born on this day in 1844.   Rousseau didn't start painting until he was 40 years old. He submitted his work to the Salon in 1886 and was ridiculed. Nonetheless, he returned every year for the rest of his life with new pieces. One harsh critic said that Rousseau painted with his feet.   Rousseau became famous for his jungle paintings. Although he had never been to the jungle, he had been to the botanical garden at Paris. The place was his muse. Rousseau said,   "When I step into the hothouses and see the plants from exotic lands, it seems to me that I am in a dream.”       Unearthed Words   Alexander Pope on His Grotto at Twickenham   Thou who shalt stop, where Thames' translucent wave Shines a broad Mirror thro' the shadowy Cave; Where ling'ring drops from min'ral Roofs distill, And pointed Crystals break the sparkling Rill, Unpolish'd Gems no ray on Pride bestow, And latent Metals innocently glow. Approach! Great Nature studiously behold; And eye the Mine without a wish for Gold. Approach; but awful! Lo! th' Egerian Grot, Where, nobly-pensive, St. John sate and thought; Where British sighs from dying Wyndham stole, And the bright flame was shot thro' Marchmont's Soul. Let such, such only tread this sacred Floor, Who dare to love their Country, and be poor.     Today's book recommendation: The Land of the Blue Poppies by Frank Kingdon Ward During the first years of the twentieth century, the British plant collector and explorer Frank Kingdon Ward went on 24 impossibly daring expeditions throughout Tibet, China, and Southeast Asia, in search of rare and elusive species of plants. Ward discovered the legendary Tibetan blue poppy and thanks to Ward, the seeds were introduced into the world’s gardens. Ward’s accounts capture all the romance of his wildly adventurous expeditions, whether he was swinging across a bottomless gorge on a cable of twisted bamboo strands or clambering across a rocky scree in fear of an impending avalanche.      Today's Garden Chore Take a cue from Alexander Pope and connect your house to your garden with a path.    This is especially lovely if you have a kitchen garden or if you grow edibles. By uniting these two areas, you're conveying the significance of the garden - as part of your home. With a series of paths and steps, you can also create offshoots to garden rooms or other distinct spaces. If your garden is feeling disjoint or too much like an island, a passage way could be the perfect way to achieve connection and harmony.       Something Sweet  Reviving the little botanic spark in your heart   #OTD It's the birthday of Richard Walter Pohl born today in 1916.    Pohl was an expert on the grasses of temperate and tropical America. He was an avid gardener, growing fruits, vegetables and ornamentals at his home garden.   One of the most impactful experiences in Pohl's career was the chance to teach an agrostology course in Costa Rica. He lost his heart to the plants and people there. Pohl made over 20 field expeditions to Costa Rica, Central and South America after 1966. He botanized in the region, collecting bamboos and grasses, amassing over 15,800 plants in his lifetime.   When Pohl died in 1993, one of his former graduate students observed something uncanny. All the Costa Rican bamboo Pohl had brought to the University Greenhouse was in bloom. The bamboo had grown for years without ever flowering and like Pohl, they were at the end their life cycle. Once bamboo flowers, it dies.       Thanks for listening to the daily gardener, and remember: "For a happy, healthy life, garden every day."

On November 1, 1755, All Saints Day, the city of Lisbon, Portugal was hit by a massive earthquake. The shaking lasted more than three-and-a-half minutes. Frightened residents ran out from beneath their crumbling buildings for the open safety of the harbor. But those who lingered too long, were swept out to sea by the tsunami that followed forty minutes later. And then came five days of fire. The earthquake not only shook up the people of Portugal; it had a profound effect on the European Enlightenment.
