The need for humor and for incorporating something of the clown's state of mind into spiritual practice is discussed. Bernie Glassman was a Zen master who invited Moshe Cohen, a clown performer, to help him learn tools to work with students who were taking themselves too seriously. The clown doesn't know what will happen when he or she enters the stage. His improvisation is about encounters with everything he comes in contact with--inside and outside. The clown lives in the present and has no history, no aim to say anything universal. He shows us his weaknesses and passions and mirrors our foibles, but not so that we see who we are. He is just being himself and so expresses our humanness in a non-judgmental way, which is why we like him. The clown's empathetic nature innocently addresses others' ailments. He is without self-importance, a nothing who is interested in everything, who inspires optimism and faces problems without being discouraged. He moves diagonally and plays with problems until they solve themselves. By not being ashamed to be foolish, to look at different sides of himself as he is, the clown explores contradictions that we don't see in ourselves, which is funny. Self-obsession makes us heavy when we take our minds so seriously. Humor can feed practice and lighten our spirit and the path. The true art of humor is always humor at oneself. We all have a funny part of ourselves which has often been repressed in childhood. Humor comes from creativity, not the logical mind. All we have to practice with is ourselves; our sensations are the path to intuition. We can invite lightness into our awareness by taking a breath. Host: Philip Brown, Founder of The Negotiation Club Guest: Moshe Cohen, Negotiation Trainer and Author of "Collywobbles; How to Negotiate When Negotiating Makes You Nervous" “Pause, reflect, excel—slowing down is the key to negotiation mastery.” Episode Overview: In this insightful episode of the Negotiation Podcast, host Philip Brown engages in a compelling conversation with Moshe Cohen, a seasoned negotiation expert, mediator, and author. The episode delves into the critical technique of “slowing down” in negotiations—a skill that can significantly impact the outcome of any negotiation scenario. Philip introduces Moshe Cohen, who brings decades of experience in negotiation and mediation. Moshe has been teaching negotiation since 1996 and currently shares his expertise at Boston University's business school. He is also the author of the book "Collywobbles: How to Negotiate When Negotiating Makes You Nervous", which focuses on managing emotions during negotiations. The Emotional Dynamics of Negotiation: Moshe discusses how emotions play a crucial role in negotiations, often influencing the outcome more than the negotiator's skills themselves. He explains that emotions are the first to respond in any negotiation scenario, which can lead to hasty decisions that might not align with the negotiator's strategy. This emotional response, whether it's excitement, anger, or fear, can derail even the best-prepared individuals. The Concept of “Slowing Down”: Central to this episode is the discussion on the technique of slowing down during negotiations. Moshe highlights how taking a moment to pause and manage emotions can prevent reactive decision-making and allow for more strategic, thoughtful responses. This technique involves recognizing physical cues—such as increased heart rate or tense muscles—that signal an emotional reaction and using those signals as a reminder to slow down. Practical Application and the Power of Practice: Philip and Moshe explore how negotiators can practice the art of slowing down in what they term “micro-moments.” These are the brief, critical instances in negotiations where emotions are likely to spike. By practicing how to manage these moments, negotiators can develop better control over their responses and improve their overall negotiation performance. Introducing the “Slow Down” Negotiation Card: The episode also introduces the use of Negotiation Cards as practical tools for reinforcing this technique. One such card, aptly named “Slow Down,” is specifically designed to remind negotiators to pause and manage their emotions before responding. This card is not just a concept; it's a key takeaway from the episode that listeners can use in negotiation role-plays to solidify their learning. That's because at The Negotiation Club we believe in taking the lessons learned from experts like Moshe Cohen and turning them into actionable practice tools. So the “Slow Down” Negotiation Card is part of our unique approach to help you internalise and apply these critical negotiation skills. Whether you are participating in our negotiation role-plays, starting your own negotiation practice group, or simply looking for a practical way to enhance your skills, this card serves as a constant reminder that there is no progress without practice. Benefits of Slowing Down: Slowing down in negotiation has several advantages. It improves decision-making by allowing negotiators to assess situations more thoroughly and respond strategically. Additionally, it projects confidence to the other party, as a thoughtful pause can be perceived as a sign of control and competence. By avoiding impulsive reactions, negotiators are more likely to stay aligned with their strategy and achieve better outcomes. Conclusion and Key Takeaways: The episode concludes with a discussion on the importance of progress over perfection in negotiation practice.... just like in the scene from "The Equaliser"! Moshe emphasises that while no one can completely eliminate emotional reactions, even small improvements in managing those reactions can lead to better negotiation outcomes. Practicing the technique of slowing down, even if it's only effective 5% more of the time, can make a significant difference. This episode is a must-listen for anyone looking to enhance their negotiation skills, particularly in managing emotions under pressure. Moshe Cohen's insights offer practical strategies that can be immediately applied, making this a valuable resource for both novice and experienced negotiators alike. Tune in to learn how slowing down can empower you to navigate negotiations more effectively and confidently. JOIN The Negotiation Club! We highly recommend anyone interested in building their negotiation skills to consider joining The Negotiation Club, starting their own club, or simply getting a deck of our negotiation cards to practice. Remember, there is no progress without practice, and the “Slow Down” Negotiation Card is just one of the many Negotiation Cards we offer to help you refine your negotiation skills. SUBSCRIBE... Eitan Cohen, 13, is determined to head back to class after the Victoria Day long weekend—despite months of being bullied, taunted, threatened and assaulted by a few fellow students in his school in Toronto, in the wake of Oct. 7. It came to a head on May 17, when hundreds of neighbours and friends came to walk Eitan to Faywood Arts-Based Curriculum School. It was a show of solidarity for the boy and his family. His parents—two Israeli doctors who came to Canada for specialized training—say they initially tried to enrol their four children in private Jewish schools while they were in Canada, but eventually decided to send them to public school so the kids could to learn about Canadian diversity. But after Oct. 7, they say they have been complaining in vain to Toronto school officials—and also to Toronto police—about the atmosphere of Jew-hatred impacting both Eitan and his younger brother Hillel, who also attended the same school. Toronto's police confirm the hate crime unit is now actively investigating one incident from last week, alongside two other investigations that remain open. The Cohens are already making plans to return to Israel and Eitan could have switched to a Jewish religious school until the end of June. But he won't quit: if he leaves now, he says, it will mean open season for bullies to ramp up antisemitic attacks on other Jewish students who attend public schools in Toronto. On today's episode of The CJN Daily, Ellin Bessner sits down at the home of Eitan and his parents, Moshe Cohen and Adi Halberthal Cohen, to find out what safety plans are in place for this week—and why they went public with their struggles. Humans are primarily emotional. We bring fears into our negotiations. If we push too hard, we might get nothing. If we antagonize the other party, they might retaliate. We also worry about damaging relationships. The whole negotiation process is emotional. And when you get emotional, your ability to do what you know you should do decreases. Two years ago, Moshe Cohen published “Collywobbles: How to Negotiate When Negotiating Makes You Nervous.” The term “Collywobbles” means the kind of stomachache you get when doing something that makes you anxious. His book looks to address an issue people are taught how to do, but when they have to do it, they choke. Something happens between theory and execution. Usually, they get nervous or anxious. So what do you do when you feel like your emotions are taking over? Moshe shares some strategies in this episode of Negotiations Ninja. Cohen explains how to understand your triggers and use your emotions and those of your counterparts to your advantage.
To assist in expediting mainframe application delivery via continuous integration and testing, IBM is introducing the IBM Continuous Integration Solution for System z (CIz). This is a complete solution for planning, automating, and monitoring application quality and testing, as well as linking testing to build and provisioning of application environments -- as a seamless process. Clients can get better quality, faster -- in some cases compressing the application delivery cycle from months to weeks or days, while reducing the cost of eliciting and repairing defects by up to 90%. In addition, automated mainframe testing can be performed at low-cost, using no mainframe development MIPS, by executing the tests on a x86-based z/OS environment.
