Dustin Plantholt’s “Life’s Tough—You Can Be Tougher” podcast this week features John Tesh, internationally celebrated recording artist, composer, concert pianist and national radio/television personality. His Intelligence for Your Life radio show currently airs on 350 stations and reaches 14 million people each week. John was born on July 9, 1952 in Garden City, New York, on Long Island. Proficient on the piano and trumpet from the age of six, he was named to the New York State Symphonic Orchestra in high school. He also enjoyed playing the organ in several rock bands during his adolescent years. As a communications and music major at North Carolina State University, John got suspended for forging a professor’s signature (while trying to change majors) and soon after found himself living in a tent in a North Carolina public park (after being kicked out of his family home). Utilizing his savvy communications skills, he talked his way into a part-time job at a local radio station and parlayed it into a meteoric career in journalism: from serving as an award-winning CBS News correspondent in Nashville and New York City, to hosting network coverage of international sporting events (1992 and 1996 Olympic Games, Tour de France, Wimbledon), and eventually becoming co-host of Entertainment Tonight that lasted a decade. An aspiring musician, John’s self-produced first album sold a mere one thousand copies. Determined with unwavering tenacity, he and his wife, Connie Sellecca, took an outrageous gamble and huge financial risk and created a television special, John Tesh: Live at Red Rocks—that resulted in one of the most successful Public Television concert specials in history. From the extraordinary success of the special, John left his seven-figure TV job and launched into a full-time music career that earned him six Emmy Awards, 4 Gold albums, 8 million records sold, and continuous sold out concert tours. With endless drive and their passion to give back, John and Connie then created a self-syndicated radio show, Intelligence for Your Life, a lifestyle program—airing on over three hundred radio stations and heard by tens of millions of people each week—that offers advice and expert opinions on topics such as health, finance, relationships, careers, and family. In 2015, John overcame a terminal cancer diagnosis by relying on the steadfast determination and grit that have been the hallmarks of his life and career. In his upcoming memoir, Relentless: Unleashing a Life of Purpose, Grit, and Faith (releasing February 25, 2020), John reveals his secret to overcoming the many pivotal challenges he’s faced, in the hope that readers will find inspiration and guidance they can apply to overcome their own struggles. Combining inspirational stories with a lifetime of wisdom, John’s memoir encourages readers with the powerful message that their challenges and failures can become learning opportunities and the fuel for persevering to personal greatness. Most importantly, readers learn of John’s strong faith in the healing power of Scripture and how that has shaped his life—especially the moment when he and Connie discovered divine healing and how that ultimately contributed to his victory over cancer. John and Connie live in Los Angeles, California. John’s accolades include induction into the National Radio Hall of Fame and the North Carolina Music Hall of Fame; winner of the Syndicated Personality/Show of the Year award by Radio & Records magazine for his radio show; a Keyboard Magazine Award; and owning the unique distinction of composing what critics have hailed as “the greatest sports theme in television history” for NBC Sports basketball. In sticking to his philanthropic character, John’s live television concerts, including the inspiring “Live at Red Rocks,” have raised millions for Public Television. Join Dustin and John for a genuine and profound conversation on the pivotal moments in life that defines us and our purpose. “Having people see my collection of inexplicable successes and failures” John says, “hopefully will help them find inspiration and practical guidance in my personal road map—as unplanned and haphazardly drawn as it was at times.”

Early on, Tommy Sablan learned the power of asking for help. During his senior year of high school in 1982, Tommy was spotted by a counselor as he was about to skip school. The counselor asked him to stay instead and listen to a talk about the radio industry by Jonathan Lang. After jumping at a chance to answer music trivia questions during the career talk, Tommy Sablan got an invite to the KBEST 95 station the next day. It was just the help he needed to be pointed toward his destiny. The future radio producer was born and raised in Chula Vista by his mother. Going to a radio station seemed like a huge deal for him at that age. “I was just a poor kid from Chula Vista. I remember my mom drove me in a 1977 Ford Maverick and took me to the radio station. I got a tour and I’ve been there ever since,” Tommy Sablan said on the Digital Hospitality podcast about getting a boost of help at the start of his career. It was a big break that came because others were looking out for him and inspired him to be his best. “They gave a kid a break.” A Hall of Fame Producer and Person The media producer and San Diego radio legend is someone we feel like we’ve known a decade, even though it’s only been a year since we first met Tommy Sablan at KUSI. In no short time he became a part of our extended Cali BBQ Media family. The KUSI and iHeartRadio producer has a long history in media, and the accolades to show for it. “Little Tommy” was the first producer inducted into the National Radio Hall of Fame, for example. That's a feat that only about 300 other industry personalities have accomplished. “First and only. And radio’s been on for a very long time, from Bob Hope to Red Buttons to Burns and Allen to Casey Kasem," Tommy said on Digital Hospitality. “I say that with lots of pride.” https://youtu.be/KCcDRm3NRfo Tommy Sablan was inducted into the National Radio Hall of Fame in 2016 for his work as an on-air producer on the Jeff and Jer Show. He first started on that program in 1988. Tommy is now in an elite class of radio legends, including Howard Stern and Rick Dees. He currently produces the Coe Lewis show, which airs from 3-7 p.m. on 101.5 KGB in San Diego. “The reason why the Jeff and Jer Show was so successful was our relationship with listeners,” Tommy Sablan told Shawn Walchef on Digital Hospitality. “Everything we are known for, everything people think of us for, it was listener related.” Tommy’s career is inspiring, not just for what he’s accomplished in the industry, but because he’s used his platforms to help others. For example: In only three hours, the Jeff and Jer morning show raised $1 million for the Red Cross to help fire victims. That’s just one of so many different ways that Tommy has tried to help others. Breaking and Entering Christmas Each year, his Breaking and Entering Christmas campaign helps a family in need during the holiday season. Cali BBQ was happy to help his efforts by providing our slow-smoked barbecue for the gathering of goodwill during Breaking and Entering Christmas 2019. https://youtu.be/W6zBZY6lM5c It was an emotional and impactful December morning. Watching Tommy Sablan orchestrate it all was beautiful and inspiring. Tommy Sablan also gives back to others by sharing stories of his family’s past to help kids at Juvenile Hall, people in prison, and more. “Yes, my brothers were heroin addicts and they got strung out on heroin, but they were good people. And that’s the message I tell, and that’s why I’m believed when I talk to kids at juvie or families,” Tommy Sablan said. The struggles of addiction touch most everyone in some way. Tommy himself is 12 years clean, which he discusses on Digital Hospitality. “I’ve been there and I’ve seen it. … It’s not their fault that addiction from heroin, from that opiate, got to their soul.” Old Media meets New Media The Tommy Sablan Digital Hospitality episode was recorded from the iHeartRa...
82 years ago this show was broadcast on CBS on December 22... 1937. Comedian Fred Allen was the host of "Town Hall Tonight" which was the prelude to his "Allen's Alley" comedy show. His wife, Portland Hoffa was also featured on the program along with the Mighty Allen Art Players. Fred Allen was an incredibly good comedian and he knew how to entertain radio audiences. He developed many different and very entertaining characters who would "drop in" for a short visit on the show. On this program though, he welcomes Jack Benny who was his competition on NBC. In fact Allen and Benny had a mock feud going in competition with their shows. They made fun of each others programs and the "feud" simply raised the size of the listening audience, so they kept it up for years with some very funny results. Allen was born and in Cambridge, Massachusetts and graduated from Boston University. (Side note: Fred Allen (John Florence Sullivan was his real name) was in my grandmother's high school class!) Fred Allen was the most admired and frequently censored comedian on radio... he did a lot of ad-libbing that got him in trouble with sponsors and network executives. President Franklin Roosevelt was an avowed Fred Allen fan as were James Thurber, William Faulkner, John Steinberg, and Herman Wouk. Allen has stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and was inducted into the National Radio Hall of Fame in 1988. He was born in 1884 and died in 1956 at the age of 61. This show is in two playlists "Comedy" and "Christmas"

As host of American Top 40, Kasem was the nation’s tastemaker, doling out hit singles and music factoids as he counted down each week’s most popular songs for nearly 35 years. A talent that transcended his medium, Kasem became a household name thanks to his distinctly trademark voice, his aspiring catchphrases and his love and genuine enthusiasm of the music he was broadcasting nationwide every week. After bouncing around the nation as a disc jockey from the mid-1950s to the early 1960s, Kasem finally landed in Los Angeles in the late Sixties. He first enjoyed showbiz success as a voice actor, lending his versatile pipes to cartoon characters like Robin and, most famously, Shaggy in Scooby-Doo, a role Kasem would fill from 1969 to 2010. From there, Kasem used his disc jockey skills – which he honed as an announcer for Armed Forces Radio Korea when he was in the Army – to co-create and host American Top 40, a syndicated weekly music countdown show that would become pop radio’s equivalent of Dick Clark’s American Bandstand. For his vast work in the entertainment industry, Kasem was awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1981. Four years later, he was inducted into the National Association of Broadcasters’ Hall of Fame for his radio career. Kasem is also a member of the National Radio Hall of Fame. Kasem’s run as host of American Top 40 began in 1970, giving him a national platform to showcase his unique personality and epic catchphrases like “The hits don’t stop ’til we reach the top” and “Keep your feet on the ground and keep reaching for the stars.” Kasem remained with the program until 1988, when a contract dispute led him to start his own syndicated countdown show called Casey’s Top 40. With Kasem no longer the voice of American Top 40 — radio host Shadoe Stevens took over the role — ratings for AT40 plummeted as stations instead picked up Casey’s Top 40. American Top 40 was ultimately canceled in 1995; three years later, Kasem himself acquired the rights to the show and reinstated himself as host. Kasem was a mainstay on radios until January 4th, 2004. https://twitter.com/absolutegold1
Today I have the honour and privilege to speak with the cohost of the Eternal Leadership Podcast. He interviews incredibly inspiring and successful business professionals alongside his good friend John Ramstead. Steve Reiter is an entrepreneur, Husband, Father, Podcast Host and shares his story of how he faced burnout, left his job, began to work for himself and helped his wife heal from a long term illness. It is an incredible journey of faith, time to listen to God and we get into the tough moments and the difficult decisions he faced long before the fruit came into his life. Steve worked for Focus on the family for 15 years with Dr. Dobson. He was his Chief Audio Engeneer. It was the first religious broadcast inducted into the National Radio Hall of Fame . His work began taking a toll on his health. There was a tension, and stress present and after about 6 months, he turned in his resignation. He had lost 20lbs in one month and his doctor advised him to take his health seriously. Steve experienced tangible pain listening to spoken word, his body was saying STOP! He took 6 months off and began to listen and notice what was coming next into his life. He had several friends that told him he should be a financial advisor. He took a couple of weeks to pray about it, and has clients lining up before he got his licence. Steve likes to hike 14ers. They are mountains 14000 feet and higher, he hiked Mt. Antero and went to the top of the mountain thinking he would hear the answer from God, but…… he got nothing. Upon thinking on why that was, he began to think, maybe he had been given the answer through the circumstances. He had John Ramstead mentoring him, with clients in the 50-500-million-dollar range. He did great his first year until his wife got sick. She was sick for six months, and then again for another 6 months and most of it bed ridden. It was because of the clients that he has already established, that he was ok. It kept the roof over his head, food on the table. His journey was over 7 years long and was about inner growth. Those close to him advised him that he had inner crap holding him back and it was causing him to doubt himself. He was consistent and kept trying different things. Steve received a break through and others noticed. They ask him what he did in pursuit of a formula. He tells us the path is different for everyone and always keeps going. The internal reality needs to match the external reality or people self savage when they reach a higher level of success. Steve knew that he was going to make it to a higher level and that he needed to have his internal reality exceed it. Listen to the podcast to hear the whole story! On Monday's Mark Levin Show, Carl Bernstein and CNN are now suggesting that the media should edit President Trump’s press conferences, rather than airing them live. What Bernstein really wants to say is that because the president is a propagandist and a liar, we in the media have to take the actual news of what he’s saying and edit it and decide what is our view of the news, with our liberal values. This gives you insight into how fools like this think. The problem with the people that populate the media is their ideology, their motivation, and their purpose. The press need to be examined and we need to study what the role of the press has historically been in our nation. They are ideologically driven and are incapable of restraining themselves to simply gather the facts and report the news. Then, Mark's Wikipedia page continues to smear him despite numerous requests for correction. These false attributions and mischaracterizations are proof that the left will use any media medium available to them for their political attacks. This is character assassination. Finally, Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity gave gracious speeches on Mark's induction into the National Radio Hall of Fame. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

Golden voice narrator Robin Miles narrates a biography of Richard Durham, an African-American radio broadcaster who was posthumously inducted into the National Radio Hall of Fame. Durham rose as an intellectual during a period when African-American writing was getting increased attention after WWII, and his story is good listening for history buffs. Robin Miles narrates with smooth transitions, and even sings out some of the spirituals featured in the story. On Monday’s Mark Levin Show, Mark will be inducted into the National Radio Hall of Fame and it’s all thanks to you. This program wouldn’t have the ratings it has without Levinites listing on AM, FM, satellite, the Mark Levin app, and podcast. This vote isn’t about Mark but about us, our principles, our values, and our beliefs. Also, President Obama and Jeh Johnson had detention centers and separated children from their illegal alien parents, yet nobody compared them to Hitler like what is being done to President Trump. Johnson has said that we can’t have catch and release, except that is exactly what Democrats want – utter and complete lawlessness. The media never attacked the Obama administration or demanded to see their detention centers, which proves this entire debate is a fraud. Later, driving up the cost of things like steel and aluminum hurts manufacturers, which hurts consumers and everyone else downstream. The price of production goes up, which causes the price of the product to go up, meaning you pay more. This is exactly why tariffs are a bad idea. Finally, San Francisco was once a beautiful city until left wing kooks got a hold of it, and now it’s filled with homeless camps. This is just another example of what happens when progressives have full control. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices

On Monday’s Mark Levin show, Rudy Giuliani said that President Trump has no intention of pardoning himself but he does have the power to do so. The left has determined that Trump Constitutionally can’t pardon himself – the same leftists that despise the Constitution. But they have no constitutional background and can’t point to a single thing at the Constitutional Convention or any of the ratification conventions to support this. Article II, Section 2 of the Constitution says the power to grant reprieves and pardons for offenses against the United States, except in cases of impeachment, is vested in the president. That includes federal criminal acts or possible federal criminal acts. The Constitution does not say the president cannot pardon himself, and the subject never came up in the framer’s notes. To claim that the president cannot pardon himself is rewriting Article II, Section 2. Also, the mainstream media isn’t talking about the Supreme Court ruling protecting religious liberty, but rather how a gay couple got denied from having a same-sex wedding cake baked. The couple knew the baker was an evangelical Christian and targeted him to force their agenda. Later, voting for the 2018 National Radio Hall of Fame inductees is live! On Friday’s Mark Levin Show, the Democratic National Committee’s multimillion dollar lawsuit against President Trump, Russia, and Wikileaks is a stupid publicity stunt and it’s going to backfire. The DNC has opened themselves up for discovery and deposition. Trump and everyone named in the case should use this as an opportunity to defend themselves by going on offense. Also, James Comey has condemned himself by leaking memos to his lawschool friend because some of them contained classified info. His memos were written using government equipment and on government time; they are not personal under any stretch of federal law so for Comey to claim they are personal is absurd. We should be investigating Comey for stealing government property on top of leaking classified information. In addition, Trump has been set up since day 1 by Barack Obama, James Comey, Andrew McCabe, James Clapper, and everyone involved in the Steele dossier. If they all got away with it, where would we be today? The Democrat party has surrendered to the temptations of tyranny, trying to destroy American principles in order to advance Progressivism. Finally, Mark has been nominated for induction into the National Radio Hall of Fame and it’s because of the listeners launching Mark into the national radio spotlight that this is possible. John Records Landecker is a bona fide radio star, soon to be inducted into the National Radio Hall of Fame. He’s perhaps best know for his trademark saying "Records Truly is My Middle Name” also the name of his book ─ now entering it’s second printing with an updated “Hall of Fame” edition. Starting in small market Michigan radio, he quickly ascended to major markets like Philly and Chicago, where for years he held court at the legendary “Big 89, WLS” (or as he put it, “the Enormous but not too gaudy 89”). There he was part of a lineup that included such radio luminaries as Larry Lujack, Tommy Edwards, Fred Winston, and Dick Biondi to name just a few. John is also famous for benchmark bits like “Boogie Check”, “Americana Panorama” and “Press My Conference”. Next came stints at other Chicago stations including WJMK, Magic 104.7 and his weekend show "Into the Seventies”. All this was followed by a return to WLS, both on AM and FM in the 2000’s, and he’s still going strong today with a show on his local hometown station WEFM! In this episode, we’re treated to some strong insights from a Hall of Famer who has been to the mountaintop – and is not afraid to speak out.

Sonja Williams has always loved music and that led her to award-winning public radio shows. She now is a professor in the Department of Media, Journalism, and Film at Howard University and just penned her first book. She has amassed an amazing body of work in broadcast and print since receiving her master’s degree in Communication from at Ohio University. During her career Williams has received three prestigious George Foster Peabody Awards for Significant and Meritorious Achievement for groundbreaking music programming and audio documentaries for National Public Radio, Public Radio International and the Smithsonian Institution. She created a 26 part audio documentary called Wade in the Water: African American Sacred Music Traditions, Black Radio: Telling It Like it Was and NPR’s Making the Music with Wynton Marsalis. Williams talks with Spectrum's Tom Hodson about her early days in radio and how she was able to marry her love for music with her passion for audio storytelling. Williams has now turned her career to print. She discusses her new book, Word Warrior: Richard Durham, Radio and Freedom, just published in 2015 by the University of Illinois Press. It is a biography about a “gifted broadcast dramatist, journalist and activist” – who lived from 1917 to 1984. He wrote radio dramas in the 1940’s and had a radio series called Destination Freedom. In addition to his radio work, he was an investigative reporter for the Chicago Defender, wrote television shows and ghost-wrote Muhammad Ali’s book The Greatest. Ira Glass, the award-winning creator and host of This American Life, will be in Athens at 7:30 p.m. March 12th at Templeton Blackburn Memorial Auditorium to present “An Evening with Ira Glass: Reinventing Radio.” Recently, he chatted with WOUB’s Tom Hodson about creating radio content, audio storytelling and the mechanics of putting together a weekly national radio program. He talked about the early days of This American Life, being highly selective about stories they choose to air, and the explosive popularity of podcasting. This American Life is celebrating its 20th year on public radio. It is a mixture of entertainment and news, according to Glass. It is designed to present riveting stories based upon weekly themes. Selecting great stories to broadcast is a key factor to success, Glass says. He notes that they kill up to 50 percent of the stories they begin and instead concentrate on those that have the most potential to highly engage the audience. Glass says that he is thrilled about the popularity of podcasting and added that Serial, a podcast series created and produced by This American Life staffers, has the record of being the most listened to podcast in history. Currently, This American Life is heard by 2.2 million radio listeners per week on more than 500 radio stations. When podcasts are added to the total, more than 5 million people listen to each show. Glass points out that these are higher numbers than most television programs or cable networks. This American Life, distributed through PRX (Public Radio Exchange) has won the highest awards in broadcasting – including five Peabody Awards. In 2009, Glass received the coveted Edward R. Murrow Award for Outstanding Contributions. He earned a George Polk Award in Radio Reporting in 2011 and was inducted into the National Radio Hall of Fame in November 2014. Glass began his radio career in 1978 at age 19 as an intern at National Public Radio. He then got a full-time job at NPR where he worked as a reporter, producer, and guest host for Morning Edition, All Things Considered, Talk of the Nation and Weekend All Things Considered. Glass was reared in Baltimore Co. Maryland. He received his undergraduate degree from Brown University where he studied semiotics – what causes stories to create certain emotions in readers and listeners.
