We love having Fred Jacobs from Jacobs Media on the show to discuss things like Tech Survey and the AQ Study. What do listeners come to radio for? Well since 2018 it has been for personalities first, then music. I'm not sure what you are being told from your program director, but depending on the market or format, they could be working off some old thinking. We also spoke about the lack of women in various radio roles including on air and the need for more female program directors. We also discussed the disconnect between AI and innovation, and some of the perceptions that "podcasting is taking over" when in fact, most radio P1 listeners are not that interested in the medium. One of the more successful formats is Christian Radio when has all the things commercial radio strives for... an emotional connection with listeners. We also discussed the financial struggles of public radio. If your radio station is interested in participating in the Tech Survey Study for 2025, click here. After 7 and a half years, the longest gap between appearances in Sound Off Podcast history, Leslie Scott finally returns. And to say things have changed is a massive understatement.Back in 2016, Leslie was the PD for 107.7 The End in Seattle, driving the station to huge success in the millennial market. Since then, she's taken on a few more stations, been elevated to overseeing programming of Audacy's exclusive streaming-only channels... And like so many people in radio, been restructured out of a job. Their loss. We discuss where Leslie's currently at both life and career wise, but mainly this is a time for us to catch up and learn how Leslie's thoughts and predictions from 2016 have aged. For the most part, Leslie's values remain the same: Radio and digital should be friends, not enemies; Radio stations need to focus on curating personalities above all else; and the youngest generation is a giant well of untapped potential listeners who should be catered to. However, interestingly, Leslie is no longer a part of that youngest generation. She once was a sort of "Millennial Whisperer" in the radio industry, but Gen Z is a whole different beast, which we discuss at length. 7 years doesn't sound like a long time, but it really is, especially in an industry that's been scrambling so hard to keep up with the youth, and Leslie has a lot of thoughts about the way things have changed. We also discuss women's progress in the radio industry, or rather, its stagnation in recent years. Fred Jacobs of Jacobs Media published his AQ6 survey earlier this year, which you can read about here. It showed that women's representation in radio hasn't really improved since 2019. Being both a woman herself and serving on the board of directors for mentoring and inspiring women in radio, Leslie shares some interesting insights into why that might be.If you haven't heard our original interview with Leslie, and you'd like to compare for yourself, you can listen to it here. If nothing else, it's an interesting time capsule to a world before TikTok.A Transcript and video version of the episode is available on the network page. Please sign up for the SOUNDING OFF Newsletter. EPISODE SUMMARY: Paul Jacobs, Vice President and General Manager of Jacobs Media, shares his journey in the radio industry and founding a consultancy with his brother Fred Jacobs. He discusses his success in programming and sales and his work championing radio's future. On this episode of Chachi Loves Everybody, Chachi talks to Paul Jacobs about:Growing up in Detroit and starting a bagel delivery business as a kidWorking with his brother for the first time at WRIFThe collaboration between programming and sales and how he rose through the station ranks from sales to gmJoining his brother Fred at Jacobs Media and launching the Jacobs Media BlogNegotiating with Apple for CarPlay and the future of radio in the automotive industryAttending CES and the importance of Xperi and new technology to radio's futureHow constantly reinventing yourself and staying ahead of industry trends is key to long-term successHis advice for young people entering the industryAnd more!ABOUT THIS EPISODE'S GUEST: Paul Jacobs is the “suit” of Jacobs Media, rising up through the sales ranks to become a General Manager of a major market radio station at age 28. After graduating from Michigan State University in 1976 with a BA in Advertising, Paul immediately went to work selling radio for WNIC-FM in Detroit, where he realized one could actually make money selling air. After a brief stint working for the William A. Robinson marketing services agency in Chicago, where he created campaigns for Philip Morris and Seagram's, Paul struck gold when he was hired as an Account Executive at WRIF-FM in Detroit. This experience launched his sales management career, and four years later, he became the General Sales Manager for KZEW-FM in Dallas, and ultimately, the General Manager for KHYI-FM, also in Dallas. He was lured home to run WDFX-FM in Detroit, before joining Jacobs Media as its General Manager in 1991.Along with overseeing our day-to-day operations, Paul's main contribution has been the addition of sales consulting services. As an expert in all Rock formats, Paul has helped our clients open up new revenue streams by aiding them in their understanding of how to sell, market, and position their formats via sales training seminars. He's currently focused on helping broadcasters transform their business models from being primarily focused on radio, to taking a more “platform” approach, using content to appeal to new audiences and generate revenue. Paul is a true “radio champion” – someone who believes in the power of branding, and developing radio's inherent assets.ABOUT THE PODCAST: Chachi Loves Everybody is brought to you by Benztown and hosted by the President of Benztown, Dave “Chachi” Denes. We welcome back Fred Jacobs, the media visionary and founder of Jacobs Media Strategies, known for creating the Classic Rock format in the 80s. This time, Fred emphasizes the importance of innovation in the radio industry. He expresses optimism about radio's future and ways you can succeed, but he also highlights the need for creative formats and reaching diverse audiences. We also dig into podcasting, where Fred expresses a somewhat bearish outlook on stand-alone podcasts due to saturation and challenges in audience discovery and monetization, but also shares ways in which established radio brands can still use podcasts to advantage. As always, Fred provides key insights into what we can learn from radio's past, present, and thoughts on our future, touching on topics like podcasting, AI, and marketing strategies.One-Minute MartinizingPlease help us thank these supporters who help keep BRANDWIDTH ON DEMAND free!Musicmaster Radio Swag Shop Morning Show Boot CampReturn to Brandwidth on Demand episodesYES! Paul and Fred Jacobs start off every year by going to Consumer electronics Show in Las Vegas. It invigorates and really sets the table for the year. The show takes place the first week of January when many are still in their Christmas and New Year's stupor when many are unaware of what day it is.In this episode, I ask Paul about what he saw at CES and discuss the dash, AI, the future of AM radio, and the future of Public Radio. We also get into the three R's which include radio, retail and recession. Paul has a very steadfast answer for that third one and I can tell you based on what I have seen with travel and the number of houses being renovated on my street - he's right. Please take the time to check out this webinar from Jacobs Media about what Fred and Paul saw at CES. It'd one hour and 7 minutes and it is designed to show radio people where we may be headed in the future. It will cost you only your email address and you will be rewarded with a daily blog which is also useful.I also was unaware that Sheri Lynch went to CES for the first time and she is a truly forward thinking broadcaster and shared her thoughts about what she saw.A thanks to the people who support the show each week and allow it arrive on your phones for free.Matt Fogarty VoiceoversNLogic: TV & radio advertising and audience data solutionsMegatrax - Licensed Music for your radio station or podcast production company. Here is a transcription if you need one. Corey and Gordon maintain their record of having neither attended nor gushed about the annual gadget-fest in Las Vegas, but they did decide to do something other than poke fun at it this time. In this episode, they ring up two other smarties -- Fred Jacobs of Jacobs Media, and media disruption expert Todd Handy -- to get their impressions. What did this year's CES foretell for media and advertising?
The disappearance of the AM band, the new realities of audience reporting, our relationship with social media. The future of radio is a bit of a mystery and Fred Jacobs tries to help make some sense of it.
It has been 515 days since we had Fred Jacobs has been on the show. Back then we were unpacking a lot of the surprising results from a Covid induced Tech Survey. This time we have the benefit of catching up on three pieces of research that I felt needed discussing: The two Tech Survey's for Public Radio and Commercial radio, and the AQ4 Survey which targets air talent. The fourth instalment of AQ was released at Morning Show Boot Camp in Chicago in August and it is an eye opening piece of research that is riveting for air talent as it allows them to feel a little more connected in the daily battle of content creation in 2022. You can link to the results here. Fred feels that the research is important enough to share with your radio group. If you over see a number of radio stations and need your owner, VP or local decision maker to see the results, Fred has made himself available and you can reach him at +1 248-353-9030. It takes about 45 minutes.Matt's Hot Take: If the report were about what your clients thought of you, you'd have a copy on the corner of your desk.CLICK HERE to get a transcript of this episode.A thanks to the people who support the show each week and allow it arrive on your phones for free.Matt Fogarty VoiceoversnLogicMegatrax - Licensed Music for your radio station or podcast production company.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
Why has AM/FM radio survived Walkmans, iPods, Pandora, smart speakers and now podcasts? Fresh from a new survey of 30,000 station listeners, longtime radio analyst Fred Jacobs sits in as co-host for Corey and joins Gordon on the debate over why radio lives on. The podcast features an interview with Bill Rose discussing audience measurement and Nielsen's hip new Personal People Meter.
"We've got a lot of people who listen to a lot of radio, but what I always gravitate to are those who say, 'I listen under an hour a day," says Fred Jacobs of Jacobs Media. That group comprises about 9% of the respondent sample for Techsurvey 2022, the results of which were presented today in a Zoom webinar. Participation from 474 radio stations was seen this year, producing nearly 31,000 surveys from "core" radio listeners.Jacobs shared a lot of information, and RBR+TVBR's InFOCUS Podcast, presented by dot.FM, offers key takeaways and highlights in this edited audio report.

Amazon has changed the way we read, and the way we shop. Could they change the way we consume audio?Respected podcast journalist Ashley Carman reported in the Verge this week about an Amazon plan called "Project Mic." The idea is to combine elements of Clubhouse, traditional radio and more, to turn anyone into a DJ - with the ability to create content with music. These programs can be then streamed over Audible, Amazon Music, Twitch, and Alexa-equipped devices. You can read Carman's scoop here: https://www.theverge.com/2021/10/26/22744585/amazon-project-mic-launch-live-audio-appI wonder what affect that could have on podcasting, as Amazon is already diving into the space. And they've already shown they have the power to disrupt industries. Also, what affect could that have on radio? Will it take someone from outside the industry to revolutionize it? Great piece on this from Fred Jacobs of Jacobs media this week. https://jacobsmedia.com/if-radio-wont-reinvent-itself-maybe-someone-else-will/A couple of Facebook execs made an appearance on the New Media show with Blubrry's Todd Cochrane and Libsyn's Rob Greenlee, to talk about what their company is doing with podcasts and audio. You can see or hear the show here. https://newmediashow.com/2021/10/21/facebook-podcasting-team/Podcast guru Tom Webster says to remember that Facebook isn't looking to help you boost your audience - it wants to bring your audience to THEIR platform. Webster's suggestion: use short clips to get people's attention, then they can easily find your show. Think about it. For as much as we mindlessly scroll through our feeds, how often do we consume a very long piece of content - audio, video, or text? Not too often. He's not wrong. https://tomwebster.media/look-for-the-flowers/Spotify is dipping its toes in the water of video. They are allowing select users of their Anchor platform to publish video versions of podcasts, which can then be consumed on Spotify, Smart TV's, and other devices. My take: it's something to keep an eye on to see if it gets any traction. But the Anchor app is still largely for hobbyists and has its issues. Don't use this news as a reason to head over there. https://techcrunch.com/2021/10/21/spotify-opens-up-access-to-video-podcast-publishing-to-anchor-creators/Finally, I often speak about the intimacy of audio. It's why a podcast can connect with an audience the way video can't. It's why you feel like you "know" your favorite podcast host just like you felt you "knew" your favorite morning show host. Well, someone is taking the phrase "intimacy of audio" and running with it. Enter "Heart to Heart," a new dating service that uses audio as a matchmaking tool. The startup has raised $750,000 in pre-seed funding. Sounds intriguing for those of us that have the proverbial "face for radio." https://techcrunch.com/2021/10/25/heart-to-heart-dating-pre-seed/Quick reminder - if a podcast is part of your 2022 marketing strategy, that's what I do. Don Kollins is kind of an ideal guest for this podcast. He is a Canadian living in California. He has worked in radio on both sides of the border. And he is innovative enough to use his experience to see a path to the future for radio. When he was the program director of Toronto's pre-eminent sports radio leader, the Fan 590, he found himself having to juggle a radio show on TV - which later became a TV show on radio, in the Bob McCown show. He sees an opportunity for every radio personality to have a digital relationship with Twitch. Once solely a gamers medium, radio personalities like Bubba the Love Sponge, Humble & Fred and The Milkman John Mielke have embraced the platform and build out their brands using Twitch.During the show, mention was made about the blog Fred Jacobs wrote about President Donald Trump using Twitch. You can read that here.We spoke to Don about his early days at Rawlco and Rogers, his move to Sports Radio and later to The Game 95.7 in San Francisco. I got to ask all about sports radio from the program director who succeeded Jason Barrett at that station. (Yes we will be having on a few more Sports Radio PD's over the next few months as the format is at the forefront of digital integration with radio)If you would like to get in touch with Don and know more about using Twitch for your radio station, please contact him here via LinkedIN. Talk about an interesting article by Fred Jacobs that might make radio people a little nervous. Benny The One-eyed Wonder Dog is going to have a rough couple of days. I'm headed out on the road for a few days. The moon landing was 50 years ago this week. You probably don't believe what I believe about aliens. The new Madden video game is out and players are pissed at how slow they are which leads to hilarity. Beware of "meth gators."

Voice interaction is becoming a common feature in cars but it is about more than just controlling temperature settings and navigation. Three innovators join Voicebot Podcast this week to share how they expect voice interaction in the car to evolve. John Foster, CEO of Aiqudo, discusses how tasks can be executed by using voice to activate one or more mobile apps while driving. Aiqudo's view is that all of the things you want to do are already reflected on the smartphone and the key is to make all of that accessible hands free while driving. Rachel Battish, vice president of product at Audioburst, outlined how her company is indexing audio content and making it accessible in short "bursts" that can be delivered in a series or in response to a query. Fred Jacobs of Jacobs Media discusses how radio and other audio content can maintain their historical role entertaining drivers as we transition from preset buttons to voice requests. The interviews were conducted onsite at Voice of the Car Summit.

On Ask Win today (Friday, February 15, 2019), Best-Selling Author, Win C welcomes Fred Jacobs. Fred has emerged over the past two decades as one of radio’s leading visionaries. He founded Jacobs Media in 1983, when he had the notion that Album Rock could be fragmented by the creation of the Classic Rock format. Today, Classic Rock stands out as the most successful radio format in the last 20 years. Prior to launching the company, Fred spent the majority of his time designing and managing research projects as the Director of Research for the Radio and Publishing divisions for Frank N. Magid Associates, a leading research and consulting firm. Later, Fred became Director of Radio Research for the ABC-FM Owned and Operated Radio Stations. From there, Fred gravitated to the station side, becoming program director for legendary WRIF-FM in Detroit, before forming Jacobs Media. In 2018, Fred was inducted into the National Radio Hall of Fame. He is the first radio consultant to ever receive this honor. Fred has a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Michigan, and a Master’s degree in Telecommunications from Michigan State University. To learn more about Fred visit https://jacobsmedia.com.
JJ "Jim" Johnston did something rather extraordinary last year. He committed to writing a blog everyday saluting someone in the radio or music industry. In an era where the social media stratosphere is predominantly negative, The project started on January 1 with Bruce Barker, wound its way through Victoria Day weekend with a tribute to yours truly, and then concluded on December 31 with David Marsden. These posts were shared across all social media platforms including Facebook. When you think about it, it's a great idea so that can be shared and re-shared by everyone going forward.JJ is continuing his work with his company JJ-IMS, which has now reached its way into radio in Australia, and extended beyond radio into management groups and talent in other media. This episode should have you considering your blog strategy for 2019. I marvel at people like Fred Jacobs who commit to writing 5 days a week, and JJ who wrote everyday for a year. There's more about this episode on our show page! Thanks also to the people who make this show possible every week including:PromosuiteMatt Fogarty VoiceoversJustin Dove at Core Image StudiosMegatraxNLogic

Fred Jacobs was a guest on Episode 53 in a preview to the Broadcasters Meet Podcasters sessions at Podcast Movement in 2017. I have always wanted to do an episode where we looked back at the evolution of his company and a tweet on the 35th anniversary of the company's creation reminded me that it's a good time to have that chat. We cover the creation of classic rock, his transition from the WRIF in Detroit to Jacobs Media, and his relationship to Buffalo where had a great success, a small failure, and a life long September 11th memory. We also talked a bunch about the discipline in writing a daily blog, the age of acceleration, the importance of non-radio conferences like the CES and Podcast Movement and the importance of networking, meeting people and attending cocktail parties.Resources:Subscribe the the Jacobs Media Blog - you won't regret it.The CES Webinar which was highly talked about at The ConclaveFred mentioned the name of Kashmir Birk whom he sat with on a panel, you can connect with his LinkedIn page here. Memorial Day weekend brought news of the passing of another kind of veteran. A veteran of the radio wars. Celebrated voice talent and imaging conceptualist NICK MICHAELS passed away unexpectedly due to a massive heart attack. Nick was a passionate media thought leader and innovator, who saw where much of the radio industry has headed, without ever losing his ever-evolving vision for what the audio experience could be. This retrospective offers both his previous comments and insights on the state of radio -- and what it CAN be. Also included: some of Nick’s finest audio examples of that philosophy in practice. There are many very good posts and tributes to Nick’s work which can be found on the internet. Perhaps one of the most salient was a blog post by fellow Brandwidth On Demand guest Fred Jacobs. Please see Fred’s reflections in the show notes. www.brandwidthondemand.com

Our second season is starting as a year of ‘firsts”. Our first confab coverage (Morning Show Boot Camp), and this time, our first ‘dual guest’ episode. Fred Jacobs is well known as one of radio’s leading visionaries. His JACOBS MEDIA created the Classic Rock format and with the initiation of the annual benchmark Jacobs Tech Surve, he’s been acclaimed as a pioneer in the connected car movement, and overseen the growth of their JACApps division. Steven Goldstein is recognized as a thought leader in audio programming, marketing and management. His track record of success spans virtually every major radio format for some of the nation's top broadcasting companies. He was a co-founding partner in Saga Communications, serving as Executive Vice President and Group PD from 986 until 2015, when he founded AMPLIFI MEDIA. Now these two have teamed up again for what could be a real game changer in bringing radio back into the home…with a new venture called Sonic AI. Their goal: teach YOU the ‘skills’ to make sure your station brand(s) join the new tech parade back INTO THE HOME! If you plan on being in radio the next year or more, this is a MUST HEAR episode!
Fred Jacobs is the president of Jacobs Media. Their tech surveys have become increasingly important as we progress through the digital revolution. The survey itself undergoes changes with the inclusion of new questions about personal assistant devices like Alexa. Which brings me to Podcast itself. Jacobs Media went all-in on podcasting a few years ago and I met up with Fred Jacobs and Seth Resler at Podcast Movement 16 in Chicago. This year they have partnered with the Podcast Movement Organizers to create Broadcaster meet Podcaster. You can read more about this exciting opportunity here. http://jacobsmedia.com/broadcasters-podcast-movement/ If you do wind up going to the conference in Anaheim August 23-25, please let me know so we can meet for a coffee or any of the other fine beverages served in the lobby bar. Of great interest to all radio people is this webinar that shows the relationship radio listeners have with podcasting. The webinar was done by Fred on June 15th and you can watch it now here. http://jacobsmedia.com/webinar-podcasting-radio-learned-techsurvey13/ This episode is brought to you by NLogic and their new cloud based application Lens for radio. http://go.nlogic.ca/l/130651/2017-04-26/m2xt4 Please rate and review the podcast as it helps others find it. At the beginning of the show, you heard part of the new single from Skye Holland called, "We Could Be". Download it and bring it to your next music meeting. https://sable.godaddy.com/c/28384?id=42885.2890.1.c20752e09753c320a39f81bafce4f1d5
