There are numerous passionate residents offering input, though the conversations are splintered and many voices are competing. A major proposal by the Shinnecock Nation for a gas station off Sunrise Highway — and, in the longer term, development on the bluff at Westwoods — has sparked concern among Hampton Bays residents. But there are other pressures: a developer has amassed parcels and has a vision for redevelopment. This Express Sessions forum brings together many of the players in one room to search for common ground and try to identify successful strategies for moving forward on the issues affecting Hampton Bays. THE PANEL: Marion Boden, Hampton Bays resident; Ray D'Angelo, President, Hampton Bays Civic Association; John Leonard, Founder, Hampton Bays Alliance; Gayle Lombardi, Director, Hampton Bays Civic Association; Cyndi McNamara, Southampton Town Councilwoman.

On the latest episode of "Inside the Circles," Mastercard's podcast about the future of work and the topics of now, host Latoya Bennett-Johnson chats with Thompson, a two-time intern at Mastercard who is now an account management director for North America, about her career journey and her passion for uplifting her community.  Brianna Thompson grew up mere miles from the opulent playgrounds of Hamptons, but her hometown of Hampton Bays is working class, and she was the first generation in her family to attend college. Mindful of the sobering statistics about low-income first-generation college students — only 11% complete their degree within six years — she established an annual scholarship at her high school for these students. That was only five years after she herself graduated from high school. Thompson started working at Mastercard upon graduation from Baruch College with a bachelor's in business administration and quickly advanced while working toward her MBA. But immediately after being hired, she starting thinking about how she could help other first-generation college students gain confidence and continue their education. With her signing bonus, she created a self-funded scholarship to be awarded to a Hampton Bays High School graduate who would also be a first-generation college student, and she continues to fund the award every year. After being named one of Mastercard's volunteers of the year through the company's CEO Force for Good Awards, she was able to fund five scholarships with a donation from the company. Tune in to their insightful chat...

Owned by John Catsimatidis' Red Apple Media, the station's studios are located in Red Apple Media headquarters on Third Avenue in Midtown Manhattan and its transmitter is in Lodi, New Jersey. Its 50,000-watt non-directional clear channel signal can be heard at night throughout much of the Eastern United States and Canada. It is the primary entry point for the Emergency Alert System in the New York metropolitan area and New Jersey. WABC simulcasts on WLIR-FM in Hampton Bays, New York, on eastern Long Island.[3] It is one of the country's oldest radio stations, WABC began broadcasting in early October 1921, originally as WJZ in Newark, New Jersey. From 1943 through 2007, the station served as the flagship for the original ABC Radio Network (and its direct predecessor, the Blue Network) and ABC's radio news service. While WABC has been a talk radio station since 1982, the station broadcast a Top 40 music format from 1960 to 1982. Prior to 1978, WABC was not only the dominant contemporary music station in New York City, but was also among the most-listened-to radio stations in North America, serving as a template for many other Top 40 stations around the country. During the time of Coronavirus almost all of us are affected to some degree or another. Surfers are more and more facing the question of whether to go surf? This ends up being one of the main topics around this "Notes from the Field" episode. We call around to get a temperature and feel of what surfers from different communities around the NY area are confronting and dealing with. We FaceTime chat with Mike Nelson of Unsound Surf in Long Beach to talk about the struggles of owning a retail business at this time. Then we hop on over to Montauk where we talk to The Kookcast Podcast host Chris Blotiau and try to understand what's been happening out east. There has been opposition to city surfers coming out to Montauk during this time and we dive into it with Chris. From there we cruise on over to Hampton Bays legend, Steven Bedford-Brown (No relation to the 90's pro Stuart Bedford-Brown). Steven lays out his thoughts on those who are clustering and not heading the warnings and what some of our biggest fears are with Coronavirus. Finally we catch up with Rockaway Local and one of the owners and operators of Locals Surf School and cafe, Michael Reinhart. Mike approaches the topic of whether surfing is necessary, how do you survive as a business owner and how do you keep yourself from going stir crazy with the lockdown in place. We plan on covering surfing in the time of Coronavirus all through the lockdown. This is just the first in a series. Steven Bedford Brown is as local as you can get in the Hampton Bays area. He started surfing around twelve years old, riding over the Ponquogue bridge year round with a few buddies. He grew up in a rigid pecking order that taught grommets respect and to protect their local spots. He’s taken the mantle as an elder in the lineup but times have changed and the once rigid pecking order has devolved into a bit of a free for all with the huge influx of new surfers and a litigious society where just burning a kook can get you in trouble with the law. Tyler sat down with Bedford to discuss the changing lineups, and positive ways to help return some order to the surf. Methods that reflect on a bygone era but also look to the future and how surfing can change for the positive. Sit back and enjoy a fun conversation between two crusty surfers.

(Photo of Adrien Broner and Khabib Allakhverdiev by Stephanie Trapp/Showtime. Photo of Lucas Matthysse and Viktor Postol by Tom Hogan/Golden Boy Promotions.) On this edition of No Holds Barred, host Eddie Goldman once again spoke with lifelong martial artist, former UFC and Battlecade Extreme Fighting matchmaker, TV commentator, and our senior correspondent, John Perretti. We spoke with him by Skype Tuesday Japan time (Monday New York time). John Perretti's fighting career mainly focused on kickboxing, where he took "a lot of damage," and also included competition in karate and taekwondo, as well as rigorous training in grappling, judo, and wrestling, he said. This resulted in "16 verifiable concussions" and a few more "accidental" ones along the way. After he had retired as an active fighter but still was training and coaching, at about the age of 40 he started having cognitive problems. He illustrated what this meant for him: "For myself, that was the real beginning of not knowing where I was, even though I was probably 50-60 feet down a driveway in the Hampton Bays, and getting lost, I mean physically lost, and having to pull the car over and not know where I was for an hour or two." As time went on, he said, having scar tissue on the brain and other brain injuries made him susceptible to other diseases. And he knows many fighters and ex-fighters with similar problems. What upsets him to no end today is seeing parents encourage and even steer their children into training and competing in sports where inflicting head trauma resulting in brain injuries is common and often legal within the sport's rules. "Parents have to take responsibility," he argued, when it comes to having their children participate in sports like rugby, American football, boxing, and MMA. We discussed how many parents are attached to a "macho" culture which ignores health and safety, why he recommends only sports which are "low impact" and have a relatively low chance of head trauma, how even non-contact sports today are becoming "really physical," and much, much more.
