Welcome to a very special episode of Backstage Pass. We recently attended the National Alliance for Musical Theatre's 37th Annual Festival of New Musicals in New York City, and have created a podcast experience that will make you feel like you're right there with us! Each year, the NAMT festival shares 45 minute preview performances of 8 new musicals in development. This episode features conversations with NAMT's New Works Director Frankie Dailey, and 4 of the 8 shows in this year's festival: FINN by Chris Nee, Chris Dimond, & Michael Kooman, Love is Dead by Brett Ryback and Jeff Lupino-Esposito, Soft Magical Tofu Boy(s) by Kevin Wong and Particle by Selda Sahin, Autumn Reeser and Derek Gregor. Tune in next week to hear the other 4 shows! We also share demo recordings of a song from each of these musicals so you can get a taste of the music from each show. From FINN you'll hear “Sparkle and Shine” performed by Zachary Noah Piser. From Love is Dead you'll hear “Fully Formed” performed by Lana McKissack. From Soft Magical Tofu Boy(s), you'll hear the song “Invincible” performed by Jonathan Tan. And from Particle you'll hear "Meet Your Heroes" sung by Gabe Violett. We also interviewed Sonya Hayden and Matthew Lowy who were featured in NAMT's College Road Trip program, which shines a spotlight on university theatre programs that develop new musicals. Their musical, Taking Off! was recently developed at Michigan State University and an excerpt of the show was performed at the Festival of New Musicals. You can hear their song, “Ready for the World” at the end of the episode performed by Sonya Hayden. Check out Part 2 next week to hear interviews with the other NAMT writers, as well as more bonus content from musical theatre creators who were present at the festival. In this episode of “Half Hour,” we take a sharper look at the new Broadway musical The Queen of Versailles at the St. James Theatre, tracing Jackie and David Siegel's rise, their unfinished Orlando mega-mansion, and the show's transformation of Lauren Greenfield's documentary into a full-scale musical. We dig into Stephen Schwartz's score, Lindsey Ferrentino's book, and Michael Arden's staging, asking how the music, design, and performances serve the story's ideas about wealth, ambition, and collapse, with particular focus on sound design, vocal clarity, and the tension between flashy visuals and what the audience actually hears. We also examine Kristin Chenoweth's performance as Jackie, the ensemble around her, and the design team's scenic, lighting, and costume choices, before turning to how The Queen of Versailles may factor into this season's Tony Awards races and where it sits among the year's other large new musicals. Perfect WorldRichard Winzeler - Composer & Co-LyricistAlan Edmunds - Librettist & Co-LyricistPerfect World began innocently as a research project to document and analyze the incredible writings of Barbara Follett. As a professional psychologist, Alan had been curious about precocious child writers for more than a decade. Children who write like adults are incredibly rare and Barbara's prolific work certainly fit the bill. Being an avid musical theatre fan and performer, he instinctively envisioned Barbara's compelling life story as a musical and the archives at Columbia University were a treasure trove of detail. The initial book and lyrics evolved over a few years and two table readings were held. Richard joined the project as composer/co-lyricist, the score was created, and the journey to hone and refine this original musical theater piece began. The third table reading included demo recordings of all songs. The participants' positive and inspiring feedback has led to more refinement and an upcoming staged reading. They say you never write a musical, you simply rewrite it until it works. The creative process continues.

Dolly Parton BioSnap a weekly updated Biography.Dolly Parton's week has been nothing short of headline-making. According to Parade, she dazzled audiences at the opening of Dolly: A True Original Musical at Nashville's Fisher Center, a theatrical biography featuring new and classic songs. Dolly herself cowrote the book, and the stage adaptation stars three actresses portraying her at different stages of life, generating enthusiastic reviews. On Instagram, Dolly proudly showcased opening night highlights and ticket info, using the platform to connect directly with her fans. American Songwriter added that she wanted the musical staged while she's still alive and involved, a philosophy that feels pure Dolly—living legend advancing her legacy in real-time.Business-wise, Dolly is in expansion mode yet again. IMDB and Country Music Alley report she's branching into another yet-to-be-public business venture, with continued revenue power stemming from her unrivaled catalog of over 3,000 songs—valued at around $150 million—and her entertainment, amusement park, and philanthropic endeavors. FreeJobAlert pegged her net worth at $650 million this year, making clear she's more a cultural institution than mere celebrity. Much of this wealth cycles back into charity, particularly the Imagination Library and community scholarships, re-enforcing her “do good with what you've got” ethos.Major on-screen appearances are brewing: The Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra announced a visually ambitious Pops Series dedicated to Dolly's career, running September 19–20. Though Dolly will appear only virtually, the concerts feature hits like Jolene and I Will Always Love You, interwoven with personal stories and archived footage. In a statement, Dolly called the show “threads of my life woven together,” highlighting the significance of sharing her journey through orchestral arrangement. On the Broadway front, Dolly's Smoky Mountain Christmas Carol will tour again this season according to The Carson Center, with performances scheduled through November. Her classic narrative of redemption set in Depression-era Tennessee remains a perennial crowd-pleaser, and group ticket sales are already strong.Social media was abuzz when Dolly performed Jesus and Gravity at The O2 Arena, drawing excitement among British fans via accounts like PartonNews. Meanwhile, AOL reports Dolly's long-awaited Las Vegas residency has tickets flying, marking her first resident show in decades and sparking a flurry of fan anticipation. As for speculation, details on her rumored new business project remain tightly guarded amid a swirl of online chatter, but outlets like IMDB and Country Music Alley hint at a significant, possibly industry-shifting reveal in the coming months. For now, everything else is fully verified—Dolly Parton continues to thread herself more intimately into America's cultural and musical fabric by the day.Get the best deals https://amzn.to/3ODvOta

Echolocation is a road trip musical in the dark. A teenage love story without a map. Echolocation is a musical performed in pitch blackness.Ethan and Sadie are best friends, but they have little else in common. He's serious, she's goofy. He works after-school jobs, she has a rooftop hot tub. He's sighted, and she's completely blind. One thing they share is that they're totally sick of life in safe, suburban Las Vegas. And so, to enjoy a last gasp of freedom before their SAT scores come back, they lie to their parents and set off on a secret road trip up to Yellowstone National Park – going on some unexpected misadventures along the way. Featuring skinny-dipping, wacky science, an environmentalist twist and a fizzing score, Echolocation is a podcast musical about Gen Z friendship, love, and disability. Eliza Randall is a composer, pianist, and music director from Boulder City, NV, currently based in New York City. She began playing the piano and composing music when she was six years old and has been hooked ever since! Her short musical THE YELLOW WALLPAPER, written with Sam Norman, was a finalist for the Mazumdar Short Play Prize and has been performed all over the country by Harp Theatricals, Irvington Theatre, Alleyway Theatre, and Blank Conversations. Eliza's various other stand-alone compositions have been showcased at the Broadway Future Songbook at Lincoln Center, the Rattlestick Playwrights Theatre off-Broadway, and the Hackney Empire (nominated for the 2021 Stiles and Drewe Best New Song Prize). As a music director, Eliza especially loves directing new works, and most recently she has been MD/Keys 1 for multiple shows at Pace University, NYU's New Studio on Broadway, Dixon Place, the Scranton Fringe, and the Two Rivers Theatre with Joe Iconis and Sara Schlesinger. Education: BM in Piano Performance from BYU, MFA in Musical Theatre Writing from NYU Tisch.Hi, I'm Sam — an award-winning (but more often award-losing) rhymester who bounces between the UK and US.I mostly write lyrics and libretti for musicals and operas.
