‘Nun the Wiser' is an irreverent new musical from the mind of Kat Carson. It is a satirical look at an imagined past where Italian nuns sing gospel music and dream of fame. It focusses on the lives of seven musical nuns. On the surface, they appear devout and ordinary, but beneath that exterior lies a world of interpersonal relationships, conflicts, love, and repressed emotion. Within the convent, the only permitted form of artistic expression is composing and performing religious music.Their lives are thrown into turmoil when the famous composer Antonio Vivaldi comes to hear their compositions. As a man, he has the power to change their lives and introduce their music to the outside world. The nuns ask Mr. Vivaldi to review their own works, but what will he make of their explicit writings about love and desire?Drawing on her extensive work on the music of the 17th and 18th centuries, and on her experiences in an all female education system, Kat has used the genre of musical theatre to examine LGBTQIA issues and to draw a picture of womanhood that is both funny and challenging. The nuns in the story are people first and foremost, and have their own dreams, lives, and troubles. The musical explores issues of sexual identity, living within a patriarchal society, and a love of music through the absurd lens of nuns in an 18th century convent.Website

Welcome to Part 2 of our special coverage of the National Alliance for Musical Theatre's 37th Annual Festival of New Musicals. Each year, the NAMT festival shares 45 minute preview performances of 8 new musicals in development. Part 2 of our NAMT coverage features conversations with the writers of 4 of the 8 shows in this year's festival: The King of Harlem by John-Michael Lyles and David Gomez, Roja by Jaime Lozano and Tommy Newman, Wakeman by Jenn Grinels, and Alice Bliss by Karen Hartman, Jenny Giering, and Adam Gwon. We also share demo recordings of a song from each of these musicals so you can get a taste of the sound of each show. From The King of Harlem you'll hear “Federico” performed by John-Michael Lyles on vocals and guitar.  From Roja you'll hear, “I Will See You Again (Te Veré Otra Vez)” with music and lyrics by Jaime Lozano and Tommy Newman, featuring Mayelah Barrera. This recording is from the album “Jaime Lozano & The Familia: Songs by an Immigrant Vol. 3” released by Concord Theatricals Recordings.  From Wakemen, you'll hear “The Trio Song” performed by Jenn Grinels, Ari Notartomaso, and Beverly Anderson.  And from Alice Bliss, you'll hear “Prologue/One More” performed by Jenny Giering. One of the most exciting parts of NAMT is that it serves as a hub for musical theatre writers and producers.  While we were there, we also ran into and interviewed S. Todd Townsend and Kim Kibly, two of three writers of the musical Big Quarterly. Big Quarterly was a NAMT Recommended Musical. While it was not among the eight musicals selected for the festival, the panelists who reviewed the NAMT submissions were so struck by the work that they published a list of shows they feel should be shared with the musical theatre community. Big Quarterly was on that list. Big Quarterly was developed at Berklee NYC in the Writing and Production for Musical Theatre program, and we also interviewed Dan Marshall, an associate professor who helped develop the show. After that interview, you'll hear the song “Opening” from Big Quarterly. And finally, we ran into friends of the pod Harrison Bryan and Brandon Zellman, co-creators of Balls: The Monster Catchin' Musical. After their interview, we've included an excerpt of the song “What the World Should Be”, that features the show's villain, Warlordturtle, performed by Harrison Bryan. In this episode of “Half Hour,” we take a sharper look at the new Broadway musical The Queen of Versailles at the St. James Theatre, tracing Jackie and David Siegel's rise, their unfinished Orlando mega-mansion, and the show's transformation of Lauren Greenfield's documentary into a full-scale musical. We dig into Stephen Schwartz's score, Lindsey Ferrentino's book, and Michael Arden's staging, asking how the music, design, and performances serve the story's ideas about wealth, ambition, and collapse, with particular focus on sound design, vocal clarity, and the tension between flashy visuals and what the audience actually hears. We also examine Kristin Chenoweth's performance as Jackie, the ensemble around her, and the design team's scenic, lighting, and costume choices, before turning to how The Queen of Versailles may factor into this season's Tony Awards races and where it sits among the year's other large new musicals. Ozzy the Aussie Battler flicks his cape and steps into the ring, and the crowd go troppo. This is Dubbo Championship Wrestling, the hilarious new Aussie rock musical that will change everything you thought you knew about professional wrestling, regional Australia, and musical theatre itself.Rose, a young woman from Dub-Vegas with wrestling in her blood, has long ago turned her back on the family business and Dubbo's stifling small-town ways. When circumstance brings her back to her hometown on the eve of Dubbomania, the biggest wrestling tournament of the year, Rose is drawn into a monumental battle over family and identity, featuring capes, choreography, and some of the most colourful characters you'll ever meet. The violence, the joy, the costumes, the thumbtacks. Will there be blood? We bloody hope so.

fuzzy a New MusicalJeff Talbott - Book & LyricsWill Van Dyke - Music & Lyricsfuzzy is the story of a furry little monster (named Fuzzy) who has come home to take care of their currently-ailing mother (named Muzzy). fuzzy is also the story of a storyteller we'll call The Human, who has come to a theatre to tell the story of a furry little monster who . . .you get the gist. A teeny tiny musical (with puppets! lots and lots of puppets!) about great big things, fuzzy is mostly a story about stories themselves – why we tell them, how we tell them and what happens to a group of people listening when we do.

The Fitzgeralds of St. PaulBook, Music and Lyrics by Christie BaugherThe Fitzgeralds of St. Paul is a two-person, one act full-length chamber musical about F. Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald, celebrated literary figures of the Jazz Age. Part memory play, part gin-soaked vaudeville, The Fitzgeralds of St. Paul is a fictionalized, hyper-theatrical imagining of an infamous marriage – an evening in which two tragic, larger-than-life icons of a bygone era finally get to tell their story.

Perfect WorldRichard Winzeler - Composer & Co-LyricistAlan Edmunds - Librettist & Co-LyricistPerfect World began innocently as a research project to document and analyze the incredible writings of Barbara Follett. As a professional psychologist, Alan had been curious about precocious child writers for more than a decade. Children who write like adults are incredibly rare and Barbara's prolific work certainly fit the bill. Being an avid musical theatre fan and performer, he instinctively envisioned Barbara's compelling life story as a musical and the archives at Columbia University were a treasure trove of detail. The initial book and lyrics evolved over a few years and two table readings were held. Richard joined the project as composer/co-lyricist, the score was created, and the journey to hone and refine this original musical theater piece began. The third table reading included demo recordings of all songs. The participants' positive and inspiring feedback has led to more refinement and an upcoming staged reading. They say you never write a musical, you simply rewrite it until it works. The creative process continues.

Goin' HollywoodMusic by David KraneBook & Lyrics by Stephen ColeIt's Alice's birthday, and Garson, her musical writing partner and sometimes lover, takes her to lunch at the trendiest restaurant in Grand Central Station, The Super Chief Dining Car. The restaurant is a perfect replica of the Super Chief Dining car of the train that took everyone out to Hollywood back in the Golden Age.  Alice and Garson have always had one wish, to live back when movie musicals and MGM was at its hottest, and when Alice blows out her candles and makes her wish, the Super Chief Dining Car starts to move on a track, taking them cross country and back to Hollywood in 1949.They are told by the conductor that their ticket is good for one year.Once there, they get jobs at MGM, and find out that every era has its dangers and pitfalls as they encounter the decline of the studio system, sexism, anti-semitism, homophobia, and the Blacklist.L.B. Mayer has them investigated and finds that they have no identity (as they're from the future) and thinks they're Commie spies.Their year is up and they hot-foot it back home to their own time with a new understanding of who they are and where they are meant to be and that there is no time like the present.
