In episode 291, I had the privilege of sitting down with Dr. Jade Teta, a naturopathic physician, fitness expert, and author, to dive deep into the transformative power of choice. We talk about how the choices we make – consciously or unconsciously – shape our lives, relationships, and even our growth. Key Insights: Awareness is the First Step: Jade highlights how understanding our past patterns and unconscious decisions is the starting point for true empowerment. When we recognize the unconscious stories that shape us, we can take control of our narrative. Emotional Guidance with AFRAID: Jade introduced the AFRAID acronym – Anger, Frustration, Resistance, Anxiety, Insecurity, and Depression. These emotions, often tied to our unconscious stories, can dictate our decisions. The trick? Feel them fully, but don't let them run the show. Choosing Growth Over Comfort: We often choose comfort over change, but Jade reminds us that growth comes when we step into discomfort. If we keep choosing the same old path, we stay stuck in negative patterns. But when we embrace discomfort, that's when the magic happens. Relationship Growth: Jade and I talk about how relationships can either elevate or hold us back. Sometimes, we have to make a choice: reframe and redefine the relationship for mutual growth, or let go for both to flourish. Either way, it's about growing. Radical Accountability: Jade emphasizes the importance of taking responsibility for our actions, emotions, and perceptions. He introduces the concept of radical accountability—owning it all. Setting healthy boundaries and recognizing that no one is responsible for our feelings but us is key to growth. Rethinking Romance: We explore the traditional "you complete me" narrative and propose a shift to "you grow me." Relationships should be about mutual growth, not completion. This shift can create more depth and connection in your partnerships. Living Authentically: Jade shares his views on the four major human drives: Power, Popularity, Pleasure, and Purpose. He encourages us to be true to our next-level selves and not fall into the trap of societal expectations. It's all about authenticity. Proactive Engagement with Life: Instead of accepting that “everything happens for a reason,” Jade urges us to actively create meaning and purpose in our lives. We are the creators of our own journey, and it's time to own that responsibility. Resources and Connections: Jade Teta's Work: Dive deeper into Jade's approach with his Next Level Human coaching and certification programs at nextlevelhuman.com. Recommended Reading: Jade's latest book is packed with even more insights into creating a purposeful life and stepping into your next-level self. Click here to access. Final Thoughts: I'm so grateful for Jade's wisdom in this episode. It's a powerful reminder that we have the ability to choose our path and take control of our own growth. Whether it's in relationships, career, or personal development, we have the power to create change. Take responsibility for your choices, recognize your emotional patterns, and step into continuous growth. Tune in to this episode for a profound conversation that'll leave you feeling empowered and ready to make the next move on your path.

Someone once described me as a mix of jock, science nerd, nature boy & philosopher. It makes sense, I suppose.I was a personal trainer for 25 years. I still produce video-based workouts that are used by hundreds of thousands worldwide. It's kind of crazy to think about that number. I have been lucky to find a publisher who can produce and market great products.I have a biochemistry degree and am a practitioner of naturopathic medicine. Although, my friends give me a hard time for never referring to myself as "Doctor." I always found it too formal, but I have grown past the need for accolades. Depending on who you ask, some don't consider me a physician. Given my specialty in natural medicine, I have been called everything from "quack" to "witch doctor." Believe it or not, I take that as a compliment. The choice to go into alternative medicine was conscious and deliberate. My medical specialty is naturopathic medicine, a subset of medicine. Think of your family doctor, but instead of using drugs and surgery first and knowing little to nothing about diet and exercise, I use drugs second, and I am an expert in nutrition, exercise, and supplements. My specialty is "integrative endocrinology." It's the study of hormones & metabolism. The integrative part means that I integrate both conventional and alternative methods. Most of my career has been helping the most difficult metabolic cases lose weight.I have a license in California & Washington State and can prescribe all drugs except Schedule I & II. I am not opposed to pharmaceuticals and do use them; I prefer to lean on lifestyle change and natural approaches first. I only prescribe drugs if necessary. There is a time and a place for both.I am also a psychology geek and student of philosophy (my favorites are stoicism and Taoism). I am currently working on my PhD in transpersonal and integral psychology. My area of research is focused on human connection, meaning, and fulfillment. What else can I tell you? I have more life coaching certifications than I can count, and I did extra shifts in couples counseling in school (I am fascinated by romance and read research on the topic regularly). I also went through an affair and a divorce. I betrayed (my wife) and was betrayed (by the person I fell in love with). It was the best and worst experience of my life. Have you ever had an experience where you were so hurt, disappointed, and embarrassed by your behavior that you hit rock bottom and became a new person? Yeah, that's what happened to me. This is why I write, blog, and podcast on relationships and romance.I feel I have learned and earned this expertise. I have both the intellectual knowledge and first-hand experience of loss from both sides.I am a voracious reader of anything related to self-development. My two favorite things are working out and reading. Some people like beers and ballgames, which are great, but I prefer books and barbells. Finally, I am an author. In my field of medicine, we have a principle called Docere. It means "doctor as teacher." That's what I spend most of my time doing now: teaching through writing. I write books and create online educational products on metabolism, fitness, and personal development. I teach in three distinct areas: "mind, muscle, and metabolism." For the 3rd time joining me on the show is Dr Jade Teta. I can tell you all of Jade's ‘technical' and ‘medical' qualifications, being a physician, having written 5 books on health and metabolism; his having written chapters for naturopath medicine text books, but what I think is more important is that Jade is an evolver and upleveller; He's a philosopher, he's passionate about transpersonal psychology and is currently doing a PhD in this space. Today we're inviting you to uplevel your thinking and use pain as purpose, with us by exploring the following: Transpersonal psychology is what you've now turned your hand to, currently on the PhD journey… what is tpp? Pain as a path to purpose - how has this shown up for you at various times in your life, Jade? Why is self-betrayal the worst kind? Physical injury and mental pain are more similar than we give them credit - can you help us make the link?Hurt as a way to help - I love this one because it helps us shift from victim to victor by helping others, a favourite Next Level Human example of mine, to use your terminology… Let's Fake it Till you make it - Please don't, you say: SO what do we do instead when we want to be in the room where it's happening but we don't feel we deserve to be there… Being it until you see it! A lot of the things that happen in our lives that we feel are ‘bad' or ‘wrong' like relationships ending, someone passing away, losing a job feel like endings but let's talk about them as beginnings and how the story we tell ourselves about these stories paves the way for whether they might result in being a positive force for our lives… How can we start to unpack our stories written in the subconscious? Why do stories we tell ourselves, that are unhelpful, and we sometimes even KNOW they're unhelpful, seem so hard to dismantle? It's a thought provoking show that I hope will help you in your life. When tragedy hits many automatically revert back to their culture-level instincts immediately taking sides and picking a team. While this is an understandable reaction, it is also the worst thing one can do. It's this behavior that often inspires, cultivates and emboldens the base level human elements of society. In this podcast Dr Jade argues that the only way to combat hate and hurt is to root it out, integrate it, and transcend it within ourselves first. When we do that successfully we stay true to our Next Level Human nature and become a positive example and standard for others to follow. While we can't stop tragedies from happening, we can stand as personal beacon of light on how to respond. This episode makes the argument tha dualistic binary thinking, a destructive habit of the culture level is the seed of all division and hate in the first place. Two things can be true. We can support and uphold the rights, dignity, and freedoms of all innocent people while also not tolerating the base level destructive elements that reside on both sides. When we insist on choosing sides we are violating the integrative, holistic and inclusive aspects of the very source we derive from. We must understand that change may not end with us, but it can begin with us. Prepare to challenge your usual thinking patterns and embrace a mindset that moves beyond duality and binary perspectives. This episode of the Next Level Human podcast promises to introduce you to the concept of non-dualistic thinking, a philosophy grounded in the Taoist belief of viewing the world not in opposites, but as an interconnected web of relationships. Dr. Jade unpacks the limitations of dualistic thinking and the dysfunction it can create, offering intriguing insights that could help us navigate a more peaceful and connected existence. Dr. Jade will take you deep into understanding the philosophy of non-duality, where the world isn't constrained by rights and wrongs, hots and colds, but rather sees relationships between entities. So, are you trapped in a binary, dualistic world, quick to judge and slow to understand? This episode encourages you to break free from these shackles and venture into a new realm of nuanced, non-binary thinking. A realm that doesn't shy away from differences, but embraces them. As we go about our lives, navigating the complexities and challenges, we often overlook or underestimate the profound impact that our past, especially our childhood, has on our health and overall wellbeing. Our guest, Justin Janosca, a renowned expert in the field, brings to light the concept of a 'psychic wound' - a biological scar from our past that affects our present in ways we often don't fully comprehend. Drawing from his own experiences and extensive research, Justin guides us through this riveting journey into the realm of childhood development and the often-ignored facets of trauma. Childhood trauma is not merely a memory, it is a living part of us that molds our nervous system, hormones, and, in turn, our immune system. Justin helps us understand the differences between trauma experienced early on and later in life, and the influence of a child's environment on their development. He takes us through the stages of development we go through as children and the impact this has on our brains and nervous systems, explaining how trauma can overstimulate or under-stimulate our hypothalamus, pituitary, and adrenal axis, putting us perpetually in a fight-flight-freeze mode. But, through it all, as Justin reiterates, healing is possible. The key lies in self-regulation, compassion, and the right therapies to address our 'psychic wounds'. With his expert insights, he elucidates the power of nurturing relaxation, gratitude, love, and compassion, alongside the efficacy of solution-focused therapy. He firmly believes in turning pain into purpose, and guides us to tap into our inner strength to find direction and meaning. With a deeper understanding of the intersections between childhood trauma, autoimmune conditions, and healing, this episode promises to be an enlightening exploratory journey for everyone. Today, Dr. Jade discusses the importance of protein intake for weight loss. Not only is protein fundamental to maintaining muscle mass while losing weight, but it is also one of the most fulfilling food sources, which helps with satiation, hunger control, and, consequently, calorie reduction. There is a lot of debate on whether calorie reduction is the only way to achieve sustainable weight loss. According to research, reducing calories appears to be the foundation for any weight loss process. It all comes down to calorie reduction, and all diets work because they limit calories - in one way or another. There is also an interesting aspect of this matter which is what is called “protein pacing”. Protein pacing has become a popular concept and consists of spreading protein intake amongst the meals throughout the day. Despite not being too convenient, it is extremely helpful for those wanting to lose fat and change their body composition. Tune in to learn more! In this episode, Dr. Jade talks about the idea of becoming your future self in the best way possible. From a young age, we are filled with seed stories. Seed stories are combinations of experiences, lessons, traumas, and emotions we had as kids. You want your future self to unwind these stories that your child and teenage versions wrote, so you can stop the same patterns and the same struggles and become a better adult. When it comes to your future self, you should start creating this new version now. We don't know our future versions yet, but the earlier we start building them, the earlier we will get to know them. That is why the present moment (our creative moment) is the most crucial time. There is no past and no future: the emotional and cognitive characteristics we want to have in the short term are created in the next second. Check out the Next Level Human sponsors! In this episode of Next Level Human Podcast, Dr. Jade teams up with Ali Gilbert to talk all things men and masculinity. Modern men are going through certain changes: research shows that testosterone levels have decreased for the last 20 years. On the other hand, research also shows that the average penis size has been increasing. What is the correlation there? What is the connection between these two statistics? In addition, Dr. Jade and Ali talk about the importance of men letting their feminine side show, being open and sensitive, and being vulnerable. These traits are the ones found in next-level men. How do men access their feminine side (and vice-versa)? How do men and women understand each other? These are all questions debated in this episode. In this episode of Next Level Human Podcast, Dr. Jade welcomes Dr. Mike T. Nelson to discuss all the details of human performance and how metabolism works during weight loss. Dr. Mike is a Human Performance Specialist and Fitness and Nutrition Educator, and understanding these nuances has been one of his projects throughout his 18-year career. In order to look better and perform better, it's crucial to understand the role that calories and macronutrients (protein, carbohydrate, and fats) play in our bodies. Balancing the three is the key to achieving a weight loss goal. Although the equation “calories in vs. calories out” is the foundation for changing body composition, there is more to it. A fast metabolism is ideal for someone looking to lose weight, while a slow metabolism helps with muscle gain and strength. A flexible metabolism, however, is a proven way to master body composition. Dr. Jade and Dr. Mike also discuss training, different diets, and the most recent research on this topic. Check out the Next Level Human sponsors! In this episode of Next Level Human, Dr. Jade connects with Brendan Vermeire. Brendan is a Mental and Metabolic Health Scientist & Researcher and CEO at Metabolic Solutions LLC. They discuss how the root causes of neuroinflammation are deeply connected with trauma, stress, and mental illness. Most people don't know that childhood adversities, for example, can influence and impact the nervous system. Brendan explains that his line of work and the foundation of his company's work is a mix of psychology and physiology. He highlights that once we understand trauma and start learning from it, we start rewiring the brain - which is called neuroplasticity - and helping the nervous system as a whole. Brendan also talks about metabolic health, holistic health, and the different treatments for neuroinflammation. Check out the Next Level Human sponsors! In this episode, Dr. Jade covers the basics of rest-based training. This type of training is slightly different from CrossFit and significantly different from strength training. It allows for the person to rest as much as needed and to come back to the exercise with more energy, performing the sets and reps with more intensity. The basic concept of this type of training is “more rest, more power”. Focusing on rest allows the exerciser to have a customized workout based on their fitness level. It also allows the muscle to recover properly. During a longer rest period, the tissue has more time to heal and grow. In addition, for some people, rest-based training can be a good option because it usually doesn't last too long. Tune in to learn more about this topic and how you can implement it into your routine! In this episode of Next Level Human Podcast, Dr. Jade explains the idea of “easy is earned”. For example, when we are learning something new and different like driving, cooking, or swimming we tend to find the thing very difficult. We struggle a little bit, and that's understandable. However, as we get good at the activity (progress), we start to find it really easy. Why is that? Because easiness only comes with effort; it is earned. We can also apply this concept when it comes to overcoming fears and traumas. If you are afraid of heights, airplanes, or the sea, for example, and you want to overcome this fear, you have the chance to practice the habit of overcoming it. It's going to be uncomfortable in the beginning, but it will feel painless eventually. That also means that you “earned” the right not to feel afraid. Check out the Next Level Human sponsors! In today's episode, Dr. Jade welcomes Dr. Julie Foucher. They discuss the many benefits of functional medicine, the differences between conventional medicine and functional medicine, and what people can expect by treating symptoms with this modern and more integrative approach. Dr. Julie explains that functional medicine aims for restoring balance in the body by addressing the root cause of the symptoms. This approach and the treatment are based on lifestyle changes. The diagnosis itself is also based on asking the patients more about their daily lives. Dr. Julie also talks about nutrition (and how it is a key aspect when it comes to changing body composition), supplements, and the importance of a healthy diet. Tips for weight loss, for example, include resistance training, protein intake, and tracking macronutrients. Tune in! Check out the Next Level Human sponsors! In this episode of Next Level Human Podcast, Dr. Jade discusses the concept of “be it until you see it”. In opposition to “fake it until you make it” when we start “being it” there is a great chance we will succeed at our goals. We will start being this new person we want to be. The concept of “fake it” on the other hand doesn't work because the mind knows that we are trying to play some kind of trick on it. This particular topic of the current self-development discussion also involves the things that happened to us in our lives up until this point; we can call them our “seed stories”. These seed stories will have a major role in the way we think, feel, and act. And, at the end of the day, the ways we think, feel, and act – if aligned – can transform us into this new person. Only by understating this idea in depth, we can achieve a future state. Check out the Next Level Human sponsors! In this episode of Next Level Human Podcast, Dr. Jade and Emily Gough discuss the many nuances of male (and female) insecurity, the different aspects of sexual encounters, the singular connections between men and women when it comes to sex, and how people should view sex as an exploratory process instead of something unemotional and mechanical. Each person is unique and everyone has a particular set of wants and needs, both outside and inside the bedroom. A sexual experience can be the perfect opportunity to explore this. However, these experiences can also make insecurities more apparent – which is normal. Talking to your partner, understanding where these insecurities are coming from, and looking at the whole thing from different angles are the key steps to making a pleasurable situation even more pleasurable.
