In this episode of Next Level Human Podcast, Dr. Jade welcomes Dr. Mike T. Nelson to discuss all the details of human performance and how metabolism works during weight loss. Dr. Mike is a Human Performance Specialist and Fitness and Nutrition Educator, and understanding these nuances has been one of his projects throughout his 18-year career. In order to look better and perform better, it's crucial to understand the role that calories and macronutrients (protein, carbohydrate, and fats) play in our bodies. Balancing the three is the key to achieving a weight loss goal. Although the equation “calories in vs. calories out” is the foundation for changing body composition, there is more to it. A fast metabolism is ideal for someone looking to lose weight, while a slow metabolism helps with muscle gain and strength. A flexible metabolism, however, is a proven way to master body composition. It's a week into the new year, and we all know what that means… a lot of people are trying to hang on and follow through with their big dreams, goals, and resolutions for the new year. Interestingly, many of those resolutions involve getting in better shape or becoming more physically fit or healthy. I've already heard several resolutions this year that sound something like, “I want to work out more, I want to eat better, I want to run a marathon or do a Spartan Race, I want to get a 6-pack, or I want to lose this much weight.” However, the statistics have revealed that 90% of people who make New Years resolutions will fail, noting that 50% of those resolution makers will fail by the end of January. So what's the secret? What's the strategy to maintaining your goals throughout this entire year? One word: DISCIPLINE. Therefore, to speak on the topic of discipline, I have invited one of the most disciplined people I have ever met to join us on the show this week. Joining us is a man who has over 16 years of coaching experience and currently serves as a Human Performance Specialist for the United States Army Special Operations Command, Coach Shelton Stevens. Prior to his position with our U.S. Military Coach Stevens worked with several Division I institutions as a strength and conditioning specialist. Additionally, he and his wife Macie have started 13 Bar Performance (http://13barperformance.com) where their goal is to provide elite performance programs for individuals who strive to reach their full maximal potential. Ultimately, in and throughout this week's episode, our hope is that you would be educated, equipped, and encouraged as to how you CAN make the daily choices to follow through with your goals ONE decision at a time. Remember, successful people do consistently what other people do occasionally. Let's Roll.

In her Strength coaching business ECFIT Erin has worked with beginners, to the worlds greatest elite athletes, including Olympians and World Champions Mirinda Carfrae and Timothy Odonnell, to name a few. Erin own's Rally Sport training facility and Health club in Boulder, which has become the meca for amatuer and pro triathletes around the world. Erin's content on the AnyQuestion platform is simply brilliant. Some of which we discuss in this episode. Timestamps 2:15 - Interview with Erin Carson begins 8:45 - Erin & Greg chat about Taylor Knibb and her rise from juinors to her current successes. How she has brought her skill in short course racing, through to her long course events. The harder the course, the more my athletes are going to thrive 15:43 - Greg & Erin rewind the clock and discuss her career beginning from the start. 20:31 - How did Erin adapt her strength training knowledge when she began working with endurance athletes. Erin's ability to incorporate 'play' in her training programs and get out of the training studio is a key to her sucess with athletes. My job is to make the athlete and their sport coach look really REALLY good! 26:02 - Have you ever considered being a full coach to pro athlete's? 27:54 - Athletes bring their challenges to Erin and her philosophy is to encompass herself and her athletes with a team of specialists so she can ensure a full strength training service. 30:03 - Erin explains her view about Lucy Charles-Barkly's injury recovery ... she shares 'the magic' ingredient. 32:12 - Erin describes where and how she is learning and growing as a strength training coach. The research tends to be based around male athletes, rather females. 'Experience' and 'listening' to the athlete can be more important than a research paper. There's never perfect ... there's just fast, and pain free 37:54 - Erin discusses how patience and committment to the process is a key as a strength training coach. She believes her job is not to fix things, rather she is trying to work within the brilliance of the body and allowing it to work. 39:36 - We have this mentality that 'tough is better'. Greg and Erin discuss how the flow of running where it's more of a dance than a battle of strength. 40:34 - How much of the strength training that Erin's involved with is about injury reduction, or is it about optimizing performance? 42:15 - So how much correspondence does Erin have with the sports coach so that she is adapting the strength training she allocates and does not 'crush' the athlete. Erin encourages her athletes to come straight to her from their training rathe than heading home and resting prior. Movement before Muscle 48:44 - Erin continues to learn and she shares her most interesting learning lately. The impact between the diaphram and pelvic floor through breathwork. It's amazing if you can just take a big breath and create space between the ribs and the hips, to free up the movement of the pelvis. How do we train the athlete to experience that when they are riding and running! 50:52 - Running tall is a key for Erin. She explains how the GOAT is a tall runner. 53:21 - Erin shares some training tips for us all to utlize no matter where you are in your training journey. 58:25 - What would you tell your 18 year old self? 58:46 - Who would you want to have a dinner with (non family, living or dead)? 59:51 - Where do you see yourself in 3 years? 1:02:38 - Check out the 200+ answer Erin has shared on the www.anyquestion.com app 1:05:13 - Interview concludes Links Be sure and check out bennettendurance.com Find Greg on social media: Twitter @GregBennett1 Instagram @GregBennettWorld And check out Erin Carson Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/ecfit_strength Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/ecfitstrength/ Website: https://rallysportboulder.com/ Rally Sport Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/rallysportboulder/ Rally Sport Twitter: https://twitter.com/rallysportco Rally Sport Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/rallysporthealthandfitness?fref=ts

What does transparency have to do with unlocking your best? EVERYTHING. In this week's Wednesday Recap, J.R. summarizes the three BIG nuggets of wisdom from his interview with Human Performance Specialist and the man behind New Zealand DOUBLING its Olympic medals, Dr. Matt Kritz. So if you want the cliffs notes version of Monday's episode, make sure to check out this week's Recap! [00:01 - 16:03] Dr. Matt's BIG Three #1: The fundamental characteristics that drive high performance People thrive when the stresses they experience are within their capability and capacity. MUST know WHO you are as an individual and, specifically what your capabilities and capacities are. IF not, the best program in the world won't work for you! Capabilities and capacities = Movement Mentality/thoughts on things like nutrition Where's your self-efficacy and self-mastery Mindset in general Energy Pursue MARGINAL gains (1-2% gains) #2: What to do when you're in the proverbial s*** or get off the pot moment You have to know yourself first… Who am I? What do I know I can deliver? What part of that satisfies what was asked of me? What areas do I have NO idea about (i.e. necessary development)? How do I prioritize that development? How do I be open and honest and transparent about that (i.e. not being delusional or hiding behind something you can't do)? PERSPECTIVE SHIFT: There's no such thing as strengths and weaknesses…it's more about CONTEXT #3: Mistake people are making with feedback and information they're getting They feel like they have to take it at face value and implement it right away because that's what they have to do to be successful [16:04 - 17:20] Wrapping Up! Make sure to listen to the full interview with Dr. Matt to get more of his wisdom and hear his BIG DOMINO Take action… Pick ONE of the three nuggets to work on COMMIT KEY QUOTES “COOKIE-CUTTER coaching doesn't work at the highest levels. There's a foundational component to human performance that's not being talked about enough. And it's preventing SO MANY people from unlocking their greatest capabilities and using their gifts and talents at the highest level possible. What about you? You feel like you have more in the tank? If so, you'll want to lean in hard today. Because Dr. Matt Kritz BROUGHT IT… Dr. Matt is a Human Performance Specialist and the man behind New Zealand DOUBLING their Olympic medals earned. He leans right into the KEY DRIVERS to high performance and what MUST happen for you to unlock your best. Matt is BEYOND impressive and he has a take on human performance that's going to relieve a lot of your stress about getting out your best. J.R. and Matt talk about things like: The fundamental characteristics that drive high performance What to do when you're in the proverbial “s*** or get off the pot” moment The mistake high achievers are making when they get feedback or information about how to achieve their goals And this is just a taste of what J.R. and Matt get into today. Matt is an absolute genius when it comes to human performance. [00:01 - 12:18] Introducing Dr. Matt to the Show Dr. Matt's most embarrassing moment and how he overcame it Developing a stronger sense of self-efficacy and self-mastery [12:19 - 26:42] The Fundamental Characteristics That Drive High Performance #1: People thrive when the stresses they experience are within their capability and capacity If we don't understand THIS, it doesn't matter what program we're in MUST know WHO you are as an individual and, specifically your capabilities and capacities. IF not, the best program in the world won't work for you! Your FOUNDATIONS of what you're doing must be set FIRST. You have to understand what YOU need relative to your capabilities and capacity, then make sure you can deliver that EVERY DAY. THEN, AND ONLY THEN, can you start looking at making GAINS… #2: Pursue MARGINAL gains (1-2% gains) NOTE: The BIG ROCKS should be addressed first if you're operating at UNDER-capacity [26:43 - 33:41] What To Do When You're In The Proverbial “S*** Or Get Off The Pot” Moment You have to know yourself first Who am I? What do I know I can deliver? What part of that satisfies what was asked of me? What areas do I have NO idea about (i.e. necessary development)? How do I prioritize that development? How do I be open and honest and transparent about that (i.e. not being delusional or hiding behind something you can't do)? Too many people are not raising their hand and saying, “I don't know. I'm not sure. I need clarity here.” If you choose to hide behind the unknown, that's called HOPE Performance vs. High Performance There's no such thing as strengths and weaknesses…it's more about CONTEXT. You have to be AWARE of your environment and what's expected of you and understanding what your natural drivers are and how'd they'd land in that particular moment and environment [33:42 - 37:50] Mistake People Are Making With Feedback And Information They're Getting They feel like they have to take it at face value and implement it right away because that's what they have to do to be successful If you have the expectation that it's the TOP or bust, you'll often miss things along the way, compromise people along the way, and often not be true to yourself along the way If what you're trying to achieve is NOT within your IDENTITY, you'll compromise [37:51 - 54:19] Extra Nuggets from Dr. Matt Matt's take on the BE YOU movement There's NEVER a balance between work and life. It's about how well you can integrate the two. How to be content with the 1-2% gain [54:20 - 55:57] Wrapping Up! Dr. Matt's BIG domino How to connect with Dr. Matt KEY QUOTES “High performance is transparent. Hope performance hides.” - Dr. Matt Kritz “There's no such thing as strengths and weaknesses. It's about being AWARE of your environment, what's expected of you, your natural drivers, and how those drivers will affect the particular moment and environment you're in.” - Dr. Matt Kritz “If what you're trying to achieve is NOT within your IDENTITY, you'll compromise. ” - Dr. Matt Kritz “There's NEVER a balance between work and life. I put theory into TEST to find out what works and what doesn't. The Bruce Lee quote “take whats useful and disregard the rest” is how I find movement truth. The ultimate truth is in the movement not the theory, it has to work in reality. Now Running/Gait mechanics and martial arts (especially boxing) is how I test truth in movement; theory is always put to the test! From my teenage years into my late 20s, I spent significant time within mainstream fitness practices such as Crossfit, powerlifting, Olympic lifting, gymnastics, and bodybuilding, not in that particular order. I have also spent time playing soccer, boxing, skiing amongst other sports. Having stacked many injuries in my teens/20s from improper training, I was led on a journey into chiropractic and sports injuries. I have worked with 1000s of injured patients in 8 years of chiropractic practice and have seen many injuries in the gym as a former Crossfit coach for 5 years. I've now spent 1,000's of hours learning and practicing systems such as Functional Range Conditioning, Weckmethod, and GOATA movement. GOATA has my interest at the moment, as I see it as a platform for a new Paradigm in movement. I believe we (Experts) are using incorrect maps of movement, therefore injuries are prevalent in sport and life. I will always test and retest in my own theories in real movement. Join me on my journey to change the movement game for the public and experts." --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/the-art-of-move/message
