In today's show, I have my friend Brendan Vermeire back on the show to unpack neuroinflammation and mental health more deeply from the last time he was on the show (show #277) - Brendan is the proud owner and founder of the Metabolic Solutions Institute for Functional Health and Fitness Practitioners and the creator of the Functional Mental Health Practitioner Certificate Course. He is also the founder of the Metabolic Solutions Research & Education Foundation, a not-for-profit foundation dedicated to ‘changing the way the world views mental health' through advancing the science of Mental Health Dysfunction. He is also the creator of The Mental M.A.P.™, a cutting-edge Lab Panel for Mental Health. I know you'll enjoy this explorative conversation around some of the trickier aspects of diagnosing, treating and healing in the mental health and neuro-inflammation space and you can head to the show notes for more, or these handy links below: Show notes: lowtoxlife.com/podcastInstagram: @lowtoxlife Instagram: @the_holistic_savageResources page on Brendan's websiteAnd the questions I asked along the way: Identifying and addressing physiological root causes can make facing psychological root causes, such as unresolved trauma, more manageable.Root cause investigation can be a trauma response - Let's unpack that. - Another one is "Are self limiting beliefs your root cause"?High Cortisol due to prolonged stress/trauma is linked to decreased brain volume - wow, can you talk us through that? Research suggested that inflammation can increase susceptibility to PTSD. And then you go on to say trauma itself may increase inflammation - so is it a case of 'which one came first?' in the individual?Mold and mycotox are a major etiological root cause for neurodegeneration/mental illness. And then a couple of philosophical questions... where is the line to dance between personal responsibility + a helping hand for optimal health?Who you are (label given say with a diagnosis) and how much of that can fluctuate/be worked on vs how much is really you in all your uniqueness? In this episode of Next Level Human, Dr. Jade connects with Brendan Vermeire. Brendan is a Mental and Metabolic Health Scientist & Researcher and CEO at Metabolic Solutions LLC. They discuss how the root causes of neuroinflammation are deeply connected with trauma, stress, and mental illness. Most people don't know that childhood adversities, for example, can influence and impact the nervous system. Brendan explains that his line of work and the foundation of his company's work is a mix of psychology and physiology. He highlights that once we understand trauma and start learning from it, we start rewiring the brain - which is called neuroplasticity - and helping the nervous system as a whole. Brendan also talks about metabolic health, holistic health, and the different treatments for neuroinflammation. Check out the Next Level Human sponsors! The Root Cause Medicine Podcast is created by Rupa Health, the best way to order, track & manage results from 30+ lab companies in one place for free. The Root Cause Medicine Podcast is a weekly one-on-one conversation with renowned medical experts, specialists, and pioneers who are influencing the way we look at our health and wellbeing. This week we're joined by Brendan Vermeire, Functional Medicine Consultant and Founder of Metabolic Solutions. In this episode, Brendan Vermeire talks about mental health, from depression, anxiety, and neuroinflammation to dementia and Alzheimer's. Brendan is a mental and metabolic health researcher, functional medicine educator, board-certified holistic practitioner, personal trainer, writer, speaker, and host of The Holistic Savage podcast. He is also the owner and founder of the Metabolic Solutions Institute for Functional Health and Fitness Practitioners and the Metabolic Solutions Research & Education Foundation, a not-for-profit foundation dedicated to "changing the way the world views mental health" through advancing the science of mental health dysfunction. Key Takeaways: Debunking the classic psychiatric narrative The current model of mental health treatment in the psychiatric world offers limited treatment options, such as pills or therapy, with little consideration for underlying causes of inflammation or other factors that could contribute to mental health issues. As a result, mental health practitioners like Brendan focus on studying more predominant theories, such as cytokine or neurotrophic ones. Inflammation and mental health symptoms Brendan represents inflammation as "the cleansing fire the immune system uses to fight off pathogens and remodel tissues." Inflammation can be driven by anything, including food, mold, viruses, or pathogens. Most people aren't aware of it, but the average American is inflamed at a low chronic meta-level, which drives the chronic disease epidemic, depression, anxiety, and other mental health issues. The role of neuroplasticity in mental health Neuroplasticity refers to the brain's ability to change and adapt in response to experiences and environmental factors. It is a crucial process that underlies learning, memory formation, and the recovery of function after brain injury. Interventions that promote neuroplasticity, such as cognitive-behavioral therapy, mindfulness-based practices, and physical exercise, effectively improve symptoms of depression, anxiety, and other mental health conditions, which may help to promote positive changes in brain structure and function. How does the microbiome affect mental health? Changes in the microbiome can affect our mental health. Multiple research suggests that the microbiome composition can impact the brain through various mechanisms, including neurotransmitter regulation, inflammation, and immune system modulation. Additionally, some studies have found that a diverse and healthy microbiome is associated with better mental health outcomes. The Mental M.A.P. The Mental M.A.P. (Microglial Activation Profile) is a sophisticated lab panel that assesses the likelihood of microglial activation and neuroinflammation by evaluating multiple serological blood, urine, and even stool markers, as well as other core functions like methylation and nutrient imbalances. Today, I am blessed to have here with me Practitioner, Founder, and Owner of Metabolic Solutions LLC, Brendan Dean Vermeire. Brendan has always been an extremely motivated individual and grew up active in martial arts and wrestling among dabbling in other activities. At a young age, he realized the importance of fitness and nutrition. Brendan felt empowered by the idea that he had control over his health and physique. Brendan enlisted in the United States Navy for the prestigious SEAL program. Unfortunately, his SEAL aspirations were cut short due to an inguinal hernia that led to a medical discharge. This episode originally aired on Friday June 4th 2021. Brendan transitioned into competitive bodybuilding and started personal training and nutrition coaching at the age of 19. When he started in the industry, he had the pleasure of working with experienced professionals with a vast array of backgrounds and education. Brendan was fortunate enough to gain exposure to many modalities and areas of science.Being an extremely motivated individual, that exposure has set him on a path to learning as much as he can to optimize human health, happiness, and performance. There is nothing more rewarding to me than being able to help individuals attain a level of wellness they never thought possible. In this episode, Brendan Vermeire talks all about mold and mold illness diagnosis. First, he dives into the importance of fungus for our planet and its role in our ecosystem. Then, Brendan explains how to know if you are living with mold in your home and what you can do when you discover mold in your environment. Later, Brendan reveals his personal story with mold illness. Finally, the conversation turns to EMF radiation and how you can protect yourself. Fungus has been on planet Earth a lot longer than humans have. How much fungal overgrowth do you have in your body? It can be a spectrum. Whereas mainstream doctors want you to believe that it's all or nothing. Here are some other questions you need to consider when thinking about mold illness: How many mycotoxins might be trapped in your tissues? How much mold exposure are you getting? How resilient is your body against mold? How robust are your detox systems and immune system? [11:50] How To Know If You Are Living With Mold Fungi feeds on carbohydrates and rotting material. Something you should consider is the role of fungi in the natural world. Fungi will break down dead carbon-based material to recycle nutrients back to the soil. Overall, it plays a very important role in our ecosystem. In fact, fungi seem to be a normal part of our gut microbiome. It trains our immune system and matures our immune system. Most people will find mold in their living environment. The US Environmental Protection Authority developed ERMI to provide a straightforward way to assess mold and indoor air quality investigations. Learn more about ERMI here: https://www.envirobiomics.com/product/ermi/ We have to think about the degree of mold exposure in the environment, the frequency, and the mold load. [20:25] What To Do If You Know You Have Mold In Your Home There's a very fine line between creating a problem where there isn't one versus identifying a healing opportunity where there is one. We are all exposed to a lot of bad things every single day. So, we can't make it sound like if you're at all exposed, you're going to be ill. The biggest thing you need to think about is if you have symptoms. However, if you're living in a compromised environment, it's probably just a matter of time before you do start developing symptoms. The first option is to remediate and reduce the fungal load to improve the home's air quality. Otherwise, it would be best if you moved out of your home. Check out @moldfinders on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/moldfinders [23:40] How Mold Played A Role In Brendan's Life Nobody cares about mold until they get really sick from it. One day, Brendan's fiancé at the time woke up with an unrelenting cramp. Eventually, she became emaciated. Brendan had fatigue, and it compounded his depressive tendencies. Unfortunately, Brendan's fiancé was the canary in the coal mine. Sadly, they ended up separating because it became such a toxic and volatile situation. Four years later, Brendan got the news that she had taken her own life. [34:30] EMFs Are Damaging The Body Humans are so disconnected from our innate intuition. The radiation that's being emitted from our electronic devices cannot be good for us. We need a lot more studies when it comes to EMFs and damaging our bodies. EMFs are already categorized as a probable carcinogen. We as a species, as a collective, are lacking tolerance to both mold and this radiation. [37:30] Reducing The Damage EMFs Can Have On Your Body The most important thing you can do is reduce the exposure. Turn off your wi-fi router at night. Put your phone on airplane mode. There's not a ton that you can do to reduce the exposure because it is everywhere. Instead, think about what you can control. [43:55] What Brendan Is Most Looking Forward To This Year Brendan is grateful to niche down in the mold world. Brendan is focusing on mental health and a functional medicine approach to mental health. Plus, Brendan is excited to start writing his book, and he is speaking at IMMH. On this episode of the Soaring Child Podcast, we had a very informative conversation with metabolic health scientist/functional medicine educator, Brendan Vermeire. Breandaon discusses his tumultuous journey dealing with ADHD. Two weeks after he was diagnosed with a major depressive disorder and ADHD at the age of 21, Brendan overdosed. The diagnosis for these mental disabilities was supposed to help him, but instead, almost made him take his own life. It's no wonder that suicide is the 10th leading cause of death for Americans. Brendan withstood a lot at a young age and to add to his problems, he was in a toxic relationship. But it was in this relationship where he began to try to figure out his partner's mental instabilities that he was introduced to the world of functional medicine. He became obsessed with health, specifically the dangers of oxidative stress and inflammation in the body. Brendan knows exactly how over-diagnosed mental disorders have become. We have become so fixated on what's wrong with our child instead of becoming fixated on what's wrong with the environment. By simply cutting out fake foods from your child's diet, living in a cleaner, mold-free space, and other fundamental changes, you can save money, as well as improve your child's peace of mind. Tune in, listen, and learn about the importance of metabolic and mental health! Takeaways: [3:00] Reasons why Brendan became a health scientist [7:07] Brendan's steps after mental institution [11:03] What really causes ADHD [13:09] The importance of knowing your biochemistry [16:59] Contributing factors to oxidative stress and inflammation [19:20] Optimizing the gut-brain connection [28:21] Breaking the ADHD diagnosis and medication stigma Memorable quotes: “What we're doing with mental health and psychology is so butchered.” “Then I was actually officially diagnosed with Major Depressive Disorder and ADHD at the age of 21, and it was actually like two weeks later that I woke up in the intensive care unit after overdosing, intentionally overdosing on my wellbutrins.” “I think these diagnostic labels: the ADHD, the autism, major depressive disorder, or bipolar; I think they're really really asinine labels that really just don't make sense… they're focused more on the label rather than other physiological issues.” “With oxidative stress and inflammation, like those are the two mechanisms that drive any illness.” “Focus on what we have control on as opposed to focusing on what we do not have control of.” “88% of Americans are considered metabolically ill and 70% are overweight or obese, and 43% are diabetic and 30% have a fatty liver.” “Suicide is the 10th leading cause of death for Americans, and Alzheimer's is #6.” “You can't get better in the environment that made you sick.” “If you're kid is eating fake food, they're sedentary, you have to get them active., y You have to feed them high quality real food.” “50% of the kids I work with, we change the diet, we don't need to spend the money on lab testing… the fundamentals are the way to go for sure.”

On this week's show, I have the wonderful Brendan Vermeire, aka the Holistic Savage, on the show to talk about his passion for mental health. We are talking about neuroinflammation specifically and a variety of root causes - including a modern life of less resistance building and then we move through to interventions to support the healing of the body as well as the building of resilience. Clue: Many of them are painfully simple! Brendan is a Mental and Metabolic Health Scientist & Researcher, Functional Medicine Educator, Writer, and Speaker. He is a Board-Certified Holistic Health Practitioner, Master Nutrition Coach, Master Personal Trainer, USAW Sports Performance Coach, and Crossfit Trainer. He began his career as a personal trainer and nutrition coach at the age of 18 after disappointingly being medically discharged from the United States Navy Seal training pipeline due to an injury. After being exposed to the power of functional lab testing in the start of his career, he began intensely pursuing that as a career path which has led him to be widely regarded as one of the top leading experts in Metabolic Health and Functional Education. He is the proud owner and founder of the Metabolic Solutions Institute for Functional Health and Fitness Practitioners, and the Metabolic Solutions Research & Education Foundation, a not-for-profit foundation dedicated to ‘changing the way the world views mental health' through advancing the science of Mental Health Dysfunction. He is also the creator of The Mental M.A.P.TM, a cutting-edge Lab Panel for Mental Health. When he's not educating doctors/practitioners/professionals, helping clients overcome their most severe health struggles, or producing cutting edge scientific education, Brendan enjoys all things fitness and is probably working out. He also enjoys anything in nature and any activities that expand his heart, mind, and soul. Ripping Off the Bandaid To Achieve Holistic Health Today's Mold Talks guest is Brendan Vermeire, a mental and metabolic health scientist, researcher, educator, author, and speaker. He is also a board-certified holistic health practitioner, master nutrition coach, master personal trainer, USAW Sports performance coach, and Crossfit trainer. Brendan's journey with mold began years ago after moving into a water-damaged house and later being introduced to the concept of mold illness. For years, Brendan dealt with the back and forth in the medical world while trying to find a healing solution for his fiance at the time. While he's still unsure as to whether or not mold caused her debilitating chronic illness, the experience was his first brush with functional medicine, environmental factors, and finding the root cause of illness. Since that initial realization, he dove into functional medicine, particularly focusing on how impactful environmental factors like mold can be on mental health. His passion in the field led to a career helping chronically ill individuals, the creation of a wide range of informative materials, a nonprofit dedicated to research and education, and a plethora of case studies aimed at pushing the envelope forward for healthier living for all, among other inspirational feats. Today's Talk:In this episode of Mold Talks, Michael Rubino chats with Brendan Vermeire about his journey into the realm of mold, what led him to become a renowned professional in the functional medicine world, and an advocate for healthier living for all. Throughout his journey, Brenden has continued to push for greater understanding, awareness, and change of how environmental factors like mold impact health in relation to overall wellbeing due to lifestyle. Brenden believes that his first brush with mold began after moving into a water-damaged house with his fiance at the time. Over time, his fiance continued to feel chronically ill and developed what he believed was a classic case of CIRS. Still, while they went to a variety of doctors and specialists, no one could pinpoint what was causing her to feel unwell, even though she continued to suggest that mold was the root cause. Sadly, she would eventually lose her battle with life in 2020, and they would never get to the bottom of whether or not she was struggling with mold toxicity. As Brenden said, "Trying to save her is what got me into functional medicine," and years later, he would be re-introduced to the idea of mold illness. From that moment on, he hit the ground running and dove into researching and figuring out how to help individuals get their bodies back into balance, especially if they've been suffering from mold exposure. The biggest piece of the puzzle, he found, is to help clients focus on getting their mental health in a positive place and actively work on improving their metabolic health. https://www.themoldmedic.com/https://www.allamericanrestoration.com/You can learn more about Brendan Vermeire at: @the_holistic_savagehttps://www.metabolicsolutionsllc.com/

Our patients and clients' spirituality is an often overlooked part of their health. It's overlooked by them. It's overlooked by us. Don't be afraid to address the topic with your patients and clients. You might be surprised how it opens up additional paths to healing.
Brendan has the gift of being able to explain complex concepts in ways that are easy for ANYONE to understand. This episode breaks down how the environment impacts our gut microbiome, and how that can result in neuroinflammation. And the effect that mold and mycotoxins has on that entire path. It's a joy to introduce to you Brendan Vermeire, or @The_Holistic_Savage to the KYPO Podcast today!Brian is a Functional Medicine Educator and CEO of Metabolic Solutions Institute where he teaches that the best medicine is teaching people how not to need it.We dive into some biology, some issues with Big Pharma, some existential crises, and a bit of what you can do in your own life to live a little more like we were BUILT TO LIVE.Brian is one of those intellectuals who calls humans microbes, but somehow he does it in a way that is approachable and digestible. “We are so in our minds, we have lost our senses”Humans are pretty far from the way we were intended to live. Technology, our pace of life, our diets, and our quick fix solutions have broken down some of the integral portions of what it means to live fully. On this show, we talk about how far we have come and what it would look like to live more symbiotically with our environment!METABOLIC HEALTH -what keeps us from true metabolic health?-what role does medicine have in our metabolic health?-what role does TECHNOLOGY and SELFISHNESS have in our metabolic health?EGO & SELF DEVELOPMENT 22:20Our ego keeps us self interested, keeps us safe in an energy scarce environment, but in our culture of abundance keeps us from growing. The self love culture keeps us self obsessed.Self love vs self respect.Humans need a self of purpose to be healthyWe can't show love or empathy if there is none to be found in our own thoughtsBrian answers what REALISTICALLY he has built in his own environment to make sure that allows him to nourish his mind, body, and soul. (And Brian's realistic may not be yours!) So we go into what building yours would look like, too!You are going to love this podcast and more importantly, you are going to LEARN SOMETHING!Let us know when you do!You can find Brian on instagram @the_holistic_savage or his business at https://www.metabolicsolutionsllc.com/You can find me on instagram @keepyourplantson or my program, recipes, and blogs at www.howtokeepyourplantson.com

In a world that is plagued by chronic disease, we've realized that we can't medicate or cut our way out of a lifestyle and environmentally induced epidemic. Note that I said lifestyle induced. It is my opinion that much of what plagues us we have created within ourselves, be it physical, mental, and/or emotional, and certainly not intentionally, but as a product of the poisonous environment we live in, the food we consume, and people we surround ourselves with. In order to heal, we need to change all of those environmental factors, yet sometimes getting a better idea of exactly what plagues us, physiologically, can be a motivating driver to know what and how to move forward. Enter “functional diagnostic nutrition” - an alternative way of objectively assessing health, or dis-ease and a methodology to treat the root cause of illness using various components of diagnostic testing, lifestyle modification, nutritional intervention, supplementation, and stress management. Today I interview Brendan Vermeire, a Functional Medicine Consultant and Holistic Health Practitioner specializing in complex chronic illness. After being exposed to the power of functional lab testing in the start of his career, he began intensely pursuing that as a career path which has lead him to being the current Director of the Association of Functional Diagnostic Nutrition Practitioners, the owner/founder of the Premier Virtual Integrative Health Clinic, Metabolic Solutions, and a Clinical Educator for Bio-Botanical Research. In today's episode, we talk about some of the nuances of functional diagnostic nutrition, when, if, and how it can be responsibly used and what other factors are necessary to help promote healing and long-term health, including physical activity, social and emotional support, and healthier eating habits.
