Full (detailed) Episode Show Notes Available Here:https://healthmysteriessolved.com/160-how-to-support-the-nervous-system-for-hashimotos-and-hypothyroidism/The Case: Terri Ann was diagnosed with Hashimoto's and has struggled with symptoms for years. She's experienced weight gain, exhaustion, food sensitivities, anxiety, depression, hair loss, sleep issues, and brain fog. She's seen countless practitioners and has tried everything with no consistent results. She's become reliant on supplements, even though they are not working.First Steps in Healing Hashimoto's Chronic SymptomsI have seen Terri Ann's Hashimoto's symptoms before and I knew something was lying under the surface. My first step was to get her access to the Primal Trust Program since they specialize in tough chronic cases like this. Also if you don't know your thyroid type of your immune triggers, please join me at my next Free Hashimoto's Training HereThe Investigation with Dr. Cathleen KingWho better to discuss Terri Ann's case than the creator of the Primal Trust Program, Dr. Cathleen King? She's a renowned physical therapist and neuroscience-based mind-body practitioner. As the CEO and founder of the Primal Trust Academy & Community, Dr. King specializes in addressing chronic illnesses, including autoimmunity, Lyme disease, chronic fatigue, long-haul COVID, mold issues, and Mass Cell Activation Syndrome (MCAS). Her unique approach combines brain retraining, vagus nerve toning somatics, and trauma-informed practices to unlock self-healing so I knew she'd be so helpful with this case. The Multifaceted Approach to Supporting Hashimoto's and HypothyroidismIf you've listened to this show for a while then you know I am a staunch believer in having a multifaceted approach to supporting anyone with Hashimoto's and hypothyroidism. Dr. King is also a big supporter of this approach so we kick off our conversation by exploring how interconnected systems are affected, because having one autoimmune disease often links to others. Triggers for these conditions vary, from infections to toxins and mold, which is exactly why we need a comprehensive, whole-body perspective. Our conversation starts with looking at the foundational role of the nervous system, something often overlooked in conventional approaches.Your Nervous System's Crucial Role in Managing Hypothyroidism and Hashimoto'sThere is no minimizing the foundational importance of the nervous system in addressing autoimmune and thyroid conditions. As the master regulator, the autonomic nervous system influences organ functions, endocrine processes, and digestion. Stress responses mark the beginning of these health challenges, prompting compensatory measures by the body. Dr. King focuses on the intricate control panel aspect of the nervous system, highlighting the potential for positively influencing the autonomic nervous system. In other words, we can make a difference in managing our thyroid issues by managing our nervous system. The Overlooked Nervous SystemDespite being the master switch that runs the show, the nervous system often takes a back seat in health discussions. Dr. King explains that this is because we have all normalized stress in our lives, a factor often overlooked in conventional medical approaches. Instead of stress analysis and tailored exercises for the nervous system, the focus is usually on blood tests and markers. And Dr. King would know because, as she shares in this episode, her decade-long journey included a battery of tests, supplements, and protocols, missing the crucial piece of the puzzle: the state of her autonomic nervous system. This gap in the medical approach is the fire that fuels her mission – redefining how we handle chronic illnesses by making nervous system regulation a central part of the strategy.Understanding the Polyvagal Response to Busy LivesSo many of us are juggling busy lives. Dr. Cathleen King outlines a practical approach to nervous system support for anyone who has a million things on the go. She suggests the polyvagal theory (coined by Stephen Porges), where you map your nervous system states throughout the day, identifying moments of fight or flight, immobilization, or a safe mode. Here are the three states and how to determine which you're in:Ventral Vagal State: Safe Connection and CalmnessIn this first state, the ventral vagal state, there's a sense of safety, open connection, and calmness.Sympathetic State: Stress and MotivationThe second state, the sympathetic state, encapsulates the fight/flight response to stress. Chronic activation can lead to stress-related challenges.Dorsal Vagal State: Shutdown and RestingThe third state, the dorsal vagal state, is characterized by shutdown, collapse, and immobility. Recognizing stress responses normalized in this state becomes crucial for self-awareness.Mapping when you are in each of these states throughout the day is the key because this awareness allows for subtle course corrections within the demands of a busy life. Consciously taking a breath or responding differently becomes a realistic starting point for those managing multiple responsibilities.Your Nervous System ToolkitDr. King provides some great tools for connecting to your nervous system so you can better control it. Feeling into your body might sound like a new concept for many accustomed to being trapped in their heads. It's about tuning into the sensations in your body, a shift for those not used to being present in their bodies. Nervous system tools come in handy, offering diverse approaches from vagus nerve toning to brain retraining and somatics. The diversity of the toolkit she shares recognizes that there's no one-size-fits-all solution, catering to different time constraints and preferences.Connecting Thyroid Issues with Vagus Nerve ToningDr. King shares the benefits of vagus nerve toning exercises, especially for anyone dealing with thyroid issues or Hashimoto's. The vagus nerve acts as the conductor orchestrating the harmony of bodily functions, serving as the on-off switch of illness. Various exercises, including breathing techniques and Voo-Woo breaths, aim to bring this powerhouse nerve into optimal shape. These exercises involve using your voice to stimulate the vagus nerve, promoting a sense of safety and toning the fifth chakra, where the thyroid resides. The focus on stimulating the vagus nerve is akin to working out a muscle at the gym, enhancing organ function, and improving communication between the brain and body. The Throat Chakra and Voice Connection to Thyroid HealthThe throat chakra and our ability to express ourselves connect with the broader nervous system. Engaging in nervous system work provides the capacity to feel safe expressing our truth. Dr. Cathleen King emphasizes the importance of working on trauma patterns by developing more states of safety. Speaking your truth requires feeling safe in your body, a journey that may take time but is considered crucial for thyroid health and overall nervous system well-being.Vagus Nerve and Digestive Issues in HypothyroidismThe V...

The Investigation Most Hashimoto's diagnoses come with many mixed emotions. On one hand, there is finally an explanation for all of your many symptoms, but on the other hand, the diagnosis brings on a slew of emotions like frustration, feeling lost, and uncertainty. And, for some, it can bring a devastating sense that life will never be the same again. I get so many questions from my community like, can I still get pregnant with Hashimoto's? Can I have balanced hormones with Hashimoto's? Can I ever get my energy back? Can my hair ever grow and be thick again? Can my digestive issues resolve? Can I ever get rid of my brain fog? And the list goes on and on and on. I am here to tell you that as mysterious as many of the symptoms may seem, having Hashimoto's doesn't have to be a barrier to you living a good, healthy life. My Personal Experience with Hashimoto's I was first diagnosed at 25. Everything was so overwhelming and I worried that my health would be compromised for the rest of my life. I was so wrong. I was able to have children (I have 2). I have more than enough energy to take care of my young kids, run a full-time practice, and run an online business educating and supporting hundreds of students through their own Hashimoto's journey. I've also been able to defy the norms of Hashimoto's by having strong healthy hair and clear skin. I feel healthier now than I did when I was first diagnosed. My fears were unfounded and I want you to know that everything is possible. I was inspired by my friend, Hal Elrod who wrote The Miracle Equation because I believe that the first step in overcoming issues related to Hashimoto's starts with his approach: Believe that you can. It's that faith, that knowing (even if you fake it before you make it) that you can and you will get through this. Take action. Continuously put in the effort to make your desired health a reality. You need both of these for the equation to work. If one side goes, everything comes tumbling down. You need to take action and believe that you can be healthy and feel good again. If you need support on either part of this equation, you've got me in your corner. Through this podcast and, more specifically, through my Thyroid Mystery Solved free training and complete program, I'm here to help you get clear on the actions you need to take. I'm also there to help you keep the faith! The Two-Fold Approach to Healing Hashimoto's When it comes to what actions you need to take, the picture can be a bit confusing. There is so much conflicting information out there and so many people who feel that this or that tactic didn't work. I know exactly why these don't work. It's because you have to use a two-fold approach. You cannot deal with your Hashimoto's symptoms in a vacuum. You have to also support your immune system. This is the most important thing to remember when you are working at improving your health with Hashimoto's. It does not matter what you do for your Hashimoto's if your immune system is not supported, it will continue to attack your thyroid. And, you can't just support your immune system without addressing your Hashimoto's symptoms if you want to see improvements in your health. The two-fold approach is the only thing I have seen work in my long experience helping clients with Hashimoto's. Why The Slow Road is Better for Hashimoto's In this episode, I share the stories of two friends. These stories perfectly illustrate why, despite it being the harder path, we do sometimes have to take the slow road to recovering our health. Quick fixes seldom stick. I know this is hard to hear when you're suffering with Hashimoto's but the process of working your way through your issues and drilling down until you find the root of the problem is going to mean that you land on a solution that is sustainable. Plus, you will appreciate your hard-won health and so, will respect it and continue to stay committed to maintaining it. Your current health journey is a necessary part of your future good health. Remember to keep that faith that you can get better! How to Get Support on Your Path to Living Healthy with Hashimoto's As I explain in this episode, you need to both take action and you need to be steadfast in your belief that living healthy with Hashimoto's is possible for you. These two things helped me regain my health. That's why, when I decided to create a program to help you overcome Hashimoto's I included elements that address both the mindset and the specific and customized actions you need to take to regain your health. I also created this program because I know how hard you work to try to find all of the answers. I know that you've hit that wall of frustration and thought, why can't there be one place with all of the answers and a clear plan for me to follow. I know because I've sat across from client after client who have said that exact thing. I know because I've been there. In this episode, I give you an overview of the Thyroid Mystery Solved program and invite you to discover for yourself what it feels like to be on your path to living healthy with Hashimoto's instead of being stuck in that limbo of research and half efforts. This program is different from anything you've found online because we start by identifying your thyroid type. This is critical because the actions you need to take are based on your thyroid type. Most other approaches are a one-size-fits-all. Next, we look at the thyroid issue from every angle, taking into consideration all of the different systems involved. This goes beyond that two-fold approach I mentioned earlier - it is far more extensive. Yes, the program does cover diet (it even includes meal plans and recipes), exercise, mindset, and how to support your different systems and organs that is specific to you and your thyroid type. Plus, you will uncover and solve your specific Hashimoto's triggers (this will be different for everyone which is another reason why we don't want a one size fits all approach and why its so important for things to be customized) You will also have access to me. I don't mind sharing that this is one of the ONLY ways that you can get access to me because my practice calendar is full and I am not able to take new clients. You can jump the queue and have access to me directly through this program. I think this is also where so much of the value of the program comes from. Maybe you've already paid for doctor visits that resulted in more frustration. Maybe you've even gone to see an integrative doctor and paid to get one or two answers. Now imagine having access to me for all of your questions. How many hundreds of dollars will you save getting your questions answered through the program instead of having to pay for each one? It's an incredibly extensive program that is totally customized to you and your journey. That's the best part; YOUR path is clearly laid out for you so that all you have to do is take action and believe that you can get better. And I'll be there to keep you on track. No more wasting hours searching for answers. No more half measures that get you a fraction of the result you want. No more feeling hopeless and overwhelmed. It's the program I wish I had 20 years ago. I don't want you to wait that long to live life in good health. Her mission is to educate others on evidence-based nutrition by promoting a healthy, sustainable lifestyle through flexible dieting. Lacey's goal as a dietitian is to provide the tools that people need in order to achieve a healthy, and balanced diet while simultaneously helping them to grow and thrive in all aspects of their lives. Join us as we talk about strange and unexpected triggers for acne. Have you ever experienced an acne flare due to any of the triggers mentioned in today's episode? Tell me about it in the comments! In this episode: Can supplements trigger acne? Why can some nutrients like vitamin B12 and biotin cause an acne flare? Could your sensitivity to the nutrients improve at all as you improve or rebalance gut, hormone, or liver health? Why can topicals trigger acne? Possible causes of cystic acne What is DHT? Quotes “When we're looking at acne, for the most part, we're questioning first and foremost, what do my hormones look like? What does my gut look like? What does my liver look like? But other than that, if you have random acne out of the blue, it could be really maybe a food, but also maybe a supplement you started.” [1:32] “When we over exfoliate our skin, we over dry our skin. We irritate it and we damage our skin lining or skin barrier. And then what happens is we have irritated, flaky, red, itchy skin that then tries to heal itself and it can erupt in acne.” [11:20] Links Find Lacey online FREE 3-day meal plan Lacey's No BS Guide to Healing Hashimoto's and Hypothyroidism Healthy Skin Show ep. 120 Estrogen Dominance Effect On Skin Problems w/ Lacey Dunn Healthy Skin Show ep. 075: Why Biotin Can Mess Up Your Labs (Big Time) Jen's appearance on UpliftFit Nutrition Radio Ep. 102- The Skin and Diet Connection- The Root Cause of Skin Conditions The Women's Guide to Hormonal Harmony: How to rebalance your hormones, master your metabolism, and become the boss of your own body Follow Lacey on Instagram | Instagram

Phoebe Lapine is a gluten-free chef and author whose latest book is ‘SIBO Made Simple’ provides great content and information about SIBO, the root causes and how it can be treated along with healing recipes and practical strategies to rebalance the gut. She also shares concise information about how the gut’s protective mechanisms work and the issues that can lead to SIBO. With gut health being incredibly important for many functions in the body achieving the right balance is key and Phoebe, as a SIBO sufferer, knows exactly what it’s like and provides great practical advice on how to heal. This is an episode that will tell you everything you need to know about SIBO from what it is and isn’t to how to treat it effectively. KEY TAKEAWAYS If there is a breach of the small intestinal wall by bacteria they are then in direct contact with your immune system. Damage to the intestinal wall can lead to a leaky gut issue which can create a feedback loop with autoimmunity and this can cause systematic inflammation. The gases bacteria release are inflammatory and damaging SIBO is complex and usually a result of more than one of the body’s protective mechanisms having issues. Any deficiency in the natural microbial substances that we make or deficiency in the immune system can result in SIBO. The migrating motor complex carries food through the intestine and damage to this can be a cause of SIBO. A gut not functioning well will mean issues in the conversion of T4 to T3. T3 is essential for many functions in the body including the production of stomach acid and fuelling the migrating motor complex. if you have a hormone imbalance such as oestrogen dominance the conversion will be even more challenging for T4 to T3. Bacteria carry their own histamine load and it’s all about keeping everything in balance. 50% of people with SIBO will also have some sort of fungal overgrowth as the lack of balance will cause overgrowth not only in the gut but also in other areas of the body There are 3 main treatments for SIBO antibiotics, herbal antimicrobials and an elemental diet. Hashimoto’s Disease is one of the most common causes of long-term thyroid conditions, but it’s also one of the least diagnosed. I’m joined by Dr. Anshul Gupta to talk about his special interest in Hashimoto’s and what we can do to further our diagnosis. The Best Supplements for Hashimoto’s Disease NAD L-Carnitine Co-Q10 (Dr. Gupta recommends MitoQ) Magnesium About Dr. Anshul Gupta Dr. Anshul Gupta is a Board-Certified Family Medicine Physician, with advanced certification in Functional Medicine, Peptide therapy, and also Fellowship trained in Integrative Medicine. He worked at the prestigious Cleveland Clinic Department of Functional Medicine as a staff physician alongside Dr. Mark Hyman. He now specializes in treating Hashimoto’s disease and help people reverse their unresolved symptoms of thyroid dysfunction. Conventional medicine doesn’t have all the answers for a vast majority of patients suffering from Hashimoto’s diseases and that’s where a Functional Medicine model can be helpful. Dr. Gupta makes personalized Functional Medicine plans for people with Hashimoto’s to end fatigue, reduce brain fog, and lose weight sustainably. Through his 3-step process, he not only heals the thyroid but also rejuvenates mitochondria to help women with Hashimoto’s to live their life to the fullest. How to Finally get a Hashimoto’s Diagnosis Hashimoto’s disease is an autoimmune disease that causes your body and immune system to attack your thyroid. If untreated, it can lead to more serious and long-term thyroid conditions. Dr. Anshul Gupta talks about how this disease manifests in your body and what it means for your long-term health. While an unfortunately common disease, Hashimoto’s is chronically underdiagnosed because the markers aren’t often tested for. Because it’s often missed, more serious cases of thyroid disease show up that are often too advanced to fully cure. If you think you might have Hashimoto’s disease, ask your doctor to run these labs for you: Thyroid Hormones, Antibodies, and Inflammation Markers. Dr. Gupta talks about T3 and reverse T3 hormones and why your physician should be aware of the impact of these on Hashimoto’s disease. Healing Hashimoto’s Disease Naturally Dr. Gupta talks about what some of the contributing factors of Hashimoto’s are. Some of these you can reduce yourself, such as reducing your consumption of gluten and dairy, others might take a medical intervention. Dr. Gupta explains the relationship between your body’s mitochondria and Hashimoto’s disease. He gives some accessible ways to improve your mitochondrial connection. Finally, Dr. Gupta talks about the link between adrenal fatigue and thyroid health. One of the most important things you can do to improve your adrenals is to practice stress reduction techniques. Downtime is absolutely vital and we both urge you to train yourself to relax for your health. When’s the last time you did nothing? I challenge you to take five minutes every day for the next week to literally do nothing, then report back. Let me know how that was for you in the comments on the episode page. Quotes “If T3 is your gas pedal, reverse T3 is your brake pedal. A lot of times, people come to me saying their thyroid numbers look good, their T3 and T4 is good, why are they having problems? So I check their reverse T3, which is super high. So even though you have a good amount of T3, the functioning of T3 is hampered because the reverse T3 is too high.” [12:45 “I always tell my patients to use some destressing techniques. It can be meditations, deep breathing, cultivating a hobby, or just five minutes every day of not doing anything.” [35:46] “Magnesium is the key. Magnesium doesn’t get the limelight that it should. It’s involved in more than 300 biometric processes in our body. It’s one of the most important minerals that our body needs to function.” [38:14] In This Episode What Hashimoto’s Disease is and how it affects our body [8:00] What blood tests and markers diagnose Hashimoto’s Disease [10:00] What you need to know about reverse T3 hormones [12:00] What factors contribute to Hashimoto’s Disease [13:30] How to restore the mitochondria connection [17:30] How to improve your adrenal health [31:00] The importance of downtime [35:00] Links & Resources Use code LIVERDETOX 10% off Core Restore Take the Free Thyroid Quiz Find Dr. Anshul Gupta Online Follow Dr. Anshul Gupta on Instagram | Facebook | Twitter | Pinterest | LinkedIn Find Your Longevity Blueprint Online Follow Your Longevity Blueprint on Instagram | Facebook | Twitter | YouTube | LinkedIn Get your copy of the Your Longevity Blueprint book and claim your bonuses here Find Dr. Stephanie Gray and Your Longevity Blueprint online Follow Dr. Stephanie Gray on Facebook | Instagram | Youtube | Twitter | LinkedIn Integrative Health and Hormone Clinic Podcast Production by the team at Counterweight Creative Related Episodes Episode 11: Intermittent Fasting Truths With Cynthia Thurlow Episode 14: Supporting The Mitochondria With Nad And Peptides W/ Dr. Amber Krogsrud Episode 30: Soma Breathing For Longevity With Jen Broyles
Is it possible to heal ANY disease naturally? This incredible doc thinks that just may be possible, and she certainly has the results to back it up. Dr. Courtney Hunt has spent the majority of her career as a board certified OBGYN helping women, mothers, and their children deal with 21st Century illnesses that current medical textbooks fail to address. Most of these illnesses arise from our changing, modern environment. After many years delivering babies, Dr. Hunt grew tired of seeing mother after mother, and woman after woman, come in feeling exhausted, foggy, achy, and sad. Worse yet, she grew concerned about the growing number of sick children these women were bringing in with them; children of all ages. Dr. Hunt herself was a busy delivering obstetrician and operating gynecologist and has spent years translating that expertise into figuring out how to make surgery and pharmaceuticals less necessary and lifestyle more important in the path to wellness. She began to study nutrigenetics many years ago when she started to realize that the majority of her pregnant patients were nutrient depleted and grew concerned over the impact this could have on the fetus. In this episode, Erin talks to Ryan Monahan about the hidden stressors in the body. These are things that are preventing someone from healing. This episode is a special one since my sister Wendy is my guest! She went through the discovery that she had Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis, which is the autoimmune form of having an underactive thyroid condition. Wendy was living her life as a mother, a wife, and a working woman. She thought it was normal not to have the energy that she once had, to have headaches, to feel overwhelmed, to have some digestive issues, and urinary tract infections. But it was not, normal shouldn't feel this way! In this episode, Wendy shares her story, because this is the way we learn, hearing the stories of other women and their struggles, realizing we are not alone. Wendy is currently in remission for Hashimoto’s even when she was told by her doctors and endocrinologist that this was just not possible; she achieved this by prioritizing her body and health. These are the main topics of an amazing conversation: Wendy talks about the symptoms she felt before being diagnosed. The effects of antibiotics on the gut and digestive system. Wendy started taking thyroid medication but her symptoms were still there. Wendy talks about how she contracted repetitive urinary tract infections and how she struggled with the side effects of antibiotics. Not sleeping well is a sign that we shouldn’t miss. Wendy talks about the moment when she realized she needed a holistic approach to her health. Chronic stress causes severe consequences to your body. Wendy was finally diagnosed with Hashimoto’s and felt the relief of knowing what was going on with herself. The biggest changes in Wendy’s lifestyle: Adrenal supplements (vitamin D, Probiotics), a dairy and gluten-free diet, no caffeine, no alcohol. Wendy started a blog where she shares all her recipes as well as tools and hacks to win the battle against Hashimoto’s. How to develop a relationship with your practitioner. Wendy gives her advice to all women feeling as she did. I hope this episode helps you achieve the realization that investing in your health is the best decision you can make, and that healing your body must be your priority, keep seeking for the answers you are looking for! In women, estrogen fluctuates throughout the month. However, in some cases, estrogen becomes unbalanced and there is too much of it in the body. This is known as estrogen dominance. My guest today is Lacey Dunn. Lacey is breaking the mold in the “dietitian world” as a fitness professional, bodybuilder, and registered dietitian. Her mission is to educate others on evidence-based nutrition by promoting a healthy, sustainable lifestyle through flexible dieting. She believes that there is no “one size fits all” approach, and that self efficacy in food choice is a driving force for fostering healthy habits and encouraging behavioral change. Lacey is the owner of a thriving online coaching platform, UpliftFit Nutrition, as well as host and founder of UpliftFit Nutrition radio. Lacey's goal as a dietitian is to provide the tools that people need in order to achieve a healthy, and balanced diet while simultaneously helping them to grow and thrive in all aspects of their lives. Join us as we discuss what estrogen dominance is and how it can affect the skin. Have you ever dealt with estrogen dominance? Let me know in the comments! In this episode: What is estrogen dominance? The importance of not self-diagnosing Why are daily bowel movements so important? Is it possible that gut dysbiosis is hijacking your estrogen clearance? Best testing for sex hormones Why is cholesterol important? Quotes “Estrogen dominance symptoms would be things like fatigue, breast tenderness, irregular menstrual cycle, heavy, heavy periods with cramps, headaches, mood swings, muscle and joint pains, digestive issues.” [3:29] “If you have all these symptoms, don't let any doctor downplay them. In this episode of The Dr. Hedberg Show, I interviewed Andrea Nakayama in a discussion about strategies for healing Hashimoto's disease. We talked about her "3 Tiers to Epigenetic Mastery" and how they relate to Hashimoto's disease and thyroid health. Within the 3 tiers we discussed stress, gut health, infections, micronutrient deficiencies, adverse childhood experiences, SIBO, reproductive hormones, goitrogens, iodine, and all the various diets that people are following these days. Andrea is a clinician but also a Hashimoto's patient so it was a real pleasure to get her insight and expertise on healing Hashimoto's disease. Dr. Hedberg: Well, welcome everyone to "The Dr. Hedberg Show." This is Dr. Hedberg and I'm really looking forward to my conversation today with Andrea Nakayama. And she actually had me on her show, "The 15-minute Matrix," talking about infections and Hashimoto's disease. And she's extremely knowledgeable. She knows a lot about thyroid issues and Hashimoto's, which we're gonna get into today. So Andrea, welcome to the show. Andrea: Thank you so much, Dr. Hedberg. I'm so pleased to be here. Dr. Hedberg: So for the people who don't know that much about you, why don't you just give everyone a little bit about your background and what you're working on these days in functional medicine? Andrea: Yeah, thanks for asking. I'm a functional-medicine nutritionist, and I've created a curriculum for practitioners where I train into the theories of a functional-nutrition approach, both the science and the art of working in what I consider to be the gap in functional-medicine or holistic-medicine approaches. So I have a school called Functional Nutrition Lab. We have about 4,000 graduates in over 65 countries at this point. And we also have a virtual clinic where we work with patients directly and serve, again, the underserved population. I think of the people we serve as the big bigs. They have big health issues and they've already made a big effort, sometimes working with the top doctors around the country. So that's the work that I do that I feel really passionate about. And I myself, I'm a patient. I have Hashimoto's. I have had quite a life journey that led me to uncovering my own autoimmune disease. And I manage it so that I can live the best life possible. Dr. Hedberg: Let's jump into the what you call the three tiers of epigenetic mastery. And so, this is a kind of a system or approach to healing and functional medicine. So can you walk everyone through this approach that you've created? Andrea: Yeah, absolutely. I definitely see, like I said, that there is a gap in functional medicine. And I am completely in service to the functional medicine model. I really believe that we have to see the person as a whole. We have to look at the roots. We have to work in therapeutic partnership. And we have to see through systems, a systems-based approach, both biological systems and understanding the web of interconnections, but also a systematic approach that allows us to work with those who are sick and not getting better. So if we honor the truth of bio individuality and see every single individual as unique in their own way, not just a diagnosis like Hashimoto's or like I experienced with my husband having a brain tumor, you know, he was treated like a brain tumor, if we're to see each individual and each patient as unique, we still need a systematic approach. Otherwise, we're constantly in the dark looking for solutions. And that's why I created the three tiers to epigenetic mastery. I saw it as a way to teach into honoring the individuality of each patient. So the three tiers are, tier one, what I call the non-negotiables. Tier two, deficiency to sufficiency. And tier three, dismantling the dysfunction. And what I see in functional medicine is that we often go to the tier three approach. We often want to skip to the sexy infection or the thing that's happening in the body that may...

As a child raised in rural Minnesota, Dr. Christianson was an avid reader. He loved spending time with his family’s encyclopedias and medical textbooks. His body, however, was a source of struggle. Cerebral palsy left him with seizures, poor coordination, and obesity. A devastating comment made by a classmate in 7th grade gym class spurred him into action. He became determined to reset his health and his life. Over the next few weeks he devoured dozens of books on nutrition, fitness, and health and created his own recovery plan. Dr. Christianson gave up sugar and developed an exercise routine that was easy enough for him to start on. He stuck with it and built on it. With no prior sports experience, he became a varsity football player and his classes’ best endurance runner by 9th grade. This experience taught him that being healthy transformed both how you feel and how others treat you. He also learned that the tickets to health were knowledge and persistence. He frequently appears on national TV shows like Dr. Oz, CNN, The Doctors and The Today Show as well as print media like Women’s World, USA Today, Newsweek, and Shape Magazine. When he’s not maintaining a busy practice, his favorite hobbies include mountain unicycling, technical rock climbing, and watching the stars. Healing Hashimoto's and Taking Responsibility for Your Health One of my favorite things about the work I have done all of these years with Tasty Yummies are all the amazing connections I have made, not just in the community we have all created together, but among my peers and other content creators, writers and bloggers. I have met an incredible amount of people who continuously inspire me, who challenge me to not only investigate and examine the work that I am doing, but also in my own life and health. One of my favorite things about this podcast is the opportunity to bring all of these incredible people to you, too! To share their personal stories and to hopefully inspire you in all the ways they continue to inspire me! Today's guest Carly Johnson Brawner, has become a good friend of mine through the virtual space. Dealing with this health condition is a challenge in itself. Having to worry about how to survive in society such as the workplace is an even more significant obstacle to hurdle. My guest, Holly Bertone is no stranger to this situation. In fact, it empowered her to use her experience to help other people cope with autoimmune diseases. Transitioning Stage Holly Bertone has always been active during her teenage years and in her 20s. However, like many young people, she was a junkaholic who enjoyed sweets too much. Resolving to have a better lifestyle, Holly Bertone transitioned in her 30s and got into fitness. She was active in mountain bike races, swimming and running. Consequently, Holly Bertone’s diet improved. She still enjoyed sweets but consumed it in moderation. Diagnosed With Breast Cancer Thinking that her healthier lifestyle drove her further away from illnesses and diseases, Holly Bertone couldn’t be more wrong. On her 39th birthday, she got a gift she didn’t expect — breast cancer. Before the doctor breaking the news to her, Holly Bertone recalled that she initially felt a lump as she rolled in bed one morning. It took two months of tests before Holly Bertone’s doctor dropped the bomb. Life In Remission It’s hard when you find out you have cancer, but as the saying goes, ‘Life goes on.’ And that’s precisely what Holly Bertone did. Ten days after her cancer treatment ended, she got married. However, the ordeal wasn’t over. Even after cancer treatment, Holly Bertone wasn’t getting better. Some of Holly Bertone’s friends survived breast cancer and were running marathons, while Holly Bertone could barely get out of bed. “I picked an aggressive treatment. But in hindsight, I wish I looked for other treatments first, especially nutrition.” Diagnosed With Hashimoto’s Six years ago, Holly Bertone complained that she was still feeling sick all the time. Doctors initially did not take Holly Bertone seriously because this was a year after her successful cancer treatment ended. Hence, the testing dragged on and on until doctors found out Holly Bertone has Hashimoto’s disease. Hashimoto’s disease is an autoimmune thyroid condition. According to the Mayo Clinic, Hashimoto’s disease primarily affects middle-aged women. However, it can also occur in men and women of any age, and in children as well. Furthermore, it is the most common cause of hypothyroidism in the United States. Coping with Hashimoto’s Autoimmune diseases can’t be cured immediately, and it indeed can’t be cured overnight by taking a lot of drugs. Holly Bertone’s case was no exception. Everyday was a constant struggle. “I was still going to allopathic doctors at that time who told me I have a hypothyroid disease. Hence, I took a lot of medicines,” recalls Holly Bertone. “My health got worse. I had migraines, brain fog, cognition issues, joint pains and chronic fatigues for five years.” The Myers Way Discovering The Autoimmune Solution book by Dr. Amy Myers was Holly Bertone’s saving grace. The book expounds on the causes of autoimmune diseases and how to reverse it naturally through diet and lifestyle changes. A New York Times bestseller, Dr. Myers has helped thousands of people suffering from autoimmune diseases. The book provides a step-by-step process towards helping your body improve in a month. “I followed her ‘Myers Way’ autoimmune protocol. I cut gluten entirely, as well as processed foods and sugar. A week later, I got rid of dairy,” said Holly Bertone. “The more foods I started to eliminate and the cleaner I ate, my health improved.” Natural Living Holly Bertone’s battle with Hashimoto’s wasn’t limited to food. Bent on making her living environment as healthy as possible, she eventually got rid of all cleaning products that had harmful ingredients. Eventually developing her line of natural organic products for the home, Holly Bertone proudly only uses the best natural ingredients for her products. Her line has also expanded to making all-natural beauty products as well. “I first got rid of harmful cleaning products. Then I learned how to make my own non-toxic cleaning products and natural beauty products,” Holly Bertone said. “It was a month before I noticed significant changes.” My Mommy Has Cancer Book If cancer is hard for the person it was diagnosed with, it is hard for family members, too. Children are affected the most. Hence, this book was written to help both the parents and children process their feelings about the dreaded Big C. The book encourages parent and child to open the lines of communication about everything concerning cancer like chemotherapy, hair loss, surgery and much more. Each little topic has a break-out box that parents go over with their child to help them open up about how they feel. “My book is for elementary kids. My stepson helped me write it. He was seven years old when I was diagnosed with cancer,” said Holly Bertone. “He and another son of a survivor helped do the illustrations. It goes through the changes that a child sees when his parent has cancer.” Thriving In The Workplace If things in the homefront are challenging enough, Holly Bertone hurdled another situation at her workplace. Nowadays, it is hard to find companies who genuinely empathize with employees suffering from autoimmune diseases and other illnesses. You see, Holly Bertone worked for a federal government agency. For the past two years, Holly Bertone’s management has been very understanding, knowing she has Hashimoto’s disease and chronic fatigue. However, when the management changed, the new team was not accommodating at all. Consequently, Holly Bertone had to get a lot of paperwork to justify her disability. “Some laws covered my condition, but there was a lot of retributions against me. The new management was not happy that I was asking for minor accommodations regarding my health,” said Holly Bertone. One night, Holly Bertone was so sick, that she barely held it together. Her health was failing, and Holly Bertone’s doctor wanted her to get treatment. “I went to the doctor once, and the manager was not happy that I went to the appointment even if I had 480 hours of approved leaves legally covered. The top management rescinded it,” Holly Bertone recalls. After four to five months of declining health and stress, Holly Bertone made the difficult decision of resigning from her job that paid a hefty salary. However, treating her experience as a blessing in disguise, Holly Bertone decided to write a book to educate individuals with autoimmune diseases on their legal and disability rights in the workplace. “The Job Accommodation Network is a non-profit organization under the Department of Labor,” said Holly Bertone. “They can’t endorse my book, but they helped me gather info for accuracy. Their website also has a lot of good resources for people with disabilities.” Pink Fortitude Website Holly Bertone believes that the essence of everything that she writes about is taking whatever life hands her and making the world a better place because of it. Her yearning to help people is why she also put up her website called Pink Fortitude. Pink Fortitude aims to help people suffering from cancer and autoimmune diseases. The website promotes a healthy and natural lifestyle through food, cleaning products and much more. “I have faced death so many times. I don’t know when my last day is going to be. So I encourage people to strive to live life everyday with fortitude, regardless of what life hands you,” said Holly Bertone. Holly Bertone, CNHP, PMP, is a health entrepreneur, author, and advocate. She is the President and CEO of Pink Fortitude, LLC and runs the healthy living website pinkfortitude.com.
