Dr. Zak shares his findings on how immersion can be used to create better ads, improve training and education, and even enhance personal well-being. Dr. Paul J. Zak is a Professor of economics, psychology and management at Claremont Graduate University. His newest book is Immersion: The Science of the Extraordinary and Source of Happiness. Highlights of Conversation Immersion, not “liking,” is the key to effective communication: Dr. Zak explains that people may consciously claim to like something, but their brain's unconscious response reveals a different story. Immersive Experiences are Social : Dr Zak explains that extraordinary experiences arise from understanding social value. Positive social interactions create loyalty and enhance overall experience. Immersive ads lead to sales bumps: Dr. Zak shares examples of ads that were initially disliked but ultimately drove sales due to their high immersion levels. He says ""High immersion ads that are not very likable can still be compelling to your brain." Immersive 'Flavoured Diet Coke' ads in 2018 , were not well liked but led to a significant sales bump. Place ads during Peak Immersion Moments: Successful advertising should place branding and calls to action during peak emotional moments within the narrative, rather than at the end when immersion is typically lower. The future of advertising is immersive: Dr. Zak suggests that advertisers should focus on creating shorter, impactful ads that evoke strong emotions and leave a lasting impression on viewers. He says "Immersive ads create memorable experiences that drive behaviour." He advises advertisers to learn from movie trailers which often tell half a story, leaving the resolution to drive ticket sales. The Tuesday app promotes emotional fitness: Dr. Zak's team has developed an app that provides daily goals for social interaction and tracks emotional well-being. Hello and Welcome to iGen. This is a podcast that shines a light on a unique and inspirational education program that takes place at Sherbrooke Community Centre in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada. My name is Eric Anderson and I am the Communications Leader for Sherbrooke Community Centre. We are a long-term care home in Saskatoon that is home to 263 residents of all ages and abilities, and since 2014, has been the home of the iGen program.iGen, which is short for intergenerational classroom, is a wonderful partnership between the Saskatoon Public School Division and Sherbrooke that sees 25 grade six students from across Saskatoon working with and learning from the Elders who call Sherbrooke home. The students spend their school days at Sherbrooke, within our care home, which makes for an incredible learning environment for everyone involved.This is episode five of the podcast and we take listeners to Pike Lake Provincial Park which is 30 minutes southwest of Saskatoon. Lead Teacher, Keri Albert, and secondary teacher, Lorna Conquergood, take the iGen class to Pike Lake Provincial Park every June to celebrate and reflect on the school year and to do some wonderful activities with Sherbrooke residents. It has been a weird week.Last Thursday, I received an email in my YXE Underground inbox from a gentleman named Mohammad Hussain. He said he was the Lead Press Secretary for the Prime Minister of Canada and wondered if I would be interested in having Prime Minister Trudeau on my podcast to talk about the importance of community leaders and why celebrating their work is important in building community. He also said this was not a scam email and that I should call him back.I thought it was a scam email so I deleted it and continued on with my day at Sherbrooke Community Centre where I work as Communications Leader. About an hour later, I received an email from my friend and former CBC colleague, David Shield, saying some guy from the Prime Minister's Office was trying to track me down. So I thought maybe I should call this Mohammad guy back. He didn't answer so I really thought it was a scam.Then he called me back and explained that the Prime Minister would be in Saskatoon on Tuesday, April 23rd, and would I be interested in having him on YXE Underground as a guest. Mohammad said he likes to do different types of media when the Prime Minister visits smaller cities. He came across my podcast and thought it was really good and wondered if I would be interested in having a conversation with the Prime Minister through the lens of YXE Underground.I asked if I could sleep on it and he said yes. I spoke with a couple of close friends to get their thoughts on what I should do. I was very sensitive to the fact that the Prime Minister does not fit the mandate of the podcast (he lives in Ottawa and is slightly above ground) and that he is not overly popular in our city and province. I also didn't want him to just come on the podcast and read talking points about the federal budget or all the things the government is doing.After speaking with these two friends, I was leaning no and called my dad to basically confirm what I was thinking. My dad is definitely right of centre on the political spectrum, but much to my surprise, he said I would be a fool not to do this and that I should get out of my comfort zone and interview the Prime Minister because when in your life would you ever get this opportunity again to speak with the Canadian Prime Minister one on one? I emailed Mohammad the next day and said I would do it under one condition: I wanted this to be a conversation about community and the importance of community leaders, and that if the interview didn't meet the standards I set for myself for the podcast or became an avenue for the Prime Minister to become overly political, I would not publish the episode. He agreed and then I started worrying about what questions I should ask the Prime Minister in the 25 minutes I was given with him.I am very aware of how polarizing Prime Minister Trudeau is in our city, province and country. I certainly do not agree with everything his government has done and continues to do, but I honestly thought that my podcast listeners would be curious to hear what our Prime Minister thinks of our Saskatoon community and the leaders who are making a difference.I think we had a good conversation about the importance of community leaders in Saskatoon and why having community organizations work together on issues is so important. I am very proud of the fact that YXE Underground caught the attention of the Prime Minister's office and am grateful to everyone who has supported the podcast and continues to support it along with the people and organizations featured on it. The interview took place at Wanuskewin Heritage Park this past Tuesday, April 23rd, in one of their beautiful gallery spaces. Two chairs and a small table were set up for us and we spoke for just over 20 minutes. Music plays so many roles in our lives. It brings us together through live concerts…It can help us change our mood or amplify how we are feeling in a certain moment…And as you will hear in this episode, music has the power to form meaningful relationships and spark joy in people with physical and cognitive challenges. Candace Ukrainetz shares her passion for forming those relationships in this episode of YXE Underground. She is the music therapist at Sherbrooke Community Centre, a long term care home in Saskatoon. Full disclosure...I work at Sherbrooke as its Communications Leader and I have had the privilege of watching Candace for the past eight years create well-being in the lives of residents in her role. Candace grew up playing all sorts of instruments. She took piano and cello lessons as a kid and today can often be seen sitting next to a resident with her guitar or auto-harp in her hands. What Candace really loves to do, however, is sing. She would sing as a kid all through her house and says that singing gets out all of her emotions. Her love of music led down the path of music therapy and the 263 residents at Sherbrooke are the beneficiaries of her gifts.One of the many things I love about this episode is that not only are we shining a light on Candace's work at Sherbrooke but also the role music therapists can play in other settings such as hospitals.It turns out March is Music Therapy month.I wish I could say I planned it this way to share Candace's story this month, but I am not that organized. However, I am hopeful this episode will spark a conversation in our Saskatoon community about the benefits music therapy has on people. I met with Candace in Sherbrooke's greenhouse a few days after Valentine's Day. She brought a cart full of musical instruments with her and you'll hear a few during our conversation. About Sarah - I grew up knowing Jesus, my whole life and I am thankful to my parents for that precious gift. My personal relationship and walk with Jesus started in high school and college. At that time I wanted to serve Him with my whole life. Only way I knew how to do that was to 1) marry a pastor and 2) become a school teacher in our tribe.
